Closer to heart than intended? ;w;
Am I the only person who completely dislikes Pkmn graphics? D: I love Pokémon, honestly, and I believe I always will-- things you grow up with kinda stays, doesn't it?
But damn-- One of the things I /wish/ could go to the next level are the graphics. Despite the fact that they're all pretty, some simple mistakes make me iffy. ("Why the hell is her overworld sprite changing the way she holds her bag from left and right? WTF cheap mirroring. D<")
... Not to say that I'm better. In fact, I'm worse. ;w; But I'll excuse myself and say that GameFreak/Nintendo is a company, and I'm only one person.

Rip it apart-- It's a Pkmn center after all! :D

nice work. the roof confuses me though...where's the light source? and how is the roof shaped? I can tell it's straight in the front of that dome, and that that's a dome, but I can't tell about the lighter part the dome sits on. also, the overhang above the door is confusing me too. looks like there's a light in the front of the building and somewhere above it...maybe? the slopes on the roof are dark though.
-
(http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/8261/pc1bh6.png)
Uh, yeah. From above the building /and/ from the front. D:
Let's see... uh..
Kinda like that?
The reason parts on the top of the roof are darker is because I wanted to show that the lighter area is at a higher... plane? Yeah, that's it. So the lighter area is at a higher plane.
The slopes of the roof /aren't/ supposed to be dark? Damm~
-
the slopes on the roof pointing away from the light are supposed to be dark, not the ones pointing towards it. they'd actually be lighter than the top plane on the roof.
I get that the lighter part is a plane now, that's kind of what I figured before, but I don't understand the shape of it. it looks like the roof goes (starting in the back, at the bottom)
up a 45 angle slope, flat plane, up a small 90 angle, flat small plane, and then hits the dome. but if you go from the front, you go up a 45 angle slope, and hit the top plane? that doesn't make much sense unless the top plane was pointing towards the front of the building at a downwards angle, having the back end higher. the back would actually be the height of the small 90 angle, and then gradually slope downwards.
maybe this will explain it a bit better.
ugh...took me forever on that roof! it really is confusing!
-
Waitwaitwait--
This be what you mean?
Edit: It actually /was/ meant to be a downward slope, but if it really doesn't read well, then I suppose I can't do that. :'(
-
(http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/5900/pokeroofdl3.gif)
Ehh...?
-
Edit: It actually /was/ meant to be a downward slope, but if it really doesn't read well, then I suppose I can't do that. :'(
you can never say that!
you are here to learn, and you have to force yourself to make such things, leaving apart terms as 'i cant do that', saying instead i have to be able to do that :D
just an advise, the better you do all things is when you have to do them.
ps: simply look for some references ;)

D:?
You know, level roof to not... so... leveled? :'(
-
nah, the slope shading is a good idea, it's what I thought to do, but flip it around... if the lighting is in front of the bulidling, and the slope is high in back, low in front, it's pointing towards the light, so it'll be brighter, almost as bright as the front slope of the roof, with the pokeball on it.
the behind shading looks good, but maybe stick with the same style? instead of switching to gradient just for that, seems like it'd better to go with a small gradient of your colors or figure some kind of texture, not sure what though.
I like the second one the best, it looks level and it pulll up away from the slopes. :y:
going from your second edit:
-
I think the cause of the problem is that the viewpoint of the slope, as well as the position of the light makes the actual first image the correct one.
It just does not leave enough tools to show the slope. Maybe if you would change the lightsource position, that could help.
Here is my edit:
Also, do notice that Im a complete beginner, so take everything I say/pixel with a grain of salt. Especially what I pixel.
-
(oops)
-
I second the vote for number 2, and for Joseph's shading edit. I tried a little edit of the facade, since it looked kinda squished, and because the PC is a really important building -- it should stick out significantly from normal houses.
I heartily endorse a total graphics conversion mod of Pokemon. :D
Edit: ah, frickin wrong button. Sorry. If a mod wishes, please delete the above DP.

I'm not /exactly/ happy with it yet, but I wanted to know if I made any kind of mistakes with those... edge thingies on the logo. :B
-
I don't like how the panel the logo's on seems like it's staring straight at me. Maybe thin the sides by a pixel (moving the vertical hilights outwards or something) ?
otherwise, groovy.
-
(http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/1010/wgwery4.png)
I'm not sure what you mean. D: Or, if I did, then I wasn't sure how to fix my mistake.

BUMPDATE--
(http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/2168/wgwevp3.png)
I tried to add on the dome. This one is a little small, and I'm going to prolly make it bigger. However, I wasn't so sure about that shadow right there, and I wanted to know if it looked okay before I continued on with the style.
-
The edge highlights on the 'dome' might be a bit much, well, the lightest ones atleast. Maybe have a 50/50 dither of it instead? :)
-
there wouldn't be a shadow in the front of the dome...the light is coming from the font, the shadow would be in the back, but you wouldn't see it anyway, so no worries about a shadow.
use the same color as the plane the dome sits on, for the highest curve of the dome.
-
(http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/temporicide/Pixel/pokaymawn.png)
I just don't know.
-
(http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/5363/wgwejg7.png)
Um... I made the dome bigger, removed a couple highlights. 50/50 dither on what? D:
Thanks to Joseph, there is no longer a misplaced shadow on the dome. -- And isn't that what I did? The top part of the dome is the same colour as the plane.
And... me neither, honestly.
-
Made a quick edit.
I think that the Pokéball should be wider from this angle. And the sign should cast a shadow.
-
seeing a wide pokeball isn't very eye pleasing my brain. just looks like a fake pokeball now, even though you're right, but it still looks odd...both ways actually.
something needs to happen with that pokeball though. there's no reason why it would be straight on like that if the sign isn't. what if, you finished the roof, without the pokeball sign on top of the canopy, and made some columns to hold the front of the canopy up. then, attached to one of the columns, is a pole sticking out and a pokeball (wooden) sign is attached...you know, those signs that swing on small chains. it'd have to be a smaller ball, so maybe it wouldn't look so weird being straight on. having a small pokeball on the current sign wouldn't use up enough space.
it sucks, I know, but you get the point: (whoops, forgot to take out the original sign)
the dome is looking much better, and yeah, the tops are the same color...I don't know what I was seeing earlier.
-
50/50 dither on what? D:
The uhh, edge highlights, on the top of the cylindrical part. :P
-
(http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/2919/wgweui9.png)
Thanks for the whole shadow thing. Yeah... I dunno what the hell I'm going to do to that Pokeball now. I really like it, but if it's in a wrong perspective... But if I remove it, what else am I going to put up there? That sign was simply made for the logo. Damn...
And now I have no idea what to do for the /rest/ of the building, because this Pokeball problem is gonna bother me. XD
-
???
-
I think the problem isn't really with the pokeball itself, because if you change the shape of the ball, it loses its usefulness as an easily identified symbol. So perhaps the perspective could be partially fixed by adjusting the top parts of the sign to be more in view?
-
I guess the artists had to consider all this when making Pokemon eh?
-
But they're a company with decades of experience.
... I'm a fifteen-year-old girl.
Either way, I'll get an edit done today or tomorrow. D: Watch this space.
-
BUMPDATE?
I just... don't know what I'm doing anymore. XD
-
Well, yeah, 's been a while since I've said anything in this herr thred, but yah, the new one fixes what I was talking about. Nice progress.
I can't see anything to crit.
-

Nah man you have done a great job so far. :P

Now for an item shop. :D
-
In time, in time... if I haven't killed myself already with /this/ building. XD
(http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/3272/12255459ju7.png)
Yeah, looks very boring right now. I don't know what to do, and the shading doesn't seem... right to me.
That thing on the door was meant to be a tag, but I don't think I'm going to keep it. Either way, I want to know how I can make this more cheerful; Pkmn centers are naturally cheerful, right?
'Pokémon Center: Always by your side.' :D
-
Perhaps you could change the color of the walls to a warmer yellow color. As it is now, the blue color is rather cold and unfeeling, certainly not the mood which should be exhibited by a Pokecenter methinks. Yellow is a pretty cheerful color.
Good work though. I think the tag looks fine.
What do they do with the pokemon that don't make it?

*gasp*
Could... that happen?
As far as the little pokemon center goes, if your wanting to re-vamp the game your probably spending to much energy on this one little shop. I think it looks fine, and the tag does kind of read as a doorhandle to me, so I dunno... once I knew it was a tag I like it a lot being there, so I guess it's up to your discretion. But like the guy above me said, i'd go for a really light yellow. Almost off-white maybe? I dunno really what color it's supposed to be. I never watched the show and only played it on gameboy (religiously.)
So kudos for bringing back childhood memories! *hug*
-
Yeah, it could. Do you remember the Pokémon Tower? That was a cemetary. -holds hand to mouth- When I was little, that place freaked me out.
Today, it just makes me frown-- partly because the music is too cool for a cemetary. XD
Uh, not too sure. You know, they could have an ambulance. 8D Maybe that's something I should do after I'm done with this.
Oh, that colour's a place-holder. I really don't know what to colour the front. Uhh, I dunno, I'll see what I can do.
<: -hugs back- Ditto, my friend. Ditto.

Yellow walls and big windows = happiness.
And Pokemon is set in a magical world where being poisoned, lasered, electrocuted, and set on fire merely forces you to take a bit of a lie down to recover your composure. ;D
-
True-- don't forget frzn. 8D You can get frozen too.
-
Flowers on the windowsills? ;D
-
Flowers on the windowsills? ;D
Or it could be easier to have flowerboxes on the ground below the windows.
Anyway this is really nice. :) I would say the roof seems to be more contrasted than the rest of the building, might be an idea to darken some of the shadows on the walls.
-
(http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/4806/12503486kw1.png)
Nuu, I know. D: -needscontrast- Hopefully this one right here is better.
I... didn't think about flowers. Do you think I still need them?
So far, I'm having problems with only one section:
The sign. As far as I can assume, most everyone is happy with the perspective. But... the bottom looks strange now. Anyone else seeing what I'm seeing?
Edit: ... Well... maybe I should work on the structure beneath the sign to know how to do it? Ehh...

BUMPDATE:
Kinda going back to basics? It really doesn't have much of a hospital-y look with the shutters.
I'll prolly return to the sign, but I thought the side-pokeball seemed like a good idea.
I went with the hospital-y colour suggested before, but much more contrasted.
-
I really like that. The asymmetry adds a nice touch. ;D
In the hypothetical inside there should probably be light on the right side of the floor coming from an unseen window. What building has just one window?
On the other hand...
What about something more like this?
(http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii201/temporicide/Pixel/pokayman2.gif) (changed doors for practicality added ledge over windows and pasted on the pokeball from my old edit [fit just right!] to dramatize the perspective of the mid-lower half)
Asymmetry is great for composition, but with a Pokemon center I think it's about readability rather than artistic license. I assume people, when playing a game, would be alienated by that.
I suppose it's all to do with your goal - to replicate the environment of the game or to showcase a fresh interpretation?
someone will probably post a screenshot of an in-game asymmetrical pokemon center, i just know it <3

Just to be a jerk ;)
Not sure which game it's from, but I seem to remember an asymmetrical mart as well. Will do a quick search. (Not trying to invalidate you point, just showing how those Nintendo dudes do it.)
EDIT: And here it is.
-
The orange is a tag; Not a door-handle. XD I suppose it's unreadable, huh?

XD Well, all PKMN Centers are asymmetrical.
See (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8864/51969334fw2.png)?
Either way, I'm going to take a closer look at your edit when it isn't 3-30 in the morning while I have a Chemistry /and/ a French final. D: I dunno, I was thinking of making other buildings, and perhaps reaching the point of making a mock-up or something.
HAHA~ The mart is red. XD That must be one of the beta screenshots. It's still asymmetrical, though. <:

i say bring back P.C

-
XD Well, all PKMN Centers are asymmetrical.
I haven't played Pokemon in so long, I've forgotten things like that. :P I suppose that's what research is for.
-
I don't understand the logic behind the roof design at alllll....
Anywayz, I liked the Pokéball sign up top!
-
I'm kinda a Pkmn geek, so... c: I often forget to realize that other people don't remember little details like that.
M-My roof design? ;___;
I tried to put back the Pokeball on top.
Edit: Hahaha... Now my old design looks kinda laughable. :-[

-
i like the blues in the wall of the original better than the yellows.. the new version looks too yellow all over it as if the sun is setting or something.. so i guess it depends what you're going for..
-
Okay it's time for an intervention >:( We are your friend :hehe: But :yell: This thread is almost becoming anti-critique in that there's a huge amount of iterations of the same pokemon building roof with various almost-negligible alterations :mean: Nitpicks are fine and dandy, but finalize this already :( Move on  There will be other buildings in your life to design ;D
-
How 'bout I go for that mockup idea then? 8D I learned a lot, so I think I can do something better now.
-
Anything but another page of that roof again and again!!!! :'(
-
I'm kinda a Pkmn geek, so... c: I often forget to realize that other people don't remember little details like that.
Nah I'm a Pokemon geek too, but my DS broke last September and my I lost my GBA so I haven't played them in a while. :/ Wish I could.
If you're gonna continue in the vein of Pokemon design, it could be cool to show the effects on the Pokemon center after Groudon uses earthquake. :3
With little Sentret corpses, you know.
-
(http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/2817/pokeshopzr9.png)
-
hey
Yep, I prefer the blue bottom of the original.
I think it looks odd how the door goes so far in also, I think you should maybe bring it out a bit. Also I think the sign looks like it's kinda facing upwards? I think this might be fixed by either dimming the shade of the roof right behind it or something.
edit
(http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/5417/89370668xo1edityosh64db3.png)
I done a quick edit to kinda show ya what I mean. I didn't end up dimming the shade of the roof behind, but instead got rid of the highlight under the sign and brang it all down a pixel, I also brange the door forwards a tad.
cyas
