hey
Looks quite nice... but I have a couple of issues :).
With the jump animation, to me it looks like he is punching the ground, rather than for stabilising his landing or whatever.
I also noticed there is no head bob in the walk cycle? which I think should occur when both legs are out streached.
Anyhows that's it from me :).

The walk cycle: looks like he pushes something out of his way with each step. The arms outward/inward swing should be reversed, I think. The legs snap. They're still for a bit. Looks strange.
The jump: Never seen anyone jump with their elbows up like that. So far as I know, the elbows are usually like, downward and the arms are like, out in front, from the arms swinging back first and then heaving the body upward. I don't see how you'd be able to get that kind of lift with an arm position like that. Okay, and the knee. I like the way it lights up like that, but then the hilight just vanishes. I think it'd be cooler if there was a transitional hilight where it faded away.
...OOOoooh, wait, now that I look closer it looks like you might have actually made the arms bend right, but it just doesn't look like it. Maybe some differentiation between the hand and the shoulder would be better. Also the way the arms snap from relaxed to jumping potion makes it hard to follow the movement.
Uhm, I guess that's it.
-
Some chest movement along with a shoulders swing in walk animation might looks more natural. Contact position frame may take some down movement too. =)
-
woo, thanks for all the comments people, ill update with your suggestions very soon.
-
Head bobs in walk anims are CRUCIAL. In fact, just bobbing the head of a character and moving the arms already looks like walking, so those are the important two...
-
[update]
walk:
not happy with it yet so crits still welcome!
jump:

i cant seem to make it so that it looks like hes supporting instead of punching with his right arm, help with that would be great.
also, heres another gbc char that will be getting the same animation treatment as the other :

Alright, quick tip for the suspending-with-arm thing. The only time I can imagine that you'd want to catch yourself with a hand is if you're going down fast, and possibly slightly off balance. So fast that your legs wouldn't be strong enough to keep your weight up, so you have to add an arm. His jumping doesn't convey any such thing. He's in perfect balance and his legs have plenty of leeway. On top of that, his shoulders have to rotate quite a bit for him to reach all the way down, so it looks like he is, in fact, reaching down for the ground, instead of having to catch himself.
I'd try to explain more, but I don't have time right now...
-
so just ditch the whole part of him touching the ground?
-
yes.
-
Quick edit on walking. Generally some fixes on arms. Legs - i don't know...

thankyou for the edit fool, ill be sure to learn from it and apply.
edit:
heres the update of the walk anim with the help of fools edit, im much more satisfied with it now:
heres an update of the jump anim, which i still cant seem to get right. trying to make him support weight instead of punch the ground. hes probably as angry as i am that i cant get the anim right
(http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/7586/chrisgbcjumpse2.gif)
and heres a little idle animation for the other char:

-
sorry for dp, but heres a directional update:

Ahh, the character doesn't look so strange now that I see he's wearing a hat. I was a little confused at first. Once you see him from all directions, it is a very cool looking character.
-
hey
I was just thinking... the head bob is a result of the legs being out streached, lowering the height of the entire body. So I think maybe you should lower the body/sholders and such also? so to make the legs look shorter when outstreached? but I'm not completly sure, as animation is only at pixel level. But yea, I think the term "head bob" might be a bit misleading, maybe it should be called "body bob", or maybe "leg bob"?
Anyhows this is just a thought, maybe others have some advise or whatever about this :).
BTW, I didn't realise he was wearing a hat also :).

nebopolassar: thankyou
yosh64: ill look into the shoulder bob. the legs thats outstreched in front wont get shorter because of the perspective he's in, if it was in a different angle you might be right. thanks for the comment.
hmm, i thought it was pretty easy to read that it was a hat. well even if it wasnt then it should be( and apparently is) with the directionals.
edit:
woo idle:
trying to pull off a bit of subpixel animation.
-
I think the new jump is much easier to read, and I really like the animations and colour use.
The idle, I think, is moving too fast and too much. It's hard to make subtle movements with such a small sprite, but unless you want him to be heavily panting the whole time, I would suggest trying to tone it down a little bit.
-
thanks razz.
how about this?
-
It still looks a little too fast, IMO. He would only be breathing like that if he was winded after some major fighting. ;D Slow down the animation again and try having him hold his inhalation a little.
-
Definitely an improvement. The movements look more precise and sensible now as well. Maybe you could also try keeping the legs still?
Also, I agree with Stitchy.
Good stuff though, man. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
-
I really agree with fool's edit on the walk. Yours looks a bit bowlegged at the moment. try bringing in the male character'ws legs somemore.
-
looking good
little edit on the idle

gliding, if i bring them in anymore theyll be touching eachother. ive already updated using fools edit in consideration, and im pleased with the walk.
dragonrc: thankyou, ive actually already updated the idle and its pretty similair to that i just havent shown yet.
thanks for the comments, guys.
-
wow, so he had a cap? I had no idea! I always thought you just didn't know how to draw the face
Hmmmm....you really need to do something about that, it has very little clarity in that aspect right now
I'd also play a bit with the actual shape of his legs as he moves...to give a wee bit more clarity to his movement, isnt really mandatory tho...
-
Even if they are touching each other. it won't look as wonky as the walk does now. I'
m sorry but its just awkward.

seconded. Pushing the legs together aint a bad thing, most people walk with their feet very close (close enoguh that the gap may not be visible for this resolution.
-
(http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/baybaybom/chrisap.gif) here....the edit I already gave you over MSN, only this time I tried to implement the cap
btw, nice subpixel animation for the stance, very adequate.
-
thanks man. whats with his face though? too anime-ish for my tastes if its erading to me right.
i forgot to give yall the updates, heres the anims currently:
walk:
jump:
idle:
-
well...you know how I thought it didnt read right because of lack of face features? I gave him a mouth and made the cap darker to diferentiate the face from the cap
-
Yeah, Ryu, in yours I can't help but see a dude with a wrestler-type/hick mustache-type-thing that goes down the sides of his face without ever converging on his chin, and the rim of the hat is the mouth, and the top is some bandanna, and the wrinkle in the hat is the eye. And he's got a mullet. See, even when he jumps he opens his mouth. TBH, the conceited one fixed up all of this nicely.
-
i thought it was easy as hell to read, jww thinks so too. yall need to stop intoxicating yourselfs with drugs please.
either way i made it even clearer, and more accurate to the char:
(jump)
(walk)
(idle)
the reason it fits the character more is because its a self portrait:
(photo by kayti mowry[mygirl] shes the only person that can make me look almost decent in a photo. amazing)
and i ALWAYS wear that hat. that and my red hair and my pale skin are my most important features, and the main things im trying to show in this little dude.
-
It looks nothing like a cap, and all like a 'stache, fix it up. I know you want to keep it true to life, but at this resolution and palette, you need to compromise. It just doest look like a cap.
-
I didn't think it was a cap either, but I'm not sure what you could do to change it other than changing the color. However, since forward isn't the only direction he'll be facing, it might not be a problem.
-
lol.. I always thought he was bald and had like a few hairstacks on the side of his head.
-
i don't understand this confusion with the hat. The first time i saw it, it was quite obviously a hat. Much improved walk ryu, looking forward to seeing more animations =)
-
i never thought it was anything but a hat. my first thought actually was "why the hat? main character has no face?"
-
the brim is too long from what I can see, shorten it a pixel. seems to look more like a cap to me.. :-X
(http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/2023/cap2kw1.png) (http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/8784/capsg7.png)

i wanted the perspective to be a bit more extreme than that, but your edit looks so much more apealing to me that i think ill change it anyway, terley. thanks.
