Title: My sig
Post by: .TakaM on May 16, 2006, 09:09:34 am
everyones sigs here are pretty minimalistic and often just nothing, which is something Ive never really seen at a forum especially one based on an art form.

when I first registered here I had a pretty big sig (i think around 300 pixels high) and I got a pm saying it was too big, so I removed it, recently I made the one you see today and I got pmed explaining this one is too big also. well everywhere else Ive used this sig, and my much bigger version fits within restrictions fine.

so yeah, since there are no official rules or guidelines about signature size limits I'd just like to know if everyone is ok with it ;)

edit-
and please feel free to say what size you'd prefer signatures to be, it may help the admins come up with some rules or atleast a few more people have a size in mind when making a sig to use here

edit-
Ive got a new smaller sig now, below is the one this topic was about:

if it were up to me there'd be no sigs at all. What use is forcing people to see the same image after every one of one's posts? An avatar has the use of letting people quickly know who is writing, and that's fine. But why do I have to scroll-through big signatures over that?

well helm, there is an option in your profile not to view other users sigs ;)

But there's that fine line where I am interested in sigs that link to websites and do use them sometimes.

well, fair enough.
I certainly can understand why, but Im not quite sure people here have refrained from having sigs simply because very few people have much of a sig and a lack of related guidelines, or because they feel the same way

i dont see the point in sigs, but just because i ignore something doesnt make it bothersome or offensive.  do what you like

not sure either. Guess the poll might give an estimate? But we I hope can agree that other art fora where people post an one-liner that takes 30 pixels and their sig follows with 3 images ( be them nice images or not) that cover 350 pixels is a big nono. This forum will always (well, as long as I draw breath, and I think pep feels the same way) be content-based, so pretty pictures or no in signatures, aren't the point.

Just to throw in my two cents, I don't mind signature pics as long as they're under about 30-50px tall, any bigger and having to scroll past it all the time starts to get a bit annoying.

Thats one thing I like about this place, you aren't bombarded with tons of huge signatures that take up more space than the actual average posts.
Here we focus more on keeping the content the main focus like Helm said, rather than allowing other things like a signature to become too distracting.
Other places also have such restrictions where they say that you can only have 2 or three lines of text, so I don't think asking to keep signatures small is too much to ask.

Personally, I think your signature is just barely tolerable. Any bigger and it would be a massive nuisance. But really, I see nothing wrong with having signatures in moderation...it's just on those forums where people have entire books in their siggy or a massive banner or links to a thousand websites. As Helm said, I don't mind when they link to portfolios or something or when the image displays their skill level or something, but to have a signature just for the sake of getting noticed...bleh.

I see it as rather tacky to have a large art piece displayed as a signature on an art critique forum; It'd be quite distracting, no?

i personally love sigs, as long as the height isnt big, and even then i just scroll done a tad bit more, no harm done.
(which reminds me, i need to change my sig, it was talking about a loooooooooong time ago when everybody thought i was reduced cging)

I prefer thin and compact sigs to yours, as there's alot of empty space in your current one, although i can't really talk 'cus at the moment mine isn't so small. I prefered the older one with the animated guy, as it wasn't so distracting and it was transparent, rather than a slightly different colour than the forum background, which is weird for me eyes. But yeah, it doesn't bother me to the point of complaining about it, as it isn't bad to look at now and again.

33% of the people find it obnoxious, please remove it. I'm really for a max 64px high limit

OMG CG AA! HUGGLEPIX D: D: D: D:  BAN PLS

I hate signatures bigger than 64px tall, though it looks like you spent some time on that i'd like to see it go personally >_>

<------ plenty of space over thar to be obnoxious and annoying, artistic, sexy, sexually attractive, attractive, worthy of  dating, worthy of ban etc,

Not going to hate you for having that sig, but I find it annoying  having to see it the over and over wherever you post. And as Helm said I like to keep sigs on so at times I can see people's sites etc.
But ah well each to his own I guess.

Ive really been planning on waiting for the poll results and what more of the pixelopolis regulars have to say on the matter, and I really dont need common courtesy pointed out for me.

This forum is about expression-quite often in the pixel medium. if we really wish to change his signature, I see it as a hindrance to takam's expression as a pixel artist.

The signature is what its name illustrates; a signature to whom ever puits it up.

This particular signature was hand made, is unoffensive, barely takes 3 seconds to scroll over, and is pretty well done.

if the image was banned i would agree with you instant, but theres not any rule about it being posted.  i think what most people are annoyed about is that you have to constantly scroll past the same image, which in my book places signatures only a point or two above spamming, but like i said i just ignore them

I think it's a LIIITTTLE too big. By a tiny marigin. I've seen so much worse, and it IS a nice sig. But it's.. just slightly slightly slightly too big. I tend to not like signatures that're larger than the post itself, and... yours is.

ok, the poll has been staying around 50-50 for the last few days, so I made a smaller version roughly the size of larwicks, I was starting to feel pretty uncomfortable when Im the only one with such a big sig anyway :P

Much better. It displays your skills without being an annoyance.

i know i may be alittle late (always seem to be for some reason)
but ill throw my bit in too

personally im not fond of sigs much bigger than the one you changed it too.

like others have said it becomes distracting to what the actual thread is about. since this is an art forum, the main focus of the images should go to what is being posted. not constantly scolling through everyones sigs to try and find the actual image that is relavant.

no need to advertise yourself. the display pic can do that good enough, and for the most part, everyone here knows what each other is capable of. If we are interested we can look into the past things that you have done.

but to sum it up..
i find large sigs draw away from the main focus of threads, expand threads to be hugley long, and do too much advertising of ones self.
show your talent and skills through what you post, not some snazzy sig.

sorry to be repetitive of others
