Title: Warioware D.I.Y. = Mario Paint 2.0 with scripting capability
Post by: Argyle on April 27, 2010, 01:34:51 pm
I'm surprised I've not seen anyone on here praising this game.  You make every sprite, background, element of music, and do all the coding to make microgames and comics.  The interface takes right from the pages of Mario Paint, even keeping icons and layout consistent, and has animation/onion skinning capabilities.

I don't have a camera on me or I'd take some pictures of the interface that I figure would do it more justice than the ones I could find.  The color palette is limited, but that's half the fun.

(this is during one of the built-in tutorials)

I'm no professional pixel artist or game developer, but this title has surely gotten me excited and confident in my abilities for advancing beyond their comprehensive engine (even if it is nothing more than a toy with open source components that lets you take it apart and build new toys from :P) and having a better grasp on the logic of coding.

Demo video of Matt Bozon of Wayforward (Shantae's Revenge, etc) making a Shantae microgame (4 mins 34 secs):

I've already made like 3 games that would make Gallagher proud with exploding watermelon sprites.

I really like it so far, I haven't actually made a game yet though. Only graphics and music. One thing I can say though, I really really hate the palette. Other than that I'm loving it.

You can download the Shantae game already by the way. I'll post my friend name or...code or what ever the thing uses so we can trade games and such.

Woops, thanks Gil.  I had the link all ready and copied when I was typing up the post but guess I never posted it in.

edited the youtube link into the above post, since the first result on the Let Me Google That For You (haha, never heard of that before) is a kind of slow link whenever I checked it.

now, *that* is serious concurrence for my yet-to-be-finished game-making tools on the DS, I guess  ::)

Once my flash cart arrives, Pype, you better believe your sprite editor will be gracing its contents.

Yargh, tried out one of the design challenges but I didn't double check what I thought the deadline was from when I read it a week ago so I missed it. Was fun either way.  Added it to my warehouse with some other things anyway.  I'm not a fan in any sense of Nintendo's online solutions for a lot of games, where you need friend code jumbling and whatnot, and this game would have been a perfect place for just anonymous browsing and gallery hopping of total strangers' games.

Haven't seen anything in your warehouse yet, Jakten.  I'd assume you've not added anything to it yet, but I'm not familiar with the distribution system.  I'm just hoping it's not something like where we both need to be connected online simultaneously in order to view packages.

And PypeBros, I got your SEDS software running on the homebrew cartridge, just haven't had time to play with it hardly yet.  I'll have to bug you sometime when I get time to toy with it a little more, as I'm sure questions will arise.   :y:

Sorry for double post, it's been a while since the last active response here so editing my last post would have been a little silly.

It looks fun, but I'm not sure how good it is, or if I should get it.

Is it fun, and is there enough customization that you can make games with unique concepts?

(Man, if only Nintendo had gotten into downloadable demos like Sony and Microsoft.)

I didn't see any demos on there. :/
Maybe I should check again...

No, they're really stingy about any demo releases.  They only had like 5 demos in Wii's run-time and they were all during the same chunk of time and none of them were all that great to try, or were games that have been out on PC for a good long while (world of goo).

But to answer your question, yes, I find it very fun :P
