I did this as my silhouette assignment for the TUGS spriting competition over at tSR. For the details of the assignment, please see here:

this is my first real "scene" like that, so any kind of C+C would help a lot.

Looking good so far, but the chunks of darkness strewn throughout the middle of the scene are rather disrupting. In particular, the two in the middle just seem like they don't belong there. If you could get rid of those, I think that would improve the piece at least significantly.

I agree with pistachio! I think there's enough interest around the border to show that it's like a broken window into another world or whatever c:
