Title: GR#057 - Pirate Game - Scenery, Sprites
Post by: coffee on June 15, 2011, 06:46:58 pm
Yoho!

Been some time since I posted something of my own. Been busy with some small game projects to keep the pixeling up.

Decided to start my own little project. A Simple, clean and fun multiplayer game for at least four people.
You will be able to choose between a selection of different characters with their own abilities. On this picture Captain Ramsey and Bottleneck Bob. Captains abilities are guns and weapons. Bobs are just to smash things with his fist.
So, each character will be needed somehow at some point and you will be able to combine their strengh at certain fights. It will be powered by a 3D engine. So the bridge on the picture will get a smooth animation with some gravitystuff ect. ect!
It will hopefully be running on a nintendo DS at some point.

(Background is far from done, still some empty space and things to do.)

Latest:

Just want some hints and tips from what you can see atm. Something worth changing or do in another way perhaps, before I continue.
Worth to add that I work a fulltime job, so it will take some time before it's completely done and playable :( Also trying to keep the colours minimal, so there will be no big time AAing  ;)

/C

This isn't very related, but those rectangles used for shading could make for a very interesting art style. I might have to hang on to this as a reference.

So, there are a few things you could tweak with the anatomy, like the straight lines on some of their arms, and Bottleneck Bob's ear is too big and facial features are too high. He looks a bit like a mouse.

Good point! he wasn't looking very much like his portrait either!

New Bob

This looks real nice, but I have to say something:

The guys look much more tough in the sprites than in their portraits.

Both are nice, sprites and portraits, but in the latter they are much more stylized and look like less trouble. Specially the Cap'n, he looks much more civilized in the portrait, I think you should give him a broader face / more rugged look, like a couple of wrinkles or something, I'll try and do an edit later.

EDIT:

Here's the edit I said before.

Here's the latest update

New character, Max, will be swordspecialist.
Put some new effort in the background, added some AA with excisting colours.
Working on a UI. for the lower touchscreen. Also scetching on a 4th member, but can't really come up with something good enough. Thinking of perhaps some sort of animal.

Like it so far, but a name like "Max" doesn't strike me as feminine immediately. Something more like "Maxine" or "Lara Croft wannabe with a huge scimitar" should do the trick. What? Yeah, don't listen to the second one. Anyhow I'd like to see the 3/4 view more obviously displayed, especially on her head and chest. Not seeing her left eye much. Either let the hair conceal it or make that single pixel whiter.

There seems to be a frame missing on the balding guy's run cycle after his right arm is outstretched in front of him, although it's probably an almost-finished WIP.

May I suggest, for that last character and considering the setting, a tiger? If you've decided to go with an animal, that is.

I like the roughness of the BG tree in the first pic, overall it looks great. Only gripe is the legs of your characters are almost the same value as much of the background so they disappear. Your female character's HUD mug shot looks kind of odd how it's cut off at the forehead.

The characters overlayed on the Hud looks great but their cropping seems rushed.

Love this!

I think the darks you have in your background are taking up way too much attention. You could define the planes of foreground/background a bit more:

Gave the bulky guy a bit more of an aggressive stance, too. Also his portrait doesn't really match the sprite, so I widened his face, pushed his chin out and bulked up his neck.

I think the captain looks like Mal from Firefly

Definitetly pops better with the lighter background.

The first one looks quite good. The second one hurts my eyes a bit with the bright cyan.

You really took the pixel style to the next level Yuri, seems like everything is square! In a good way, I like it. Definitely agree with Eyecraft's update, and with piffany about the blue in "Sharkfin Island" being a tad too bright. Decrease the sat just a little and it should still pop without crossing the 'painfully bright' threshold.

Another thing that bugs me is the bright cyan in the background of the forest scene. It ruins the illusion of depth for me because it's so bright. Perhaps a lighter shade of yellow would do better?

Thank you for the comments!

Doing some work on them atm. Will be posting soon.

The Bright blue in the background is representating the sea/sky at distance. However, I think I will be taking it away anyway, to not ruin the feeling of a deep jungle.
The cropping was a styleissue. havn't figure out really what to do yet. I guess you are right about it seeing unworked out, will think of a better way to make them good, without destroying the style.
Have changed the saturation ect. and it got a lot better. Will be showed in the update!

Cheers

Title: Pirate Game - continued - again
Post by: coffee on August 16, 2011, 05:44:16 pm
Yoho!

So, im resuming this little game project of mine after a month or so break.

Here is the latest thread about it:
http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=12846.msg124565#msg124565 (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=12846.msg124565#msg124565)

Have started to look into the coding a bit since almost the graphic for the map sector is done and I must say it works out pretty well.
Just posting two of the first islands since I don't want to spoil everything :)

I have made a program for making the levels which includes all the tilesets. Still lacking backgrounds for everything except the first Island dungeon.

So here are the latest mockups:

Sharkfin Island
(http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj114/johanaronson/MockupVersion2.png)

Loading Screen, Still WIP stage
(http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj114/johanaronson/Mockupversion3.png)

First miniboss, How it will show on a Nintendo DS/3DS
(http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj114/johanaronson/Mockupversion6.png)

Seabattle, the things on top of the ship healthbar is the loading animations for the cannons. will be spinning until its loaded then show a cannonball instead
(http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj114/johanaronson/Mockup0Seabattle.png)

Towerstone Island
(http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj114/johanaronson/Mockupversion1.png)

I have not yet made all backgrounds yet as you can see in the last mockup. So I used the same as the jungle one just to not hurt your eyes too much with the transparent colour.
Houses are not completety done yet as you can see. Also, the sea will be freeroaming and quite big(Also the only thing that will be completely 3D) and there will be different areas that you cannot go to until you have conquered
the current pirate gang that owns it.

Would be cool to get your opinions before I head into the next phase!

cheers.

Coming along nicely. I would like to point out, though, that those houses do look a bit weird to me. Be it the lack of windows or the roofs, I'm not sure. Might want to try other designs just for the hell of it. It could be their lack of perspective that bugs me. The hills, the stairs, the bridge, they all have a perspective, while the houses do not. Just my two cents.

WIP:

Not looking to get more details, AA and stuff. So the style is clear

Wouldnt mind some critics :)

The only thing I can comment on at this moment(because it looks so awesome) is that the foreground tiles are fading into the background a bit.  It just doesn't look right... I personally don't think the blue tile background works very well.

I love your style!
The way you've done portraits though, they really need a border or something.
The top of the girl's hair (the sprite) is cut off in a strange way.
The hp bars could use a black drop shadow to make them popout, instead of blending with the background.

Looking forward to seeing more! :)

Thanks for the cc!

Ive adjusted a few thinks you mentioned. Still working on the Background. Don't know what kind of frame for the portraits I want to go for still, but im working on it. This sollution is only temporary.

Also working on some larger Foreground objects, palmtrees ect.

The rendering on the background palm tree looks like scifi greeble, which confuses me.
