What do you think of this pixel image of me? ???
any advice on how to improve it?

His face looks pretty messed up. The mouth looks like it joins into the one eye. Also the left side of his head (his left) seems to stick out in an odd manner.

Since your new, it might be a good idea to start a bit smaller (ok, a LOT smaller), 16x16 FF2 (Final Fantasy 2) style. I'm seeing a lot of pillow shading in the hair, pants, and shoes.
Judging by the shading on the shirt, I guess the light source is coming from top right. Making the highlights contour to the folds and grooves in the hair will really help to make the character pop out more.
