The russain mafia forced me to make a topic to collect all the fad avatars so here we go.
Hope i got em all (the order might not be 100% right, but whatever)

-
Check younit's source. You might be surprised. Glad to see that guy again ;)
-
that's a pretty insane collection, alot of nice work.
-
(http://imagehost.ensellitis.com/images/659206619.gif)
i made one too, cause i am a fad whore :P
-
Check younit's source. You might be surprised. Glad to see that guy again ;)
Hey!
-
It's not much of a difference, but mine's edited, I fixed a couple of things, especially AAing.
It's really amazing how everyone stepped up to the plate and created very similar yet unique avatars.
-
I've updated mine just recently. Now with added animation and classic GameBoy colours.
These are all awesome and it's great to see such quick reaction with all the members here to participate.
-
So is this like "self-portrait, oldstyle vs newstyle" fad? if so im in!
-
I updated mine as well, just the bg I think. Sorry ptoing. Still no animation.
Love the update, PB!
-
Selfportrait = Mandatory
Animation and Oldstyle or whatever = not
-
then maybe il make several olskool versions and animate those :P see how many styles i can fit in.
-
gas, i didnt know that you were clark gable in real life
-
<< Updated to fit both criteria. We look like a proper crew yo. 8)
-
I updated mine. Its AAed...badly.
Animation coming soon.
-
updated my oldschool frames with ptoings help so that they should be error-free now and actually conform to the c64 restrictions (had quite a few stray colors before)
-
UPDATE:
Rather poorly animated, with Microsoft Paint colors. :y:
-
Wow, before I read that, I wondered what pallette could look so terrible. :P
-
I have an animation now but no animator to erm, animate it. :'(
damn you graphics gale free edition!
-
Try Microsoft GIF animator.
-
Ty Faktablad. ;D
<Now with animation
c64 Colours.
-
at some point we should all post photos of ourselves for comparisson. i know in my portrait i shaved and gained a couple pounds of cheekflesh >.<
-
My portrait is (i think) very similar to my actual face. My real nose is a bit smaller, and my cheeks are probably a bit fuller.
Meta|Fox: You're welcome. Looks cool. btw: it's FaktabLAd. :D
-
(http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/6602/joshuaavatarresizebz8.png)
Eh, might as well join in? Hehe...
-
My face is longer than in my self portrati, but I was working from memory. And I'm much handsomer, of course; not even the best artist could capture my beauty.
-
if anyone could slow down the first frame so it holds for longer than the flicker frames you'd make me the happiest man in the world ;)
animation http://akira.ensellitis.com/pixelationavatar.gif
this frame needs to be slowed:
-
I think I might have an epileptic seizure now.
-
seizureriffic one hyperlinked
-
There's much insane awesome here, that I am tempted to remake mine to fit the criteria better instead of the circleloop it does now, and the likeness isn't very close either, but hey, it's ok to not be the same as everybody else :P
-
I didnt really want to partake in this fad... but I think I should just to be a part of it
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/9412/mehg8.png)
used my ID as reference, one of the few photos of myself I like lol
not completely happy with it.. but its good enough, I didnt plan on using it as my avatar anyways :P
edit-
not animated btw, maybe later
edit-
(http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/7932/mechetu5.gif)
coz Im modest like that :y:
-
whoa .TakaM.... thats awsome. in my opinion way better then your current avatar.
Edit: posted as you just posted you animated version... which is even cooler.
-
heh thanks, I was gonna do a maddox thing.. but che is cool too :)
-
Monsoon2D's avatar is my favourite. Megaman = Bonus cool points
-
gas, i didnt know that you were clark gable in real life
Adarias, that's what happens when you are 1337 wannabe.
looks more like Rubens de Falco to me.
-
Let's see here...
* New forum design
* It's called Pixelation, heh.
... AND there is a new avatar fad.
Yeah, like I'm going to miss out on that. Check out all the suavenessness.
Will add animation later. Hopefully someone doesn't snipe my idea before then. :)
Oh, and hi everyone, long time no post. If you know 'finite' or 'vapid', I'm he. If you don't, thas coo'.
-
(http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/9066/elkavatar2gw5.gif)
-
So that's how you look, then?
-
yep :P
-
Not exactly my place to say, and it's good that you were inspired as such to do any sort of art, but you're misinterpreting half of this improvised activity.
-
Yeah, it looks great, but i think it'd be better to have that intergrated into the personalised flashy bit, rather than the general portrait. :-X
-
TBH all of the other avatars actually show us... Giving a face to pixels we create :P... and yours (while being pretty good) just seems like an ordinary pixel-art piece, whereas ours serve a 'purpose' if you will.
I think it would look cool if you made a normal version of YOU and animated it so you morphed into this creature.
P.s : Shouldn't this be under challenges/activities?
-
i always sucked at selfportraits :)
-
What's your point?
-
Yeah, just do it, dude. Give it a try. Maybe you have always sucked, but it doesn't mean you always will.
-

heh, i had to try to :-).
Somehow i like that metal+ skin one alot :-).
Btw, let me just introduce myself since i don't see anywhere i can and because i'm new.
My name is Wouter Verhoeven and i go by the name of Aeon Vision.
I pixel for around 6 months now and i really enjoy it.
Soon i will post some of my latest work here on the forums.
First work you'll see from me is the fadAvatar and my signature at the moment.
My other intrests are PoolBiljart, mostly 8ball and 9ball.
And just meeting up with friends.
I'm 14 years old and i'm in the second grade of highskool,
( Already did it, they told me to do it again! pff )
Well that's about it for now.
This forum is very promising!

Me :'(
(http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/3566/portraitkx5.gif)
I shall improve it. It doesn't seen to fit properly with the others =/.
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v159/SuperS51/tiki.gif)
Not exactly like the others, but similar.
-
then maybe il make several olskool versions and animate those :P see how many styles i can fit in.
Make something. Less talk, more pixel. ;D
-
(http://pixeljoint.com/files/icons/full/fadlr.gif)
The low-color palette is by Brian the Great, used with permission. It just might just be the most accurate pixel representation of myself. :o
Hmm, now that I look at it in 2x, the face looks too wide. Maybe I'll edit it later.
Edit: small changes made to lines from nose/mouth.
-
I feel so cheap.
I didn't even use a palette for the low-col portion of mine, I just used GGales color redux thingy.
BRB.
-
FIXED (thanks orbofwisdom) and avatared
used this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_palettes#Apple_IIe
not the restrictions though. the flicker is pointless but interesting.
for anyone looking for a palette to use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_palettes
EDIT: Xion yours is so rad. i keep watching it to catch a glimpse of TR
-
@Akira: Much better, I like.
@S51: As has been said, the point of the fad was a self-portrait, more accurately, one pixeled at 64x64 and increased to double its size. Atm yours stands out from the bunch quite a bit.
-
(http://imagehost.ensellitis.com/images/729239438.png)
Hi everybody.
-
Cure: You're right it has very little in common, my mistake.
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v159/SuperS51/fad-avatar.gif)
Decided to do one that actually followed the point of the exercise. :)
EDIT: Added animation with Kabuki Quantum Fighter stylez.

hey larwick, Ive already found an edit of your avatar:
:P :n:
-
Maybe it wasn't an edit. Maybe they were separated at birth.
-
thats pretty similar to his explanation lol
and in a professor farnsworth kinda thing, Im sure I crossed several lines doing this
but out of boredom I threw a couple of these faces together:

Big C64.
IM going to animate it all together soon. This challenge made me realize how much I love the C64 pallette. Its so much fun.
-
Every time someone says they love the c64 palette a dead kitten is ressurected and is all cute and shit and purrs and rubs its' face on your shin.
-
I think I only got half a kitten but it's made from pure cute
-
Hawken: great job with the avatar, but perhaps another 2 frames where the vomit is flying toward the viewer. At the moment is just appears!
-
Vomit?? I think he explodes into 8x8 tiles :D
-
mine was kinda wrong the first time, so I made a fix:

:P :n:
Haha yes, i'm glad someone else saw that. I was chatting about it on the PJ IRC with some peeps when it was accepted. I didn't want to be an ass and start accusing him of anything though.
And LOL Takam, that's funny. They all look really good now.. Is the first post updated yet? *goes to look*
-
ill prolly update it with an anim soon. not as simple as the others but oh well.

Me neither. I'm pretty sure I'm the only blonde though!

I am blonde/dark blonde. Depends on the light really. In photos it seems brown-ish.
-
Me neither. I'm pretty sure I'm the only blonde though!
None's black-haired here actually. But everyone knows...
all the great pixelers here have black hair
-
Well actually.. my hair is naturally black. 8)

Mine too :)

Cool. But if everyone starts to love it, and we run out of kittens, what happens?
OK OK. Generally speaking a lot of people on other forums have signed up just to show off the Fadatars(patent pending). So we should have things like this more often to attract members who are actually here to pixel, and not just trying to hire us.
-
Wewt.
I'm too lazy to animate.
Correction.
I'm too lazy to animate well.

Sega Master System palette anyone? Palette fading ahoy!
I'll probably add more animated bollocks to this later, but I'll keep the same URL from here in.
-
@Indigo: Heh thanks. I'm trying to get back into the community so you may see a bit more from me.
ptepid, that avatar you made looks great! I'm loving it. Going to animate mine soon!

Hi pixelopolis crew,
I don't know if my attempt in this fad avatar is good enough to be inserted in the list ...

-
Well I liked this thing so much, being the shallow up myself vain... searching for a word that want get me band (someone else think of one) guy I am I made one. I really need to work on the animation and there are a number of other problems in the piece but I doubt I will be changing it much. Why try and make it as perfect as me. -
(http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/2861/meeeus4.gif)
Well, I'm in a much better shape now, but I don't know how to AA it, so it isn't nearly as smooth as the others.
-
I Fixed mine now! Proper size. ;D
-
I think it could use a little bit more contrast, glad you changed the size :D

hi.
As i promissed here it is, I hope you guys like it ;D

edit: I'm thinking of changin the hair color cause now i look at it seems black, and i don't have black hair.
-
Did one.
-
Hooray! All I'm going to do for tonight, used the 4-6 color palette everyone else was using, maybe needs more colors, maybe will work on it more tomorrow. First pixels in almost a year.. Peace out.
-
Dogmeat, this looks like it was badly color-reduced.
-
(http://interaktiv.vg.no/filmextra/bilder/personer/patrick_stewart.jpg)
-
Even if it's not ripped and just remade from reference, you should always supply the reference you're using. And also, this is extremely fast and dirty work, you should really clean it up, aa it and whatnot. Now it's just not very aesthetically pleasing at all.
-
HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN!!
-
Thats go to be one of my favourites. :-*
-
I made one, it's quite terrible though. Doing portraits are really not my strong point. Some later day when I'm good enough, I'll re-do this.. but for now, this is as good as I can do. :P
(http://yuhkaz.satansam.co.uk/files/fad-avatar.gif)
-
HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN!!
I couldn't agree more with feron, a magnificent piece of art!
scary too though :P
-
First female!!
you did a good job too :)
-
Dogmeat, this looks like it was badly color-reduced.
I didn't color reduce, I traced the outline of picards head from a pic and used the pallete everyone else was using to shade it. I was really tired last night and forgot to mention it was a draft, I suppose saying "all i'm going to do for tonight" wasn't enough to get that point across. I plan to work on it more tonight and smooth him out, and I'm really considering adding a few colors. Bear with me, it's been a LONG time since I've pixeled and I'm like the tin-man when dorothy first encountered him.
-
First female!!
you did a good job too :)
thanks ;D
well the thing is that I couldn't resist to make my onw after watching all you guys do those amazing portraits...
To Helm and Dogmeat: seems that old habits never change... >.<
-
(http://www.mindcrank.com/picard.png) (http://www.mindcrank.com/picard_new.png)
Touched it a little during a meeting, still working on it.
Think the left eye needs more detail, want to smooth out a lot of the individual pixels, etc..
Helm, good to see you're still around :)
-
Lawrence's avatar.
Brilliant.
-
@Dogmeat: Omg, holy crap, you're Patrick Stewart? That's so cool. Never knew you were an avid pixeller... ;)
Love that one Lawrence, and Feron, i can't believe you forgot about Stitchy! D:
-

The truth is out!
Once I finish my picard I'm going to do a Data also. I forgot how much fun pixeling was, it's so addictive.
-
Love that one Lawrence, and Feron, i can't believe you forgot about Stitchy! D:
Stitchy hasnt posted in the official fad avatar thread, therefore tisha is the first female to use on pixelation. :mean:

I hate this, this is so badass, why did I have to find out about pixelation now? I am so discouraged from pixeling now.

updated mine. Mind editing the block to show the new file?
*edit: I forgot i was a mod :) updated first post*

haha indigo, awesome update! :y:

Woohoo! I joined the fad!

I really like the c64 palette. I barely gave any thought to my choices and the colours still came out good.
GOODNIGHT, you better join in on this. I'm drooling over my keyboard at the thought of a portrait in your style.
EDIT: a couple edits.
EDIT2: With fixed zoom

Greetings to everone in this community: artists, posters, mods, admins, and lurkers. I've been reading your forum now for a few days and I was quite taken with the sense of comraderie and benevolence in the name of pixelated art.
Please add my humble submission to your collection of avatars, if it pleases you.

Mirre, that's excellent :)
Hmm, the first post really needs updating by now.
-
Please accept my apologies.
This isn't an excuse, but an admission--the creation of this avatar was a first for me in two ways. It was my first attempt at doing computer graphics (I've been a long time oggler but have never tried it) and my first attempt at animation.
It took a very long time--in the process I learned how to use photoshop and image ready in a day using Adobe Help. I'm sure the more experienced among you could have knocked this out in a few hours. It took me much longer.
But it seems I didn't follow the guide--when I looked at the gifs I only noted that they were 128x128 and used an orange shaded background. I didn't realize that you were supposed to create it in 64x64.
They say first impressions last the longest, so I hope I haven't started off on the wrong foot with everyone.
Therefore, please accept my sincere apology.

HAHA, GA. no problems at all.
This was not an exercise to begin with, and there are no strict rules either. It's just that I did my avatar and people seemed to like it and made similar versions.
I like yours, reminds me of old dos games. Good stuff :)
-
Ptoing, glad you could enjoy my style. And Helm also, thank you if that comment was for me about "unique" style.
I see a great many designs here from obvious talents. I wonder what would result from a little collaboration?

Yes I was reffering to you. I was very impressed by how when color came on in the avatar animation, you handled the eye coloring and to degrees the lips and subtle chin variations of lightness, without wasting shades. Though the piece retains a somewhat rugged edge, not completely pixel-art-smooth which is very very rare that I find charming instead of thinking 'FIX FIX COMPLETE MAKE IT RIGHT'. So um, I guess I really like your avatar.

Thanks Lawrence! I really like yours as well. The lightsetting and animation is top notch.
There are really alot of good fad avatars collected here. They're pretty impressive and that's why I was so inspired as to do one myself. To see if I could keep the standard, haha.

what I was impresed about was besides everything, the metal gear Cameo, you really moved me with it <3

Kind words sir. I like yours as well. Your odd choice of colors and the economical way in which you've put them to use is artful and eye-catching. Using the animation to shift your dithering around on the backdrop is neat. Excellent attention to shadows. Again, your color economy is quite good. Hope to see more of your work as I delve into old posts. Any good ones come to mind that you can link me to?
what I was impresed about was besides everything, the metal gear Cameo, you really moved me with it <3
I moved you? You have moved me, my dear, with your kind praise. Thanks for noticing my MGS cameo. The layout isn't exact because of the space limitations, but I feel I've captured the essence of the "codec" screen.
As for you, I find your avatar to be--sumptious. Perhaps even delicious. Why? You've employed a naturalistic style to what is normally symmetrical. Most of the avatars have complete symmetry (except for hair) between the left and right eh sections of the face. But I see a slight turning of the head in your piece, and small differences in size and shape. It strikes me as something you labored over as a true artist would - capturing the essence of life without trying to straighten nature into manmade preconceptions. Does that make any sense?
I'd love to see more of your work as well. Any links to posts or galleries? I have nothing up as this was the third piece of CG I've ever done. Heh.
....
Let's see. To Elk! Elk, my friend, I saw in one of your posts that you don't think you can make your portrait or some such nonsense. Will you at least try? You can obviously make a face. Now just make yours. Get a mirror and stare at yourself for a while. Then slowly build up the pixels in your graphics program. Do your best, take your time, and share it with us. I'm sure some of these fine people can give you tips or give you a nudge in the right direction if you're having trouble. Just remember, once begun is half done!

Updated my avatar.
I added a likeness using the magical 16 color palette that all of those old DOS games used. Also reduced the colors on the main portrait from 184 to 16! This animation is still weighing in at 226k, even after color reduction and using transparencies anywhere I can. I'm learning this process so any suggestions on how to squeeze out some more bytes would be helpful.

Hey GA, I like that new one. very cool use of the EGA palette. I had a look at your animation and you could shave of quite some kb by removing all that dither you got going on during the fades. just make proper inbetween colours for the fades and not let photoshop or whatever you use dither it up :) Dither compresses way worse than solid colour, esp random dither.
Keep it up. :y:
-
No more dithering for me. Thanks for the advice. Somehow there's a new freedom in minimalism I wasn't expecting.

Yay, think i'm remembering how to do it. borrowed some colors from ptoing :)
Can i get in the main thread now?
-
Hello,
I am new here. For now I only looked at a few threads, but I think they give me inspiration.
Pixel art is something new for me, but I think it's fun doing it.
I am currently working on a lineart.
I will post it, if I feel it's good.
Now to my questions.
What is a fad avatar?
What does fad stand for?
Is it an abbreviation or an acronym?
When does someone deserve to be in this fad gang? :)
Thanks for reading :)
-
It means 1 guy did 1 thing.....
And all these other guys took his "concept" and used their creative talents to assimilate that concept to produce something unique but staying within the boundries of what makes up the concept.
-

First of all "fad" is more or less the same as craze, something that is hot right now. Just try to picture fashion, when people start wearing similar clothes because they become popular. (btw the dictionary is your friend)
Now putting it in the fad avatar context, all the similar avatars here on this thread would be fad avatars.
And it's not like you have to meet any requirements for joining it, just pixel your own avatar :0
-
Maybe the main page shouldn't be updated. That might be too much awesome for one page!

Updated yet again, did an animation of my final:
For the older images:
OLD: (http://www.mindcrank.com/dogmeat_06.gif) NEW: (http://www.mindcrank.com/dogmeat_06_2.gif) FINAL: (http://www.mindcrank.com/dogmeat_final.gif)
Made a bunch more modifications, so it looked more like me. The pic i took of my head was at a weird angle, so I had to use that and also a mirror as reference, but I think I have it pretty damn close. Let me know if you guys want to see the ref.
-
Just look at that smile! You belong on a can of campbell's soup!
GA
-
THanks GA,
unfortunately, I actually look like that. Except the open mouth part. Funny, the extra frames for the animation took me no more than 30 mins.
-
Actually, Dogmeat, I like your previous fadatar much more...why did you change it?
-
The Picard?
I took the advice of someone on this thread and did myself, I still plan to do picard and data though, i just needed something to rebuild my skills with first. Or do you mean a previous version of the one I have now?

This is the one I love.

Picard
My Girlfriend - needs more work than worth posting on here. update later.
Lots of work to do on both, but my eyes are bulging out of my head right now, and I need to quit obsessing.
-
The overdithered style isn't very flattering blown up Dogmeat- notice most entries use a lot more simple, cell like shading that maintains its appeal at 2x.

It is hard to believe how FAD my AVATAR is 0:
Sixteen colours of dottyness. It looks a bit dirty, if someone sees something I sould change for the better, please tell me :]
Animation coming if I ever come up with something amusing.
EDIT: I just realized that I still have stuff to do but, alas, it is in the middle of the night and I'll just change the picture if I update it. Critz R ztilL WELCUM as I'd deliberately put it. :D
EDIT2: Updatzerd :]
-
jad: i think, while they work great for the hair. the two darkest browns does not really fit as skin tones. it kindof makes the neck look like some sort of jaw strap for a helmet.
or maybe it would be enough to just add more lighter skintones to the neck. and also the nostril area.
-
Woo! First proper pixel art in...too long. A year and a half, perhaps? Too long, regardless.

It even looks like me, if you squint a bit.

SEE UPDATED IMAGES BELOW
First one has hires restrictions, I think. Second is hires edited (doesn't use any restriction aside from the palette). Third is an attempt to fully use the potential of the c64 palette.
And I've just realised that there are a few problems on the colours, but I'll fix them later.
And I want C&C, please. ;)
-
Filax, man. The C64 pal looks awesome. Completely slapped me in the face and reminded me that when editing palettes you're allowed to edit the actual pixels too. No C&C from me i'm afraid, just caught my eye and i had to comment. :y:
Nice stuff from everyone else too!

Colour problems should be fixed. Let me know what you think.
@Larwick: I'm glad you liked, man. You should do a c64 version of yours too, I'm sure you'd do something awsome ;D

Holy, Moly. They are awesome, the first two are very simple and look superb, but the third is mind-blowing.. :y:
-
Forgive me if I'm unable to see what everyone else is seeing but what is so special about the 3rd sprite? It seems apparent to me that everyone is excited about the fact that it uses a C64 palatte, but what else? I just want to understand :)
-
It's just damn cool pixel art dogmeat. It looks chromey and shiny... Ooooooh shiny ;D
-
The C64 sprite is really cool looking, but the shadows make it look like you have very large cheeks and a concave upper lip. :P

c64 palette and wide pixels but I didn't stick to the "3+1 colors per 4x8 tile" limitation. I'll try to fix that soon.
No Tremulant, I feel late :)
-
Sorry if I'm being extremely dense, but what IS the fad?
C64 colors?Horizontal bands in the bg?
-
The fad is having an avatar that's a portrait of yourself. Most people also copied the horizontal bands and the palette, some people animated theirs with other graphical restrictions, but the fad is just the portrait avatar.
-
ok what the hell, I did one. It ain't animated or anything. I mainly did it for some more Amstrad CPC practice as am working on games for the old machine and need to practice the wide pixel mode some more as am to used to using its 4 color 320x200 resolution. This portraits based on an old pic of me cos I currently have really short hair that's so freakin' boring to draw.
-
without trying to come across as a complete dolt, how the hell am I supposed to easily scale it to 2x after having made it at 1x ??
never mind the above, it as easy as doing a 2x image scale with nearest neighbour :D
1x (http://imagehost.ensellitis.com/imagesv2/3691274793fadatar.gif) 2x (http://imagehost.ensellitis.com/imagesv2/2194416994fadatar_large.gif)
-
Zoom to 2x and take a screenshot then crop everything out fo the screenshot.
-
yeah allready thought of that, but what with the animation I REALLY didn't feel like doing that with all the frames.
besides, I fixed it easy peasy
-
man wolvey, thats awesome. i still remember the old pics of you looking like logan
-
Loving yours Wolverine. That palette looks great :D
Nice anim eq, but when you grow a hairy beard it seems your neck dissapears?? :wah:

shit LOL you're right, I hadnt even noticed it. not even when scrutinizing it at first after your comment.
I was like wtf is he talking about and then suddenly I saw it happen hehe
will fix that tonight when I get home.
-
Couldn't sleep (yet again...) so I put my headphones on and messed around with mine doing a simple animation.
The demon face flashing is a CPC version of my 'Amon - Apocalypse of Devilman' avatar I use on MSN and used to use as my DA icon.
It's not great but it'll do.
-
Nice stuff wolverine!
That flickering would maybe look better with a white bg but - ah hell forget it I'm off going home now, bye and nice evening gals n'guys!
-
Wolverine: yay! It looks great and that anim ation is swell. I really like your colour choices!
-
Hm, never did many portraits, so it looked as good practice, besides the whole fun of it.Problem is, it looks like me...30 years in the future :P About the "animation" (cough, only two frames, cough), I had Monty Python's The Mouse Problem in mind, but now, looking at it, it kinda reminds me of Tom and Jerry.

in your edit the highlight on the right eye makes the pupil and cornea look a bit smaller, kinda un balanced compared to the left eye.
Whats got me confused; is this a male or female face?! It's anime metrosexual! :hehe:

Metrosexual? Androgynous would be a better descriptive word, since metrosexual is a reference to lifestyle and not appearance...

Your defiance very much disqualifies you to make any such statement. And seriously, get rid of your negative crap elsewhere.

uhm..
there's no way to change another person. it's up to them to change themself.
best bet is to learn to accept others for whom they are, and this goes to both of you, helm and dogmeat..
just a suggestion, nothing more.
lets keep the peace.
-
Helm just made an edit trying to help, not saying "THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE". In this case here Helm has done nothing wrong or bad whatsoever. Dogmeat is the one who should apologise.
My 2 cents.
-
every perspective is equally valuable..
I wasn't refering to the edit helm made.
it could be seen that helm's response to dogmeat's simple question was provocative towards dogmeat, causeing dogmeat to respond in an equally provocative nature..
we shouldn't dismiss one for the other based upon which one is more or less provacative.
I simply suggested what i did, and hope things move on.
-
I've always respected you Alex, for the sheer fact that regardless of what's going on, on this forum, you seem to always be the "mature" one in comparison to most people on this forum. I think that's what's been bothering me since I've come back, most of you are way too serious, and immature. No-one gives good critique anymore and it seems like everyone is being real fake.
I aplologize, for swimming in the immaturity pool with some of you.
I suppose I just want pixelation to be what it used to be, but I've realized it never will be.
I'm outta here, gonna stop trying to make something out of nothing.
The new forum is good, has some neat people, but I just can't take this monopoly of mods that seem to dominate the forum.
It's my own problem, peace out.

un-dithered is much better, you should only really dither when trying to give the impression of a rough texture, especially when your final image is doubled.
just add an extra colour if you want it to look smoother :y:
-

I'd say this is bullshit. You can perfectly use dithering for blending colors, giving volume, smoothing and so on, and not for just giving "the impression of rough textures". It pretty much involves mixing dithering patterns (not only sticking to one, though you can if desired), knowing light sources and the goal of dithering itself within the picture, and of course knowing how to do it :X

:D That looks great. Wonderfully done.
-
I'd say this is bullshit.
I'll admit I did skip other purposes dithering is useful for, but I did that just so my post would seem on point because I believe all the dithering has done is make lego's face look rough
-
i actually like the rough look... its what i look like when i havent shaved in a few days...
-
:D That looks great. Wonderfully done.
Thanks, I`ve tried to do my best! ;)

Changed my avatar animation, hated the alternate style.
-
Terley, why did you make yours puke water? Bit of an odd choice don't ya think?

I don't know.. :( ???

I think waterfall-mouth is pretty rocking, personally.

Terley. that's so funny :D

The hair is gorgeous, Zoso, but the shoulders are dirtied by dithering, which just doesn't hold up as well at 2x.
-
Thank you :P.
Yea i know, i did't really know how to make the shirt good.. :P, anyway ideas how i should improve it?
-
Quick attempt. Not exactly photo-realistic. It's 1 color, animated between three frames to simulate 3 shades.
EDIT:
I made it transparent (making it a little softer on the eyes) and added a background to better match the others. I'm tempted to go nuts on this, because I know smarter dithering all over and a frames (as opposed to 3) could probably create a much smoother image, but...eh. If anyone else wants to experiment with the idea, feel free. I used Photoshop and Ulead Gif Animator and outputted a 50fps animation with transparency.
EDIT2:
Did the BG mathematically and was able to get 9 different 'shades'. This was just using 3 ditherings (dots, dithered, solid missing dots). I've seen guys like Ptoing with a helluva lot more ditherings than 3 in a piece. It'd be cool to see a larger piece flickered at 1x size and really maxed out - see just how much depth and detail can be gotten from 1 color and some animation.
(http://www.adamtierney.com/adamface2.gif) (http://www.adamtierney.com/adamface3.gif)
-
Oh my. Epilepsy warning! Interesting effect though, reminds me of flicker modes on the c64 (IFLI and the like. take two FLI widepixel pics, hardware hack one of the two one half-pixel to the right, flicker between the two as fast as the poor c64 can handle, get more colors and simulated single-pixels almost)
I will try some things with this in black and white to see what can be done. Inspiring.
-
I remember when you tried something like that before, Adam. This seems to have worked out better, if I recall correctly. Is there anything different you did this time?

Not that I know of (don't really remember earlier tests). I did a GBA demo with a programmer friend several years back and that was amazing. Since the GBA runs at a steady 60fps (unlike glitchy web gifs) it didn't appear to flicker at all - it just looked like a flat grey. Coincidentally, my lead programmer on the Flash GBA game used this technique all over the place - flash's blur, and all shadows in the game are pure black or red, flickered on and off at 60fps. That's why in the game it's this nice, smooth opacity but it looks like crap in screenshots online because they either capture pure black/red or none. :P

.. I think that's a bit of a extreme exaggeration of my features. My cheeks don't actually perk out THAT much, I just happen to be smiling in that particular picture. Here's a picture with just a flat expression, which is what I tried to do more or less in the av.
.. see not so much of a perk out there. XD ... and you sort of made me look 40 years old. XD

haha never meant to do that to you, so sorry for that :)
still think you look better in real then on the fadatar
apart from perhaps the cheeks I think the glasses/eyes and nose are more you in my edit, but hey who am I to judge a selfportrait :)

It's grammatically correct even, though a slightly weird way to put it. I'd personally say something along the lines of:
Dank u zeer... ik zal er een blik op werpen wanneer ik de kans krijg.

baccamans sentence could almost appear to be vlaams.

Well... here's my try. I'm still new to limited colors, aa and non-pillowshading but I think I did ok.
(http://nevermore.cc/pixels/fadatar.gif) (http://nevermore.cc/pixels/fadatarbig.gif)

Looks great! I would use the alternative shade instead of dithering though. It gives your face a grainyniess when you use dithering.

Holy crap! There's so many awesome portrait avatars! I'm lovin' them, people.
'Decided to give a go at it, so here we go...
I personally don't know if making it double the size would be good for me because it's already pretty big in file size as it is.
Is there a way to make the file size smaller? This has always been an issue for me when I would make large pixel animations.
-
That's an adorable avatar, Ryona.
-
Why, thank you, Helm. ^_^
Oh, and I've been wanting to tell you that your avatar is one of my favorites that I've seen. Love the sparkly effect :)
-
Thanks. As I was early in the fad my avatar has been outclassed by almost all others and I've considered updating it, but in the end I never do.
About animation size, I don't think anyone's gonna cry about ~181 klb.

Thanks, Helm! I very much appreciate the help. ^_^

LOL!! XD
AstroBoy was actually one of a few ideas I had. I wanted to go with something retro, and other ideas that came to mind was Speed Racer, Voltron, ThunderCats, and TMNT. hehe
-
haha, I would love to see a TMNT crawling from your back to your shoulder and then to see him poked away :P
-
That is such an awesome idea that I may very well have to do that one day!

I love your eyes, they are really nicely made. I think the normal expressions could be there a bit longer, since the astroboy appears to fast. Thats pretty much the only thing i dislike, really nice job :y:

I have to agree... really nice Ryona... I get a feeling you're do somethign creative for a living...? smells of proffesional to me?

baccaman - can you post the other version of your avatar again - with the ambient lighting, i thought it looked super. perhaps animate it so it changes between different lightings ?
-
Thank you, guys. ^_^
I'm really going to need to get me a more advanced animated GIF maker one of these days. heh
And you're about right, Baccaman. I'm a freelancer of sorts. I'm honored that you think I'm at a proffesional level. Coming from you, that's a great compliment! :)
Oops. Forgot about posting this...
Just wanted to show this for fun.

sorry feron - i'm not quite following you... which avatar? my Self Portrait or my big fat chap with the beard and goggles?
-
Well, as said, this is just lovely :)
Perhaps the last frame could have less square irises... but still eyes are a gem to look at!
The only thing I really have a issue with is the background... maybe too many hues... is it still temporary perhaps? I noticed you did not do any AA against it...
Anyway, hard to notice given the cuteness of the rest ;)

i swear i saw an alternate version of your 'fad-avatar' with ambient lighting down the right hand side. If this piece never existed - never mind.... but if it did i would love to see it again.

You prolly mean this one.

ah... yeah... that one... (I was playing hard to get) ;)

I thought I should have a proper FAD avatar as well... what a pity I'm no pixeller!
My only hope to manage to create something vaguely resembling myself was taking a real picture and editing it. So, I took one of the few I had at hand, chose a limited number of colors, scaled down (both size and colors) my face (the one at the top) and then started pixelling... it took a lot of time (of course, I'm slow ;)), and eventually managed to get something acceptable (face at the bottom).
However, it looked way to realistic, whereas I wanted something cartoonish like most of your avatars... so, I spent again a lot of time trying lots of different palettes and pixel arrangements, but I'm afraid I failed miserably :(
(http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/685/oldavatarhj7.png)
Anyways, it's late now and I've already wasted too a long time... so, I guess I'm gonna have to be happy with this :-\

Yeah, I know what you mean about the irises. I'll try to fix that.
And yeah, I personally think the background is too bland, so I plan on changing it soon.
Anyway, you did a great job with your avatar. No sense beating yourself up over little things. It looks really good to me.
Y'know, for someone who claims to be no pixeller, you sure are good!
Oh, and your avatars kick ass, Baccaman! I totally love the expressions and toning.
This one in particular is awesome. (http://pete.ptoing.net/me2.png)
It almost has a "TwoFace" look to it.
-
Yeah, I know what you mean about the irises. I'll try to fix that.

Oh... well... probably it did not turn out to be a complete disaster only because I feel comfortable with tiny stuff (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=2476.0)...
But, hey, thanks for the encouragement! You just convinced me to try to improve it* and remove the line below it.
*edited now... it looks a bit more like me... but there is still job to do :-\
saimo
-
is there a cetain template, pallette or style hav to follow to make one? ???
-
Not that I know of. Just make a self-portrait, and make sure it's 64x64x2 (128x128 with double the pixel size).
-
yay yay, new background Ryona! Really nice, suits Astroboy :P
-
Thankies! ^_^
I like this one much better too.

A new fadatar right here :0
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/jadmadeyes/fadava2.png)
And no, my hair is not monochrome orange but YES I've got some new superstylin' glasses :D
Looks more like me too :0
Also looks like a colour-reduced photo :\ Don't know how I got that effect, really, but I didn't want any outlines. Heh.
I don't look that good in real life, I reckon, but damnit, I wanted my PHOTO POSE WINK WINK look. :] And I wanted to show off my DASHING GAY glasses that I love. :]
CnC means Command and Conquer! Conquer it!
EDIT: Updated just like that. No more shading on the hair, I just can't manage it at the moment and I want an avatar that I like :\
-
Dude shade the hair xD.. Anyway its looking good, its about time i should edit mine to a bit.. so it looks a bit more unique :P
-
have you no ears?
-
Another sucky animation.. Dunno what i was doing just did something..
-
have you no ears?
No.
D:
Actually, I do, but my hair obscures them. Thinking that, I didn't add ears and instead forgot about my hair length.
I'll go add longer hair, back in a minute.
SoZo> I'll try ;\
EDIT: Updated. Check it out, it's the same post as before.
-
Ears would still show, definately.
-
I know it seems so but Photo Reference That I Took To Determine Ear-Showage (Multiple Pictures) say no :<
But yeah, I'll probably make so that the earlobes are showing and the top is obscured by the hair, just for sense-making. If you think it looks weird, there's a fair chance (risk) more people do :\
Revamping. Later.
-
I think the flat shading of the hair makes it look like the hair is only longer behind the ears. (Thus the ears should be showing) The glasses just add to the effect.
Or maybe I am just rambling.
-
Is it ok if I use someone elses palette.
Im not to good at colors.
I also would be happy if someone crits the lineart.

Too bad it stopped looking like me when I sketched it.

I realise this is kinda getting old now. BUT. I needed to stretch my fingers, so i went and updated mine. Looks more like me now, i can't believe i was ever happy with my earlier version. Although this one is quite overdone with the style, but owels. Same amount of colours, i just switched the pointless tache one for a highlight.
It's a bit messy at x2. :noob:

Don't be so self depricating larwick... I wouldn't say it's overworked... the hair's lovely... and it captures a certain youthful (dare i say it) boyish charm... (no I'm not gay) - having said that... some weird ass shit going on around your neck buddy? I can see what you're trying to do but that curved hilght around the neck line (of the teeshirt) is shouting at me?
-
Cheers baccaman. :-*
I totally agree, it looks odd. I was taking in a bad aspect of the reference photo which shouldn't have been incorperated into this. Hopefully my edit solves the weirdness.

Btw, great stuff everyone. I love the design of yours Jad.

Jesus? :o
Lol!
Anyway, I'm guessing you're just a young boy, right, Scotteh? Your skills haven't matured yet. Don't be too hard on yourself. You'll get better as you grow older and continue to practice.
And I'm seeing alot of great avatars here. Yours is especially very impressive, Gliding. And yours is quite good too, Soup.
-
Thans ryona,
Its nice to hear that. I love the animation on yours BTW
-
Why, thank you, Gliding. ^_^
I noticed you said you're more handsome in person than your avatar. That blew me away because you look very attractive in your avatar.
And I really like the choice of colors and how smooth the image looks. Lovely artwork.
-
im only 12 and I get annoyed easily so it might be my short temper that stops me :(
-
And yours is quite good too, Soup.
Why thank you. I really enjoy the eye movements in yours.

I changed my fadatar.. should look better now.
from this.. (http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/5392/mouthwateringkm3.gif)
changed it because my hair is now a bit longer, after altering the hair I just thought why not re-do it all, I wasn't happy with the neck alignment of the first and I just wasn't a fan of the how it came out.

lip rings are ace, :y:

bah my last version hopefully unless people say it sucks :(

C+C please
A bit better i think. The neck is too big though. It's all very flat and shapeless, remember the ridge of your nose follows through to your brow. The highlight on the shirt is a bit too light aswel.
-
Thanks Larwick, I will try to improve that, do you think the eyes, mouth etc is ok?
Edit: added eyebrows and I followed the brim of the nose thru :) I dumped the highlights on the shirt altogether

Well, a lip ring. Labrets are usually farther down. :) I also have a nose ring but I didn't want to go as far to try and put that in there. I want to keep editing it, but I've got to step back from it for awhile before I can approach it again.
-
Very nice avatars everyone.
You may want to add a little shine on the lip ring, Aleiav.
-
kekeke, edited mine a bit. Fixed shading a bit and so on. The shirt as well.

Oh wow, Ryona! I liked your previous avatar much, but this one is just cute! :D

People say they like the piece, but I have mixed emotions about it.

Somehow, I am either blind, or I do not have an option to change my avatar (yet?). :mean:
I didn't kill this topic, did I? :blind:
