What's your opinion on Pixel Fads?
NOTE: You have 2 votes. Pick the two choices that best describe your reaction.

So far, since I joined pixelation in the late 2003, I saw the "Kenneth style portrait" fad, the "Nem's amputee chibi" fad, and the current one.
In none of the cases I was the one starting it, but I think I joined early-ish in all of them.
While I dont really care about what's popular and all in real life, somehow on the boards it makes it feel like the community is tighter or something, and makes you want to join. Hard to explain, but yeah.
-
I enjoy watching, and participate if time allows.. Goes with most things.
-
Watching is good enough for me usually- I want to be different most of the time, so I don't follow the trends. Not to say participating in fads is bad, its just not my thing.
-
#3: I enjoy watching and participate when I'm able to. Sometimes the fad gets me in pixelling groove again. Fads rock :D
-
again number 3 here, and 4 since we have 2 votes, I'll always admire ;D

But i may also wait till my favourite pixellers join before i do anyway.. :-*
-
I usually dont find em interesting, so I only join if I have a particularly funny or clever twist to it....so I chose "dont participate" and "hardly ever"
-
hmmm.. the only one that comes to mind are the fad avatars, I made one but I don't use it :P
-
i saw the tail end of 'I ____ Sals' and nem's chibi and kenneth style portrait. The fadavatar is the first i've participated in though.
-
I think the best fad was probably the one with the fighter sprite fad. It was supposed to be a parody on C........'s work. (What's his name?!)
Anyway, I made a clown. Thing is, it was very low pixels (a la low poly) so everyone could join, but it still allowed for much creativity. And back then, I had time, hehe.
Edit: Colin Sick
-
I've only ever been involved with one fad, and it started by accident after Kable adopted that bloody awful image I drew as an avatar. Now that was a fad anyone could join because you had to draw 'em as bad as possible...
-
I hated your fad doctor! mind you, when you and Kable did it, it was one hell of a badass statement
afterwards it was just a plauge of bad art
-
Whatever you think, fads got people pixeling. (Might just have to revitalize some of the older fads!)
My current theory is that it's a subconscious desire to do 'doll' work that makes fads so popular. ~ Peppermint Freud ::)
-
I rarely join fads, but I finally caved to the current one. I haven't been around here long enough to remember any others, unless you count "style bandwagons" like the random dither style, and the "Only-Use-Teal-Gray-Bronze-Slate-Purple" trend.
I like your "doll" theory, Peppermint Pig, hehe. :D

Pff! All the art which resulted from it was excellent! See:

on the one hand, I admire it, and along the line join in somewhere (not in the least because it takes time to understand the fad)
on the other hand I say do your OWN thing, be creative don't let yourself get comfortable riding coattails ...
-
I think fads are a fine and fun way to practice adapting to another style, which help you expand your comfort zone. Though I don't know if I ever joined a fad... besides the Colin Sick one.
-
I usually just sit back and watch but I have joined in a few in the past. I remember specifically the Kenneth style portrait one. Oh who was the guy in the 5th row, 3rd from the right in the picture Dr Derek's posted? Wasn't his name like Mr H or something? I seem to remember a lot of popularity with that guy or his art for some time. I wish someone still had that stuff kicking around.
[edit]
Ok I looked around a bit more and found I had some of the Mr. H pieces that Pep had made. Hope it's ok if I post these Pep.

Could have sworn there was more out there.

He's back
Mr.H made some pretty aweful (awesome and awful have a child) art and was a bit of a sensation around 3 years ago I think. That blue-faced dude with red gloves was his avatar.
-
Yeah, Mr. H was an interesting artist.
Just mentioning his name makes me think of earlier days. Like the time in the IRC channel when HardshouldeR told me to speak only in questions for the entire day, so I did. Good times.
-
Oh man, Hardshoulder, blast from the past. He was really into Mr.H fanart too if i remember correctly. I remember when Mr.H posted a picture of some years older person, perhaps his brother and pretended that was him, while he was clearly about 12 years old. Good times, good times.
-
Haha, yeah, that's fine Delg. I should really see if I have any other fad items.
DrDerekDoctors, great memories you bring up also!
-
I took join right away, but then i saw the Join if someone else joined thingy, and thats usually what i do..
-
Bah, conformists! *does conformist hair swing/scoff*
Anybody remember the collinsick fan club?
-
Well, I'm still pretty damn new here, so I think it would be a little too early for me to cast my vote.
HOWEVER, as soon as I noticed the avatar fad thread, I quickly joined the bandwagon and made my own. So... I guess that says something.
