Title: Indoors
Post by: TheSilentRoomate on November 16, 2010, 03:40:21 pm
So I'm slowly but surely working on this game. I am trying to use very few colors and use flat one color for most things. I drew up this room, but it's really boring looking, does anyone have any idea how I can spice it up? Thanks!

Well, it seems kind of obvious to me, but the word 'spice' should tell you what's wrong here.  The reason that Europeans went looking for spice was that their food was bland (or so they told me in school); using a single flat color is going to make things bland.  You want to keep things minimal, and that's cool and I respect your artistic license, but it's totally possible to cross the line from minimal to indecipherable-- like the problem of drawing a polar bear in a blizzard.  Ultimately, you're either going to have to use a little more color or add a little more detail in some way in order to make it clear that I'm looking at a bed and not a well, for instance.

Maybe try using a similar perspective inside to the one you're using on the outside view of the building, so two sides of things are visible, rather than only one.

For example: (http://files.myfrogbag.com/bhrcqg/roommate_indoors_edit.gif)

Ya know...I'm not sure if the perspective is it. It certainly helps though. Here are a few things I think might help:

That's pretty nice, though, you sorta got the colors mixed up for the two walls.
Makes for a wonky perspective.

Hey, love your style!
Just wanted to show you this edit:

I'm not really sure about the window, but I just thought with this perspective the left part should be hidden a little.
'Hope this helps!

D'oh. MicKo beat me to it.
Oh well, it might still be helpful to you.
(http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/421/roomfix.png) I did basically the same thing he did, swapped the wall colors around and spruced up the place.
Your character seems like a writer to me for some reason, so I gave him a desk and chair with some writing paper for him to go to town with. He also ended up with a corkboard on his far wall, maybe he keeps important reminders pinned to it to keep him from forgetting.
I messed with the bed, because the matress being the same color as the sheets was weirding me out, and also changed around the perspective on a bunch of the objects. I also angled the roof a little to make it look a bit more roofish, and brought the doorknob, and a few other things, down some to what I thought was his level.

I edited the character himself some, too. Gave his cowlick more character and made the back of his head less square, and gave him some sleeves (he looked a little odd without them, but if it was a design choice please ignore this).
(http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7038/housefix.png) The house outside got done over, too, because as it was it looked a little like a doghouse. (the door was really small, too, how did he fit in there?)

damn you guys! I can't keep up at all! Cicadas that edit is amazing! I'll get right on editing mine! And he's actually a cave exploring, stretchy armed crusader! Should I stick with the main characters colors that are in my display picture or the ones in this piece?
But for now

Bring back the squares in the sky, they were nice!

I like how this is shaping up.  The (minor) extra details made a world of difference.
