I started this about an hour ago. It's based off of this (http://pc-museum.com/gallery/rcm-022.jpg) image. I'd like some pointers - I have no idea where to go with the shading, and my line art could use a little work. Thanks!

I did this a while ago. Not pixel art, but maybe it'll help you.

Thanks, it doesn't help too much with shading or AA, but it is somewhat inspiring.

Not surprising, since this ref is flash photography: the worst possible kind of light, the photographic equivalent of pillowshading.
Look for other images with better light, don't need to look like this machine at all.
Check a real CRT if you get a chance, experiment with various kinds of light.

What I always do with shading, is just image the light source. Visualize it as if it were a 3d object and shade accordingly. Keep in mind where shadows will fall. Also keep in mind that it will be very bright (like almost white).
Here's a very rough edit I did on the top side of the monitor. I'm making no claim that this is good shading :P
In this case I visualized the light coming from the top right corner.

As far as AA goes. I usually do that all on a separate layer, that way it keeps the original image intact.

If so we meet in the same forum after meeting in the real world many years ago...

No sorry.

I think you should straighten out the original lines before you shade anything.

Just a quick update. I'll clean up the lines as i get to different parts of the image.
