Title: Dario and Army
Post by: Mistajaye on June 08, 2010, 06:41:19 am
Howdy mates ^_^ I've been having a bit of trouble with color composition. I just don't know what to stick with. Could you please tell me what you like and dislike, also I'm not too sure about the scaling texture.? Anyone with any insight? I'd be very grateful for any tips. I always love coming to this place for help coz you guys always give me really good Critique. Well anyways this is a platformer-sidescrolling game where you have to collect cards to create a deck and defeat your foe "The Phantasmagoria" which sprung up from Nuclear fallout in a WWIII type of setting. Also theres an evil General whom survived and he is now Half-Human, Half-Machine, who goes by the name Eger D. AnvilL. ciao ^_^ and have a wonderful day.

sorry not to lend anything else helpful, but how is this low-spec art?
and by briefly looking at your picture, I see a lot of potential alongside lots and lots of pillowshading! don't use pilloawshading.  it looks bad.  Pick a light source.
also some of the positions this person is in are impossible. Reality check.
I'd help more but I'm busy atm; I just think this should be in Pixel Art, not low-spec

Extreme banding here! Maybe you could learn from this thread Banding Primer (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=8110.msg92434#msg92434)

Refine your palette, superfluous colors diminishes possibilities to edit your work,
here is a before/after using a tool to reduce color count:

Like Anarkhya said, you can shave down your palette quite a bit. For this kind of sprite, four or five colours should be enough for each colour ramp. Also, try to define shape by putting your highlights and shadows in the right places. Unless your character has a spotlight pointed right at him he most likely is illuminated from above. I did a quick edit of his pants (bottom pic) to illustrate and bumped the colours down to 32 while I was at it:

Ah I see!. Bravo. Thanks for the help. Also I was wondering about the Armadillo scales, I think it needs to be redone. Any tips with that? and useful colors you think would look good for an Armadillo? Thanks guys for all the help! ^_^ I love the edits. Yeah I need to stop pillow shading, I suppose I rushed it a bit. But I was trying to illuminate the colors I guess I got a lil too outta control and added too many shades. *sighs >_>

References are always helpful.

You also have to think about an armadillos environment as well for it's colors.
