Title: Noitu Love and the Army of Grinning Darns.
Post by: konjak on April 11, 2006, 12:23:50 am
Hey, I just finished a game of mine, for all you 2D-lovers. It might not be 100% perfect in terms of polish, but I'm happy!

It's an action game with lengthy levels and worthless story, but that's sort of the point.

Thanks everyone. I fixed quite a serious bug, though.

Anyone having invisibility problems on level 4 should be happy now... can't believe I didn't notice it, it's caused if you die while flying once or more.

You'll have to redownload, of course.

Very good indeedio! Good fun gameplay (although I kinda' found myself wishing for bonuses I could attack the enemies with) and a really nice cohesive graphical style with lotsa' stuff going on. Really really nice. The sorta' style I want to achieve when I finally make my platformer.

There IS a shortage of attacks, but I thought changing shapes would suffice.  :)

I came across a bug on the magnetic crane on level 2.  It may have to do with me pausing it a lot because I had to type in another window, so each time I spaced (even when I minimized the game) it hit the pause button in the game.  Eventuallly the crane went up all the way and I couldn't see the character (I only saw the background of the part where the crane goes up) but I could move around and get hurt and stuff.

I haven't played past that, but so far it's very good.

Having played it some more I'm not totally missing extra weapons, there are the powerups which affect the different characters in different ways.

EDITED: Because I'm a moron.

This game is really creative. I just beat the sergeant guy, and goddamn was a tough battle. It's not very often that you find good games like this.

haha, if you minimize the game by pressing the - it can't unpause.

And keep "annoying" 02Joy... ;)

Woo! Got to the last level - love all the bosses so far apart from the hammer dude on level 5 who has killed me and the cheap reuse of the level 1 boss on there (tsk! That's a capital offense in my books! ;) ). In particular I thought the Level 3 boss was excellent and very funnily introduced and the Level 4 boss' joke I saw coming a mile off but it was still ace. :)

Good job, very nice game!

Have you coded it in C/C++ or used some kind of game-creator software?

(As a fellow Swede I enjoyed the "Parkera här" and stuff :))

Really cool game.

played it up to the third level.
But I dont figured out to save the game

Made in multimedia fusion right?

It auto-saves on exit. Just press up/down when you start a game to select the level.

Incredible. I got to 02Joy on my first playthrough... I have to say, he's one of the absolute coolest bosses I've ever seen in a game.. any game...

Absolutely awesome job on this. Everything about it is just infinitely appealing (other than the orange platforms against the orange sky on the construction site boss... that kinda threw me off), and with some obvious sources of inspiration (Link's Awakening, MegaMan 2?)... well, it's just awesome. Awesomely awesome.

This was excellent. Rare to find amateur-games of this quality. Feels like a mix of Megaman Zero (and the original) and Viewtifull Joe.

I've been trying to make something like this in Multimedia Fusion for ages, but I couldn't overcome the most simple function there is: Getting the character to stop when he hits a wall. I've been hoping to be able to ask someone about that. How did you fix it?

The character locks himself in the wall until the running animation halts. I fixed this by using box collision, but this removes a lot of functions. Plus, he still gets locked on the wall every time he hits it and then you loose controll. If you hold the direction-keys in the direction of the wall he's sometimes able to "climb" it, it varies given his animation. Sometimes you have to press or hold jump at certain times, but it always happens. Then there's the bug where his legs gets caught on a ledge where it varies if you fall if you try to jump again and the one where your head gets stuck to the box if you hold the jump button. I'm mentioning the last part because I know you set a lot of the background-objects to obstacle and not platform.

I'm guessing you used a few plugins, mainly because of the 3d effect at the last stage, that looked excellent by the way. I've heard the so called "platform-object" plug-in is supposed to fix a lot of bugs in the platform-engine. However, i can't get it to work (keep getting errors when I start it up,) so I don't know if it helps or not. Maybe I'm putting it in the wrong folder or something.

Anyway, Great game. Nice idea with the use of evolution as a power-up. Hope to see more.

Heh, I found something neat. You can punch both left and right at the same time with a bit of timing. If you attack, then at the absolute beginning of the animation, press the other direction, a punch "projectile" will appear in the first direction, then a new one in the other as the animation restarts. Kinda worthless when you can just do a spin attack and cover all directions at once... But still.

Also, the green bomb-throwing "ninjas" as I like to call them... Is that QuickMan's animation?

No, not really, cause you don't have to wait as long to recover from the spinny attack when you do that.

That's true... and also, it works fairly well in combination with the trick I realized works almost cheaply well against the green-bomb-throwing-ninja-dudes... That is, punching so slowly you never do an uppercut, meaning they never fly away from you, meaning you have exactly zero percent chance of getting damaged.

I'm kinda stuck on the fifth level, though... I only get to start with one life (no extras) and it's a challenge to complete that entire level with the multiple bosses and all without dying...

loving the mood because of the the nes refferences. the megaman/mario sounds, the monkey form feels like the little samson rat, and the punch effect is almost exactly like Monsters in my Pocket punch effects.

it's also clever how you represent the character of each enemy with gameplay (nuns are martyrs, zombies slowly pile up and creep you out)

the level design feels a little cheap from time to time but it all pays off.

This game has changed a setting on my shift key, now I can write any numbers... Any ideas on how I can sort that out?

If it's that stickykeys stuff that's been turned on, try pressing SHIFT 5 times fast and see if it brings up a menu.

Yea, I've tried turning them on and off and halfway inbetween and up the wall etc but it doesnt seem to make any difference, I'll try rebooting.  ???

EDIT: Yea that worked, strange...

I had a lot of fun with this, both for the gameplay and the presentation.  i only wish i could have changed the controls around (im an FPS whore, when when i want to jump, i hit space, which is pause....d'oh)

You can change the controls. Press ctrl+Y then click the input device for P1...in your case, the 1st keyboard at the bottom. Ta-da.
