My art teacher has this idea
planned for Sept 15, 2008. Deadline for submission is Sept. 30th, show will take place October 10th, thanks We've got this gallery in the new building at our school, and it's has several large LCD screens. The basic premise is to get display pixel art from different artists around the globe for a show. Given, it's still a ways off, but as far as interest goes, sound like a marginally cool idea?
Information
The ASMS Gallery is hosting a Pixelart-specific show in its art gallery in September (finalized date to be announced, sorry for any confusion). Which is where you come in. Submit something, old or new, any subject matter, so long as the medium is pixel art.
We assumed that wasn't enough to sell you on the idea, so here's some incentive.
Though this is a show and not a competition, the entries will be judged and awarded accordingly.
Prizes are as follows:
1st Place- $100
2nd Place- $ 50
3rd Place- $ 25
There's no cost to enter, and you can submit old work- or use this as an excuse to make something new. So there's little reason not to enter.
To enter, simply send the piece to my email at thereaintnocure@hotmail.com, or provide me a link in a private message here at the site.
It'd be very useful if you'd include your name, location (country/state), profession or student status, program used and any information you'd like to provide about the piece.
There is no limit on the number of entries, but prizes are restricted to one per person.

yes!
that's it. that's all i got.
-
Sounds very nice indeed I have to say.
-
Indeed. I'm in.
-
I'm in if you want me!
-
an awesome idea. I'd actually love to see that in person haha
-
given its a year, im sure i could probably complete something decent within that time...
sounds like a great idea!
-
Sounds intriguing. Aw shucks, I guess if it ever gets going, I'll try and send something in...
-
You better take a bunch a pictures and post them here... :mean:
-
yeah, im all over this one :D
-
I am EEN!
Hopefully I haven't lost all my talent...
-
yes, that gives me the summer to churn out some good stuff without screwing my schedule :D
-
Man, could've have asked for a better response. 'Preshate it, fellas. As for pictures, I will have graduated by then, but no doubt someone will be there with a camera.
-
The distant show is drawing near-er. I got a phonecall yesterday, and my art teacher asked me to look for actual submissions to forward to him.
I'm still unsure when the show is supposed to be, I'll get back with that information soonishly.
As for theme, I think we're going with "pixel art". So you shouldn't have to worry about subject matter.
Also, I doubt it matters how recent the art is.
So, to summarize, now taking submissions, which will be forwarded to the actual organizer.
-
I love this idea. I'll definitely try to put something good together.
-
This just sounds totally neat. How did you get your art teacher to do this, or did they simply think it up themselves? If so, it's nice they're interested in pixelart.
-
He got the idea due to my constant pixelling, I guess. His idea, either way.
-
If you're constantly pixelling then why don't you post more? :P
-
Lots of wips I'll never finish lying around. Lots of dead ends.
Luckily, there are members here with better work ethic than me willing to provide material to the show ;D
Rights to the work remain yours, of course. The idea here is to showcase the diverse nationalities and such, I guess tie that into how digital art is so viral, so if you're from an obscure country it might make up for any perceived lack of talent. This is to showcase amateur work anyhow.

im assuming its one piece per person right?
-
will you print it or will it be displayed on a monitor? Cause I'm thinking maybe of an animation
-
27" lcd monitors will be used
There is no limit on the number of entries, but prizes are restricted to one per person.

A bit of pretty useful information that I forgot to inquire about originally: The deadline for submissions is the 23rd of September.
-

Viral? Please do explain. This almost sounds like our work is going to be demonstrated as viruses. So should I give you an entry pre-packaged of a executable appearing as a PNG that deallocates random existing memory? :P I assume it's going to be showcased on shitty M$ Windows, so that's perfect. :P (Please take this as a joke...)
All joking aside, this sounds like a fun activity. You'll see some work from me towards the deadline (quite busy atm).
-
By viral I mean easily spread. Contagious, but in a good way.
Note to self: Never open any files sent by KratosX

please could you clarify?
-
Hmm. Well the dates were results of me parroting the information along, but the deadline is the 23rd, the show will be a few days after that date. Disregard the information regarding the 10th, sorry for any confusion.
-
I'd like to submit this http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/12082.htm
-
Are you actually going to name the "winners" for the show? Or at least who made it to the gallery? Because I'm geographically unable to see the gallery (though I'd love to) and my only hopes are pictures from it, that may not display all the works :(
Oh, and btw, I got your answer. Thanks!
-
Well the prizes are just for the entry part, the show itself won't focus on any one piece more so than any other. I'll make sure that pictures are taken at the show, and they'll be uploaded here.
I suppose it would be best to post a list of all the artwork that will be featured, I don't have the final say on that matter, but I can relay the decision once it has been made.
-
so, to clarify, animations are allowed?
-
Indeed. Animations are fine.
-
This sounds really cool, but im too chicken to try, being the novice pixel artist that i am.
Are you getting many submissions, Cure?
-
SHIT yeah he's gettin submissions! havn't you noticed that cash prize??? :ouch:
-
What bitty said (bitty's still alive?). They've only been trickling in recently, the startup and final days are where I expect to receive the majority of submissions.
But hey, quality > quantity, and I haven't had much of a problem with the former.
-
The date of the show has been pushed back to October 10th, meaning submissions are now due by the 30th of September. Apologies for any inconvenience.

I'm actually kinda glad. I had been working on something to replace what i sent you, but then i've had some troubles with my computer lately so i haven't been able to finish it. Hopefully i'll be able to get it to you asap, if not i guess it doesn't matter too much anyway.
-
Yes, the time has come, catching many of us off-guard. So for all the procrastinators and those whose schedules just got hectic (I fall into both categories), submissions are due September 30th. Which may very well be today, depending on your timezone. So if you'd like to enter the show, please send your submission(s) to thereaintnocure@hotmail.com or pm them to me either here or at pixeljoint. I can't promise late entries will be accepted, so send your entries as soon as possible.
Thanks to all who entered, winners and photos from the opening will be posted sometime in October.
-
Looks like I missed it with my horrible schedule. Best luck to all of you.
-
How was it? I guess it was yesterday, right?
-
My apologies for the late report. So I snapped some shots of the show, the images looked swell on the screens- better than on any of my computer screens (despite how poorly my camera portrayed them). Seven 27" lcd screens were used, set to cycle though the works assigned to each of them. The ratio of images to screen wasn't bad though (maybe ten a piece). I'm sorry to say my camera ran out of memory after just a small handful of shots (you'll notice the recurring characters), so while I didn't get a view of the show as comprehensive as I would have liked, I think I got enough to get a feel for it. There was a photographer from the local paper who showed up beforehand to take some pictures of the works (haven't heard if they'll run an article or not), but he had wrapped up and was in the back in the reception area by the time I'd retrieved my camera.

Once again, thanks to everyone who contributed to the show, let's do it again sometime (bigger, badder -2009? ::) )
-
looks like it went really well, great to see
-
I've gotta' say, it feels kinda' weird to know that other random people have looked at my works in a said gallery. Makes you wonder what they were thinking as they were looking at one of my drawings: *strokes chin* " Hurhmmm...Nope, I don't get it." *walks away and looks at other pieces*...heh
Also, Cure was this held at your High School, or some open gallery near your town? Wish my High School did something half as cool as this. Did they serve cheese and crackers? ;D
At any rate, this was very cool, and thanks Cure, for pimpin' our stuff like that. Makes me feel all gooey inside. From one Southerner to another, " 'Preciate ya' kindness, good sir."
p.s. Holy Cow, I got second? I got second! Yay!!
-
It was held at my high school (that I graduated from).
Yes, cheese and crackers were indeed served :D
-
I was hoping I might get a picture of my piece in the gallery. No such luck, eh?
I'm glad the show went well, and congrats to you all!
-
The Spartan didn't win anything ???
-
I could've sworn i commented on this already. Wups!
It looks awesome! And well done to the winners, great pieces. :) This should definitely be done every year. :yay:
I'm just wondering what that little white square is on the left screen of the bottom middle photo... :-\

Maybe it was a piece meant to demonstrate the power of a lone pixel? Or something.
Congratulations to the winners! ;D
Did the Spartan get fourth place? ::) I really liked that one.
