Title: Don't Mess With Texas. (Still a WIP)
Post by: Rawsushi on May 19, 2006, 08:05:12 pm
Original lineart/concept by Frank Jaeger (http://www.iamnotoriginal.com).

WIP Animation.

WIP state (05/20/06)

Current WIP state (05/28/06)

Still some problem areas. The color of the field is a bit dark. I'll be adjusting that. The blue on the character will probably change. There really isn't any blue in the picture, so the secondary blue lightsource looks out of place.

Those lines are spectacular!

The coloring sort of sucks... :-\

I'm very much a fan of the almost appleIIe attirbute-clash subtle blues and red around the lettering. This is a pretty inventive technique. cool.

I must say sir, I am a Texan, and you captured our likeness pretty well. Bravo to that.

But some parts of the piece seem be left untouched. Be it, they are little parts of the piece, but the right boot seems plain and doesn't hold any of the blue shadows that are shown on the left boot. Also the champagne in the glass seems to be left a little too plain. I could understand this, however, as something that was meant to be left plain, as it would hold true for a cartoon liquid. However, in this case, I don't think it works very well. Maybe a little shine in the liquid could spice it up. Also, the hat seems a little plain at the moment, and it could use some sprucin' up.
***by the way, I just read the rest of the post, and I realized that you wrote that you are still not finished with the piece, which makes everything else I just said redundant....I'm a dumb ass***
Everything else definitely overshadows these tiny problems though. I also love the way the vibrant blues seem to aa very well with the lettering, though I wouldn't go so far as to call it new technique. Bull corn aside, I've been waiting too long to see something like this from you. Great job, and can't wait to see this baby finished. Awsome...

uhhh, yeah, I know. Thats why I put that special sentence in italics, in my previous post, to inform others that I just read the rest of the post...kinda ironic though, that one person would call out another for not readin' the post, when he didn't read the other correctly either...By the way, I'm still waiting on this baby to be finished. I like the fancy design of the boots, but I think a true Texan might have some spurs to go along with that sexy outfit....

Spurs. Not a  bad call.

Just to let you know, I am still working on the piece. The background is looking quite pretty. I'll try to update this soon.

Updated with an incomplete background.

I just wanted to prove that I am, in fact, still working on this.

its looking nice, but the background's lighting doesnt seem to fit in with the lighting on the cowboy dude

Yeah. It's something I plan on fixing. In all honesty, most of the background has been recycled from a piece that I didn't want to see go to waste.

His clothing is going to end up looking like more of a gold color now... which is fine. In fact, I think it makes the picture more foul. Probably something like this:

But, you know, more shiny and gross.

Now I just need to figure out how to make his "being lit from the front" shading seem more natural.

I must say, that I am much more of a fan of the previous update (the one with the Texan flag)
It looked like one of those old cartoon's lobby cards, thing that I find amazing.

On the newest update, the BG and the character are both nice (though the clouds are a bit meh, and the trees look more suitable for a game than for that picture) on their own but not so much together (at least so far, probably because of the outline clash in the yellow parts of the bg which kinda ruins the subtle-ness of the picture right now, and the different lighting)
Somehow I wish this ended up looking like something out of a looney toons cartoon.

So far it is pretty good, looking forwards to more updates.
Keep it up.

Well, as I did this in layers, I could easily just dump the background and try again. It's not really a big deal; I'll just use it for some other project at a later date.

If I can't get the sprite to mesh well, then what's the point, right? I can easily turn this back into another color-conservation piece. I'll play with it for another day or two.

PS: Panda, I do believe you just gave me an idea.

Hmm i must say I think the first background you did suits the picture more better. without it people looking at the picture might just read "Tex's Ass" and not get the Texas reference.

Also the lighting on the figure is suited to more of an indoors setting.
