Title: [WIP] behold! it's an evil deer-monster!

i'm probably putting these in a mockup.
at the moment i didn't want to focus on the lantern's light because i wanted to have a sprite that worked in various poses, even without a lantern in his hand.

before the pixel process:

Wow I don't know what these are, but they sure are neat.
any more info on these lil dudes? as far as pixels go in this piece, i really cant criticize anything, except maybe the outline on the bearded man, which is a little weird. is it pure sel-out?

thank you Stratto. that was meant to be some kind of sel-out, exactly; still you made me notice that the arms were somehow wrong. i've tried to put them on different backgrounds, and they didn't work.
i guess they're more readable now. and, as you can see, i'm adding a demon boar and an angel.

about the setting: the bearded man is a playable character, and so is the angel. they live in a 19th century city that resembles rome, fight demons and stuff.
i don't know how to describe the overall feel of it... the main source of inspiration are baroque paintings, architecture and literature; bosch, for the demons; beat 'em ups, for some violence and for the gameplay.

That's pretty awesome. I put more saturation in the palette to see if I could push more contrast, but I think I gilded your deer.

Edit:

Took TripleM's edit and added some dimension.

Since everyone is shading it, I did too.  :D

...Okay, what?

On the sprites themselves, though, they look great so far really. Perhaps try putting them on differently colored backgrounds, such as dark brown, or a darker teal and see how that would work out? As I imagine, you (the bearded guy) wouldn't be carrying a lantern about in clear daylight, which is what the background color suggests, now would he? And don't forget to make it cast a bit of light, later on.

@Phlakes: I get that. But I suppose you can technically file the vague comment... under... crit--oh, forget it. I should remember to take it easy on him next time.

He's probably really young and new to pixel art, look at his last few posts.

chimico: i really enjoy the style and direction you are taking with your sprites. id like to see more. The only real issue i have is some of the readability going on with the deer demon thing. the antlers and wings are a bit hard to understand at 1x. the little hanging gonads on the animals are a nice touch of humor. you can certainly get away with it on these rather bizarre creature figures vs doing it to a human character for sure.

looking forward to seeing a mockup :)

sorry guys! i'm back, at last. been studying for my exam, and on holiday  :-[
since some background colors just killed the characters' readability, i'm having more vivid colors and black outlines here.
this was hard! and so full of detail. the wings are grey and sad on purpose, the whole thing will be easier to read that way.

please give advice and edits for i need it!
