Well, here's a pic I made recently
(http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3985/rocklobster39finalvk8.gif)
and here's an excerpt from PJ regarding it's colors:
big brother: I was talking about this piece with my little bro, who also likes art. He suggested adding a color accent. I was thinking maybe make the inner ring in the eyes light blue or something. The contrast is enough to carry the focal piece alone, though. Maybe it's worth an experiment.
iLKke: @big brother: Yeh I actually pondered the breaking of monochrome look quite a bit. The pic is actually in 15 colors, cause I've kept one for an accent of sorts. I thought of perhaps using it as a skin tone for the little people but it turned out to be unnecessary. In the end I left it unused (akhem)
Also tried to make the impression that the robot and planet don't share the same colors, seeing how planet is all in darker colors where you can see the tinting, and the robot is so contrasted that it looks almost completely gray. I even tried changing one of the brighter grays into a reddish tone and got the effect of peeled paint, but then I thought maybe I'm just doing these things cause I got bored of looking at the pic while I was pixeling it and then I got all excited to submit it ASAP and left it this way. I think it has a bit of a vintage look like this, which goes nice with the clockwork bit.
I'll try a couple of things, including the blue eyes, but I only have one color to spare so it'll be tough :D
Perhaps I should start a topic over at Pixelation to see what can be done.
If anyone has any thoughts/ideas please do share. I know there are certain individuals here, at least one of them of Greek heritage, that have considerably more talent and/or experience with color than me. Edits are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

This is fun, just a few silly variations. The quality of these may be questioned.

That being said

Blue eyed robot, take one.

Not really that noticeable, huh? Couldn't get it to fit in otherwise.
Ptoing, that top left is not half bad, but I think you broke the Luma (if that's what it's called) in the darkest bits.
Perhaps the robot should be a bit colder and the planet a bit warmer.

Stop. It's finished.

Stop. It's finished.
Well, perhaps, but that's no reason not to play with it :D

Used the 16th color to help separate robot from planet.

Excellent shading is all I can say :y:
How long did it take you?
-
It has taken me years! :D
Really, this picture was about the only unfinished pixel laying around on my hard drive. It was only laid out a long time ago, with some details put in but not polished, so the most of the work has been done during the last week. Maybe four sitings of 3-4 hours each. That can be wildly inaccurate, cause I lose all sense of time when I draw.

Ok, so I've fixed the change in brightness and ergo atmosphere, and now I'm pretty satisfied with the result. That does not mean that someone else shouldn't play with it if he feels like it. The new version is not as smooth as the first one, cause hue shifts make individual indexes stand out more, but I think it is a much more exciting use of 16 colors.

I think the new planet colors are great, but I think the robot is too separated from the rest now. I think it needs some color from the planet in there somewhere to truly make it a part of the whole. Maybe some colors reflected in the metal, some colored lights or wires or something? Otherwise, good stuff. I love that ilkkeness it has. :D
-
Actually it shares ALL the colors with the planet, bar from ONE. I may try to make that one more similar, tho.
I will perhaps put the color back in some bits of robot, perhaps the bits of wiring that can be visible here and there.
-
I think the brightest shade on the planet is too contrasting, possible to tone it down a little? Also be nice if there was some reflection of color from the planet on the underside of the robot.

Alright!
The previous (pre-light-gray-blue robot) color ramps have a bit more interesting feeling to them. The planet, on the other hand, is much better in the newer one. So I went and mixed them.

ptoing: you'll get sued for that when some kid black out or go into convulsions while watching your LCD-laced stuff. :)

-had many seizures as a child-
... D< SO LUCKY I WENT PAST THAT PHASE. I WOULD SO SUE YOU HORRIBLEMUTHAGSDARWQREQ~
Lols, just kiddin'. c: Alright, back to srs bsns.
I personally thought the new robot looked better. >:

I was in err to tell you to stop experimenting. This lastest version is tits.
-
Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
Yes, it seems that the best solution is somewhere in between.
I'll also try tinting some bits of the robot more like the planet to see how it would look before I set on the final palette.
I'd like to keep the illusion of having different color ramps and yet having them sit well together.
-
I know this piece is already 'done', and it looks absolutely superb as is, but I think it would be great if the robot were to interact with the planet, or even the people on it.
Perhaps the robot could be connected to the planet, and sprouting robotic tentacles through certain places, and terrorizing/killing off the inhabitants of the planet, who may or may not be fighting back.
Just an idea.
Again, I think it's great, but there's potential for so much more.

The robot is whistling and tap-dancing. The people are presumably being entertained by it. Honest.
Anyway,

This is probably the final iteration. Couldn't really make up my mind between a more balanced and more colorful palette. This is somewhere in-between.
Also I repixelled some bits to fix errors that became apparent when I changed the original colors, plus I fixed the right eye, cause everyone thought it sucked.
I tried to tint parts of robot to be more brownish like the planet but I have only one index for that and it's not the ideal brightness for the job so it looked a bit crappy.
Probably should have picked the right colors early in the process to make the most of it. Getting thoroughly sick of this piece by now.
