Progress so far.

I also have two little guys I made on the front idle to test this thing out.

Take the idle stance out of the animation. How many times are your feet right next to each other on the ground when you walk?

I only have three frames to work with. What would you suggest I do in its place?

if you only have 3 frames to work with, then you are correct in doing it this way.
as far as critique, I would suggest giving some movement to the torso/upperbody.. the shoulders look rather stiff, especially in the sideview.

Allright.

Thanks, I think it's an improvement. :)

Normally, your hands dont go behind your back and infront of your stomach, but swing at your side.

Just curious is this a platformer? like streets of Rage were you can move up and down.

or is it a rpg as in looking down on the character as your title suggest, if so I think your perspective's off, it'd look like he's lying on his back.

That sprite's got childbearin' hips! Just kidding. But seriously, I think he/she looks a bit bottom heavy. That's probably going to mess with your picture if it is a top-down view.

There doesn't seem to be much bending in the knee on the sideview. I'd try some more bending there to make it look less stiff.

As for the front view, I think I need to see it in action before I can tell very well if it works or not.

The character jumps up one or two pixels during his contact positions, then pops down when he's standing upstraight. It should be the other way around. Otherwise I think it's a fine base, especially for 3 frames.

I'm guessing this sprite is for an RPG maker game?

That's what I thought when I first saw it. Someone actually told me recently that the newest version of RM could have more frames in the walk cycle. I don't use it so I can't confirm that, but maybe you should check the help file or a forum to see because it would really help you smoothen out that animation, I think.
