Title: [WIP] Ricky Renegade's Risky Revolution (sprites and stuff for a game)
Post by: Ddawg on November 15, 2011, 01:40:19 am
I'm making a game called Ricky Renegade's Risky Revolution.

It's a fighting game, and has that 3D platformer aspect that's kinda like Battletoads or Double Dragon.

Anyway, here's the player: (http://i41.tinypic.com/168sh81.png) He's a mutant that'll be born in the near future to protect Earth from aliens. He has super strength and only 3 fingers...and he wears that weird helmet. XD

Here's an enemy: (http://i44.tinypic.com/35341tg.png) An alien with tentacles and a horn.

and here's the tileset (so far) I'm using:

and finally, here's a screenshot of the game:

Ideas? Suggestions?

Oh, and can someone please give me an example for a walking sprite?

Right now I'm seeing lots of problems here. Before you begin the walk cycles it might be a good idea to re-arrange priorities and work on the original sprites. Some reasons:

Lots of errors in anatomy and structure on both of them. Looks like you tried to put arm muscles on the first guy, but they didn't come out too well.

On top of that (no pun intended), the character designs could use some work. Mutant man doesn't look very "mutated", at least not what I'd expect. It could be a cheap halloween costume, actually. Same with the other. No offense, in either case.

Style seems undefined as well. What are you going for? Cartoony? Or something more serious?

Aside from that, the tileset's lineart is messy and can still be clearly seen, and the ground tiles look a bit like water/sludge. Recently I've been hearing fellow pixellers recommending a more painterly approach, building up from darker colors.
Some examples of rock tiles for you to look at might help. I'll dig some up and edit the post, although they're easy to find, really. (Mainly old RPG games, and some tiles by well-known pixel artists.)

May redo a sprite as an example.

1) You're right, I was never good with anatomy. Suggestions, please? :D
2) Yeah, the idea was for him to have HUGE muscles...that didn't come out right, like you said. Plus I'd like to emphasize his hands, show that he's mutated. Oh, and he's human. He's just a mutant.

...and what could I do with the alien (the one with the tentacles) to make him look more alien-y?

3) I'm going for video game style...kinda in between cartoony and serious.
4) I figured the lineart needed to stay jagged to show that the rocks were sharp. And you're right again about the ground...idea that might help? :D

EDIT:
Here's a quick fix of the arms I did.

Better? :)

(oh, and, just to clear it up: the guy in green is the mutant. The other guy is the alien. ;D )

Although there are lot's of room for improvement here (as for most of us!), the graphics are very functional. Readability of sprites vs. background is good, and the shadows next to the walls really help identifying them as walls.

The art suffers from pretty bad pillow shading, and I think you could try using only two shades to to help against this. I also switched the green color a bit, and lightened up and simplified the rocks.

Okay, I cleaned up the lineart, took away the lighting, and changed the color on the ground.

Good? :D

Before I change any lighting on the characters, first I want to get their anatomy right. ;D

LOTS of room for improvement!

I just wanted to chime in so I could say this reminds of NES Battletoads for some reason. The first level, specifically.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, ptoing! :D That was really useful. :D

I changed the ground tiles. It's now dirt, cause I thought that would go good with the rock walls.

I also put lighting back on the rocks, but this time the rocks don't look shiny. They look like rocks. XD

I'm still working on the player, I'll post him soon. ;D
