Title: Mermaid in the tub
Post by: |||| on February 02, 2011, 11:51:13 am
There's no mermaid in the tub yet.. :-[
Will be adding soon
- but thought I'd post beforehand.(http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/6431/clawfootpxba.png)
I don't know if that counts it out as pure pixel art because I used layers.. very back part of background(the design is wip) not drawn pixel by pixel yet.
I want to focus on next getting the mermaid into the set.. her head on our left. I'd like her tail and fin maybe hanging out of the other end near the faucet and pipes. I want her reclined and confident looking. Probably start sketching a couple poses first.. idk lets see what happens.

Here's what i came up with tonight, after realizing the first pose I had just didn't look right; less confident but good.
I may make her holding a cocktail.. and I may obfuscate the nips with tendrils of hair...
I'll do the hand and hair tomorrow night.
Edit:
Why are these distorting? I uploaded from image shack and when I look at the original upload it's fine but when I look at these two they're distorted. Her head got smashed a little and the dithering in the background isn't showing up right.

Her face is looking a little off to me. Looks kinda chubby, or something. Let me make an edit.

ALSO: That's a crap ton of colors you're using. Some of them are so close together, it takes a full zoom in and a contrast filter to tell them apart.

Yours--Mine

I reduced quite a few colors, some were unnecessary, and I just wanted it to be easier to work with.
I moved and shaped the eyes and eyebrows a little bit.
I edited the right cheek and lips to help with the facial structure.

It is coming along nicely, and I would love to see the finished version of this.

I do appreciate it Frawg but the edit doesn't look like the girl it's supposed to be.. she's not chubby; she's pretty small actually and a little fleshy. Anyhow I finished it; hope this displays truly:(http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2481/marlenamerm.png)

Perhaps it's the resolution of your screen that makes them disorientated?

Frawg's version looks way better though. Right now her face is chubby....very chubby for a girl. Grrrr, nudeness! :D

Seems to me you're mixing perspectives.

The floor is on one-point perspective, which has foreshortening to it.

The tub seems orthographic, it has no 'depth' so to say, it's the same size in front and in the back, it doesn't recede into the background.

The circle railing on the top as well.

It's a very interesting optical illusion.

Yeah I guess so Helm.. have two orthographic views conveniently streamlined by the vertical pipes. I thought of it as stylized but you broke it down technically heh.
(Helm also, that spartan of yours in four colors simply blows my mind; love your art)
I updated the pic above. I inadvertently cheated on the tub in the first posts. I re-drew the dithering once i realized that.
Hence I read Cure's tutorial on what pixel art really is.

Now about that face: I think Frawgs is ok but the forehead and lips bother me. I'd need more convincing to use it from some of you guys. I thought I'd post the couple pics I have of Marlena to help:(http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/3537/tmp1u.png)&(http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/3447/tmp2.png) she cut her hair since these were taken to look like what i drew (bangs)
Let me know what you think.
Edit:
Oh yeah sorry about the complaining.. i feel dumb for some reason i was zoomed out slightly on this forum so all the images were messed up.. thanks Coffee.

Probably not what some other guy tells it you to be.

tutorial found here (http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299). doesn't claim to be the end-all on what pixel art is, I certainly don't claim it's some solid entity with distinct boundaries, but it does have a section that demystifies the obscure medium for those unfamiliar with pixel art. There's a comments section if you disagree with the way the information is presented. I assume what he meant is that he used automated tools then read that they're usually not considered kosher.

piece is really lookin' nice. I might advise more AA on the curtain edges. she has kinda short bangs, especially for wet bangs, could just be the hairstyle but stands out to me. (her) left breast looks odd to me because of the definition at the top of it, should be a smooth surface from the chest to the nipple, imo. thumb looks maybe a pixel thick.
love the reflective surface of the tiles.

He tail and head looks weird, her breasts are too white, and the tail loses it's red color COMPLETELY when underwater. It needs to be fixed. Also on the tail the highlights are the only part of the scales that you really see.

Her head and tail look weird? i don't know how to fix that...
Her breasts are wet so they reflect more light; that makes them look whiter. if anything i should work on the hand.. i forgot to fix the thumb.
I don't see the problem with the water taking away some of the reddishness in her tail either.
maybe I could add some more depth to the tail... but is it really necessary?

Nice work, definitely took some time and effort and it shows.

If I had to be picky, maybe I'd wonder what is the dark line between her eyes? Is it hair or is it depth from her nose? It's the one that's straight up and down near to her left eye.  I'm just not sure.

Beautiful picture.
