well i decided that i'd do a style study on Kenneth Fejer since he's pretty high up there on my hero list. I wanted to see exactly how he does his stuff, and the best way to find out is to do it yourself. So while looking at lots of fejer art, I made this mockup mixing his style with a little bit of my own.
things I learned:
- with Fejer, its all about selout. Almost every element in his art uses lots of selout techniques. and black is used seldom
- bright highlights are usually a no-no in this style, instead, think flat shapes that suggest 3d forms.
- usually, you have a base-colour and a bright-colour for every element. you use those to shade with, and all the other colours go to the outline (which is usually 2 or 3)
- Use simple shapes heavily, and keep it constant throughout the mockup (I could have done better at this). This also includes simple patterns
well yeah, thats about it
C+C as usual

I commend you on studying the work of a fellow pixeller so closely that you can match their stuff pretty adeptly. I don't have much critique for this, it is very good for what it is.
-
wow, it looks very kenneth fejer, it even has the airbrushed background. :)
I wouldn't mind seeing more of these studies.
I bet kenneth fejer would do a good job critiqueing it, where is he..

Well done. I wish your mockup was a real game though.

This is the mark that one has achieved true Kenneth style!
-
That's really KF style! Nice work Indigo. The color choices are so alike KF's.

Indeed! You win, Indigo!

Nice one Indigo Kudo's for someone :P
-
You achieved the style really well. I like it.
Was this based on my suggestion?
-
I hope KF will comment this =)

Bump.
This is really good, this could pass for a kenneth fejer peice any day.

wow I'm honored that someone would bother to study my pixeling style :) to be honest, i haven't really thought about how i do things, but i think you nailed it pretty accurately.
love the mockup :D even with the "gradient" ::) bg ;)
if i had to add anything to what you've already written, it would be that i try not to use 100% white either(sometimes theres no way around it though) i always add a little bit of yellow, since I'm not a big fan of too many "pure" colors, if you know what i mean.
oh and i never use dither, its the devil!
anyway, love the mockup Dan, looks really cool.
now go make it into a game, so i can play it ;)

Hey, look who decided to show up! I'm glad you liked it. And to say the truth, i didn't notice the 'no-pure-white' thing your talking about. Heh, i broke that rule a bit. Nice to know. I also realised that you like to hue shift into the purples alot - not everytime, but alot of the time. Anyway, I think you and GunstarRed should make a game sometime :)

HAHA! thats especially funny comming from you - since you tempt us with your mock-ups so often
Sohashu: What suggestion was that?
Thanks everyone for the kind comments - I might update this with some baddies or something and a few fixes later on.

It is in the general discussion forum. it was called artist critique sessions.

nice topic, be awesome to see more of these :)
one thing about your mockup indigo, the trunks of the tree dont seem very kenneth fejer to me.. just the selout reall
wondering if kenneth thought this too? and if so, could you show how you wouldve done them?

heh, maybe one day, cant say Kenneth and I have talked about it tho, I am sure Ken will admit that we both seem to share a love of cute critters and odd pastel colours, we also both seem to share a complete ignorance of our techniques or rather we dont think too much about how we do things, just do what we think looks good.
Anyway I love the mock up, esp that goofy look on the squirrels face.
