Title: OMFG!!! Irish-Ninjas!!
Post by: Ro83rt on March 23, 2006, 02:12:26 am
Haha. I wasn't really thinking about irish ninja's when I was coloring this but I thought of it after I was done. C & C are well appriciated. I still feel like it's kinda blank though. I think it needs a bis 4-leaf clover somewhere....I know its a ton of colors for such a small sprite, but I can't help it. I'm a BIG Newb when it comes to pixeling. Any help on that?

EDIT: Defined the chin better.

I think that if you really want him to be Irish, giving him an irish flag would be a bit more sufficent than four leaf clovers. XD (I'm Irish by heritage, which explains the stickler-ness).

It's a good start, definately. I think his neck is too wide. It's almost as wide as his head. It looks like you've got a lot of shades of green for just a small sprite. I don't think you'll really need all of them.

Heh, bet he makes for a violent drunk.
I like it. good lines, nice pose. I did a rough edit, 'cause I have too much time on my hands. Hope you don't mind.

Palette: Like you said, there were alot of colours for such a small piece, and even at 8x, I couldn't tell where you used some of them. That's not necessarily a big deal though. I think low colour count really comes down to personal preference, but if you want to lower the number of colours, it is possible.
I increased the contrast, too. At 1x, it's kind of hard to see the highlights on the original. Lastly, I tried to add some tinting (that is, the shades are bluish, the highlights more yellowed), but I'm ne wto that myself, so it may not look too sexy.

Colouring: The only reason I changed any colouring was because I reduced the palette, and need to alter some lines (I couldn't do alot of anti-aliasing, for example). Some fold lines are thinner, etc. Nothing big. Oh yeah, I guess I added some more highlights, too, but that's because I got carried away. In mine, it looks like his close are wrapped pretty tight, in that binding, uncomfortable sort of way. :P

I didn't change anything on the lines, 'cause they look great as is, so that's about it. don't take my word on any of this though, 'cause I don't know what I'm talking about most of the time. if this is any help at all though, I'm happy.

Hey, Ro83rt,

This is nice.  I like the pose.  The fingers are a little messed up (there's only 2?).  You probably wouldn't have to worry about defining each finger at this size.  I think the green should be more green and less blue.  The teal you have now isn't really what we think of when we think of the Irish.  Also, any reason for having one leg with the bandage and one without?  Maybe it's just me, but I'd prefer it if he had the same for both legs.  I think his left leg and foot could be tilted toward the viewer a bit more, instead of being a 90 degree angle from us.  It seems a bit awkward.

As for color count being a personal preference: that may be true, but when picking the number of shades, don't pick arbitrarily.  If you have 10 shades of green, that's fine, as long as each shade brings something unique to the piece.  If two shades are indistinguishable, as many are here, you might as well get away with less and not spend your time filling up your pallette.  Also, for a more practical reason to keep color count low, if you ever decided to start animating, it'd get messy with a lot of colors.

Thanks for the help. I'm gonna work on an update soon. Thanks Tremulant for the great edit. Yours is a ton better than mine. Appriciate the help. How did you manage to get so much more detail than me and yet half the colors?

I think I'll try and say what Tremulant will say:
Reusing colors. Using highlights and shadow shades to define more clothing folds. Again, reusing the colors, but this time, the lighter green shades to add detail to the leg bandage.

Good to see you progressing. :)
