Title: [WIP] Sid (ice age)
Post by: Fenne on January 27, 2008, 09:26:33 am
Hi all :)
I think this is my first post on pixelation (or isn't it?)
Whatever ^^
I'm working on Sid, that weird thing from Ice age.
And this is what I've got so far;

I used this reference;

What do you think? What do I've got to change?
C&C please :)

Does someone have any idea how I should to that ice thing?
I really can use your help!

EDIT; I forgot the eyebrows.. I'm gonna change it asap!

m8 that is so sexy  :D
very good, just made me want to try  :crazy:

About the ice : Just try looking at it and copy, thats what i would try !

Are you trying to copy it basically or just a vague refrence, because if you are copying it then the white fur comming down from his head to his belly is missing. If the latter then ignore this  :blind:

All of the noise is really killing this piece.
It looks like someone got happy with the spray tool :/

And why is there dithering on the claws? In the reference they're nice 'n' smooth.

The noise does convey fur pretty well, I don't think it's that bad. And the dithering on the claws makes the shading htere smoother, at 1x zoom.
When shading the icicle, you should be sure to take a mental note of the distorted hands and neck visible through it.

What should I do then to make it look like a furry texture?
With that, I don't mean that I used the spray tool, because I didn't.
And yes, It's like Sherman Gill said; for the shade (his claws)

EDIT;
Yay, I pixelled the icicle, I hope it's good.

Do you got any tips? Or things I must change?

EDIT 2;
Little edit

Carefully examine your reference. The fur is made of strands, not dots.
And I wasn't implying that you used the spray tool ;)

Looking good! But it would be more interesting if the icecicle distorted everything behind it.

@shiny You should give her an example of how you would do the fur. Right now it really doesn't look particularly like fur, in the reference picture it obviously does appear to have strands and clumps.

IMO I think you should go with a darker background. It might help to bring the icicle out more.

edit:
Try

#3237AF for the top color

#4951B4 for the middle color

#6E7CBD for the bottom color

It's very difficult to convey fuzzy, short hair in pixel art. One of the things that lends itself much better to traditional media then any digital media, really.
It is going to be difficult for ANY of us to make convincing fuzz.
As far as I see it (and my scope is limited, take note :D), he's got two choices:
1) He makes a noisy, dirty fur, like he has here
2) He makes a clean, edge based fuzz. This will read more clearly as fur, no doubt, but it's not going to lend itself to realistic shading at all.

@MadeyeMike; I don't like those colors that mutch, but I did change the background;

And about the fur.. I don't know, maybe I'm gonna change it a little bit...

And btw; I'm a she ^^

Sorry for not including an example, but here's one from Pixel Joint:
http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/17938.htm (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/17938.htm)

The trick to good pixel fur is to generalize it into clumps.
Trying to express each individual strand will lead to a mess.
