Not bad for a first attempt eh. Of course I drew it out first and scanned it but this is my first time actually coloring a sprite ever and then to actually complete it.

No, no, no!
Don't save pixel art as jpg. It really screws up the quality and makes everything messy and, really, pretty much just puts all your hard work to no avail.
-
But that's bmp not jpg.

Besides the point.. you;ve lost the quality of the image.. It looks rather good, but it'll need to be cleaned up and saved like a gif or png.
-
It says jpeg for me.
you also should get rid of the huge unused white space.
The sprite itself doesn't look bad indeed. Especially for your first go at pixelart.
Good job.

If you upload BMPs to photobucket they automatically turn into JPGs, fyi.

Thanks, but how can I get rid of the white space? I use Graphics Gale so what would I do?

Cropping/ trimming/ cutting the image wpuld be what you need to do.
I don't even know what it's called in gale (using photoshop) but that is what you need to do.
Hope that somewhat helped :P

Besides the fact that it's a jpeg.
I think his right leg is much too long.
The colors are just much too dark and the contrast between each color is so small that it doesn't even show up.
His upper body also seems a little long in comparison.

sorry im just too tired to fully explain but I tried to salvage it back into a PNG from JPEG reduced the colours a bit and tried to illustrate how I'd go about it. maybe someone else can elabourate on this.

hey Shin, I finaly felt like registering. Everything said you should realy take into thought, such as the darkness and JPEG! ahhh.. well after seening you trying to pixel, I grabed the version you sent me since the one you hosted is completely ruined and would take to much time to fix as Terley did. well here is mine..
colours are all listed with a total of 23 not counting the black and white, but its still pretty high I probably could of got it down lower, also I rushed on the hair.. so thats why its pretty bad.

P.S. First post!
Edit: alot of things I noticed look weird so im going to fix them later and edit the picture

theres one thing you need to know to make pixel art. contrast.
...
and a bunch of other stuff....

Kinda reminds me of Jww's avatar

Ahehe

Just a little GraphicsGale protip here: go to All Frames -> Fit to image to get the canvas snuggly fit around everything but the bordering transparent color. And then you could always assign a hotkey to that option.
Hope that helps you in your future pieces.
-
Thanks for registering Evan. You've honestly been a great help. My version, believe or not, uses a total of 27 colors so don't worry about you're versions color being too high.
Thanks comments everyone. I'll try to fix the errors ASAP.

First of all hello, welcome to Pixelation.
Your character is a very stereotypical longhair anime person. I know nobody asked me, but I had to mention this. Now to critique:
You're not using your colors as smartly as you could. The edit I edited falsely says 23 colors, it really has 30 of the suckers. Mine uses 17. A lot on the original are too close to themselves, and a lot are very close to black and can easily be taken away without any loss of detail or information on the sprite. If you're using MSpaint to do pixel art, stop. Use something where you can change your palette slots on the fly and on-screen so you can maximise contrast and tinting fast and precisely. Graphics Gale is a good free option.
The fabric you're using is underutilized, I feel. Check reference on good velvet suits for how to shade.
Check out SNK sprites for a pretty decent approach on how to shade cloth-on-human-being, I followed a similar route for the edit.
I know, I know, style. Nevertheless I found the angle of the left (ours) leg too much for comfort, and pulled it in.
Avoid sideways lightsources for fighter sprites. When the sprite flips, does the lightsource of the whole world flip with it? Or are you going to reshade every frame for the mirror of it? Top and bottom lightsources are usually applied in games, and for a reason.

As usual; fantastic edit and critique Helm, I'm sure it will prove usefull for me aswell.
-
thx I learned a bit from observing your colour choices.
-
Oh lord, must of had some stray colours because I only ment for the 23. But Helm... amazing, it just shows me I have a WHOLE lot of a way to go before I can consider myself at all decant. Hopefully I'll stay a while and show some of the stuff I make and learn from what you all suggest.
-
I prefer the 1st version you have at the top of this thread. Not sure any of the paint overs or reworks actually add or detract from the original, they are in different styles after all.
I can't help shaking the feeling I've seen it somewhere before though. Any chance of that sketch?
-
Helm's edit definitely adds to the original.
Better palette, better palette management, and better lightsourcing.
I can't say I like his pose changes though, and the hair doesn't look too great either.
-
To be honest, although helm's edit changed so much of the sprite- It was all pretty necessary.
The original didn't fit well in space-so the change in the placement of the feet and the legs was necessary. Colour management needed work-helm changed it. I especially like the work Mr. Helm did with the shirt and the pants- so all in a ll i think the original artist could benefit greatly from some study of Helm's edit.

im getting confused, isn't the image K0re posted, an edit (by K0re) of a previous version by shin?
Shin initally posted that image, which I assumed to be remake of watever he sent K0re.. Though it's been Jpegified, shouldn't you all be criting that? and not K0re's edit.. I mean, its a completely different size.
Or am I just getting it all wrong?
-
i think kores is an edit of shins.

Yes and know. I drew two versions of the same character. The one Kore posted was my first attempt, and the one I posted was my second more detailed draft. If you look closely at both, you can see the difference of shape between the two.

I'm confused, did he plagiarize you?
-
nope. me and shin are friends
shin made the picture he sent to me because i pixelized another picture he made a while back(sketch posted here too)
so he sent me it i didnt do anything to it untill i saw that he made another version and coloured/posted here so i made mine and posted too.

Glad it's sorted out. Any updates?
