Title: Tank [WIP] UPDATED! v. 3
Post by: reverb on October 27, 2007, 12:44:11 am
1st:(http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9236/tankbrianthegreattu0.png)
2nd(neat version):(http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/736/tankbrianthegreatjy9.png)
3rd(sketchy version):(http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/4169/tankbrianthegreat2kq8.png)

The lineart is by BriantheGreat from over at PixelJoint.  I figured coloring lineart wouldn't be too bad of a place to start off pixeling, so I looked around and found these lines that I liked.   I tried to get the glow from the explosion to be on the tank, but I'm not sure if I did it right.  Any C&C at all is GREATLY appreciated!  ;D

Thanks for your time,

You could be doing a lot more with this I think.
All of it is made up of flat planes with curved edges, giving it boring shading. I'm having difficulty explaining this, so uhh, yeah, look at lighting on edit.
Outlines on fire and explosions are generally bad, since they're pretty much light themselves.
You could really expand the secondary lightsource, right now it's just some weird lines on the outer edges of the tank.
And uhh, the tracks on the tank should be flat on the bottom, because it conforms to the shape of the environment below it, and moves by the traction of the treads pulling it forward along the surface.

UPDATE!

I slimmed down the lines greatly, removed the lines around the explosion, revised the star, followed Sherman's example of that red smoke (awesome, by the way), added some vents, and redid all of the lights and the shading.  I'm still open to C&C, because this still needs some work I think... I just don't know what else.

Thank you for your time and effort,

The lines are a good place to start. They were rather thick to begin with, fine from unpolished lineart, but if you are going to colour it and give it a finished touch, the lines need to be smooth and free of "jaggies". While doing so, maybe you should think of other details that could give the people a little more to look at with the tank, to give it a bit more life.

I think I like the first one more... had a Yoshi's Island kind of style to it. Of course, there was still a lot that could be done to it, but personally I don't think it should be the direction it's going.

I'd be inclined to agree with this... :)

So some clarification: You guys think I should go back to the original lines?

yes, perhaps study what sherman gill did to the lines.

UPDATED!
I redid everything with the original lines and cleaned them up just a tad.  I intensified the explosion glow, and used one less color than before, making it 12 colors (including transparency).  I redid the lighter greens, making them stand out a little more.

So, do you like this version better than before?  C&C is still welcome if you think this needs some more.

Thanks for your time,

I'd say lose the pure black :]

It works in yoshi's island, but CRT colours are kind of washed out anyways, so it looks okay-er that way.

A very dark (almost black) green would do nice things to the tank, I think :]

Colouring on Yoshi's Island relied heavily on the pointillism effect, as was pointed out in the Commercial Critique thread here on Pixelation.. I just wondered if that technique could be utilized here to make a camo pattern on the tank.
