Title: Best Pixel Art
Post by: Moribund on October 07, 2010, 11:34:52 pm
I have a philosophy-like class, and we're currently doing a unit on art. There's a big project on the nature of art and quality and my group was thinking of doing ours on pixel art. Many people will probably have negative preconceptions, so I'm looking for something that will really wow everyone. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Head over to the Pixeljoint site and check out the gallery there if you haven't already.

Yeah I was just going to say that. Personally, I think Fool is probably the best pixel artist i've ever seen. heres his gallery http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/6741.htm

hmmm on second thought, snake is pretty awesome too. here's his gallery.

well (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/35624.htm) here (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/51844.htm) are (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/15585.htm) a few (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/36023.htm) of (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/10001.htm) my (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/20233.htm) favorites (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/50204.htm)
i have many others i like, but as i understand it you're probably looking for highly-rendered stuff that has that classical beauty.
and of course anything by fool or snake will probably wow your class.

Mmh these are all delicious. I was also wondering if anyone can recommend any distinctly pixelly beauties? I have a feeling that people wouldn't be able to discriminate between this and low res ink or something.

That's pretty vague but I'll take a shot.
How low res are we talkin' about here?

Maybe you're looking for more restrictive stuff
Ptoing (http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/2191.htm) often works with some oldschool restrictions
As does Lackey (http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/5486.htm?sec=icons&pg=2)
Helm's Spartan (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/12082.htm) piece is definitely something very pixel/computer related.
Carrion (http://noname.c64.org/csdb/event/?id=1610) does some nice C64 stuff.
You could also try searches for CGA (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/new_icons.asp?search=cga&dimo=%3E%3D&dim=10&colorso=%3E%3D&colors=2&tran=&anim=&iso=&av=&owner=&d=&dosearch=1&ob=search&action=search) or C64 (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/new_icons.asp?search=c64&dimo=%3E%3D&dim=10&colorso=%3E%3D&colors=2&tran=&anim=&iso=&av=&owner=&d=&dosearch=1&ob=search&action=search)

Well, even though it is fairly atypical, I agree with Cure's suggestion of The Spartan (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/12082.htm). You could start off discussing how the pixels are comprised on red, green and blue components. Also, you could talk about how subtle differences in pixel placement can alter the viewers' perception of the image - in Helm's image there really does seem to be more than just red, green and blue, but of course there isn't! It's a good example because I'm sure your viewers will be wowed by how different it looks zoomed in.

Also, many people immediately think 'isometric' when they hear 'pixel art' (stuff like Habbo and Eboy spring to mind for many). A great example of an isometric piece would be this one (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/29178.htm) by Fool. You could talk about all the minuscule detail that he's placed into that image. You could show close-ups of some of the people and talk about how he's managed to breathe so much life into those characters even though they're so tiny.

You might also want to touch on some standalone sprites too. Personally, I think it would be best to talk about something like the Super Mario Bros. Mario sprite, considering how iconic it is. You should mention that even though it only has 3 colours (excluding transparency) and fits within a 16 x 16 pixel canvas it still manages to be incredibly distinctive. You can even start moving around pixels in the sprite to show what a difference single pixels can make.

Anyway, good luck. Hope some of this helped, it was pretty much me just rambling though :-[

I think this thread can be considered a subdiscussion of the endless ones from the main discussion being "art" hence, you can't make everyone go "wow" by showing them a piece that just looks good and is well executed...except they are laymen :)
