Title: Game sprite. [Warning: Newbie]
Post by: cm2001 on September 29, 2006, 05:34:37 pm
Hello everyone. This is, as you can gather, my first post and I was wondering if anyone could offer a critique or two on this sprite I've done.

It's not that good, as I'm sure you'll agree and I was wondering if you have any advice on how I can improve it. It's a little small right now and I might have to zoom it about double to get it to the right size, but I'm only a beginner to pixel art, so be gentle. What do you think? Should I redo it a bigger size or what?

Thanks.

First off, it looks good. In this forum you can click a picture to make it larger, by the way, no need for pre-zoom.

Okay, the face lacks defining features beyond her eyes. This is mainly evident when you zoom it in. I recommend you add a mouth, use a dark skin shade if you do.
Next, you have too many colors, you could probably have the same result with maybe half that color, so you definitely need to work on color conservation.

the dress looks a little pillow-shaded to me, otherwise i think you've got a good knack for this stuff, the character was very easy to read and her forms are crystal clear.  work on your shading and palette some more!

Thanks for the positive responses. I took a long time doing this, with lots of trial and error. The one thing I wasn't too sure about was the black outline, which I thought looked a bit stark (is that even the right word to use?) in comparison to the rest of her. I couldn't find any other colour that looked right. I did want to put a bit more detail in her face, but like I said, it's a little small to fit many expressions on. I've tried to do her bigger but the results have so far been pretty awful.

I think shading is definitely my weak point. Sometimes I can do it okay, sometimes I can't.

I've updated it a little and got rid of the nasty black outline around her head.

Here's another one I've done. She's supposed to be thinking about something, although I'm not to pleased with this one :

Her arms are too dark on the new pose.
Try lightening the shading.

Better?

Not particularly, compared to the face, they seem a little too tanned.

I knew there was something that didn't look quite right about it.

Still too dark. Try to make the arms mostly the lightest color on the face. She kind of lacks elbows. Her arms just bend. Aside from that this is really nice.

Alright, last one :

I don't know as I can do anything with the arms. The size of the sprite and awkwardness of their position kind of made it difficult for me to get this far. Any suggestions?

I spent ages getting this far I'm relatively pleased with it, but I think I've messed up a little- it could do with being about twice the size as she's kind of lost on a 640 x 480 screen. I don't think simply zooming it to double size will do, as it'll look either too blocky (or a bit blurry if I put it into fullscreen mode). It's a shame really. I suppose I could use it as a paceholder, though. Again, I suppose many of you have more experience than I do at this kind of thing, so what would you all suggest?

Surely with your spriting skill of the original you would have been able to do this okay? I think the lightness is now fine, but you need to define them more. And i'd either keep all the outline black/dark, or all of it selout'ed - not a mix of the two.

Well, I have my "on" days where everything looks okay and my "off" days where it doesn't, and it's still mostly trial and error at the moment. Hopefully my work will be more consistent in time.

Here's an edit I did to hopefully help you along:

I think you're not defining the chest from her arms enough, making it all blend in, and you're definately not making the structure of the arms stand out enough. What you were doing was going from all too dark arms, to all too light, instead of light inside and subtle dark outlines.

Okay, thanks for the advice everyone, I'll bear everything you've said in mind. I think I'll redo her at double size and see how it goes. I'll be back.

Seperate your tones a bit. The tones are too close to each other. Good luck!

Hm, has some good shading, a nice colour choice... needs a bit more features in the face area. Maybe you should darken the top of her shoes.
That's the only crits I can come up with for now :).
