Since the last thread managed to get 666 posts, I thought we could move onto a new OT thread.
Well, you know how it works, keep it clean, don't spam etc etc.
-
FURST POWST!
-
WTF BANND!!! >:0
-
Damn. P"toe" took the first goofy post. I might as well follow up with a semi serious post:
Has any one seen the movie Babel yet? I've heard the plot resembles Crash, but is slightly different. Better or worse than Crash maybe? opinions, facts, noise, nonsense...whatever.
-
Ooo new thread.
No I haven't seen Babel, but I want to. I quite enjoyed Crash despite all the hype. Current List of Movies I need to rent: Babel, The Departed, The Prestige, Blood Diamond. Where AM I on movies lately geez. ???
Anyone heard anything about Grindhouse? It looks/sounds pretty interesting... they are gonna run it as two movies with fake previews in between.
-
Hey Boob, just curious but where does this "Toe" thing come from?
-
I think it is just a goofy way of calling you.
-
The Departed was amazing. I just wanted to scream "BOOM HEADSHOT" a million times while watching it.
Grindhouse is going to be awesome.
-
I'm impressed that you caught the old OT thread at 666 posts. Good one, Panda.
-
Hey Boob, your avatar looks a lot like the last boss on Giga Wing. Intentional, or no?
-
Babel was an excellent film, in my opinion.
-
Giga Wing
Mentioning that abomination might earn you a ban! Man, I HATE that game.
-
Mentioning that abomination might earn you a ban! Man, I HATE that game.
Shield delay, the fact that it isn't made by Cave, or other? :hehe:
-
@Ptoing: Panda pretty much nailed it. I'm goofy be nature, and have a hard time remembering names. Also, I never really knew how to say your name. So from now on, I'm going to refer to you as either, "The Toe" or P"toe"...just fuxin' around, ya' know...
@ Mccow28: nah, I just tried to base it off those Aztec dials/calendars(they could be Mayan also...) by memory...then again, I am sloppy, and have never played this "Giga Wing." So yeah, unintentional.
-
Shield delay gets used to. There's other companies but Cave that make good shooters. Gigawing's problem is pretty shitty design of levels and enemy patterns, I think. Well, more 'uninteresting' than shit. Requires memorization without much twitch-reflex payoff (if you learn where to shield and when, you don't need to dodge much even) and sadly, suffers from extremely ugh graphic design by Capcom. One of their low points. Generic anime pilots with STUPID semi-plot... bad pixel art... prerendered 3d with jaggies... a fucking EMBOSS filter on the title screen... oh well
Mars Matrix also annoys.
-
Fair enough. :B Any shmups you'd recommend, besides the obvious few? I myself am trying to make one and have to do a little 'research'.
-
Grindhouse is going to be awesome.
Grindhouse looks ridiculous. I'm still going to see it, just saying that it looks a bit... stupid.
-
Any cave game, any Raizing game, Gunlock those are the ones I can thoroughly recommend.
About the graphics in GW, it's even worse in GW2, each aspect looks like it was handled by another artist who had NO clue what the others were doing. Also it has drawn anime portraits in the cutscenes and they have, now hold onto your chairs, DIFFERENCE CLOUDS layered on top of them. When I saw this I seriously had to laugh.
-
Gunlock is my favourite. Hm.. some early Toaplan stuff is worth the interest if you can deal with sometimes nice design but bad execution. I like Rapid Hero. You could do worse than play the Vasara series, as well as Cyvern.
-
Yeh, Vasara is decent. And truth about some Toaplan stuff. I like the Truxtons and Dogyuun too. Too bad Batsugun is fucked on mame *strokes his Saturn version*
-
Thanks guys. :) Got about 15 games that I have to go play now.
-
Grindhouse looks ridiculous. I'm still going to see it, just saying that it looks a bit... stupid.
Oh c'mon... a half naked girl with a gun for a leg? How is that ridiculous? :)
Yeah but I love both directors so I will be seeing it... despite the propsed ridiculousness
-
The Departed was amazing. I just wanted to scream "BOOM HEADSHOT" a million times while watching it.
Grindhouse is going to be awesome.
Infernal Affairs was better. ::)
-
PING!
-
I think it's meant to look "Stupid".
I mean the films names are Planet Terror and Death Proof.
C'mon now.
-
I just saw Babel last night. It was so full of misery. I actually cried during the parts towards the end. I seriously haven't done that in awhile. Good movie, yes, but too many bad decisions being made in one film. It's worse than reality, for me at least. :-I
I would think it "pays hommage" (if that's the right phrace to use) to all the below B horror and action movies that have been released in decades past especially the 60s or 70s. *shrug Just my opinon...
-
I have the biggest urge to start up a new game of Terrangima... But then I know I will never get anything accomplished this weekend. :-\
-
Anybody out there ever tried writing a brew game, particularly with OpenGL ES? We're about to start a new project and any words of wisdom before I dive in in a week or so would be greatly appreciated...
EDIT - Also I showed this to Ptoing earlier, but try doing a google images search on Kid Icarus (http://images.google.com/images?client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hl=en&q=kid+icarus&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2) - check out result #2! ... I don't get it. What's the significance?
-
Kenneth is the significance!
-
Hey guys, just hooked up my DS WiFi today, but unfortunatly the only WiFi game I own is Animal Crossing. :noob: Anybody have it? My friend code is 5069-0140-8456 if you want to exchange... Friend codes are a pain in the butt. >:(
-
If you get Mario Kart (which every DS owner should :P) let me know, i'm always up for some Wi Fi MK.
-
Kenneth is the significance!
The second image in that link has nothing to do with Kenneth, at least, for me... It's a picture of the Kid Icarus box art for the gameboy. *shrug* am i missing something?
-
pretty sure kenneth made the gba mockup and the NES render.
it would be such a pain to link the images, non?
-

This is the second image i see under google image search for Kid Icarus.

I know the feeling. That game is awesome.

So tru'!
-
I tried terranigma once, i got to the second tower which was like 1 room and there was no way to advance it in.
awesome game.
-

awesome game.
It's funny how many people assume that the entire game is based on the 5 towers (not assuming that you think that Zolthorg) considering that it's essentially only a very tiny part of the opening of the game and can be easilly beaten in under half an hour.
-Fry
-
Wow, Zolthorg, you seriously missed out on a great game then, the five towers, as Fry said, are only the prologue more or less. It seriously, and literally, develops into a great gaming experience as the game progresses.
-
Bloody Mary gets quite irritating at times though! haha.
-
Boston Symphony Hall is amazing.

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070303.html <--- Pretty neat.
This website is probably one of my favorites. I guess it's the cosmos freak in me. ::)

Honestly, I suck with Photoshop. It's slowly pissing me off. I'm trying to get used to it, but it becomes so damn frustrating trying to get around it's "wonderful, new features." For some reason, I can't save a file for web viewing. If I try to make a photoshop file into a gif, or png file, it freezes. I have to use task manager to destroy that mother. I'm trying to upload a wip of a photoshop image on the off topic npa thread, so I can grab some handy-dandy advice, and get some of the small issues out of the way. The only way I can do so, is if I copy the image, and paste it on to mspaint( masochistic, maybe, but I still love the old gal...). This brings us to problem numero dos: I can't seem to merge the layers, and copy the whole thing onto paint. It only pastes the layer that was active in the file. If I go back into the photoshop file, and paste the copied image unto the desired background, it creates a whole new layer simultaneously with the image. Anger rouses me about, in an utmost flabbergasted fashion....I hate it.
Then again, I did download the pirated version from my bros cpu. But it never acted this way before with the saving and freezing. Any suggestions, or am I not being specific enough? Any one else experience the same issue?
-
Reinstall photoshop.

I got to the part where the guy kills the chicken and the boy just looks shocked. Then I thought "This is way too fucking sad already." Maybe I'll try finishing it. It's really slow to start off with which was bad because at the time I was trying to get time to go by faster.
-
I thought Babel was boring. Saw Blood Diamond and thought that was really good.
-
I saw Blood Diamond tonight and really liked it. Powerful film.
-
My boyfriend didn't allow me to watch Blood Diamond and made us watch a different movie ^^;;;;;
Of course now, I must go see it by myself...
-
Ugh.. I just caught a really bad cold. I had so much I wanted to get accomplished this week too. :'(
Anything I work on art-wise just seems half assed right now cause I don't have the energy to do a proper job.

Take tips off of this peice.
in all seriousness though, if there is anything to remember about a brew game, it's to balance time with atmosphere with capability.
get work done, but dont be a slavedriver, particularly of yourself. if you and your coworkers arent getting payed, then you have to make it relaxed. if you want a product, you have to work for it. lead by example; do your own parts (programming, I gather) and everyone else (music, graphics, writing, etc) will follow because nobody wants to be the unproductive part of the team. Don't plan beyond your means, this will lead to a frustrating grind that wont produce results. OpenGL ES has very few restrictions, but make sure that you know them! Also know your own restictions. Dont plan enough work for 12 years, you wont get it done fast enough to be worth it.
-

strg+e merges layers, strg+shift+c copys an image merged (works only if the selected layer is visible). maybe this helps..

Hahhaha I love that sprite, that will never get old...
Yeah I've actually made whole games before, I'm not too worried about the actual workflow, more the nitty gritty. I've done massive amounts of C++ and OpenGL programming, including game engines, 3d modelers, utilities, et, and I'm pretty decent with events, I did a couple years as a windows developer. I'm more interested in the nasty surprises that Brew and OGL ES will undoubtedly have for me :) I officially start digging into it second week of april, going to try and get the core graphics working in 4 or 5 days. If there are any specific problems/catch22s that you hit I would love to hear about them!
-
Hey, congrats on the promotion, Adam. Also, nice job on the website, though the art could be easier to navigate and the writing isn't showing up. I'll assume it's still in progress, but you have the link in your sig, so people will be complaining about it :P
-
yeah writing & tunes are just plain empty still, and i'm working on making a previous and next button for the bubble, my parents couldn't even FIND the navigation :P
-
Ah, okay. You might want an "under construction" message to pop up on writing and music, since 404 not found pages imply broken-ness rather than under-construction-ness. Previous and next would probably help quite a bit in the art section, as well as the pug pics. Speaking of the pug pics, those are quite cute.
-
I like how the boxes on the website are set up... you don't need a prev or next button imo if you are intelligent enough to navigate the little pixel boxes. :)

steady enough hand != intelligence.
(:P)
-
Assuming pixel artists already have steady hands...
-
I have crack fingers. They...aren't normal. But they do the job. By the by, I'm going absolutely no where with my guitar. Everyday I come home from work, I pick it up and play(or try to play it) or I just draw. I've been at it since Dec. and have noticed little improvement. I believe now, that I am no musician, and that the arts shall be primarily left to my hands...God help me if I go blind...
I'm also considering moving out on my own, instead of living with my brother, helping to pay rent and all that non-sense. Don't know what's going to happen with me, or where I'll end up. I hope I can finally decide on a college major and go back for craps sakes. Still though, I'm enjoying the break while I have the chance.
I also haven't learned any spanish. Which is sad, seeing as how I'm Mexican. I feel ashamed to be a coconut, sometimes(white on the inside, brown on the outside....) Someday, I shall conquer this language...someday
Man, I love off-topicness....
-
God help me if I go blind...
Dude, I was thinking about what I'd do if I went blind the other day...
I'd probably live the rest of my life in a deep, deep depression.
I mean seriously, all of my talent resides in my eyes.
But wait, I'm a writer, too. I could just learn braille or something.
So I guess it wouldn't be all bad.
...
Yes, yes it would be all bad. Gone would be the beauty of sunrises and sunsets, and the endorphine rush of jogging along rugged mountain trails and their accompanying vistas, and I would never learn to paint. At least nothing realistic. Maybe some crazy abstract nothingnesses. But I hate that kind of art, so I guess that'd make me a hypocrate.
I could always resort to blind-fu and become a superhero. (Daredevil.)
...yeah, so pretty much life would suck. Ass.
I pray I never go blind.
Or deaf.
Or mute.
Or an amputee.
Dude, not my arms. Never my arms. Then I wouldn't be able to draw or write. Someone kill me if I become a blind amputee.
Y' know, I've never done a collab. At least not a non-communal one. C'mon, someone, one-on-one time.
Collab, anyone?
-
I was actually thinking about going blind recently too... my apartment neighbor is going blind... he will be completely blind by the time he's 30. It made me sad... I really like uhm... seeing things... and doing art... and writing! Do you think it's better to be born blind and never know what you missed out on? Or lose your sight mid life and worry that you forgot what all the things that are important to you look like?
Uhm on a lighter note...
I've done a few collabs... it's all the rage in the dolling community ;) I like em! So you might be able to convince me...
I can't play the guitar because my hands are too small... and uncoordinated... I am horribly uncoordinated. I was a disappointment to my basketball coach dad XD I'm the "artsy one"
Also I got a tattoo... for anyone who cares... XD ---> Oh Yeah It's Hot! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/abzdragon/Random%20Pics/DSC02384sm.jpg)
-
I'm up for a collab!
...
Can't think of anything else to say, besides being blind would suck. So would being deaf. So would losing any sense. Taste less than others, I think, but...
-
Also I got a tattoo... for anyone who cares... XD ---> Oh Yeah It's Hot! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/abzdragon/Random%20Pics/DSC02384sm.jpg)
You poor thing. Someone thinks your less than the number 3... :P
-
Number 1 baybee.
(... it has more significance than that of course >_> heh)
-
XD I love your tattoo. It's simple, but cute.
Here's what I'd like on my back:
She is Tomoe Gozen one of the famous onna bugei sha (not female samurai). I'm no warrior but I'd like to be stronger and all that mumbo jumbo. Yeah!
-
I'd never get a tattoo.
Once you turn old they look lame. Not only faded but weirdly shaped since the skin gets wrinkly.
-
Same here. Don't think I'm a tattoo type-o-guy. Plus, I'd only get one if it truly meant something to me. Not some "cool looking tribal design."
-
Haha thanks Khorin. I wanted something small and meaningful :)
I love that picture btw... large backpieces are the sex. Oh and I did research on wrinkling where I got my tattoo before I got it by observing my mom and grandma's feet! Haha!
I'll probably end up getting something else on my lower back or </3 on my other foot.
But it isn't for everyone... :D
-
I was bored, and began looking at people's sigs. I must say, Fry's is currently at the top of my list, for best sig quotes:
"I try to do pixel art like porcupines fornicate... very carefully."
That's effing gold, in my book... :y:
-
I like Robalan's because I'm a fan of irony.
-
Thanks B.O.B. ;D
About the tattoo comments... I have a couple and the way that I look at it is: I don't expect to look great when I get really old anyhow. If my ugly old wrinkled flab is a bit more colourful and decorated than someone else's, i'm fine with that. I don't expect I'll be looking very good at the beach anyhow.
-Fry
-
Well, some tattoos do look neat, but it is more of a temporary thing. I wouldn't want to be stuck with a picture forever.
Not to mention that I would have no idea what to get.
Someone's name? uhm... I think they'd rather get a present worth the tattoo's price.
(Which reminds me that a friend of mine got a tattoo of HIS OWN name, and looks like those "Hi I'm____" cards in a retarded way, heh)
And I don't have any significant symbol nor picture that I would consider putting on me.
So yeah, but I guess it is an each to his own kinda thing.
Anyway, the other day I got linked to this anagram maker (http://wordsmith.org/anagram/), and well I decided to put my name, and some of the funny results I got were:

Then when I add my full name, it gets mad long;

MANLY TERM PER QUILL
LAMP QUELL MERRY TIN
QUALM RELENT PRIMLY
MARL PREQUEL LINT MY
All of the other ones have like, quell or quill in them. Which doesn't make a good sentence.
I like the manly ones though.

Hahaha, we have one in the office at GLU. I am sure as hell not buying one of these things in quite some time. :-X
-
That seems like the most fun you could have with a PS3 at the moment. :P
-Fry
-
Check out the PS3's massive launch (http://www.johng.co.uk/2007/03/22/huge-turn-out-for-ps3-launch-in-birmingham/) in Birmingham. Oh dear.
-
The PS3's failure so far is good for me, as I have declared vendetta on Sony :D.
-
Regarding the PS3's failure, this (http://nexgenwars.com/) says it quite nicely. Not only is it losing, most people have no hope of it making a rebound.
-
Wow, I wonder if the PS3 is following in the footsteps of the Sega Dreamcast; Great console, but bad release date, due to games and publishers not meeting eye to eye with each other. I guess people aren't seeing any great games that PS3 has to offer, other than MGS carnations, GTA(puke) and others. I honestly haven't seen anything groundbreaking to be released on that platform yet. I'm sure Sony will lose a bundle if this thing goes down the drain...
-
I have declared vendetta on Sony :D.
Yes.

It makes me so sad...

I wouldn't invest too much in nexgenwars, although I haven't checked in a long time, their stats rarely added up and most people came to the conclusion they were just completely made up
back on the PS3, I don't think it'd surprise many to hear I don't like sony at all, I don't like their products, ethics or their fanbase.
its a shame, because I would really love for sony to make games, the only games I really liked on the ps2 were made by them.
I wouldn't get the ps3 if the second coming of jesus was a ps3 exclusive
-
I have the wii and xblox360 but i still play ps2 the most, so go figure. I think ps2 has the best games lineup and a lot to choose from for the next 10 or so years.
If i'm ever going to get the ps3, it's when they release the next Gran Turismo. I had plans to get the ps3 on launch but seems like my favorite series are going for xbox360, like Devil May Cry, Resident Evil and Ace combat.
I still hope the ps3 doesn't bomb tho. I like all the consoles just as much, but my wallet doesn't like the ps3.
It makes me so sad...
http://forum.deviantart.com/jobs/offers/816938/
That guy is legendary. I found his games and they were interesting to say the least. RPGmakerXP stuff.
-
GTA(puke)
I second that D:
But then again I am a Nintendowhore. I only support Nintendo.
I saw in game shots of the new Gran Turismo... and honestly... it looks pretty badass.
I never got a 360 bc the day it came out my ex got one and it almost immediately destroyed Halo 1 and Perfect Dark. Microsoft actually sent him a new one after we broke up AND Wal Mart exchanged it so he ended up with 2 360s and sold one. Bastard. But I just never bought one after all that... Go Wii!
It makes me so sad...
http://forum.deviantart.com/jobs/offers/816938/
Yeah I saw him on dA. He's spamming for people. I'd like the see the games XD
-
*refrains from shouting at him in public and reports the topic*
-
Heh, yeah...
I still kind of feel bad though, seeing as how I don't like to judge people whom I've never met. Despite his flaws here, or elsewhere, I'll also refrain from making fun of him.
Oh snapjizzle, boredom has just led to this amazing thought: Has anyone here ever thought what if some of the pixel artists around the web were celebrities, who would they be? I wonder what everybody else would think. I guess I'd be the "Paris Hilton" of the bunch. C list star, with absolutely no talent...Hah! Thoughts, anyone?
-
But then again I am a Nintendowhore. I only support Nintendo.
why so closed minded?, there are plenty of amazing games that aren't nintendo, stop being a fan-boy/girl and start supporting good games - not just gaytendo.
TBH the Wii was teh most over-expected thing ever. At christmas time it was all sold out - it hasnt been mentioned since. The wii takes too much effort to play - yeah its a neat party toy, but the 360 is just so much better, especially its online user-base - halo 3 is gonna have at least 2 million people playing online.
-
halo 3 is gonna have at least 2 million people playing online.
More than half of which are probably stupid annoying 15 year olds :P
But yeh, I agree about supporting games not systems bit.
-

Yes. I do think the 360 is the best console around right now - but that doesnt mean that i ONLY like 360 games. There are some awesome ps2 games, MGS2, GTA (liberty city/vice city), guitar hero 2 etc... I also think the GC had a couple of good games.
-
The gamecube has some very good games. Mister Driller - Drill Land alone is worth it (if you have a Jap one - moding wont work for that game :P)

Yet it's still nearly impossible to find one..
I agree that the console was probably a little bit overhyped considering that amount of good titles could be listed on a single hand. However dismissing it simply as a "party toy" is a bit far. If you can't find the energy to flick your wrist ever so slightly you should perhaps find a gym. In many cases it's less effort than pushing buttons.
I do enjoy the 360 as well, but it's more less the same formula as any last gen console. Which is by no means a bad thing.
-Fry
-
You probably can play japanese games by using those swapdiscs. Haven't tried myself, but a friend of mine is playing the japanese custom robo on an european gamecube.
Recently i've been playing God hand and Ace Combat 0 on ps2.... God hand is HARD and MANLY.
The new GTA looks pretty nice btw... tho i think i haven't really finished any of the previous ones.
Not really excited about the new consoles at the moment. I played through zelda on the wii, after which it's been collecting dust. Then played Gow on 360, which took like one night to finish, after which that console has been collecting dust as well.
Waiting for the summer when there's a barrage of new games coming out.
-

Excercise should be saved for the gym not for the living room. As for my personal fitness - i am in great health.
I'm off skiing for 8 days tomorow - so its goodbye from me Pixelation!!
-
You mean to tell me that when you get into a game - I mean, reaally get into it - you don't move the controller around a bit unconsciously in an attempt to make your character more responsive. I know I do (Star Fox 64[!]). Wii just brings that motion from subconsciousness to consciousness. I don't have a Wii, or 360, and as far as I care, I will never have a ps3. But 360, being around for the longest of course has the biggest, baddest library so far (of the "next gen," that is), but the Wii and ps3 are still just buds. (Not buddies. The flower kind). I believe that, once both systems pick up, the Wii will quickly outdistance the ps3 in fun factor as well as how many people have them as well as profits made.
Oh, yeah, I'm a Nintendo fanboy, too (though I still want a 360) and so far I haven't regretted it.
[/rant]
-
Exactly Xion,
You barely have to move your wrist in order to play a game with the Wii. If you are swinging it like a baseball bat, it's your fault you are tired and you're gonna break your TV. :D There's no reason playing a Wii should take any more energy than playing any other console.
What most people seem to be ignoring is the fact that most of the Wii games currently released are just "party toy" type games... Wario Ware, Wii Sports, etc. It's a good way to demonstrate the system capabilities early into it's launch... but that doesn't necessarily make it exclusive for just that. Take a look at some of the previews of what is coming out for the Wii, there is plenty to look forward to in all genres. And we must not forget to mention the virtual console. :)
Take a look at the Nintendo DS.. it too was passed off as a gimmick, and it took over a year before it got it's footing and started being taken seriously... I was one of the few who thought it was gimmicky at first, but now it is without a doubt my favourite handheld of all time (obviously many others agree considering it's sales). Anyone who passes the DS off as a gimmick obviously hasn't played one enough, and is really missing out.

-
One thing i like about the wii controller is that you don't have to hold your hands close together like with other controllers. Increases the amount of possible very relaxed gaming stances.
-
I think Nintendo is terribly underrated. I am not a "fangirl/boy whatever" I have a PS2 and PS1 and Xbox... but I ENJOY playing the Wii. I think it's innovative, creative and fun! I have Enjoyed more Nintendo games than any other system! So that's a personal preference, it's not that I haven't branched out. Someone posted a link earlier comparing all three systems and the popular vote had the Wii winning at like 53%. That's over half for one system. It's just more fun imo!
-
Yes. I do think the 360 is the best console around right now - but that doesnt mean that i ONLY like 360 games. There are some awesome ps2 games, MGS2, GTA (liberty city/vice city), guitar hero 2 etc... I also think the GC had a couple of good games.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Metroid Prime
Wind Waker
Resident Evil 4*
Ikaruga (unless you have a Japanese Dreamcast [used to say Saturn, woops :P ])
Viewtiful Joe*
Eternal Darkness
*Yes it was ported, but it took em like a year
I'd say it had more than a "couple" good games ;) If you had a gamecube laying around then it was a really great system to get ports for, because they usually looked much better than their PS2 counterparts, were cheaper, and you could play them with good wireless controllers; my copies of Sands of Time and Alien Hominid are both on the gamecube, for example. Now, while I am a Nintendo fanboy, I love that the PS2's strongest years by far were 2005 and 2006; if you judge that system by those 2 years alone it is one of the finest systems ever released by anyone ever:
ICO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [this list is for 2005-2006 only, ptoing!!]
Shadow of the Colossus
God of War
Gradius V
Guitar Hero
Katamari Damacy
We Love Katamari
GTA: San Andreas
FFXII
Okami
Psychonauts
etc etc
I had to quite literally unpack my ps2 from its box in the closet and hook it back up, and eventually went so far as to replace it with the slim model, just to keep up with the amazing games that were coming out left and right. It was kind of nice in a way - just as the gamecube's streak of amazing exclusives and gorgeous ports was cooling, the PS2 brought some amazing software to the table. If you love games, discarding an entire system outright without even finding out what it has to offer is crazy!
-
I think Nintendo is terribly underrated.
wh... seriously? Nintendo's been drooled over since it's release. Far far far far from underrated.
Have you ever even HEARD of the Dreamcast? :P (yeah, i know, it's 'trendy' to like the Dreamcast, bite me.)
-
a question for those here that have or have played okami, how does it stack up against twilight princess?
I was hoping for okami to get ported to the wii, but I think I'll just buy a ps2 for it..
-
a question for those here that have or have played okami, how does it stack up against twilight princess?
I think it's pretty damn good, haven't played Twilight Princess for more than 10 minutes though. It's a lot like Zelda games, except, you know, more creative.
I want a Gamecube. Might just have to get a Wii for it's backwards-compatibility. I really want to play Ikaruga and Eternal Darkness. Plus Smash Bros. is pretty much the best 4 person multiplayer that I've played.
PS2 is so damn good, I keep returning to Katamari Damacy, Guitar Hero, and Shadow of the Colossus. Plus I can replay my great PS1 games, like Metal Gear Solid, FFT, and, uh, Shadowman. :P Haven't tried Ico though, I keep looking out for it but it's never at any store. :/ I also have 2 PS1's, how's that for redundant. :-\ One's been peed on one too many times, though.
I have a DS. I have a few good games for it. Sonic Rush and Castlevania and New Super Mario Bros. are the standouts. I do think the DS is a bit gimmicky. The best games on it (IMO, obviously) have nothing to do with the stylus and hardly use the double screens.
God hand is HARD and MANLY.
Yes, very much so. I have to play it again, I only remember repeatedly dying on the first level. :durr:
-
Hm, I think Okami IS coming to the Wii or at least they are considering it. I have it for PS2 and I quite like it.
-
mccow, I would definitely recommend checking out Trauma Center, its a great little arcade game, and it uses the touch screen in a REALLY awesome way. I have heard the same things about Hotel Dusk but have not actually played it personally. Phoenix Wright is a little slow for some people, but the writing is top-notch, its an absolute blast to play. Also Advance Wars Dual Strike is quite good, and Megaman ZX was a breath of fresh air with some REALLY sweet artwork (though it does not use the dual screen or the stylus effectively at all). Tetris DS is surprisingly fun, especially the multiplayer, it has some good new modes (some former coworkers used to have tourneys actually), and for short breaks Metroid Pinball is pretty solid, though I was surprised by how few boards there were. Both Tetris and MP make liberal use of both screens, though not in a particularly inventive manner.
-
I have played Trauma Center, borrowed it from a friend. It seemed alright, but not something I'd buy unless it's quite cheap. Same thing with Tetris DS.
Oh crap, I forgot Meteos on my list. That game has good use of the touch screen. Best puzzler I've played in a long while.
I don't like Advanced Wars games much (or Fire Emblem for that matter :durr:), but Phoenix Wright seems up my alley. I'm just afraid that once I get it, I'll beat it really quickly and never play it again.
-
Hm, I think Okami IS coming to the Wii or at least they are considering it. I have it for PS2 and I quite like it.
I'd hope so, especially after capcoms 'exclusive' gcn games like viewtiful joe and re4

I remember giving advance wars a try when it came out for GBA, didn't really like it.
a month or so ago I got the DS version, surprised me how much I like it, really addictive.
and hotel dusk is great too, be warned it is around 70% dialog, but atleast its good dialog.
plus I would've preferred they used the 3d for the top down map since you use it to navigate far more often, and used nice detailed pictures for areas of interest, like they did with another code
-
I really enjoyed hotel dusk, very good writing. The way it's played is like the old deja vu games, but you hold the DS like a book which makes for an interesting play experience... It's perfect if you're on a bus.
I also enjoy the fact that you can play games like FF3 entirely with the stylus, I usually switch back and forth between buttons and stylus.. sometimes it's just easier to poke away at menu options.
Some other really good games which havn't been mentioned are Lunar Knights, Rocket Slime, Castlevania Portrait of Ruin, Yoshi's Island DS, Brain Age... Not to mention these upcoming titles Zelda :Phantom Hourglass, Stryder, Final Fantasy Tactics 3, FFX12 (RTS), Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, New Dragon Warrior title, Puzzle Quest, Secret of Mana Tactics.. etc, etc, etc... Great console if you are a fan of RPGS.

wh... seriously? Nintendo's been drooled over since it's release. Far far far far from underrated.
Have you ever even HEARD of the Dreamcast? :P (yeah, i know, it's 'trendy' to like the Dreamcast, bite me.)
I felt the GameCube was mocked as a gaming system... it was underappreciated by all the gamers I know... so I suppose just recently. I am pleased the Wii is so fun.
Yeah I have a rebuilt Dreamcast... go Crazy Taxi.
-
Being a fighting game freak, I had to have the Dreamcast. It was practically a fighting game console, due to the release of many games in that genre, during the Dreamcast's short reign. I still play it evey once in a while. Some Garou, or Marvel vs...I still find it fun. Tis a shame that the people running the company couldn't seem to grasp the concept of a good release date, WITH stapled games to keep it afloat during the battle of sales with other consoles. Oh wellz...
By the by, I don't even own a ps2, ps3, xbox, xbox360, or any nintendo console at the moment. I'm a sad little boy, with sad little dreams...
-
Rocket Slime is surprisingly fun, yeah. The new Final Fantasy Tactics seems cool. I just hope it's more like the PS1 version than the GBA one.
-
I prefer Okami over Twilight Princess, I found it somewhat less repetitive. Also, it's one of the few games I beat in the recent months. I've never played previous Zelda games much though, I'm not such a big fan of the series. I found the ending of Okami kind of disappointing though in way.
Currently I'm looking forward to Puzzle Quest for the DS to arrive, after I was hooked on the demo instantly. Great time-waster :D

Question:
Seeing as how some of the folks here are fairly used to the practice of Pixel art, I was wondering if you could give your opinions on this subject; For all newcomers to the form of pixel art, should dithering be a technique first learned, or should is it a more difficult concept to grasp than say, oh I don't know, flat/block shading? The same could be said for AAing. I've seen many beginners try their hand at pixel art, and sometimes I see things that don't look like they should have been tried first, but moreover, should have been approached in a different way. Obviously, this is something that all serious artists think of when viewing or critiquing some one else's art-ways to make it better, opinionated thoughts on what the artist should have done first, or should practice later on.
The main question here, is which forms of pixel technique, NOT traditional art, should be better saved for later. Do you consider dithering, AAing, Sel-Out(if you believe in it...) too advanced for rookies to comprehend? I would say Color theory, but that category honestly applies to most forms of art, whether it be digital or traditional. I ask these questions mainly because I've seen previous "newbs" art that seem to misuse or over abuse these techniques, as well as sometimes asking myself whether or not I abuse them also.
I hope this isn't too vague a question for those willing to share their thoughts. Again, I'm just interested on what others have to say about what their personal pathology over the matter is. Thoughts?
-
flat shading is a tecnique that one can grasp from having a hold on traditional art, it just deals with bringing out forms. i think that aa and dithering should be praticed with early and the artists will improve with these tecniques as they do more works.

So i'm looking at my calendar here, apparently it's April 2nd.
-
I feel kinda bad about using the name Fry considering there was already a Frychiko here (didn't realize that until after I registered)... I don't mean to create any confusion, however Fry is my actual last name and what I usually go by. I have used the alias Synial in most other communities for the past decade or so, but I didn't use it because I noticed there was a Syn here and wanted to avoid confusion. Oii...
There's no winning. :n:
Or perhaps i'm just overtired and probably nobody really cares considering it hasn't been mentioned. :P
-Fry
-
Hm, I think your styles are different enough to avoid confusion. I wasn't confused, at least. Heh, I kinda feel the same way because there is an artist named Darion here, though I haven't changed mine because to my knowledge nobody really has been confused yet.
But... Synial? Did I work with you very briefly on a project called Element? If not, screennames really are too common :mean:
-
Sharpm and Sharm are the only ones that ever mess with my head. Just seeing one of their names at a glance.
-
Darien - Yup, that would be me.
-Fry

Haha! I got's to know, though: Snake, did you really pull out an avatar, or is this the work of the admins and moderators?
Me? An avatar?
I'm planning to deal with that issue after the competition is over.

It was an April Fool's joke, but people wanted it so much, they're actually planning on making it a real product.
Looks awesome... :D

um yeah that is totally sweet - i hope they make a few different colors!

XD someone gave snake an avatar yesterday that was advertising viagra XD

@pixel-tie:
Sweet ;D But that black outline is quite nasty. Some AA would probably help...
Now we just need a tie that follows c64 mcol restrictions.

@ pixel tie:
Eww, haha, that would look just horrible. "GIMME ATTENTION I'M SO SPECIAL LOOK AT HOW DIFFERENT MY TIE IS!"
also, merging this into the OT-thread if you don't mind.

I wonder if it really would possible to swim that far, if you had a heated swim suit and some food supplies in a little bag.
-
I wonder if it really would possible to swim that far, if you had a heated swim suit and some food supplies in a little bag.
 to cross that in a month you would have to swim 5miles per hour, to keep that up is rather unlikely. Also what about sleep? I would say that it's pretty much humanly impossible.
-
Well, you could spread it over a manageable length of time. And the swim suit could have some sort of very compact oxygen supply, then you could just float around in your sleep. It would be like sleeping on a very comfortable GIANT water bed, each night :-*
-
*ahem* sharks....you can't exactly sleep in floating water when their are sharks around who might mistake you for a seal, or large fish. That or giant squid...and lochness...and underwater warriors of Atlantis who charge trespassers 300 Runes( thats $8,000, American) to pass the toll...Sea life isn't for land peddlers, no sir.
-
The swim suit could have a strong solar powered electric current running through the outer layer to shock away predators as soon as they touch you. Or you could swim inside a strong, yet light-weight cage for protection. ::)
-
How about using a ship. Really, either you swim or you stock up gadgets until they form a ship. durr :B
-
on the news a while ago, a new zealander got lost at sea.. I think he spent a few weeks floating in the ocean before they found him, he was burnt to a crisp, and something like all the blood had pooled at the back of his head so if he became verticle it would kill him.
it was a pretty crazy story, he said all he could do was when it rained to open his mouth as wide as possible
-
That's terrible. I guess I'll stick to boats then. Although... I could do with a bit of a tan...

Ok, so let's assume that you have some type of outter layer suit that electrifies predators, or you could have the lightweight cage thingy. But what about Giant Squids, that are known to devour ships. Hmm, did you think about that one, Mister? Or what about non-skeletal creatures that are not prone to shock. Or giant Jelly fish, that shock you with their tendrils? Or Posiedon...he touches little English boy's bottoms (so I've heard...).
And Takam, that's crazy. Was he just floating with his body, or was he on something? That's just amazing. Hope the guy is alright. I can't relate to him, though, seeing as how I can totally fly, and leap long distances and junk. Yeah, I'm amazing and junk.
On another note, my brother just told me that he's had re-occurring dreams 3 nights in a row. Each time, 2 men take him to an electrical chair. The first day, they took him to the chair, and told him he was brave for doing what he was doing. The second day, he dreamt the same thing, however, the 2 men mentioned that he died the first time he was taken to the chair. The third time, they also mentioned that it would be his 3rd time dying. Crazy stuff. Anyone else have reoccurring dreams?
-
I like dreams alot...
I had 2 reoccurring dreams in my younger days....
1. I was in school and the whole school was gathered outside the forest... everybody was waiting for something, just standing looking into the forest... there was new reporter there also....
suddenly a T-Rex ( I was a big fan of T-Rex when I was young) sprung out from the forest chasing everyone and eating them... the one surviving longest time was the winner... it was terrifying but really cool dream... like a game or so....
2. The second dream is a nightmare
Its party at home... my older brother birthday. I'm going down the stairs to see what he and his friends are doing. Walking in to the TV room where lots of small children are frozen together with their mums.. suddenly they start staring at me and the eyes are glowing a disgusting high saturated green slimy colour...
I get scared and run into my brothers room and they are also frozen in the middle of a huge Lego construction. They start staring with the glowing eyes..
I freaking out and run to the stairs notice that all with glowing eyes have evolved into clowns (scary clowns) I run up the stairs My mum see me and stretching out her hand to save me... the stair breaks down and she grabbing my hand but the clowns get a grip of my feets and I'm down in the basement again surrounded by scary clowns and they starts eating my flesh... I'm dead :blind:
I hated that dream so much... the clowns reoccurred alot in my dreams... they are my nemesis... scary clowns with glowing green slimy eyes...
I have been hunted by them in a car, street, in forrest etc.... scary like hell
Well, nowdays I dream alot too... Zombi dreams are fun... also like to analyze dreams.. if you study them you see parallels to what you have done or thinking of during the day.... really cool
don't know though what the clowns represent... my borther had a hand made clown mask in his room by that time... I think that one made me dream those dreams :/

If Finding Nemo has taught us anything, it's that all fish understand, but don't necessarily speak, the english language.
Thus:

Marlin couldn't read. I'm guessing it might be a kind of rare thing for fish to read. So maybe that wouldn't work. After all, sharks aren't known to be the brightest fish. Everyone knows that title belongs to the flounder.
Also, not sure if anyone else here's a fan of the Flight comics, but http://www.newsarama.com/Flight/v4Mar07/preview/Flightgallery.html.

oooo awesome i didn't know the previews were up already - i have the first 3 volumes here, and kazu's repaint of the vol 1 cover on my desktop right now :D i had the vol 4 cover up for a while too...reading them now!
EDIT - oh hell yes, zita, missile mouse and jellaby all in one volume!! this is a beautiful world we live in

yah B.O.B, he was just in his wetsuit floating on his back
-
Wow. That would suck pretty bad. I don't understand, however, how he could just manage to lay down for so long. I guess swimming so long got to him. I remember one time I was at my local swimming pool, and I decided to take a mini nap. So instead of stealing a friends floaty, I decided to let my body float on the surface of the water. It was about 2-3 minutes, before a I heard a rushing of water. Next thing I know, I turn my relaxed head around and see some new life guard rushing towards me, Baywatch style. Seriously, this guy was serious, and would have made David Hasslehoff proud. He came up to me grabbed me. I immediately stood up in the water and gave the guy a confused "wtf" look. The guy was like, " Are you ok?!?". To which I responded, " Uhmm, yeah." I stared at him for a second or two, until he realized there wasn't a problem. My friend laughed his ass off the whole time, though...good times.

I remember after a surgery, I laid on my back for 8 days.
I never thought sleeping could be so painful.

I'd just like to know, who else here has a uni-brow? I used to swear I'd never shave mine, but today I have. It feels so strange putting shaving foam on your eyebrows. But at least I now look less evil. :y:

Yar, I too am part of the Furry Caterpillar club. Though, mine isn't as prominent as some around. I've never shaved it though. I'm afraid I'll feel a little more empty inside if I do...

There are famous artists with a unibrow, so I don't think you really have to worry much. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frida_Kahlo)

Not even that. She's just so fugly. I don't know why she was proud of her looks. I mean, she had a moustache and a unibrow. That's like, more hair than most dudes have.

Not looking in my artbooks, Artemisia Gentileschi commes to mind. Italian painter who worked at a time when you wouldn't expect females to be excepted as artists. (1600s according to the net.) Given that my artschool was more or less exclusively run by women, about half a year was used to go through "female art history" so I've had my share of non-male painters.
I feel Frida is, or was mostly popular for being eccentric and making eccentric artwork. She was interesting, and got attention accordingly, much like Salvador Dali. That's not to say she didn't have great art, but being well known is not the same as being talented. Then again, I would rather have a teacher worshiping Frida than the people mine have. I's an odd feeling when your teacher goes through a praise-speech for the woman who destroyed her face through surgery and gained weight to photograph herself naked to demonstrate against female oppression. (brave, but not my type of hero)
In short, Frida's unibrow is lord.
-
She was interesting, and got attention accordingly, much like Salvador Dali.
Dali was a con man, but at least his technical skills as a painter were top-notch. Frida wasn't insincere as Dali, but her painting skill was mediocre at best in my opinion. I don't see much in common between the two. Most painters (/painters' lives) are 'interesting' regardless of how they twirl their mustaches/unibrows, really.
-
Their common aspect (imo) was that both their art and personality created publicity. Painters in general are perceived to be more "out there" than most, but few get that level of public attention. Even if I can't know for sure, I don't think Frida nor Salvador would be remembered to the same degree if they weren't as "extreme" in both areas. This could be said about a number of artists. Van Gogh for example.
-
Yeah I see what you say. I dunno however, my historical perception isn't keen enough to be able to gauge how well-known Frida's art, or her life are, as opposed to Dali who is still a super-star, after his death.

You do know that shaving makes it grow in thicker, right?
-
Urban legend alert Faktablad...
-
It won't grow back thicker as in... density, but the base of the follicle is thicker in diamater than the tip. When you shave it, it will be the same diamater at the top once it grows back out. If you have really coarse hair, it can be noticable. It won't grow back 'thicker' each time you shave it, just the first. (and even then, it's hardly much difference.)
-
even if it did grow back thicker, you just keep shaving it (http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3520/pervertkp4.gif)

Gil - sometimes people just arent sure what to say. theres nothing terribly wrong with your sprites, but there isnt much thats particularly interesting about them either. it happens..
Frida is hailed as being interesting and vaguely original, which nowadays is more important than being good. I hate Dali, but i can understand how people might like his work, whih is more masterfuly exectued than frida, but it pales in comparisson to many of the true masters. whos work doesn't? there's a reason the masters are the masters and people like Dali are just famous.
van gogh has several things going for him - hes insane, and therefor interesting, self-comitted, and therefor sad and again with the interesting, his style was markedly different and remains so from what most people do, and finally, his paintins are very very pretty. people who do pretty things do have an edge in terms of how they will be remembered popularly.
i have a unibrow. buy yourself some tweezers; it takes no time at all and it's much closer+neater than anything else.
without my notes, marie cassat and that pelozzi woman (or whatever her name was...something italian). It shouldnt be that hard, but it is.....
Also keep in mind that many female artist's pretended to be their husbands in order to paint and be sucessful.

Yeah, apparantly Adarias. Perhaps I need to make a blog, like you guys are doing with Partisan Tactics. Then again, who would read it... I miss my old forum where I had a group of people dedicated to giving opinions on my silly ideas...
My game has a similar class tree to yours btw. Still radically different, but some stuff is familiar. I'll post it when I have time...

I think you'd be surprised by how many people are interested in game dev blogs.
I read all the ones I know (very few) and ours receives much more visits than we expected, even tough my writing style is very poor.
You should give it a try, at least for a few weeks/months =)

it does suck, but my system doesn't have enough mem for the overhead of any of the really poorly coded and bulky managers that are made for windows.

I actually think (not 100% certain though) that Geoshell (http://www.geoshell.com), the shell replacement that I use takes up less resources than windows explorer (It uses about 3 MB of memory right now).
I have to say that I really like you're desk Stewlin. The background is very nice and subtle and you seem to "hate" those icons as much as I do.

I wanted to give an update on the Great BREW Experiment. We (we = my company = me and my buddy jim) decided that a good first in-house commercial project would be a BREW game, targeting the high-end 3D/EVDO phones, like verizon's VCAST handsets, Amp'd network's multimedia phone, and now we're thinking about this new Helio phone (through our friends at Requiem, hopefully they get that gig, cross your fingers!). It's been a really interesting project so far, I'm just taking a break from a marathon coding session so I thought I'd bang out my thoughts and ideas. If anyone has more experience with this stuff (I started the project monday morning) feel free to chip in with your thoughts/ideas.
EDIT - i should say that the main reason we're pursuing 3d is phone operators LOVE it. they want it in their pants right now. And we're basically an unknown company, so any edge we can get we will take! I'm not opposed to putting some eye candy in there for sales reasons as long as the base game is solid.
Ok. So the goal of this project is to create a game (hopefully even "games" plural) that uses the phone's limited input and 3D visuals in a way that really suits these new phones, i.e. has good framerates! I don't know if you guys have played many of these 3d mobile games, but they are very choppy and clunky compared to their "real" game console counterparts. They're certainly playable, and some of them look very nice, but the choppiness just drives me nuts, especially for games when reflexes really count.
Research and coding experiments over the last few days have led me to the following conclusions:
1 - These phones, while apparently very powerful, have very specific limitations that can guide your game development rather than hamper it. Specifically, the majority of them can only use fixed point arithmetic, and as such they use OpenGL ES 1.0, which has some fairly strict limitations of its own. None of these things are dead ends, but they do preclude certain types of games from being really high performance; specifically, third- and first-person shooter games in the traditional console/PC vein. Basically, anything that requires a VERY dynamic, player-controlled camera and arbitrary occlusion (meaning it has to figure out on the fly what crap to draw, and what to skip) is IMO a bad idea on these systems. That's not to say the camera can't move, but if it moves predictably then you have a LOT more control over exactly what ends up on your screen.
2 - Why is that? Well, OpenGL ES is heavily optimized for vertex arrays. Meaning, big lists of crap to draw all at once. If you have to monkey with these lists every single frame, you are wasting a lot of CPU time that could otherwise be used to get framerates ABOVE 10fps.
3 - So what does "predictable camera movement" mean? It means that you can make some friggin sweet games, you just have to plan a little more carefully. If you're going to make a 3d shooter, consider having a fixed perspective. It can vary from area to area, and it can shift and move within the area, but the important thing is to some extent you control what the camera sees and when. This will let you update your vertex arrays at discrete times, instead of every dang frame. Obvious candidates are overhead adventure/exploration games, racers, rail shooters, and shmups, but the limited input can really hamper the shooters and shmups unless you are careful to take that into account. Metal Slug has no place on cell phones, not until they get better key layouts and allow simultaneous key presses. Other genres can be easily adapted though - e.g. the camera style used in the original Silent Hill and Resident Evil games (or mayb emore accurately Dino Crisis) would work GREAT on a cell phone, whereas the camera from say Resident Evil 4 would be a very, very bad choice (from a programmer's standpoint anyways).
4 - Cheat like crazy on your AI, and choose game types that don't require massively intelligent enemies. These phones appear to have fairly reliable and accurate timers, so you can good feedback and interactions, you just don't want to sit in a big fat branching logic tree when you could be dumping an extra frame to the screen.
Ok that's all that's on my mind right now. If anybody has a BREW simulator set up already for 3D work let me know and I'll post a VERY rough demo of our game later this week!
-

So i've decided that it will be for the best if i ditch GameMaker and learn a real language before i go any further with the production of my current project. It will all be worth it in the end...
right? i hope i can actually commit myself to it, this time.
-
Learning a language takes no time at all, so yeah, do it.
I suggest learning C++/SDL, it's easy and powerful.
-
...Um...Exactly how much like...math does programming involve?
-
for a typical sidescroller, basic arithmetic will get you by. for decent physics or simple 3D, a working knowledge of trigonometry or at least a passing familiarity with it (combined with a willingness to relearn what you forgot since its been like 5 years since you last took math) would serve you well.
as far as languages go, that's not really a cut and dry question. C++ is not easy. It requires manual garbage collection, strict typing, object-oriented design, and can throw REALLY absurd errors when you make simple beginner's mistakes, like missing a semi-colon here or there. None of these things are easy for beginners!
That said, if you know C++, you can easily pick up any other language in a matter of days. However, if you have commitment issues, I'd suggest starting with something a little more simple that will introduce you to some of the basics of a C-style language.
Python would be a great place to start, it has good clean syntax that is similar to C, but has a very forgiving interpreter and it is very well-documented. Python also has available OpenGL and SDL bindings, so you can start to learn very useful graphic libraries without being hindered by a lack of a classical programming education. When you begin moving on to projects that require a little more muscle and complexity, C++ would be a good second step.
The Processing library for Java is a great place to start learning the basics of programming as well. Another C style language, Java does its own garbage collection and generally throws less cryptic errors than C. Processing is a fun graphics API for doing simple experiments and learning the ins and outs of basic graphics programming without getting hung up on syntax. It also has good documentation and a very active community. Processing also has its own IDE which can make experimentation and quick "sketches" very fast and easy!
-
compared to coding, is gamemaker really bad? Is coding much more better or not?
-
You can just do more stuff with real code.
I can write the next World of Warcraft in full 3D with real code, you just can't do that in Game Maker. If you can do something in GM that would look exactly the same when coded, and there's no speed loss and you do it in the same time or faster, then the tool is just fine.
You have to evaluate what is possible... As a learning process you better switch to programming something real eventually of course
-
Any game/program you make with game maker will inevitably be more costly on computers in terms of size and speed then if it had been made with C, C++,etc. given that its programmed right of course (it is very unlikely you will program it exactly the way GM would compile it). Game maker is a good tool but it uses a lot of internal functions, etc. that wont be used all the time. For example all 'instances' in GM are automatically assigned a number of variables with preset values that wont necessarily be used. There are probably many other examples but i will leave it there coz i'm lazy. That said GM isn't bad as it allows for you to easily make games without having to tackle a lot of issues you find in coding, I think its good for prototyping and exploring if a game will actually be fun. Of course its also good for those who want to give game making a shot without knowing much or even anything at all about programming. My opinion is however if you want to make something at a bit higher level then for fun or to show to friends, etc. learn to program.
Java = good for mobile games, C to C++ = everything else. Java is again slower then the C languages for a few reasons but it is used in mobile games and thats something to keep in mind if you are interested in earning money programming.
-
compared to coding, is gamemaker really bad? Is coding much more better or not?
Yes.
To put it in perspective, it's similar to the difference between making a website in Microsoft Word, or coding it by hand in HTML and CSS.
While Word can do what you want it to, it has it's limitations, and really only gives you a 'wysiwyg' feel, whereas coding it by hand gives you utmost control.
Gamemaker compared to a real coding language is the same way. In gamemaker, you can make a game, sure, but you have no control over how the game handles it's collisions, or the real meat of the application, etc. Whereas in C, or C++, everything is up to the creator, the only limitations are those set by the machine.
for a typical sidescroller, basic arithmetic will get you by. for decent physics or simple 3D, a working knowledge of trigonometry or at least a passing familiarity with it (combined with a willingness to relearn what you forgot since its been like 5 years since you last took math) would serve you well.

My brother has been pressuring me to puck up python, and get into programming with pygame. Though i've read documentation on it's methods of redrawing the screen, and they appear to have some issues with some machines. (in the documentation i read, it said that on some PCs, redrawing the whole screen with no other overhead can only run at 28 fps. 0_o )
Although, pygame really appeals to me, since it seems a lot more friendly than C++, and it will be easier to narrow down the things i need for game development specifically. Also, it's multi-platform, which reeeaaally appeals to me. My brother is a hardcore linux junkie, and it would be awesome if he'd actually get to beta test games for me without having to switch over to his Windows partition every time. :yay:
I have begun to work my way through some online tutorials with pygame, so i guess i will just put off the coding part of my little project for a bit, and focus on learning pygame. (i can always do the artwork if i get bored, too. :P)
-
if pygame doesn't cut it for you for performance reasons i believe there are python bindings for SDL and OpenGL so you could build your own engine, but still get the benefits of using python period. I know for sure there is a wxWidgets binding for python that you could use in place of SDL as well. good luck!
-
Java = good for mobile games, C to C++ = everything else
I read that was a stereotype. Isn't Java only 1.1-1.3x on average slower than C++ nowdays? :o Java should be ok for a decently fast game?
-
if you're doing most of the work in a hardware layer, like OpenGL, java isn't a whole lot slower. however, you do still sacrifice variable size and more precise control over memory, which can matter a lot for high-performance games.
-
One thing about Java (for me at least) is that while my laptop is unplugged, anything java-based runs rather slowly. Running on AC power it's fine, but if I'm using battery it's sad. Maybe it's just this type of laptop (I've heard others complain about the same thing), but I don't know.
Also, I'm starting to learn Python for my summer job, and am finding it to be rather nifty. Now I just have to find time to really get to know it...
-
It's pretty easy to pick up if you have worked with another language, and understand the basics of programming in general. It's really nice for coding fast, because, as the documentation states, it doesn't convert anything into machine code. It's all based on interpretation.
-
Yeah, I'm finding it quick to pick up; I just have very little time these next few weeks. Ah, well.

Nah, I'm here too ;D

That Virginia massacre is just terrible, but there making such a big deal out of it. People die all the time in iraq and africa for not much of a reason, and yet here 30 people die as a product of America's stupid laws on arms and the whole world has to here about it.
Yeah massacre is sick and unneccesary but so are many other things, i don't see why theres so much publification of it.
-
Feron, It's because it's so unusual and comparatively unexpected, hence more people are interested.
And I disagree with you when you say that Africans die for "not much of a reason". There are reasons. One of the biggest is the malevolently rapacious way in which most of Africa is governed.
-
It's recieving so much attention because it
1) Was a fucking terrible tragedy
2) Occured in a place that is normally considered safe
3) Happened in that place with unprecedented swiftness and devastation.
People die in ghettos. It's expected. People die in wars. It's expected. People die in school. Uh... People die by the dozens in a single concentrated "safe" area by the hand of one man. It's hard not to take notice.
With that said, yes, it was a big deal. A bigass fucking deal.
And I disagree with you when you say that Africans die for "not much of a reason". There are reasons. One of the biggest is the malevolently rapacious way in which most of Africa is governed.
Yes.
-
It happened in a place least expected. </reiterate>
I've been reading on this, it seems there have been many flags that this guy has raised (ie personality, playwrites, etc) but everyone just seemed to have shrugged it off. edit: There are exceptions, though. One the professors, I believe, actually referred him to the counselors. Not that it's important to me, I'd really like to know what drove him to do this...
-
There are a lot of people who raise those same flags and never gun anyone down though. if we start assuming that everyone with those personality traits will gun every body down we'll just live in fear. I know some people who have been referred to counselors, some of the same people like to write some pretty heavy poetry, that doesn't mean they want to act upon what they write, it's a creative outlet.
it's sort of the same generalization people have made with computer games. kids play computer games -> some kids who played computer games commited mass murder -> all violent games train kids to commit mass murder.
according to some media outlets it was a failed romance (coupled with a lot of other shit i expect). I say we ban people from being romantic so this won't happen again.
gun control needs to be tightened x100000

What are our stupid arms laws again? the NRA would never let the government disallow guns in the country, and even if we removed the legal sale of guns, that is only going to stop honest gun owners from getting them. A majority of the times guns used in this sort of situation are stolen. (yet it appears this kid actually bought his fair 'n square.)
-
Call me pessimistic, but I really, REALLY hope that some Hollywood, A-hole, jerk producer/writer WON'T try and make a movie about this event. People that capitalize on tragic events, for their own success just irk me in the wrongest of ways. Yes, this is a tragic event, but honestly, I don't believe current tragedies like this should be glorified on film, like Columbine, and 9/11. Just....don't.
-
Studies in fact show that people react with stronger emotions to small-scale deaths than to huge numbers of deaths.
-

You can't steal guns if nobody has guns to steal :-X and personally as an 'honest' gun owner i don't see the need for pistols or automatic rifles. they should be restricted. and so should the number of guns. '1 gun per month' doesn't count as restricting the number of guns.

What happened with prohibition? All the alcohol destroyed, no sales were legal, and yet there were still bootleggers and speakeasies. Although guns are harder to produce or bring in from outside the country, it would still happen.
-
Yeah, Stwelin beat me to it. Those illegal drugs? People get them. There's already an illegal weapons trade going on. A gun ban would only give those people more money in their pockets and more business through their fingers.
-
Victims are always victims twice in the media.
-
Yeah i realised i was doing a bit of wishful thinking. but if this guy was unable to buy guns legally, i wonder if he'd still have seeked them illegally.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_massacres <- be alarmed at the number of times america appears on that list compared with other countries.
-
There may be no solution for the US gun issues, its not like a switch could be flipped, as the culture is gunnish already. :(
More gun control/less availability *would* decrease gun crime. But it would no way stop this sort of stuff from happening completely. I think saving some lives is important.. Saying there's no point curbing it because it won't stop them completely is a bit weird. Every little counts when it comes to people dying, I would've thought.
At least having a full ban on automatic weapons, some types of handguns, makes sense to me.. What possible argument is there for needing automatics? especially sub-machine guns etc..
hypothetically; If I want to kill people and the only weapon to hand isn't a gun - I'll likely use something else.. Said "other" weapon would be likely less insta-kill and easy to kill many people in a short period. .. Surely getting them out of shops and 'the average house' couldn't actually do any harm.. (?)
I doubt the average angry teen in a 'normal' school has access to seedy underworld stuff so i think it's odd to assume they'd all have access to guns if there was no legal trade..
-
I oppose the banning of any type of guns for the very simple reason that one of the intentions of that part of the constitution is so that rebels would always have a good supply of weaponry for overthrowing the government if it becomes too corrupt.
-
What happened with prohibition? All the alcohol destroyed, no sales were legal, and yet there were still bootleggers and speakeasies. Although guns are harder to produce or bring in from outside the country, it would still happen.
I'd like to let it be known that in other countries the ways a honest citizen goes about buying a gun are more complicated and the screening process much more rigorious. A gun permit means something in -most parts of- greece, for example. But we have Crete where the Cretans when they come into Greece had as one of their clauses that they retain their rights to carry arms, and they do. They're a relatively small island, and accidents with gunplay happen so so so much more there than in any other part of greece.
But this mass killing isn't an accident. It's the result of a gun-bred culture like the US one. It's not a matter of taking the guns from their owners anymore, I think. A culture of fear and a culture of ignorance and a culture of violence make a very explosive mix.
-
I don't think it's necessarily an American thing, or even a gun-related thing. There are crazies everywhere.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osaka_school_massacre
It's sad that the Vtech students were not allowed the means to defend themselves, and the police waited behind their cars until the shooter killed himself.
-
Guns are illegal here, not impossible to get but difficult enough that a student wouldnt really have a chance of getting one and enough ammo to take out 30 people. Guns are for wars and for defensive uses, and posibly sport and farmers, not for anybody to buy from a shop. In some states you must be older to buy alcohol than you must be to buy a gun - now thats just sick.
-
You need a license to own any kind of potentially lethal firearm here. You have to earn that license, so weapon crimes aren't that common here. In fact, crimes performed with airsoft weapons are REALLY common, because people just seem to NEED to be illegal, but they're forced to do it with toys.
And some politicians are like "AUGH BAN AIRSOFT GUNS" which is sad, because what they don't realize is that very little harm is done when criminals only have the fear factor on their side. If airsoft weapons weren't so easy to find, they'd have to find some other sort of weapon - makes me think of knives and stronger air powered rifles, if not actual real firearms. If we ban the harmless replicas, the criminals would have to find other weapons. Because I think, if one's set on being a criminal and robbing banks and crazy stuff, one would keep doing it even if one suddenly has no fake gun to wave around to get ones cash.
-
Wasn't there a ban on fully automatics thats like...warranty (?) wore off because Bush didn't resign it back into law or something? (Sorry, I ain't so keen on all this pullitikal terminoligy.)
I say tighten the control like a madman, and ban fully automatics. I'm all for constitutional rights, but why the hell would any man or woman in his or her right mind have need of a fully automatic weapon? Even semi automatic. What, you gonna go huntin' and litter the deer with like twenny rounds? Self defense? That's called overkill. Most of those incidents listed in that wiki arcticle were probably carried out by people who had no thought of what they were doing, so consumed by emotion and feuled by hopelessness that they exploded. If guns were harder to get a hold of, they probably would have ended up committing suicide without the massacres. Not a happy ending either way, but I'd rather that than this.
Why the hell does the NRA hold so much influence in America?
-
While the constitution does specifically provide the right to bear arms in order to raise a militia to protect the populace from the government, it IS important to realize the context in which that amendment was written. The US was still under the impending threat of takeover by massive, global empires, and had no infrastructure for a standing army. So, to defend this amendment by claiming that this is a right we still need, over 200 years later, you are assuming the following things:
1 - That US citizens would actually have the ambition to rebel
2 - That US citizens would not be able to acquire arms despite the ban (because surely, none of the US's many, many enemies around the world would help to overthrow the govt)
3 - That outside forces would not interrupt the process in our moment of greatest weakness anyways
I'm not ready to say we should outright ban weapons, but I do happily support rigid licensing AND limitations on the quantity of weapons you can own.
-
Aaaah guys! I don't know whether i've just become utterly idiotic or not, but i can't seem to find anywhere that lets me change my avatar.. I went on profile and clicked all the links down the side but couldn't find the option. Hm..
-
It's missing.
-
It's not missing. I used my awesome telepathic powers to make you think that it's missing.
But seriously, it's not there anymore. I guess poor old Snake's future avatar will never see the light of day.*le sigh*
-
I don't know if this was mentioned already, but does anyone find it at all funny that the new Pixelation banner pixel mixes?
Or maybing I be trip'n. Dawg.
-
yes, mixed resolutions. Can be done tastefully.
-
Heheh. I guess it just boasts the talent that this board holds.
-
I thought it was funny that it's just a paint-over.....
-
I think it's funny that YOU'RE just a paint-over.
But seriously, I don't think that's what he was referring to. There are three pixel sizes in the banner, excluding Bruce (though he belongs to one of them).
-
Heheh. I guess it just boasts the talent that this board holds.
I guess it just tells us Ptoing can mix resolutions.
-
Ptoing = talent.
And in fact, I'm not so fond of the 1x pixels to the very left. Infact, I don't like it at all.
-
Yeah, the rounded part does look pretty shabby now that you mention it.
-
Yeah, the rounded part does look pretty shabby now that you mention it.
you do better then. dont just sit there and moan while other people spend time and effort on making this forum a nice place to visit.
-
Wow. Cool down Feron. He's just agreeing with Xion that an element of the banner doesn't quite blend in as nicely as it could. That could be considered constructive critique, you know. And that's THE thing that makes Pixelation such a nice place to visit.
Personally, I don't care. Looks good to me. I wouldn't know what else to do with that part of the banner.
-
right. we should totally go back to the original layout. (http://web.archive.org/web/20040412171045/http://web1.t43.greatnet.de/)

No.
Just noticed; Helm's post count is my year of birth. Not significant at all. Just something I noticed.
-
I vote that each of Helm's final 10 posts be the most constructive, detailed crits he has ever made. It would be good to go 10 posts into the 2nd Pixel Millennia of Helm's post count( I'll bring the new years baby, and booze...or I'll be the drunk guy wearing a diaper, with a bottle of Tequila in my hand...either way, I'll make it sexy...)
-
No more mere mortal posts for Helm. I say that every post after 2000 should be done entirely in pixel art--no cheating with fonts either! :yell: Hand pixel and refine every critique, comment, and one-liner...it would give Helm an almost Koran or Bible-like quality.
 No sane goat would ever live up to that challenge!

I like the new 'All' button that has been added :)

i second the motion!

I like the new 'All' button that has been added :)
Hmm, i do like it, but sometimes (actually, quite alot of the time) i click it when i mean to click the last page (habit) and so it loads a phat page with tonnes of images... not a HUGE problem though, i'm sure i'll get over it. :noob:
-
I'll try to go into detailed crits for the rest of the posts 'till I hit the next stage of awesome.

I'm stocking up on toilet paper and MRE's for my bomb shelter as we speak.

I like this new [ALL] option.

and on the topic of pixel art, what do you do when youve got 2 kickass ideas in your head, and a mouse-less laptop and a shitty monitor?
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa

1bit ansi-art? O_o

Borrow someone else's mouse and do line art? Buy a really cheap one?

Farewell for a bit everyone. I'm moving to London, ON for my new job at Big Blue Bubble and won't have internet for a little while. Looking forward to seeing some amazing stuff when I get back.

Good luck Fry! ROCK THE HOUSE and drive safe!

scratch my previous coment, im ON A BRAND NEW MAC OS ;D
yeaaaa first time mac user!@ anything i should know? post! :D

Cya, fry.

Eck: try out Pixen, it's a special pixel art program for Mac OS...
-
thanks gil, got it and i love it already!
-
once you have mac, you never go back!
umm i dont really like pixen, try and acquire photoshop from somewhere - its great for doing other things besides pixel-art.
i would say get adium for your msn/aim program, works very well plus you can customise the design layout so it looks nice. You might also need WMP for mac for some video files, plus quicktime pro. Handbrake is a great program for ripping full-length movie to very high quality MP4, i just rent, burn, then take them back :p
Once you use mac for a while you really see the benfits over windows.
What mac have you got?
-
once you have mac, you never go back!
from bash.org:
<Mat> what's a mac sysadmin?
<Bru> someone who can remove shrinkwrap from macromedia and adobe packages and knows the difference between appleshare and appletalk
Personally i dislike macs. All their hardware is jumbled up inside (granted, you never touch it.) Plus, their ad campaign was enough to drive me away from EVER wanting to switch. Their users get so stuck up. My art teacher is a mac elitist, and it drives me nuts, he's so proud of himself just because he doesn't have a right mouse button and has a ridiculous GUI.
Mac has two things going for it: looks, and the fact that no one will waste their time making viruses for it.
-
I have an idea - let's argue over whether macs or PCs are better! OR, optionally, we could argue the merits of various religions or philosophies. OR bla bla bla bla bla bla bla
Not that I mind the off-topic-ness of the posts, it's just that after a while you start to get a grasp for what subjects are Arguments That Never End Because They Are Subjective Topics :P
-
my 360 owns your mac
-
AdamA has it down completely.. The mac/PC thing *never ends* - though i think it's sometimes a fun debate. I prefer using macs but I like having windows around for extra games, hehe.
Feron: Pixen crashes all the time for me.. Well, it used to - I should probably give it another chance. I use photoshop for pretty much everything (mostly not pixel graphics!)... I second your adium comment.. Adium is gorgeous.. Also, Colloquy for IRC is a good bet.
Stwelin: Jumbled up inside? They seem tidier? (http://www.apple.com/macpro/expansion.html) I spend about the same time inside/upgrading my mac as I do my PC/s.. Also all macs made in the last year (+?) either have a right mouse button, or the ability to do right clicks without using the keyboard (two-finger click on laptops) and they've supported multi button mice for over a decade - You probably already know about that, its just the "omgar macs only have one button, i like more buttons!" thing is always brought up in most mac/pc conversation, hehe.
I agree though, there are a lot of annoying Mac elitists, but they're on both sides of the fence really. I guess as the Mac guys are a minority they may feel the need to be more vocal about it? Mac users do sometimes get looked down on or implied/labelled as dumb.. Which makes it easy to get defensive. When I started my course at Uni (BSc games design) the amount of jokey crap people would say was bordering on surreal, and almost always out of ignorance/having been fed misinformation. I dont think there's a higher proportion of annoying or stuck up Mac users than Windows ones - but there are closed minded people on "both sides" for sure. People just need to defend their investment I guess, without realising the right thing for them isn't necessarily the right thing for everyone else.
Personally I think the main thing going for the Mac (other than the stability/pseudo-immunity/looks) is lots of unique software.. just like windows. :) So it really depends what software you want to run.
Random personal Mac thing: I'm *very* happy as I just flashed an ati9800xt to work in my "old" dualG5 powermac. Hurrah for free/cheap upgrades! Also, before I was a Mac user I was an Amiga user.. Part of me's still waiting for a usable modern Amiga as a hobby machine. That part has been waiting a LONG time. Grr.
What type are you on Feron? My main machine is the Powermac, but I have a Macbook for Uni.. Being able to run windows+osX simultaneously is useful as we need to run a lot of Windows only dev stuff. Virtools mostly. Blech.
bla bla bla bla bla bla bla
That too. I fail so bad at avoiding this sort of topic. :'(
-
Once I slid a goat wide open and inside her intestines I saw the future of the world. Prophetic visions overtook me and sent me on a vision quest, far beyond the lands of current time, deep into the culmination of the age of man.
They didn't use Macs there.

New macs are basically PCs with fancy cases anyways. You can run Windows on a mac and Mac OS X on PC.
-

you... can't run OS X on a pc. it's all hardware specific.
edit: well, it's POSSIBLE, but it's not meant to be done. it's a 'hack' as they call it. (at least, the article i read.)
but why would you WANT to? :\

OS X on PC = fail. You try it once, and if it doesn't work you're out of luck...

My only problem with my Mac is that the mouse feels so much different than from when I was on a PC... like it's less accurate. I've tried adjusting the settings but I just can't get it right. Pixelling feels so weird.

Well, the funny thing is that I hear issues from BOTH sides of the equation everyday. I do tech support for Fiber Optic services, which includes video(tv/cable), voice(phone), and data(internet). At our dept., we have remote assistance over some customer's cpus, and I must say that I've dabbled in all OS's. That's Linux, Macs, and PCs. To be honest, half the crap that most people argue over about the machines, DON'T F***ING MATTER TO THE COMMON PERSON.
I've talked to Mac and PC elitists. They're both annoying, and fail to see the overall picture. People say one OS is better than the other, but I could honestly care less. I hear problems on both OS's on a daily basis, which means overall, they both suck equally as much and on the contrary, are as equally good. For ex.:
" Why do I keep getting these re-occuring pop-ups on my Mac, and than it starts freeze? I thought Macs don't get viruses! That's supposed to only happen with Windows machines!! I'm suing Verizon for letting this happen!!" BUZZZ, wrong. Please try again later, good sir.
" I can't open I.E!! Every time I try to open it, it just flashes, and nothing happens. What the hell is the problem! (*log into cpu and check settings, as well as alt. ways to clear cache and cookies, and open it through various ways. No dice, chico...). Why can't you fix it! After all, I bought the internet from you guys, and you can't even provide a connection for me. Verizon is trying to destroy me!..." Just...no. The connection on your cpu is valid, as we can ping website, and you are definitely gaining an ip address. It's not my fault, NOR is it Verizons, that you didn't try and download another browser just incase the other went down. Tough cookies, we don't support browser issues. So down load I.E. from your win cd, and call us back with another one of your brilliant issues.
" I can't send or recieve mail from my Mac mail/outlook! Why, it was working fine the other day!!! I bet ya', if I had Win/ Mac this would be working a helluva' lot better!" Nopers. Both are pretty shitty when they want to be. But I can still try to assist you in making them less shitty. Personally, I'd rather you NOT use the Verizon mail services, as IT is in fact the shitty culprit, that culminates your problems. Ever heard of Yahoo!, or MSN? Yeah, I'd suggest using them instead. Verizon isn't a Dictatorship, sir/madam. We're not forcing you to use it...sooo don't...please.
" THIS IS BULLSHIT! EVER SINCE I UPDATED FROM XP TO VISTA ON TO MY CPU, SOME OF MY PROGRAMS AREN'T WORKING CORRECTLY! I THOUGHT THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE NEXT BEST THING. I BLAME YOUR DAMN, STUPID COMPANY FOR NOT WARNING ME OF THIS!" Ha, ha. Looks like somebody never read the fine print. Once again, Verizon=not dictatorship. We don't tell you what to do. It's ok, though. I could use a good laugh, so I'll let you yell it out from the mountain tops about pretty much what I've heard billions of times before...have at it hoss.
" This is crap! How come my Mac OS 9.x works just fine, but my Mac OS X won't even load some of my programs correctly! What the hell is the problem. They're both on the same cpu! They should work just as fine damn it! To be honest, I think it's Verizon. Ever since I got you guy's services, my OSX program has been acting funky. What did you guys do to it, damn it!"...(le sigh) That's right sir. We did it. In our spare time, we like to wear long leather boots, march to the sound of a mad man crying fascism to our supreme race, wear small mustaches, and helmets with little spikes sticking out at the top. Did I mention we don't support issues caused by Jews....sir, you are an ass. Oh, and I most definitely can't support this issue. Good luck and happy camping on resolving it, though. Toodles!
So yeah, this whole argument should be less focused on figuring out which OS is better, and more focused on figuring out how to cure the oh so subtle disease of " Stupid." It's contagious...( I hate my job...)
-
I'm using (Or was, my desktop computer died recently, possibly the psu, anyhow) WinXP on my desk comp, OS X on my laptop and Ubuntu on my server, and can't honestly say I prefer one over another in general. Sure, when it comes to doing certain things I might pick one of them, but as a general desktop comp, I don't see any reason to use one over another, because there's always some quirks in an OS that another does better, but it's just a circle jerk.
For me the important thing is rather that they all can work together, network shares, remote desktop, etc, and that works just dandy from what I've noticed.
Though, if I were to choose an OS to use on a laptop, I would choose OS X, if I have mac hardware that is, because expose and the touchpad scroll features rock (I know Windows have similar things, but from what I've noticed, those third party products aren't nearly as good as the ones that are in OS X, no fanboyism)
And for server, I haven't tried using OSX, but from sad experiences, I find myself more comfortable using linux distros for servers rather than windows.

Has anyone seen this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1EbNvHDxbA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1EbNvHDxbA)
Saw a trailer for his upcoming movie but can't seem to relocate it.

Xion, that is some awesome shit right there... You better find the trailer and post it! Couldn't find the part 3 though, the ending was cut off?
Heres something you guys might find interesting.. My friend looked it up and refered it to me. Wish they had darker chalks tho...

any way to hook up a regular 2 buton mouse on a mac?
-
Tutorial on how to hook up an USB multibutton mouse to a mac:
Take the usb cable and plug it in -> done
Most usb mice work on macs no problem. I personally hate that singlebutton thingie, so i've never really used a mac with those.
Macs are great for work but bad for gaming.
-
any way to hook up a regular 2 buton mouse on a mac?
its called a mighty mouse, way better than single button mouse. If you dont wanna pay lots of money for one then just use a PC mouse plugged into usb.

Mice are overrated and poop. Tablets 4 lyfe!

The PC/mac thing is a fascinating phenomenon, indeed. I'm a PC guy. They feel like home to me, and I've grown to like some of the little quirks of Windows. Especially when my computers consistently do nothing to me, but as soon as someone else wants to use them they act up.
However, I've sat down with Macs a few times, and the first time, it was like... well, I didn't understand it. But the SECOND time it felt like stepping into a limo or something. They're beautiful machines. No matter how many smooth fades and translucency effects Microsoft try to cram into their new operative systems, they still feel rough and edgy somehow, while a Mac feels like bathing in warm butter.
That's a good thing, if you didn't know.
However, for professional and heavy stability-dependent work, like video and audio editing and rendering, I'd MUCH rather be using a Mac. I don't know how many times hours of video editing work has gone down the drain because of Windows. That just doesn't happen on a Mac.

I'm a purist when it comes to machines. i really have nothing against those who like the smoothness and the overall feel of mac's gui, but i would take a command terminal over that any day. I am the kind of guy who thinks the mouse is the silliest invention ever. It might seem strange since i am an artist, and artist's work ethic tend to demand things like a fancy gui and mouse operated programs, but i like the simplicity.

My dad bought me a tablet yesterday, can't wait for it to arrive. :0'
-
I cant do pixelling with a tablet, i dont know why. :/
I use an Intuos for pretty much everything but pixelly stuff.
-
Congrat, Larwick, but a warning is necessary: They take a while to get used to. Also, don't expect much precision at any but the few highest zoom levels when pixelling.

there are a few things i hate about macs. 1- directories and interface are too automated to be of any use to me, especially on their laptops where you end up getting yourself into all sorts of rediculous "handy" tools because using a tablet or a touchpad it's impossible to keep the pointer exactly where you want it and anywhere else calls up something you never wanted - without you clicking. this is a real trend too - everything on a mac is done for you. All i want is a computer that only files my commands :( :( :(
the other thing is their commercials. every time i see one, i want to buy a PC. especially the new one that mentioned "wmp.dll" as a "cryptic error message". it is telling you the exact name of the file you want to fix!! what more could you possibly want from an error message...? Macs dont do that though, they do the spinning rainbow wheel for 20 minutes before just not doing what you asked.
macs also break too easily. every virus is almost completely fatal, requiring a format, new harddrive, or even just a new computer. it happens quickly to, and there is no way to know easily what might be wrong until it is too late to stop it. Everyone i have ever known who has purchased a mac has seen it die suddenly and catastrophically.
Many people like macs because they don't want to think about things step by step, they just want to do. push all the clutter aside. Its like the new photoshop - half the work the old versions needed, but also with only half the potential and even less thought put in. thank god they left all the old features and made it so you can toggle the new ones.
these are things meant for people who just dont care about what they are doing. people who want to get decent photos in 3 clicks, or listen to music, or make industry standard art fast. Assemblylined comfy straight-to-the-destination computers where the pc's take the bumpy but more interesting scenic rout. Its a family computer and a business computer, but i personally think it is terrible as a personal computer.
-
Every virus is almost completely fatal? There hasnt been a *single* report of a serious osX virus outbreak in the wild, and osX is like.. 7 years in public use?.. I totally disagree about the breakability thing. I've never had that sort of issue.. (ive had a couple of hds die completely, but they were just hds, nothing to do with the mac) In my family we have a G3 ibook, a G4 powemac, G4 imac, G4 powerbook, a G5 Powermac, a Macbook, and a Macbook Pro and all work as perfectly as ever.. And they've all recieved seriously heavy use. ... And you do get detailed error messages most of the time - if anything crashes all the info goes in the Console crash log anyway.
Also I dont really know what you mean about it doing things for you, Windows is no better with it's "wizards". It doesn't do anything without me telling it to first? The OS's really aren't *that* different imo. All the main productivity apps are identical, and the finder + spotlight is not that different to Windows Explorer.. How is a Mac a bad Personal Computer? It lets you easily install X11 and run pretty much all unix apps. It comes with a fully functional unix terminal out of the box... You could choose to use that if you hate the UI. There are "easy" apps and more complex ones, like there is on windows. It's not inherently a lazy person's OS.
One thing I really hate is the idea that if something is harder its in some way better or more worthy. You get that a lot from Linux bods. If you really can get the same results with less work, what's so bad about that? I really don't understand the argument, why would you choose to make things more difficult..? As long as you aren't losing functionality to make something easier then it doesn't strike me as a problem. If they're making photoshop easier for beginners, that strikes me as a good thing, as long as they don't prune stuff!
One thing I definitely agree on, the ads largely suck. :/
Hehe computer debates. :'(

Greetings pixelers. I was just wondering, i recently started trying out the Opera web browser, since it uses less memory than firefox, at least for me, and i realized that when i click to resize images that are not transparent, the pixels get all smoothed out an gross. (as opposed to the 'nearest neighbor' or lossless resize.)
Anyone know if this is rectifiable?

Just had an idea for a activity/challenge: make your avatar in the style of the 'chaos engine' portraits.

I liek that, fadatar follow up <3
-
I had an idea for a challenge :0
Make a nice picture using flawed pixel-art techniques. Like for example, you'd have to resort to jaggy sel-out on a picture but still try to make it nice-looking.
Another challenge will be to create the best sprite to your ability, but use pillow-shading for coloring xD
Man, can't come up with more, though ... Broken perspective perhaps? Black outlines? Pixel against a white BG?
I think it could be interesting and I dunno, amusing seeing a thread with REALLY ambitious pictures, only that every and each of them is pillow-shaded.
:] My sense of humor is shit xD
-
Ha ha, yeah. Pillow shading + good sprite-art=Impossible...
-
I actually see a lot of fun in that activity. Nothing to learn from, which kinda goes against our ways around here, but would be funny nonetheless.

Quite the opposite! if you really took it seriously, you would be challenging all of your preset ideas and be much more of an awesome artist. god knows that in paid jobs one often has to work within standards that are below one's own.
I have been a supporter of the posiblity of nice jaggy based pictures for a looong long time. you just gotta know how to use them =)
-
Almost any common wisdom can be turned on its head. You can learn lots by trying to find a way to make pillowshading to look good. I don't know if you can achieve it, but you'll learn in the process.

I should use photobucket to, I'm starting to get pissed off at imageshack for taking up to 5min to load up a damn image.
-
That's weird. Imageshack is almost near instant for me. But if you want something that you can link to and show off at any time, Imageshack isn't ideal anyway.

ahem... reached world ranking 12 in ninja gaiden sigma.
Wanted to get to the top10, but that spot already made my brain hurt. :blind:

OH! and yeah, gotta try and make some picture pillowshaded sometime :y:

I hate you for Ninja Gaiden Sigma. I hate Team Ninja for Ninja Gaiden Sigma.
I desperately want it. Or even better, a freaking sequel. Ever since the first rumors of Black, I've been CRAVING a sequel.

There's some rumors about a proper sequel coming for the xblox360, so i can stop craving as well. Ninja gaiden really pushes you as a player until you really feel like a ninja beating up enemies that were nearly impossible the first time you met them.
(can't insert more quotes for some reason )
DINOSAURS! man those were awesome. I want the raptor suit for myself and walk to work wearing it every day.

Just noticed that macs is spelt scam backwards ;@ Yus, not very remarkable considering it's a colloquial term for macintosh, and it needs to be plural, but the connection remains! :P

my computer went all retarded again... started deleting crucial dlls' etc because they were apparently corrupted..
fine, "I'm done with this hard drive" I said, I swapped out my C drive for a nice 150gig HDD, and started reinstalling windows
but the computer wouldn't detect the HDD.. so after a while I figured there must be something wrong with the power supply for that hard drive or the ribbon or something.. so I unplugged one of the other HDD's and used those cables...
so I think all the problems I've had is because of those faulty cables.. constantly stepping down my graphics card somehow, crashing all the time, deleting stuff all the time.. it got to the point I could only download 2 things at once, and if I did anything else my comp would crash, photoshop got unbelievably retarded, videos ran at like 10 FPS with a ton of tearing.. man
so now, even though I have to download and install a lot of stuff again, its worth it.. my computer's quite respectable now :)
edit-
only bad thing is I can now confirm there are problems with my mouse, and it wasn't my computer's fault :P

Good luck with resolving that :D
In good computer news, my sound card just decided to start working for the first time in a year. Now I can listen to Youtube videos. AWESOME.
Even stranger so, it started working in the middle of "The Scary Door" thing from Futurama on Youtube after I got linked there.
Can you tell I'm excited?
-
gargh... isn't going as smoothly as things were initially..
turns out my old C drive is now corrupt, which is a bummer, coz flashfxp was on it, which is a pain in the ass to set up, lots of movies etc, and then I realized all my graphics were on it, luckily most of the stuff is backed up on the internet, but there's still a lot I'm going to have trouble tracking down since I don't have the history containing them all.. and I'll probably have to rip the tiles from my own game >_<
but, I'm searching for any program that boasts recovering files from a corrupt/unreadable hard drive, so any help is greatly, greatly appreciated

Say hello to the owner of a brand new 20.1" Samsung SyncMaster 204B!

-
Say hello to the owner of a brand new 20.1" Samsung SyncMaster 204B!
That seems excessive.
Or maybe I'm just jealous, which is more likely.
-
my only regret is that playing 2d games that have pixel art is that the pixels get fuzzy and gross on an LCD when the resolution changes. Other than that, it's awesome.
Edit: actually, it's fine as long as it's a 4:3 ratio. but anything else it gets grooosss.

I recently accidently formatted my harddrive and installed linux, but still managed to get back 99% of my old content on it by using some hdd recovery software, I can't remember the name of the software I used, but It's not freeware. I suspect this software will work well for corrupt drives also. PM me for more info.

Feron: Yep, he's been a mod for a while now.
Hey, congrats on the promotion, Adam.
:P
.TakaM: When my external got corrupted, I used Data Doctor (http://www.datadoctor.in/) to get the data back. I'm sure there might be a cheaper or easier way to do it, but this worked.

thank you guys so much, recovering everything as I speak, so relieved :D

over 53,000 out of 54,000 files recovered successfully :D barely even corrupt :-\
so relieved to have all my graphics back thanks again guys

What happened to corrupt it? ???

no idea, I was just lying in bed watching some scrubs, then suddenly everything went to like 8bit graphics and it crashed

Random question... how do I change my avatar here? I've gone through all the options and I can't seem to find anything for my avatar...
-
Right now we can't change our avatars (unless you replace the image on your avatar's URL, I guess)
There was an update on the forums engine, and not all the old templates are compatible with the new ones, which makes stuff not appear etc.
Goat was working on fixing it though.

i really hate these kind of videoes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk2sPl_Z7ZU
anyone else?

I think everyone here hates them :P
though I think that mona lisa one is the best.. but its not like it has any good competition
-
Ah, I don't really mind them as long as they don't claim them to be pixel art.
But I do hate all the positive feedback they get >:(
-
I looks nice. But you can't win my heart with a reproduction of a master painting.
EDIT: Yes, I'm pretty hot.
-
i dont understand why those guys are 'so good' that they cant create their own, original, art?
-
What the hell. I've already bashed two of those videos apart. Do I need to do it again? Percieve me as elitist all you want. I still say they're using the wrong software for the wrong thing, and also, it's practically just tracing. Some dude made a Master Chief "based on" a Halo 3 wallpaper. Except he kept alt+tabbing to a window of said wallpaper for, like, exactly every line he drew. And he got praaaaaiiiiise.
Damn, I'm ranting. It's been a while. I guess I can blame it on being 3am.
In any case. A good artist doesn't need to upload a "look at what I did!!" video on Youtube to show off how good they are. That's the first of many mistakes they make. They're obviously just trying to show off for a cheap ego boost. The second mistake is, of course, using MS Paint as if it was vector based. The ONLY strength Paint has is that it's pixel perfect, but no one ever thinks of making use of that.
Also, no Helm, this does not mean I suddenly hate Paint.
-
I totally agree with you Rox, I see it in other artforms too. People making mediocre paintings using their foreheads and stuff, and they recieve praise from everyone uneducated in the ways of art! Moreso then deserving painters. D:
Then again I remember back in primary school when I used to draw battle scenes with my friends in paint. I vaguely remember a tank of two circles, a large rectangle atop them, with crudely drawn army "camo" style paint all over it. Good times. :D
-
I remember drawing dragons n stuff completely with the circle tool in mspaint.. and of course bright blue skies with spray paint clouds

Ah, yeah. Those were the good days. :blind:

Probably by replacing the file on his server but keeping the same filename (my guess anyways)

Dropkick him in the teeth when he cusses. It won't necessarily make him stop cussing, but without, you won't understand what he's saying anyways...

An old black preacher had used the letters B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. after his name for many years without ever having had anyone from his congregation ask what they meant. Finally a nosey old woman questions him about it.
"Well, sister," he answers. "You know what B.S. stands for, don't you?"
"I sure do," says the lady indignantly. "Bull shit!"
"Right," says the preacher. "And M.S. just means more of the same, and Ph.D. means piled high and deep."
-

Indeed. Panda mentioned it so i was like... Wh00t. :yay:
When you replace it on photobucket the old image appears at first.. you just have to wait and it seems to change. Heheh.

Are you kidding me? Rube Goldberg devices are one of the most productive things the human race has ever thought up! Also, it's hard not to have a life if you can make something like that. I've wanted to try it several times, but I seriously don't have enough stuff here at home to pull it off. See what I'm trying to say? The more things you have lying around, the more interesting a life you must have. I just have a computer and a bunch of games, and some kitchen appliences.
I bet I could pull something off, actually, using empty cans to set things in motion... But I really don't.. want to.

I can't stop playing Halo 3! Argh!
-
Halo is on live already?
Goddamn. I'd get it but after relocating my 360 in the livingroom, i noticed it didn't have wirelesssss for fsdnfjkln sake. The best part is that the 360 wlan adapter thingie costs $99. All the other consoles including handhelds have wlan built in. :'( Gotta bring it back next to the computer i guess. I hear there's a Forza 2 demo out as well.

haha all my frends skipped school to play halo 3 all say

Halo is for squares. ::)
What's with this generation and their obsession with graphics? YES. it looks pretty. How long till the gameplay is boring?
-
heh, I wouldn't say halo3 is a game for graphic whores, it looks nice and all, but nothing I've seen screams "next gen"
as for the gameplay, I'm going to get halo3, but I'm not even gonna start the single player, only getting it for the multiplayer :y:, I found both halo 1 and 2 to be very overrated, but when you balance out the multiplayer in halo2 properly, it's really good
btw, I have one friend who is a halo nut, he's taken off 1 week to play the beta release.. I remember back in school, one of my friends didnt come to school for about a month when GTA vice city came out..
-
Halo 3 is fugly.
FPSes r stoopid.
'Cept TimeSplitters.
That was cool.

I play Tribes 2 and I'm sticking to it!

Does anyone remember the good ol' days of pixelation.swoo.net? That was back when I first started pixelling. I totally lost track of everyone but splat(thanks to his DA page). Anyway, it's good to be back, I'll try to post some work this weekend.

Yeah, bees knees= good.
-
Halo is for squares. ::)
What's with this generation and their obsession with graphics? YES. it looks pretty. How long till the gameplay is boring?
I agree with the second part. And so does Halo 3. Because Halo 3 still looks like Halo. It's just got some more detail in the environment, some better lighting and effects, and higher quality textures. But it still looks like Halo. That's a good thing. So many people seemed to expect Halo 3 to look like Gears of War. But thing is, Gears of War doesn't look good... It's technically impressive, yes, but I don't think it looks good at all.
So it's really refreshing that Halo 3 doesn't go nuts about graphical capabilities, and lets gameplay take the front seat once again.
Also, no, it's not "on live"... Crackdown owners and people who got selected through Bungie's Rule of 3 and Friends and Family programs are enjoying the Halo 3 beta for a limited time of three weeks. I'm a happy Crackdown owner, so I take the opportunity to play it now and then.
-
How long till the gameplay is boring?
Probably a long while, seeing as my friends and I still do Halo 2 system link get-togethers all the time.
-
Indeed. One of the things I miss the most since I moved here (in September last year) has been split-screen multiplayer Halo 2 with two of my best friends. With a good group of close friends, Halo 2 never gets old. In fact, sometimes we still do some Halo 1 co-op for old times' sake. That never really gets old either, amazingly. It feels different enough to make me prefer Halo 2, but the first game's co-op still surprises me with how awesome it is.
Halo 3 will be no different, especially judging by how the beta feels. It's like a golden combination of the first two games, with superb new graphics, awesome new weapons and all kinds of other cool stuff. Not to mention we finally get to finish the damn fight.

I haven't played past halo1, the series never stood out to me after my experience there. It's just a traditional whoop-de-do shooter. sure, fps fans can spend hours upon hours playing it, but it doesn't make it good. There are just as many people calling halo shit as people kissing Bungie's ass.
To me it just seems mediocre. Game developers are really losing their edge. Bring back ingenuity. Bring back innovation. I want to play a game that doesn't leave me feeling like I've wasted 2 hours just aiming for people's heads. A game should be more than that.
-
I'm still up for discussing halo :P
for me, it reminds me a lot about goldeneye.
I remember staying up all night with my friends, covering up the radar's with tape, inventing crazy games to play with goldeneye, and now me and my friends do that with halo, grenade only matches, beat down only, oddball with 3 skulls, its great.
another thing I like is how the game isn't completely focused on shooting, it is pretty unbalanced, but all the different vehicles and different ways to attack make the game pretty unique.
there are even instances where it reminds me of streetfighter, say you see someone really far away, and you start running to each other, any other FPS you'd be shooting them the whole time, but say you've got a shotgun, you know you can't afford to waste ammo at that range, and your best bet is to jump and shoot then beat down.
but like I said, the game has a ton of flaws, but they can thankfully be ironed out if you force them out, and the bungie team have said many times theyre basically ashamed of the halo2 multiplayer, how broken it is etc
so i have high hopes for halo3.. the multiplayer atleast
-
the hours of halo 2 multiplayer i have done is rediculously high. once you get into it, its incredibly addictive. When none of your friends are there - just connect to XBL and play with some dumb american 14 year olds :P
There are quite a few glitches on lots of maps - but they can be good if you know how to use them.
one of my friends has confiscated my 360 off me till exams are over, probably a good thing now the H3 beta i out.
-
heheh, the "super jumps" :P
the kind of glitches I think enhance the game... a shame they made it impossible in the recently released maps
-

Let me rant about this for a while! I love ranting about things I like, see. And I've gotten way too little sleep lately...
Anyway. Halo doesn't stand out unless you play it a lot, that's the weird thing. Before its release, I thought it looked boring. Then I tried it, and I just couldn't manage the controls, and it felt really slow (mind you, that's around the time I was playing Counter-Strike). So then I bought it, played it, was amazed and confused at the storyline. A thing that was rare in shooters back in 2002, and something that doesn't come across from reading impressions and looking at gameplay videos. And then me and one of my best friends played co-op... and things would never be the same again. You know, the last time I played Halo 1 co-op was earlier this year. It's just incredible how much fun it becomes once you both start working as a team, and crank up the difficulty slightly higher than any of you can do alone.
And in a really tactical game where every weapon is set up in a rock-paper-scissors fashion and you can only ever carry two, having a teammate suddenly makes it even more strategic. It goes from being a game that you might think you can probably just run around with the assault rifle aiming at heads until you're done, to something much more complex. Now you've got four possible weapons at the same time, but usually where there's a power weapon lying around (rocket launcher or sniper rifle), there's only one. And that makes the two players assume very different roles. If I grab the sniper rifle, you can bet I'll play MUCH more cautiously than I like doing on co-op while my friend runs up with the assault rifle to flush the enemies out. My friend always grabs the rocket launcher, though, because he rules with that thing. So he's the anti-vehicle anti-air dude while I cover him from infantry.
And then there's those awesome sneak sections in Assault on the Control Room which are MUCHLY enhanced because of the slight randomization in Halo. Every cluster of enemies is slightly randomized. Sometimes you'll encounter two elites instead of one, but when there's only one he'll be of a higher rank and possibly more dangerous. And their starting position when you enter a room is also pretty random. So, during that part where there's a ton of sleeping grunts and two patrolling elites, I tend to try to clear the entire room without firing off a round. It's really hard, but it's extremely satisfying. And if that fails, my friend comes rushing with the rocket launcher, I die, he hides, I respawn and we clear the room.
Halo didn't really invent much new stuff in the genre, but it was definitely the first to combine so many different ideas and make them all work near-flawlessly. And it kicked off the rechargable health things in games that every game and it's grandma use now. The two weapon limit and the fact that ALL weapons are useful in certain circumstances gives it an incredible tactical depth. Never in the game is one particular weapon completely useless. And actually, the very first weapon you get is the most useful in the game, which is definitely fresh compared to games where you get the only good weapon on the second to last level. And not only do the weapons themselves have a rock-paper-scissors system, but the enemies kinda do, too. There are primarily two kinds of weapons, plasma and projectile. And there are primarily... well, a whole bunch of enemies. Shielded, unshielded, portable shield and mechanical. Plasma works against shields, projectiles work against flesh. You'll want to finish off an enemy with a portable shield using projectiles, and a mechanical enemy is best fought with plasma weapons. And you can only ever carry two...
Throwing grenades without having to change weapons also felt pretty revolutionizing. I never used grenades in games before Halo. Did I mention the storyline was amazing? Oh, also, you drive vehicles! A car, a hovercraft, a tank and a flying alien machine! Useful non-linear vehicle paths in an FPS! And then there's the multiplayer, but I feel this is enough text for one post. I'm done ranting now. It felt good. I'm just saying, chances are, if you have the ability to not dislike an FPS, you'd probably love Halo if you'd given it a try or three. I can't see why anyone would dislike it unless he can't stand first person games in general.
-
In a nutshell: Run n' gun. Shoot things and they die. Occasionally hide if someone shoots back and hits.
What i like is how all the weapons are just as useful, you just use them in a different way, which changes how you approach different situations. Also sneak and melee attacks give some change of pace to the gunningggg.
Other than that i can't find individual features that would make it great, it's just solid all around and very accessible for anyone. Everything in the game is kind of neutral in a way, so it doesn't make anyone go EWWW on things, kinda like if you ask someone if you like rocks. No-one will go, EWW I HATE ROCKS they're so UGLY.
I prefer things less neon and blocky tho, unless it's a transformers game. Didn't finish Halo 1 or 2 btw. Picked both up, played for a while(maybe halfway?) and once i put them down i forgot i had them.
-
Oh, there are many more features than that. But as I probably said (I'm not gonna read everything I wrote again!), it takes a while to identify Halo's little details that make it so good.
One is the randomized enemies. You won't realize it until you've played a level so many times you know every room by heart. THEN you start realizing that things aren't what you thought, you need to adapt your tactics, and everything goes to hell because you thought you knew exactly how to beat the game. A select few parts of the environments also have a bit of random to them. The last stone bridge on Assault on the Control Room has rocks on it that change places every time you reload the level.
There's also the rechargable shield, like I said, that ensures that you enter every fight with a fresh start. No more getting killed by the weakest enemies just because you had a hard time with the previous room. In Halo 1 this is slightly less so because of the health, but the shields still do a lot to increase the tempo in the game. Which is good.
Another feature that I haven't seen any other games of the type do is the headshot thing. Also expanded a lot upon in Halo 2. Certain weapons can kill an unshielded enemy with one headshot, no matter what enemy. In Halo 2 those weapons are the Battle Rifle, Carbine, Magnum and both the sniper weapons. Many games have extra damage to enemies for headshots, but Halo does it so very differently. You can take out the strongest Elite's shields with a plasma pistol overcharge, then just pick up the pistol and put ONE bullet in his head and he drops, despite being prevously completely unharmed, health-wise.
There's also quite a bit of open-endedness in some levels. More than you believe if you've only played the game one or two times. Especially on Assault on the Control Room and Silent Cartographer; easily my two favorite levels. There's a spot where you get a tank to drive around in and mow through everything, which is what one simply WILL do the first couple of times. But if you play it again, try snatching an enemy Ghost instead. Or even better, go on foot. Back then, it was unique for a game to do that. Usually in traditional first person shooters, if there is a vehicle around, you HAVE to take it.
Now I'll stop talking again. I need to eat something...
-
Heh, i play games so much based on gut feel so i wouldn't notice randomizing, cause i always go to every situation as it were a place i've never been to. It's like what they say about car accidents. People do more mistakes in places they know, cause they THINK they know it and then something unexpected happens. That they teach in the military. Expect the unexpected even if it was your own home.
The shield thing is good for console FPS and it was a very good idea. In Resistance they made that feature better by not filling up all the health, but rather if you lose over than a quarter of health, that's it, that quarter isn't coming back until you find a health pack. It's good to have some fear of dying in a game. The headshot thing has been pretty standard for ages. I think i've seen it at least as far back as Shogo way before Halo. Score a critical on an enemy on any weapon and it either kills or does a whole lot of damage.
The one thing that does bring up some kind of emotion in halo2 is the soundtrack, it's awesome. Everything else is kinda umm.. how would i put it. I don't hate it or like it, it's just a complete flatline, not making me want to play it more but nothing that would make me stop it right away. I can see why it's a commercial success tho. It has a lot of appeal for young people, at least that's how i see it, since majority of halo fans i know are really young and the online players tend to be underage as well. Probably partly due to the anonymity of master chief. He won't turn away people with too much manliness or too much gayness (or just too much predefined character) like a lot of japanese gamecharacters (Dante in DMC3 and Vaan in Final Fantasy 12 for example. Personally i like them)
I'm really hoping for Halo 3 to expand on what it's established so far, in other fields than just graphics and bigger levels. Maybe it'll give a few beeps for my heart monitor :P
From other console fps games Gears of War has this level of american badassery, which is fun, at least if you play really aggressive, while Resistance has British badassery and quite original weaponry.
-

That's what they have in Halo 1 if I remember correctly, there's an indicator above that shows your 'real' health, and below it is your shield meter, if your shield is damaged (fully), your real health goes down. I think they removed that in Halo 2, however.
-
Yeah i remember that now, my bad. Gotta pick up that wireless adapter for 360 to test Halo 3 beta. I haven't played halo multiplayer before, so better be ready for getting whooped. Anyway, out of the upcoming console FPS games bioshock looks most promising as well as The Darkness. I gathered that in The Darkness you're some kind of evil bad guy doing evli bad things with these evil bad darkness things.
-
How i wish i had a xbox 360 :yell: i so wanna have halo 3! my brother just sold his Wii. i thought he was going to buy the 360 with it guess not... Car parts instead. :P

about a week ago, my friends were asking me if the metroid prime games were any good, so I showed them a video review, and they were like "damn, they still look good, even for today"
I decided to play them again, and to be honest I've forgotten a lot of both games, the memories I do have; have kinda merged, and then been kinda overwiped by metroid prime hunters.
So, I just finished Metroid Prime, such an awesome game.. a lot easier than I remembered, though to be fair I didn't play it in hard mode :P
now onto echoes :)
-
that's funny taka i had kind of the same experience (with prime 1, NOT prime 2). When it first came out I was a little underwhelmed - it was pretty but the gameplay didn't really grab me. But I sat down with it almost a year later, and WOW, what a game! Pretty easy (except for that Omega Pirate, though I think I was fighting him wrong anyways), but boy I love the atmosphere, and the art direction is phenomenal!
-
yah, omega pirate was the only boss that killed me :
I think I was just a bit under-powered, ridley and the metroid prime were a lot easier than I remembered.
and to be fair, my brothers 100% save on hard mode is still there, so I had a go at Metroid Prime and I beat.. her? on my second try :y:

quicktime comes as a standalone mate, unless i am unfamiliar with the OS you are using...
-
well, if I click to install the plug-in, it won't automatically install (because I believe mac no longer lets quicktime be a stand-alone), so I follow the manual install links, and I end up with iTunes-setup.exe :P
I did install it last time on my old C drive, and it did make those few flashes work, but I hate the way iTunes tries to take over your PC...
There are older versions of quicktime I can still download, but they probably won't make the flashes work, and VLC already plays .MOV's :P
stupid unneeded complications...

I just visited Henk Neiborg's site, wanted to view his work and was sad to see all his pixel art in his gallery has been jpeg'd :(
-
Just mailed him this,
Dear Henk,
I am one of the admins of pixelation - http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation - and having grown up with the Amiga 500 also a huge fan of your work.
Someone pointed out that a large number of the screenshots on your page are now in non-pixelperfect format. Lots of pixelartists like to study your work or sometimes when someone asks "Henk who?" we send them to your page to check on your work. Also pictures are not saveable anymore, preventing closer inspection for research or your techniques. Why all this, I wonder? Do you fear that people will steal your art? If someone really wants to steal your art they could just and most likely will open up an emulator and take screendumps there. I think I am speaking for the whole pixel-community here when I say that it would be very nice if you would restore the screenshots to their former pixely glory and perhaps also remove the save-blocker.
With highest regards,
Sven "ptoing" Ruthner
Now I need a shower and need to get in gear.
-
I have a total of 76 Nieborg pieces saved, 9 being Jpeg, however the jpeg doesn't really bother me. Its not like it totally fucked them up, just added a tonne of unneccesary colors - you can still see how its pixelled though.
I would upload them to the interweb, however if henk has taken them from his site, then im sure he doesnt want other people posting them.
-

I think the jpeg'ing may have been the doing of the website creators, though I of course, can't say that for certain.
Anyways, I try my hand at a lot of game graphics, tiles and such. So I practice a lot at making stuff tile right, like grass, walls and such. It seems Henk does a lot of stuff without really worrying about tiles, but just drawing one large image. Is that a good direction to go with when doing graphics for games nowadays, since the same limitations aren't in place anymore?
-

Was talking with ptoing earlier about this, and he thinks he can get away with soo many tiles because of the programming.
Restricting yourself to tiles will make you a better artist, technically and efficiently, regardless of whether or not it is game art. If you are specifically making game-art i'd say pus your limitations to the maximum. Most wireless games still use tiles, so it would be good practice, but if the platform allows you to save time by using other means, go for it!
-
Henk went through the whole history of video games making tile-based games so if he wants to do freeform art now, it doesn't suffer from it. He uses a lot (I'm thinking the Harry Potter game) flat planes (8x8 single color tiles) to connect busy huge iterations of buildings, trees, etc. It probably requires some smart coding.

Wow, I received no less than 2 PMs from mods, plus an extra strike for being an ass. Am I that big of an ass?
(not looking for a fight, just an honest question)
-
How would people be able to answer that since they have not read most of the posts by you we've deleted as problematic?
-
Well, if you weren't, why would you be receiving strikes and warnings?
-
i dont know.. a few weeks ago, i got a strike because i 'spammed' that i couldnt see an image... not to mention a warning because i brought my post up with new artwork..
gil: actually ive seen you as rather helpfull and active on these boards... prety much the exact oposite of an ass.. then again, i dont know what you got warned for, so i best keep my mouth shut :(
-

You got a strike for spamming around the boards adding nothing but OT, and not only because you complained about not being able to see an image. It was building up. We ignored it a couple of times and simply deleted the useless posts, but we had enough. And the warning was for shamelessly bumping your thread multiple times instead of editing your post (you don't need to double post within 2 hours).
As for how you only see helpful posts from Gil, it is pretty much because we delete all his crap posts.
-
The problem is that I don't see those posts anymore, so I can't really correct my actions. I went through some of my posts looking for jackassery (I have no doubt that what you did was correct), but since they seemed to be deleted, I couldn't really correct anything.
The only post I explicitly recall being posted and thus being deleted is a joke post where I told Eck that he was seriously out of line in the contest thread...
Ah, well, no harm done I guess. I'll try to be a bit more careful, but I would find it offensive if you would eventually ban me, since I HAVE been here for the last 4 years, and I HAVE posted tons of useful stuff too, especially on old pixelation.
I'm sorry to take this public, but I don't really want to handle something like this in PMs
-
It's not about what you did nor how you were, but what you do and are NOW.
I don't really care whether you were helpful in the past or whatever, if you behave like an asshole you will receive the same treatment as anyone else.
You are not any more special than the rest of the members, regardless how long you've been around.
Actually, esp. because you have been that long you should be aware of the way to behave. Remember what was rule #1 in the old faq?
Also, forget about trying to fix what you did, instead focus on not repeating your actions.
About being banned, it is all up to you, but be aware that next time you behave like a jerk, I won't hesitate and shoot.
-
If I get banned because of my attitude in certain posts, despite the others I make, then it will be the board's loss, not mine.
About the "NOW", if you look at this folder: http://art.game-designer.org/pixelart/edit/
You see that I have been actively giving edits and helpful comments for the last 3 months
I must say it's a bit dissapointing that I am perceived this way by the mods (and perhaps the other members?)
(again, I'm not getting angry, I'm just trying to solve the problem as adults through an open discussion, I'm trying really hard not to be an ass)
-
I do get where they're coming from Gil. I've seen a couple of your posts that appeared much more destructive than helpful to me. But I can't remember what now. It's a bit of a balance, because you obviously know what you're doing. You can be constructive, obviously. Just sometimes, for some reason, the opposite happens. Rarely, but it's happened.
I'm not sure how I feel about the upped strictness on these forums, actually. Around the same time I quit my job as a moderator here, things got a lot more... um... controlled. Which I guess is a good thing, but I find myself wondering if it's a good idea to punish people for not being helpful, or if it'd be better to somehow reward those who are.
But honestly, I don't think it's that big of a problem. People just need someone who can jump in now and then and always have awesome advice. That keeps other members on their toes and make them much more willing to help, as well. Pep used to be good at it, I remember. Helm's doing a good job now, but it's not quite enough.
I really do wish I had the time and focus to manage constructive criticism as much as I used to on the old boards. It's all a positive spiral. Once enough prople get comment-happy enough, more will join in on it.
-
honestly, i dont see how making an ot post takes anything from the topic. personally, i rather liked the more loose, laid back feel i had when i came here to browse a while back (thinking about it, yeah probably about the time when rox was still a mod). now when i come, and i feel like its more along the lines of you 'MUST CRITIQUE OR DONT POST'. theres not much room for just 'shooting the breese' or just posting, chating with pixelers simply because you can. then again, its not my forum, and im not trying to tell you how to run it, but i think you will find me, and prehaps others too, posting less and less, with less and less art.
As for how you only see helpful posts from Gil, it is pretty much because we delete all his crap posts.
why? they may not add anything to the art, but honestly, are they really that bad that you need to delete them?
i understand that this is probably a terrible comparison, but it kinda feels like you guys are being dictators, and if we say something out of line, then you erase it.
and to change the topic because i dont really feel like reading you guys arguing anymore:
NEW QUESTION: who is your favorite mod?

NEW QUESTION: who is your favorite mod?
:hehe::n:
anywho, this conversation seems kinda out of place to me, like it always seems strange to me when a mod has to take action on a regular here, not only because I don't see it happen very often.. but it just seems kinda weird, like mods aren't quite sure how much pull they have, and member's aren't quite sure how much pull the mods should have :P
and the result is some awkward conversation like this :hehe::y:
-
I don't think I'm unhappy with the current mods. They're doing a grand job. I'm probably just a bit dissapointed that I can't make up for my temperemental posts with my other, better posts, as this means I'll probably have to skip 50% of my posts I want to make...
I tried reporting nonsense posts instead of replying to them, but that spawned another PM from the mods, telling me not to report nonsense posts. At the old pixelation I actually received several PMs thanking me for reporting them, so I was again slightly dissapointed that I couldn't keep doing that here with the new mods.
As you see, I have been actively trying to better myself the last months, only to get another strike, I'm kind of stuck here...
-
why? they may not add anything to the art, but honestly, are they really that bad that you need to delete them?
Theres no point to random chat, it just clogs up a thread, whereas i like to read artistical advice not "what eck is doing for dinner etc..."
i understand that this is probably a terrible comparison, but it kinda feels like you guys are being dictators, and if we say something out of line, then you erase it.
I don't think that the mods here are dictator like. If a post isn't helpful in any way then why should it exist? If you want to "chat to other pixellers" the introductions thread and this thread are where its at. Or you could just get their MSN's and Aims and chat in your own time!
and to change the topic because i dont really feel like reading you guys arguing anymore:
dont read it then, i would also watch what you say around here, your last post could have been taken offensively, friendly advice : take a step back and read what you have writen before you click the post button.
NEW QUESTION: who is your favorite mod?
totally unneccesary, thats like what asking "whats my favourite beer" ... there all good.
-
Get a personality transplant. ;)
Eck, you're in the topic where you can post whatever you want. I think it's unfair to the artist if your post has nothing to do with their work.
People come here for help, not for you to talk about what you had for dinner in their thread. You can discuss general things pertaining to pixel art in a topic of your own making in General Discussion. Personally, I think the system works, and I'm glad the mods enforce the rules the way they do. Gil's complaint about reporting nonsesne seems a bit strange, but I suppose it's to prevent the mods from getting 300 reports about the same thing. I know Panda is generally pretty thorough in his browsing (read: hunting).
Your question about who is our favourite mod is totally out of order, and something I would find insulting in any situation, as a mod or not. It comes off as a thinly veiled attempt to ask which one we like the least. You don't have to like them or even agree with them on every issue, but you should respect the amount of effort they put into making this community as enjoyable as possible. They don't have to make activities for us, or make banners to go with them.
-
Rox: Things haven't changed much since you left the mod team, so stop trying to make your post sound more neutral by mentioning we got strict as it has not happened at all. Also, you know we have never punished anyone for not being helpful. Not to mention that any kind of punishment has been rather rare around, overall.
Of course I do agree that pixelation would benefit from people giving awesome advice, but that's something everyone should work on, not just the mods.
eck: I'm pretty sure you have no idea when Rox stopped being a mod. As mentioned not much has changed, and things only feel strict to you because you have been warned for repeated OT posting. I don't mind a little OT here and there, but you have gone overboard. You keep posting things like "Huh, I can't see the pics" and "Yeah I agree with whoever", only smileys or simply going OT, and not only once or twice, but a lot. Maybe you should read the board rules and check how it states you should keep threads on topic.
I don't think anyone has stopped you from chatting to anyone, and if it has happened, probably it was because you did it on the wrong place.
You ask why we deleted the crap posts? To keep the boards clean and prevent any kind of arguing.
Dictators you said? You'd be banned and would have tracked you and reported your parents for forum misuse already if we were :P
-
not for you to talk about what you had for dinner in their thread.
lol i don't think that happened, i was just using it as an example. ;D
-
I was typing my reply at the same time as you were posting yours. I never actually saw yours before posting mine.
It's just a coincidence that we both used that particular exaggeration.
-
Gil's complaint about reporting nonsesne seems a bit strange, but I suppose it's to prevent the mods from getting 300 reports about the same thing. I know Panda is generally pretty thorough in his browsing (read: hunting).
Yes, that's probably it. Again, the mods are probably correct, but since I can't reply to those posts without going off-topic and I can't report them, I must ignore them, which is hard, and forces me to lessen my activity on this board.
Do not report useless stuff like you did yesterday anymore. Reports should only be for violations and serious problems, not random posts.
This was the PM about the nonsense posts, so Faceless is probably right...
-
"Huh, I can't see the pics"
See, mayhap it's me, but I don't see anything wrong with this particular one. I mean, maybe the artist needs to find a better host so's everyone can see what they made and give the critiques they're so eager to give or something.
-
ur all banned for questioning th emods!!!!
i keed, i keed. It seems like this argument is about to spiral out into the land of hypotheses though, so here are some facts!
I just checked the last four deleted posts that belong to Gil, and none of them have anything to do with seeing pics. Two are direct insults, one is chastising an offtopic post in employment (so obviously his reply is offtopic as well - BOTH were deleted), and the last is yet another completely offtopic post in employment. Gil, if you are trying to improve your online behavior, it is not working yet.
Pixelation is both a social and a critique community; however, for the sake of organization, sometimes we try to keep things separated a bit. For example, in the pixel art critique forum, users are expected to post critiques of other members' work. It's a wild idea, I know!
[EDIT - it could be reasonably and persuasively argued that a few offtopic comments here and there wouldn't hurt anything. Which is totally true! However, as mods, we need to draw a line somewhere so that critique still gets the main stage, and it quickly gets political and not-cool if we only delete SOME offtopic comments. A blanket system is much easier and that way we don't hurt anyone's feelings. So unfortunately, if you want to dump pure praise in the crits board, you must either find a fault or a suggestion, OR stick to offtopic, PMs, or IMs. Such is life! ]
There are many many ways to simply converse. There is the colored doodles thread, offtopic convo, introductions, not to mention PMs and the IM info in other user's profiles. Plus more than a few of us idle in #tigsIRC for most of the day :P This is a community, but it will only stand out and continue to be useful if we at least keep a couple areas on the board at least somewhat on topic. If this frustrates you, there is always the rest of the internet to keep you happy!
-

Yes, it is that. I can pretty much say that the current mod team is really active, and seeing a post that needs to be deleted without anyone taking action is a once in a while thing.
But also, every mod applies their own judgment when it comes to what needs to go or not, so if something stays, it might be that a mod gave it green light.
Overall I don't think it is that hard to ignore though.
About you wondering why your good posts don't make up for the bad ones, think about it this way. Good posts = helping old people cross the road, bad posts = beating old people up.
Would helping 3 granpas make up for beating 2 up? I don't think so.
If you need to burst with your temperament, make a blog or something.
"Huh, I can't see the pics"
See, mayhap it's me, but I don't see anything wrong with this particular one. I mean, maybe the artist needs to find a better host so's everyone can see what they made and give the critiques they're so eager to give or something.
Ok, you win with that (do you check the URLs individually before posting you can't see the images?) , but it doesn't justify the rest.
-
Okay, but isn't it a bit silly to ban me (hypothetically), while I'm sure that 90% of the user base doesn't mind my harsher posts popping up now and then. I AM trying to shape up, don't get me wrong, but it is still in my character to act this way, and thus proving hard to change my ways. In fact, my two strikes were given at times I was trying to protect our little community. One time when arguing with an offender that soon after left this board, and now, telling Eck he was out of line with the smilies. Two times I was not really off-topic, but rather trying to help. I just did it the wrong way...
Ah, well, in the end I'll just have to change up I guess.
Would helping 3 granpas make up for beating 2 up? I don't think so.
The analogy is incorrect, because beating up a gramps is much more of an offense than helping one is a good deed. The posting of an edit takes time, while most of my OT posts are pretty harmless.
-

I'm not sure i completely understand what you mean there, but i don't think the analogy is incorrect, as you'd still go to jail for beating 2 of them up, whether you helped more people or not. Ergo, you'd still be warned for bad posting... etc.

Hey now, I wasn't trying to do anything. And I didn't mean EXACTLY since I left. We've been at it for a while. But only after I left did I actually get a taste of it myself, when I noticed I'd managed to get a one-liner of my own removed. See, I never knew when one-liners became so serious they have to be deleted. Now having a post deleted isn't punishment, of course. It's cleaning up the forum, making it more user-friendly. But to the writer, it feels a bit like a punishment. In my case, I was commenting on a Last Ninja mock-up, saying it looked good and that I wished to see more of it because I recognized it as being Last Ninja even before I read the thread title. That post got deleted, of course. Because it's a one-liner, pretty much. But I didn't exactly feel like writing the exact same thing again, but spread out over more words, because as far as I can remember I felt I couldn't provide any useful critique to the subject.
It's not that things got strict after I left, I just happened to stumble upon it around that time. I also never suggested the mods should go at it writing more criqitue. You guys are doing an excellent job as is, you don't need more work cut out for you. I'm just trying to think of way to encourage posting more, but also writing higher quality posts. Hm, also, I think deleting one-liners might be a bad thing. It makes it much less clear to the rest of the community, even if we're all familiar with the rules, that one-liners are bad and are dealt with. If they just end up deleted, no one will know they existed in the first place and it won't really have an effect.
I was also in the middle of writing a sentence here, but someone called me and insisted on chit-chatting for half an hour while I was trying to type, so I have NO idea what it was going to say.
Oh, and grandpas... Good posts = helping them across the road, bad posts = beating them up... Umm... that's a stupid analogy. It's against the law to do something bad. Beating grandpas up, or bad posts. But the law doesn't give a crap if you DON'T do good things, helping grandpas. It also doesn't really care if you do help someone, because it's totally your choice and the law says nothing that one should help grandpas over the road. But it does specifically say that you'll be punished if you beat them up.
So uh... Yeah. Doing bad things puts a spot on the record. But doing good things won't earn you a golden star, or remove those spots. So I guess the analogy is correct... But it's still stupid.
-
The problem is that I don't see those posts anymore, so I can't really correct my actions. I went through some of my posts looking for jackassery (I have no doubt that what you did was correct), but since they seemed to be deleted, I couldn't really correct anything.
Would you guys prefer if we had a locked but visible 'deleted posts' buffer where you can see stuff like
wow pretty good i think
Off-topic but going towards topics name
i have caught them all Smiley
Eww Eboy...
First u should tell us what the hell is this ?
I am not sure what you gain from looking at the inner workings of what essentially is a routine sweep of the Pixelation floor. Just know that the critique section of the boards is agressively moderated against one-liners. I know this because I'm the one doing the most deleting. Why?
Because besides helping the original poster, a critique thread should also be considered an archive to be used by people who will a long time from now browse the forums to learn. And such a thread should read as to the point as possible. The art, the critique, the edits, the outcome. I know a lot of you like the social aspect of shooting the shit while you also do critique, and I know shifting the way this is done will take some time for everybody to readjust, but: keep the OT to the general board, and the critique to the critique board. Remember, the critique board is not just for you, it's for the people that will come after you. Keep it tidy.
If I get banned because of my attitude in certain posts, despite the others I make, then it will be the board's loss, not mine.
You are incorrect. The board is bigger than any single user. It was started by Tsugumo, and Tsugomo is not here, yet the board is. It was continued by Pep, Pep is not here, the board is. Sure, losing any active and helpful person from the boards is a loss, but the boards carry on. As long as there's lots of people that want to learn the art, and to help each other, a single brilliant contributor as much as we'll miss him, will never be above the rules of the forum.
I really do wish I had the time and focus to manage constructive criticism as much as I used to on the old boards.
I really do wish the same for you and for anybody else that was once helping people and no longer is. The only reason I don't feel bad at my position of prominent authority in Pixelation (a position I sort of stumbled to) is because I personally still do what I came here to do how many years ago: critique, learn, help.
I'm probably just a bit dissapointed that I can't make up for my temperemental posts with my other, better posts
Of course you can. Just think of it as karma to burn. Doing a good critique never goes unnoticed by the moderators. Being helpful eventually burns out strikes. However, for the purposes of simpler management, the tree strike rule is a bit draconic. You can be a wonderful user a thousand times, but if you mess up three times in a comparatively short amount of time, you're outta here. No exceptions. You have two strikes. This means: shape up, help people, and in a few months you won't have them any more. This doesn't mean that once you don't have them you can start insulting people when you feel like it though, as my experience tells me that people with strikes eventually end up banned. If you are a repeat offender, the strikes will fall faster because nobody has the patience or will give you the benefit of the doubt. Sincerily, if you find yourself getting more than the odd strike, chances are you are not approaching this board correctly on a fundamental level and need to rework your approach from there and up. In your case, you think that because you're an old user and you've been helpful in occasions, this earns you a free 'oh that gil, so endearing' pass at being obnoxious. This simply is not the case. You are not a moderator, you don't need to protect the boards by insulting people away.
As you see, I have been actively trying to better myself the last months, only to get another strike, I'm kind of stuck here...
How are you stuck? Just simply stop insulting other users, keep it to helpful critique and the strikes will burn off.
es, that's probably it. Again, the mods are probably correct, but since I can't reply to those posts without going off-topic and I can't report them, I must ignore them, which is hard, and forces me to lessen my activity on this board.
You're saying this as if flaming or trolling is the sort of activity this board considers a boon from you. It's not. That's exactly the sort of activity you should force yourself to lessen on this board. Learn to ignore. It's good. It's not up to you to keep the boards clean, it's up to the moderators, and it's a boring, thankless job but it gets done anyway.
Okay, but isn't it a bit silly to ban me (hypothetically), while I'm sure that 90% of the user base doesn't mind my harsher posts popping up now and then.
Snap out of it. It's largely disingenious to summon the support of an unverifiable and abstract majority of people and speak through them. This isn't an election by popular vote. It's a simple rule: don't be an ass.
So uh... Yeah. Doing bad things puts a spot on the record. But doing good things won't earn you a golden star, or remove those spots.
You are wrong, doing good things on this board does clean your record of strikes. from the rules: The severity of an offense is usually worth one strike on your record. Three strikes and you're out for good. Strikes wear off like karma as you do right and time passes.
That you don't know this yet you were a moderator for a period of time astounds me.

u kno wat character i wanna see in smach bros. brawl/? i want 2 play as a poemon trainter and ridlet.
-
but dude did you see the composer list? MITSUDA! Chrono's GOTTA be playable. He's just gotta!
-
smash bros, honestly not that psyched for the game, might get it, definitely not the top of my list though.
A friend of mine is making a simple little program for displaying paralax layers, it's not quite finished yet, but it's already pretty cool
(http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/4097/prntsz3.png)
you can choose the rate each layer moves, and you use your mouse to move the layers round, looks very cool in motion :y:
I'll link you guys when it's finished ;)
-
Osnap, TakaM, nice to see your game coming along. Looks friggin awesome.
And how can you not be excited for SSBB!?
Adam: Yo, dude, that would make Brawl the sickest game fucking ever. (I don't know music composers, so I wouldn't've caught any of that) They'd better have a massive army of characters when this game comes out...or even downloadable content released every so often consisting of new levels and characters and items and stuff. Can the Wii do that?
-
thanks :)
and I didn't really feel the direction they took melee from SSB, and it looks like they're advancing it in that same direction...
I dunno, if the controls feel natural this time, I'll probably get it.. hopefully samus controls well
and the composer list has gotten people pretty excited, since it's a massive list and most of them are from very popular franchises
-
i prefer melee, only because I think most of the characters are balanced better. But I tell you what, if they give fox and falco the same ridiculous abilities as they had in melee (speed + amazing upsmash + non-reflex reflect + stun + fast projectile attack) I will be a little bit disappointed...I really like to play as Fox but its just not fair most of the time. When you can knock out any character at 0% with a 4-hit combo (and can use your projectiles and speed to pull that off ALL THE TIME) then I feel like the character needs to be toned down a bit :P
-
Been a minute since I played, but weren't they lighter characters? But I agree, they're crazy tough. But I never really liked playing as them. Link has always been the beastliest...but Pit might change that...
-
Yeah fox was very light, falco somewhat less so (but slightly slower), but it just doesn't matter much. They have so much offense stacked on their side, plus the reflect shield, that it doesn't seem to matter much. When you can approach a character at 0%, do the reflect-shield stun, then upsmash, upsmash, jump upsmash and they DIE even on hyrule temple? That's just over the top! Err, well literally even :P
Yeah I'm way excited for pit, even more excited for zero suit samus, in hopes that she will float somewhat less than regular samus...not to mention SOLID SNAKE....bleeaargh I need to make my life's fortune before that game comes out because after that, bye bye productivity. SSB Brawl: The Job And Marriage Destroyer Chronicles!
Can you imagine...if they put Chrono in, you KNOW they would put in Dual Techniques during team play...
EDIT - heh, I typed "slow" instead of "so" in the first sentence there. It's official: ITS TIME FOR BED.
-
but dude did you see the composer list? MITSUDA! Chrono's GOTTA be playable. He's just gotta!
Nintendo recently acquired Monolith soft, which was founded by people who left square. These same people made(or were involved in making) Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears and Xenosaga. Mitsuda composed music for all of these games. So i guess it's possible that Monolith characters from Chrono, Xeno or Baten kaitos series could appear in brawl. Having Crono, Serge, Fei, Kos-Mos, Shion or Kalas as a playable character would surely make me get the game.

Well, it was just a random example, but it works.
And actually we haven't punished him yet, he got his second and third chance already, yet he hasn't changed much.
Also he was wondering how his good posts don't make up for the bad ones, but it doesn't work like that when 50% of them are good and the other 50% are bad.
Doing good things will boost your karma (even though there is no proper system, we do notice who helps etc) and that will clean your strikes etc, but only works if you only keep behaving. If you alternate good and bad actions, it won't lead you anywhere.
Earning a bad reputation is something that could happen in a matter of seconds, but earning a good one back takes hard work.
Not only in pixelation, but everywhere.
But anyway, I'll leave all this aside. Let's hope Gil starts behaving.
As for Smash Bros, right now I got mixed feelings about it.
A part of me wants it badly being a nintendo fanboi (as Ptoing likes to call it), but at the same time (pretty much from the current lack of info) I feel like I could wait for a while without it, as the Melee one kinda does the job right now. But I guess I'll end up getting it.
Right now I'm looking forward to a couple of DS games.
[edit]: I wanna watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqJYQ2C1-Ug&eurl= :0

SSBM was fun... but I never had anyone to play with, which kinda ruined the point. Or, well, rather, I didn't own the game. I occationally visited a friend of mine who had it.
I will buy SSBB, but seeing as I just got my 360 back, the Wii has dropped a lot on my list of priorities. I might get one for christmas. Or, next summer. The only game I really want for it is Metroid Prime 3, but I'm steadily getting less excited about it the longer I have to wait. And in September, Halo 3 shows up... so...
-
what happened to Commercial Critique and why are there no challenges anymore?
-
yeah, when's the pixelator gonna start up again?
-
That there is no CC is entirely my fault, I have been very busy the last few month with several things ;3;
-
Is pixelation ever going to get the pixelation.com/org/something url back?
-
Panda: That movie looks like just the kind of random Japanese insanity that I love. And Limit Cycle looks like it would be in the Animatrix or something.
I can wait a while for the next Pixelator, but ComCrits gotta make a comebak.

Speaking of good films, heres a good short one i saw the other day.

A nice way to spend 6 minutes.
Hello to everyone by the way.
-
Just an idea for the new pixelator, many people were saying they had a good idea for a new round so I think that if the new pixelator subscribing topic is opened people should be able to pm flaber, panda or someone else who leads the event their ideas. Then the judges can pick the best 4 ideas for the new rounds. Of course, the ideas shouldn't be posted in the topic and the ideas of the contestants shouldn't be used (or at least should be changed a bit) because then the contestants are able to prepare for it.

O'snapz, it's The Krut!!
That video is kinda scary. I was learning about Dissociative Disorders (multiple personalities) in psych just like, a couple weeks ago. We watched this video that was on like PBS or something. Man, those people are creepy. Half their personalities seem to always be little kids. And then they always seem to have another personality that like wants out. This one chick would just black out and wake up in the hospital a day later with cuts all over her arms and stuff written in her blood all over the wall. Then this other dude was a cop with like, different personalities for coppy situations (one drove better, one ran faster, one was a better negotiator and stuff.)
Seriously, though, freaky.

To quote this week's VGCats:
BIDOOF: The "Vendor Trash" Pokemon. BIDOOF is this game's RATATTA. There are eight billion of them, they suck, and nobody is going to want to trade for them. Catch one to complete your pokedex, then bury it so deep in your storage system that you'll never have to look at its stupid face again.

I know how this will sound but here it goes anyway: that people still play pokemon games challenges my perceptions of the world in novel ways.

I personally never understood the whole fascination of the Pokemon fad. Nor do I understand Yu-Gi-Oh, or whatever. I just don't get the point of these games. They make baby jesus cry. In fact, it's so horrible, that Zombie Jesus arises from his ancient tomb, with half dead skin, black "hellz angels" leather jacket, born-again/celibate prostitutes by his side, and sawed off shot gun in one hand, in the hopes that he finds every sinner and blasts their poor, frail, defenseless bodies away...Zombie Jesus the only true path to heaven, you ask? Hells yes, I say, nay sayer...
* Sinner - [sin·ner, pronounced "Sin-er"] -noun, person who engages in sinful acts; transgessor; engaging in the acts of Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh...
-
Pokemon is awesome. I plan on getting the new one for DS (officially i buy it for my little brother). Haven't really played any of the games before tho, but you can get interested in all kinds of things if you just have the right mindset and give it a chance. Like how power metal used to make me go ewwww, but whaddya know, got a few albums of masterplan and i was sold. It's also more of a social game rather than something you just do by yourself. You achieve something (train a good pokemon), then battle with your friends to find out who's better. I can't imagine anyone having fun playing pokemon without the "let me show you my pokemans" aspect.
Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, duel masters and so forth are great card games too. Just like the trading-card-games i used to play when i was little (Mutant Chronicles: Doom Troopers), except less violent and more cute.
-
I think as long as you enjoy something and are happy with it, you shouldn't really care about what others think.
Pokemon is good-ish as a game, but it is getting kinda old (and they are running out of ideas for the monsters IMO). I'm still waiting for a 3D one where you can see all the pokemon roaming around (and you can approach them to battle and all) instead of having them appear randomly in small patches of grass.
As for Yu-gi-oh, I hate how everyone looks (esp. those creepy eyes). As card game is alright, but never caught my attention. I do like card games overall, but nothing will beat Magic the Gathering for me. Oh the memories.
-
gave up on pokemon pearl
just isn't fun :-\
I really hate how gamefreaks has tried to expand the franchise, with way too many new stupid pokemon and items, and lots more stupid crap like beauty contests, online play was expected so it doesn't impress me at all.
personally, I'd take the franchise back to red/blue, pretend everything else never happened, and go from there.
no grid based movement, have other trainers 'join your party' battles arent turned based, or atleast not as slow as pokemon's battle...
another thing that I really hate is when you're in the rain, or the sunshine, every single turn in the battle it has to take 10 seconds to say "the sun is shining" or something of that nature, it seems so primitive...
battles in FFIII can be over in 10 seconds, and they look a lot better too, pokemon doesn't really have any nice sprites they want you to slow down and notice :-\
any other franchise, and gamefreaks would be a complete joke, so frustrating...
edit-
btw my birthday yesterday :hehe: *19*

3D pokemon? As in a proper adventure pokemon and not just an online arena, like the one coming for wii? That would be nice, since like 10 or so of the latest pokemon games have pretty much looked the same.
It's kind of a shame that no one plays magic anymore(at least where i live). All around perfect card game for beginners and pros alike. I wonder if there could be a good business opportunity to introduce some new card game with a more mature target audience(compared to pokemon). Maybe could gather all the old nerds to play Magic for old times' sake.
Oh and happy Birthday .TakaM :y:
-
pokemon yellow was one of the best games created ever. the whole original concept was pretty unique, catch 150 animals with different abilities and do a few "quests" along the way. Nice simple clean graphics. Those were the days...

Yeah of course, as the RPG one. Those Colosseum ones are pointless IMO. But then again, I never owned any, so I can't really speak.
As for Magic, while all around perfect and approachable by any, the game was pretty much based on how much of it you bought. The more cards you got, the better decks you could build (the boosters weren't that cheap, and usually the premade decks were crap, so you would either spend a lot or have a crap deck) and that would throw some away. But it was a blast making totally random decks with luck based combos and beat everyone. Multi battles were pretty neat. Oh and the official competitions were fun, with all that thriller and tension around, (and after winning the whole thing I could get free money and free booster boxes heh)
I haven't played for years, and I sold most of my cards. But I still have my old deck.
But yeah overall, Magic's magic is wearing off.
I wish it would come as a DS game or something to revive some memories though.
-
Same feeling about Magic. I solve it by not playing for a few years, then jumping right back in. I just bought some Oddyssey block cards to finish an old block-themed deck, and I plan on keeping it. Same with my Tempest deck.
And Pokémon is brilliant as a game. It was a game long before it became a franchise. It just works. It's simple to get into, hard to get to the top. If you get bored, there's millions of other stuff to do. It's like a story-based sandbox game in many aspects. It's also a collector's game, which helps making it addictive. The idea of having to look for friends that play for those last final pokémon is brilliant too, and not many other games managed to pull it off in the same way.
I do agree that it gets a little stale if you played all of them and they keep adding more pokémon. Some are cool, like Slakoth/Vigoroth/Slaking, others are really lame, like Bidoof here, or that green starter pokémon that evolves into Meganium (compared to the awesome Venusaur).
I loved Fire Red/Leaf Green. The old formula with the awesome GBA graphics (I love the candy coating)
-
jeez gil, calm down..
too soon? :P
-
Pokemon is a great game.
I don't want to see it in 3d though, I would rather like to see those things fully animated beating the crap out of each other in a sideview battlesystem allowing for all pokemon to participate the fight (that 1v1/2v2 is really lame and makes no sense).
That's technically absolutely doable.
Especially on that DS thing.
But instead they keep and keep on adding new critters in every new game whie adding nothing really new.
The abilities and holdable items in gold/silver were a good start but that was about it innovation wise.
Oh yeah and the TV show is crap.
-
Magic is indeed awesome. Going to a tech school, there are plenty of people around who play; I'd estimate that at least half of the people there play or have played. Due to cost of cards, I'm a fan of casual play or limited events; booster drafts and sealed are fun because they create a relatively level playing field. Everyone has the same chance to open a Damnation or Akroma, no matter how much experience or money you have.
-
jeez gil, calm down..

I think he was referring to the past issues/comments you made in the past, that turned into small arguments. You know, you say something, it isn't received well by so and so, and people ask you to calm down and what not (not pointing fingers as to whose fault it was, anyhow...).
By the by, noticed the new avvy, there Gil. Nice to see an animation. However, I don't quite understand what he's doing. Is he like, quickly transporting himself behind an invisible opponent, pulling off a 2 hit combo, or something?
-
What what what? New ava? I don't see any animation :0
-
It's a quick animation I did, but I'm not sure where to take it yet.
It's basically a 2 hit combo, and then a teleport away to avoid a counter move...
-
man, I was sitting there for ages staring at the little dude with the orange shirt, waiting for him to move
then I cleared my cache :P
-
I guess I don't have the collector gene at all.

All card trading games are the spawn of the devil, be it Magic, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh ALL OF THEM!!!!
I played Magic for quite some time when it was still newish, so I know what I am talking about. They just make you buy those little crap packs and you get lot's of doubles and then you need to find people to trade, but noone wants cards which are massively in the wild anyway. It's all a scheme to milk money from kids.
A guy I know who owns a comicshop told me that he does not sell them because they are evil, and there have been several cases of kids beating up other kids over Pokemon cards. Like beat a kid up who has a good card and steal it from them. I think it is superawesome of him not to sell tradingcards because of that.
So to conclude : Tradingcards = evil, videogames based on tradingcards, not quite as evil, still made to milk kids. :n:
-
Nearly every single game, be it trading card games, computer games, bord games are made for milking out people on money these days. This world is about money, nearly everything is about money, money, money, money.
Off course they take money from you if you buy trading card games. I play Magic, but I barelly ever trade em, I only use em to play the actuall game.
I only trade something when I see something someone else has that I want in my deck. And that's occured about 3 times in 2 years.
I do think Yu-gi-oh and Pokemon are worse then Magic, cause they also have made action figures, cups, underpants, bed sheets and what not, and also have cartoons to make you think you can actually do it. While Magic doesn't have most of those. Magic is just alot less kiddie then yu-gi-oh and Pokemon.
-
The difference is something which involves a constant expenditure of funds to keep fun, like Magic, or WoW and something which is an one-off purchase like most computer games. Yes they still are part of the market and the market's point is the circulation of money. One is more insidious than the other though, and rests upon hooking someone like an addict to their choice of entertainment and milking them until they're a dry husk only capable of uttering 'I tap my eight green lands and summon legendary beast'.
-
HAHAHA, could not have said it better myself. I salute thee, Helm!
-
If people want something they buy it and are happy. If it's too expensive or not fun they don't buy it. Some people buy cigarettes, a lot of them. Some buy pokemon cards or maybe a videogame now and then (you still can't get infinite fun with just one game). You get more funtime with more cards you buy and the same goes for buying new videogames. After the obligatory expenses, what is the function of money? To get something fun.
Some kid beating up another for cards is just due to a one twisted kid. I've never seen pokemon do evil. The kids are always happy showing their pokemans. Someone might get angry now and then if they fail hard, but that's life, can't always win.
If it's a scheme it's definatelly not hurting anyone. Kids are happy, schemers are happy. If parents/kids get unhappy they don't buy the cards anymore.
-
Not for me Helm, I've actually just quit playing WoW, which I did play.
And I don't do Magic anymore, but I have done it.
And I never say "I tap eight lands and summon big legendary beast" Cuz my deck is Boros and it's based on little weak cheap fast things :D
-
I enjoy Pokemon as a game, though I hate where they're taking it. They're trying too hard to add more pokemon, when I think 150+some of the cooler additions from the newer versions would suffice well enough. I still like the RPG aspect of collecting and such, and it's actually surprising to not see another game do something very similar like the many GTA knock-offs. But I agree, it's a very slow game and they need to fix that, the walking is slow, the battles are slow, everything about it tests your patience. And I too, would love to see them bring it to 3D like it's been mentioned, and it's a wonder why it hasn't been yet. I can see that game bringing in a lot of money.

Some kid beating up another for cards is just due to a one twisted kid.
I used to be more clever and con them out of people. man has it really been 7 years since pokemon cards came out - i feel so old.
-
What a painful day for me, I'm mentally drained... I wish could drink alcohol with you guys.
-
Off course they take money from you if you buy trading card games. I play Magic, but I barelly ever trade em, I only use em to play the actuall game.
I only trade something when I see something someone else has that I want in my deck. And that's occured about 3 times in 2 years.
If you only traded 3 cards in 2 years, you're probably playing very casual magic. When I was playing Magic (I have restarted it last month), we had to buy and trade cards every time a new expansion came out, which was 4 times a year. And we're talking about trading a total of 30 or 40 cards each time here. If you didn't do this, you were eaten alive by the decent decks.
Unless you played white wheenie with cheap cards like me. I have this cool deck that doubles in verocity each time one of the better cards comes into play. It also costs $20 to get all the cards...
-
The last game before this i played was red.
I bought pokemon because
- i was feeling a little nostalgic
- i liked red and felt there had been a significant enough change in the series (between pearl and red :P)
- i wanted to study some of the nice tiling and the interesting use of low poly 3d for the environments
- needed a feasable acchievement, which pokemon has lots of, not like those online korean days where it takes you days to level
bidoof, specifically its evolution bibarel is one of the most useful pokemon in pearl/diamond. Specifically since it can learn so many of the HMs they have now. I keep one with me always
-

Heh, i taught my siblings (5 of them) to trade cards and make the ones i buy for them grow with interest. Since i provide for the whole bunch i'm kinda picky with the things i buy, so that's why i told them to come back with at least 2/1 ratio of valuable cards if i bought any. In the end we had over 600 cards with two extremely powerful decks with all the legendary pokemon and best trainers. I think i bought only a few starter decks and maybe 60€ worth of those smaller packs. All thanks to some salami slicing and always trading for just a tiiny bit better cards.
Froli, i'd feel like having a shot as well

imagine a pixelation gathering irl, where all the pixel folk could get smashed together from across the globe.

Well, not necessarily, you can buy tons from every new expansion and thus not needing to trade cards.
I won most of my cards via competition winning (free booster boxes, whee) so I could build most of my decks for free, and if I ever needed anything I would just get the cards individually.
As for white weenie, I was never a fan of it. For that matter I never liked mono-colored decks, kinda easy to predict overall. Black/Green or Blue/White/Green decks for me.
Uhm.. Pokemon cards, I once bought a booster pack out of curiosity, and managed to pull some 1st edition Charizard and some dude bought it from me for like 600 euro.
-
- i wanted to study some of the nice tiling and the interesting use of low poly 3d for the environments
???
whenever I play pearl, all I notice is the tiling errors and ugly sprite resizing :(
-
My weenie deck is red/white.
Has some burn damage too.
Total deck costed about 75 euros I calculated.
-
pokemon, I remember I collected those. I spend around 400 euros on those cards and they all got stolen in school :blind:
I also played magic a few years back, I had a green deck I believe. All monsters cost much mana(?) in a green deck, and I had one card that was */* with *=total amount of mana cost for all your monster card, so I always beat the crap out of everyone with that card  (we were young, we didnt know how to use instants or spells :hehe: )
I think that the card game franchise is set up pretty smart, especially pokemon. Some cards cost ofer 50 euros because they are 'rare' and shiney..whoohoo and people actually buy them! (yeah, I did that to...)
-
I think this is very important. Pokemon was a video game before it was a trading card game. The card game, much like the shows and movie, was appended once it was discovered how successful the game was. Trash the cards and the culture and the shows and the movies all you want (and the non-gamefreak games) but deep down there is a really fun little RPG at the heart of the thing, regardless of the morality of spinning it into an industry!
-
Adam is right! It's just an RPG that lets you collect pets and it has really cool elemental damage tables, and that's what makes it fun, not the franchise...
-
I tried (flashcards are great!) Diamond and realised that it's just a pointless rehash of the same old game. If I wanted to play a pokemon game I'd play red, atleast it has nostalgic value to me.
-
Aw damn, don't start with the card game thing... I totally miss Duel Masters...
I only know two people who play that game. One of them is me, and the other is my friend who currently lives so far away I've only seen him once in the past six months. The last time I took out my deck just to feel the cards in my hands was.. yesterday.
I've looked at an astonishing amount of trading card games in my years. And they all looked like blasphemy to me. But I really fell for Duel Masters. It's simple enough to never ever have to worry about what the rules say about a situation, but it's complex enough to be incredibly fun. It's much much deeper than one would ever imagine, despite the simple rules. And yet it manages to stay very balanced, except for a select couple of cards or so.
I wanna play Duel Masters...
-
closest I ever came to playing cards was when I was a kid, there was a card store at the mall for a couple months, I remember going in and looking at a $800 michael jordon card.
and at primary school there were these "freak cards" or something, lots of ugly looking cartoon characters, that you collect and trade just for the sake of collecting and trading
-
Can we get a mother-****-ng avatar option up in here? Seriously though, when is that gonna be fixed? :|
-
Only card game I know how to play is Uno.
Screw the rest.
On the Pokemon thing, I was never a huge fan of the games, except maybe I played them a couple times, thought "This ain't bad, but what's the big deal?"
But now that my brother got Pkmn Diamond, I can't put it down. It's pretty much the first pokemon game I've ever played beyond the first area.
But I super ditto the want for a 3d pokemon game.
AFAIK, the pokemon cartoon was one of the few shows I've ever watched where the characters had a reason for yelling out the moves.
I dislike Yu-gi-bitch because the main character has frightening eyes, from the 5 minutes I've seen, he also has split personality disorder, and they have those things on their arms. I know nothing about the actual card game, and don't want to cuz I'm jack like dat.
But now I really don't like much any anime any more any way.
Except Avatar, and I'm not sure if that would count.
Anyone else think Avatar is a beastly-awesome show, and can't wait for the next season?
-

I have no clue where goat is, he hasn't been on for about a month. So maybe we will install the forum software from scratch instead of having him patching and fixing.
But for that we'll have to test it and all, and since May/June are rather busy months, it might take a while, but it will be fixed eventually.
Except Avatar, and I'm not sure if that would count.
Anyone else think Avatar is a beastly-awesome show, and can't wait for the next season?
It is quite entertaining, and I do watch it from time to time (though I guess here in Europe we are having all the broadcasting late and all) but yeah, neat.
The whole thing reminds me of the Geomancers that appear in FF3 DS (which I'm hooked to right now)
Oh, oh and Tickets to Japan GET! *holds them the Link way*

Hehe you might like this version of Yugioh, Ygo the abridge series

Yeah, Avatar is awesome. I'm also anticipating the next season. It's just that great.
-
We're talking about cartoons now? OKAY!
I love Duel Masters, the animated show, also! Exactly everyone seems to hate it, but they're all just taking it too seriously. It's so very obvious that, aside from the subtle advertizing the card game by introducing new awesome cards every time a new card set is released, it's making fun of itself and every other anime that has anything to do with playing with cards or fighting monsters.
And unlike YGO, all the cards and functions in the Duel Masters cartoon exist for real. They are playing with the actual game rules. Which also makes it more fun if you just take it as a parody, when the onlookers go like "OMG! HE BLOCKED HIS ATTACK!!", because that's such a basic function of one of the two monster types that... if you didn't expect it, you have to be stupid. Which they all are. So it's funny.
-
I always hated the "shade" lines(stuff you usually see in sketches to substitute for shading) they used on the animations in Yugi-oh, it was so distracting.
-

I know some of you guys are into older b&w comics and pulp art, so I wanted to let you know that I just got Vol. 1 of Xenozoic Tales, and its totally friggin sweet. That's it!
-
got a new mouse and a nice USB extension cable :D :y:
and I just gave the dog a bath, it's funny, she'll struggle for the first ten minutes, then lie back and just relax, then she plays dead and it's hard to get her out of the water
-
which is why you should get cats - they clean themselves!
-
we just gave our cats some of that stuff in their fur, we think they might have fleas, plus one of our cat's just had this big swollen thing on his jaw popped by the vet, apparently it was full of basically shit...
so now I never want to touch that cat again, our other cat is alright tho
-
I definitely think that the appeal in Pokemon is that of a collector, I mean you go around capturing these little monster things, each one with its own different abilities and a huge variety of different moves, and each one has the capability of being BOSS with hard training.
[geek]
Oh, IMO the best Pokemon games were:
Gold/Silver
+ An easy number of Pokemon to handle, much better graphics and so much cool stuff to do, plus when you beat one region, there's A WHOLE OTHER ONE. That was kickass.
- OMG, that frickin' box system was so annoying to operate ("before withdrawing a Pokemon you need to save your game...there is already a save file, is it OK to overwrite?...SAVING, DON'T TURN OFF THE POWER...You saved the game." and over again)
FireRed/LeafGreen
+ All the simplicity of the originals, plus much better graphics/gameplay than those monstrosities, Ruby and Sapphire
- Eventually you trade with Ruby and Sapphire and HAVE TO GET ALL OF THOSE STUPID POKEMON!
-
Gotta watch the cats with those fleas, they'll lick their fur and can get worms in their intestines. That's what happened to our cat when we pulled him from the streets. THAT was disgusting, and I felt so bad 'cause he was just a kitten and everyone was neglecting to touch him and just left him by himself because he'd leave little worms on you.
-
Luckily our cat has no problems. Other than having an obsession to open closed doors. If the doors are open she has no interest in going to any other place than the livingroom and hallway, but if i close some door it'll be five minutes and she'll try to get in. There's the usual cat things on top of that. You know, dropping everything from the tables and so forth.
On a completely unrelated note, just had to get this one ;D :
...or actually a whole lot of those. There was a clearance sale of the classic series cause the new transformers movie toys are coming, so in addition to a few movie bots i got a handful of classic series, which are remakes of G1 toys.
-
niiiice score huzba! the classic series was always marked up before, if they're cheap now that's a good deal :D i'll keep an eye out!

We formally request Adam to post lego-creations.
-
haha! for reals? alright, you asked for it (they're nothing compared to kumazemi or soren's work tho):
features: SNOT (studs not on top) basics
(http://adam.lastchancemedia.com/art/lego2.jpg)
features: retractable wings/landing gear for proper docking
(http://adam.lastchancemedia.com/art/lego3.jpg)
features: more SNOT, curved surfaces
If you want to see some real LEGO action though, this guy is my fav: http://www.flickr.com/photos/44124312001@N01/
-
I thought your bike destroyed everything until I saw... ROBOTS
-
Hey i think i've seen those legos of yours posted in some imageboard before. I guess you're pretty famous then. Care to share some insight on those things? Like how much parts you have, where you get them and how you approach this kind of creations. Or do you just use whatever pieces you might have? Seems like the soren guy has one BILLION lego pieces. The robots are really impressive. Most of them very poseable.
I've tried to make a mech few times but they all became very flimsy, ugly and broke easily.
-
I know some of you guys are into older b&w comics and pulp art, so I wanted to let you know that I just got Vol. 1 of Xenozoic Tales, and its totally friggin sweet. That's it!
Excellent choice, sir! Xenozoic Tales is without a doubt my all-time favourite comic book. Here's hoping Mark Schultz gets off his ass and continues with it this century..
Oh, and nice LEGO's!
-
junkboy - yeah XT kinda blew me away. I don't think you could get away with getting a comic like that published anymore...he walks such a thin line between absurdity on one side, and just plain cheesy corniness on the other, but he almost never falters. It's such a blast!
huzba - apparently a lot of Soren's designs are not particularly "solid" either - they're all legit, but they're pretty fragile. And yes, he has basically a billion pieces. I usually work on micro stuff because I don't have nearly enough pieces to have the right colors where I want them on larger designs. Plus micros are fast - more like sketches. Each of those ships only took an hour or two each. I'm a big believer in staying creative in lots of mediums, I think there's a lot of cross-pollination and new ideas that can come out of that, so I try to bust out the LEGO whenever I can to help keep those ideas fresh. I haven't actually bricked anything in a looong time though, lousy dayjob...
-
man, some of soren's stuff he's made is sick..
If I could have made some of those when I was playin with legos... holy shit lol
Probably would have had me playing with them for another year or so.
I stopped building with my massive amount of legos when I turned 15... still have em though, infact, I found something I made in a box a few days ago.
I don't think anything I ever made could compare to some of these things soren made, but I made good use of my imagination.
Adam - I had the same problem as far as colored pieces go. I often ended up using all sorts of colors to build something...
-
Im having a very difficult time trying to give out critique, also, its been a while since i wrote in-depth.
I find myself looking at a bunch of threads, where i could see stuff improved, writing half a paragraph and then deleting it.
I think i could help sometimes; In some cases the stuff that "I" think could be improved, i just re-think about them, and get to the conclusion that maybe its just a matter of style, or where they are directing the piece to....and in other cases i see some very "basic" (for lack of a better word) notions of art...you know people just getting into drawing and shit, and finding pixels as a medium.
Ive seen posts of Helm or Ptoinger with stuff like "Go draw in pencil, or study anatomy, or stick more closely to real anatomy first or... whatever" wich i agree its still valid...but....
the big ass BUT...
I still think its wrong in both cases; In one side we are excluding a group of people, that maybe have found in pixels, a medium in wich they can express themselves; we also know that in base to a particular medium, you extend and apply that particular medium knowledge to the others; hence some of the stuff you learn in pixels help you out on hand drawing, painting, and whatever.
If they chose pixels, as the medium, we shouldnt send them to fuck themselves, and learn to draw on paper first.
I think one should (hippie corny shit on its way) embrace and nature that person, that may be just either expresing themselves, or naturing a talent.
In other cases, we see people that i would dare to say, make conscious "mistakes", wich may in lots of cases make the piece look weird to some members, thus, they say "hey, you gotta change that or whatever, is weird, odd, not anatomically correct",; To me, being anatomically correct is nothing to write home about, if i wanted an exact replica, i wouldnt say go study anatomy, id say, go grab a fucking camera and take a picture.
Granted, it does play a role, but it doesnt determinate the "play". We should construct their anatomy knowledge according to their current direction/style or vision, and not building it all on top of the same ground; i think it would serve on more people with different styles and "takes" on maybe the same aspect.... In a world where everything looks like something already done...i think maybe thats the direction we should take.
Dunno, maybe im just rambling and talking nonsense....anyone else have something to share on this topic?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I had been hoping a smiley template contest like this happened so I could propose an ingenious smiley template for THE LONGEST TIME
and now I missed it because of my STUPID STUPID isp fluking on me for a whole freakin month :'(
in short :yell:

In one side we are excluding a group of people, that maybe have found in pixels, a medium in wich they can express themselves;
Totally, and more power to them. If they ask for critique however, they are saying "I value informed opinions on how I can make my art better, please give such to me". Now, most people will like proper anatomy and proper color theory and and and. I agree that some people with quirky styles, if they were to take such advice, would lose their quirkyness perhaps. In such cases, people should stick to their self-expression through pixel art and not ask for critique, but just showcase their work. Through sheer repetition of the same mistakes, the pixelation users - like any critique-based community - have created a 'good pixel art in twelve steps' sorta program. Good traditional skills, good color selection, few colors, good aa, good dithering, good animation, there you go. This is essentially cookie-cutter. However when this is applied to a user with a clear sense of personal want and a drive to better theirselves, they can both filter out what they don't need from the process, and also grow without losing themselves to the will of a forum. It's up to them. Nobody ever died from getting critique, you know?
If they chose pixels, as the medium, we shouldnt send them to fuck themselves, and learn to draw on paper first.
Pixels is just a medium. I don't send people to pencilwork because pencils are awesome, but just because they force you to deal with various fundamentals of art, like good volumetrics and such. You can get lost in the world of the few pixels and never progress as an artist macroscopically, so to speak. It really isn't a good medium on which to become a good artist! Pixels should come after traditional studies. So we're not saying 'go use your pencils because that's what you deserve' we're saying 'learn anatomy, learn volumes, learn lights, go study real life, go draw a building and a telephone' more or less. Can you draw a building in pixel art when you're not looking at it? I guess with photo reference you sorta can, but it's really good practise to go out there with a drawing pad and draw things around you from odd angles you choose, not that you found on google image search.
I think one should (hippie corny shit on its way) embrace and nature that person, that may be just either expresing themselves, or naturing a talent.
I embrace the most odd and nonsensical art you'd want. But if the artist asks me for my opinion on how to make something better, I will give them my opinion on how to make things better. Sometimes I have nothing to say (there's a lot of threads I don't reply to you'll notice) but if I do have something to say, it is usually because the artist hasn't 'sold' be with his quirky style. Perhaps you and I have different thresholds on what sort of 'quirky' art we can take. Perhaps you see something with burn-retina colors and jaggy lines and unfinished and you go 'oh how wonderful and individual this is'. Sometimes I do this as well, but not very often. You shouldn't feel like other people who have different tolerances than you are just hard-asses out to destroy individual styles. We wouldn't tell Gustav Klimt to mind his selout, man. But there aren't many Gustav Klimts around here in this forum...
In other cases, we see people that i would dare to say, make conscious "mistakes"
I'd guess in 95% of these cases where you say they're conscious choices, they're just things they tried, failed, and decided 'this is now a choice!'. Not many Klimts around...
eventhough, if someone is a Klimt and they do things 'wrong' in purpose, me or anyone else telling them we feel they're making mistakes won't really make them change their mind. If you do something 'wrong' on purpose, you've heard it all before a million times, they can tell you to do it right once more and it still won't phase you, you'll stick to your guns.
To me, being anatomically correct is nothing to write home about
Actually it's very difficult, so I'd definately write home to dad to let him know I could now draw a human being half-decently, so now I can concentrate on not having to do that anymore.
if i wanted an exact replica
There is no exact replica. You are not a photography camera. Even a photo is not reality, it is a distilment of a specific point in time, a specific point of view, under specific lighting conditions. It will never happen again just like that, it is an artistic result. Choice and intuition conspire unfathomably to create a piece of art that is as highly individual as your fingerprint. Just because someone has learned to draw anatomically correct doesn't mean he draws out leonardo vitruvian man charts. It's just an asset that makes his art easier to the eye of the viewer because they can follow the human form smoothly. They still infuse their art with their personal charges just as well as the random-unfinished-jaggy-pixel artist does.
We don't want to stifle individuality here. It's a critique board, one is asked to find potential flow-breaking errors here. Art is not science, everybody might have different opinions as to what breaks flow, but it has been documented that generic opinions do converge towards methods of construction, of color usage, of implementations of symbols that read better and convey specific moods. Most people will agree warmer colors are 'nearer' and that having secondary areas of interest complement the center-stage symbol, so on. Just because someone is trying to retain his individual eye on art doesn't mean he should knee-jerk against any of that. As I said, no matter what they do, when they sit down and choice and intuition conspire, what will result will be singular art anyway.
-
I dont know if you missunderstood or i explain like shit (prolly the latter); Obviously if we are here, its for critique what i meant was, that maybe critique should be directed toward the style a person is going for; trying to build upon that.
Why keep trying to build up art on proper anatomy....i know is a shitty example, but is the first thing that i though of : Tim burton, Nightmare before christmas is a great movie (personally) and a marvelous art direction.
Now, ive seen the sketches of that motherfucker, the guy probably doesnt know correct human anatomy, hasnt seen correct anatomy and doesnt give a fuck about it, yet some amazing shit comes out of it...
So, if tim burton would have come here years and years ago, asking for critique, i would think that maybe it would have been better telling him, dunno, build upon this and that...instead of; you know, grab an anatomy book, coz thats not how you draw humans.
"Better" is not "anatomically correct".
We are all here to improve, lets improve upon their take.
As to write home about being able to being able to draw the human body...please make sure you tell your dad, when you finally think you got there, that you are now part of the select group of 328946329874 millions and millions of people that have been capable and have being doing it for thousand of years...
Im not really in the art medium nowadays, so this doesnt apply, but i would write home and feel comfortable when i have something of mine so unique that stands on its own, because my friend...creating something new is whats priceless; there wont be another "Helm" not because he knew how to draw the human body, but because he had something unique about him in his moment, he build upon a new "current".
-
We don't know everybody's take, nor can we predict it. I'm sure Tim Burton heard 'learn anatomy' a million times, and he still did what he thought he should. Nobody suffers because we tell them avenues in which they could go to become better. If someone here posts something with bad anatomy, I will give them an anatomy crit. If they blatantly disregard this critique, hey, no biggie, obviously they are not interested in good anatomy. I learnt from trying to help them anyway.
'better' is a lot of things, one goes through a list of them, exhausting them, trying to hit on things that they feel matter. The artist takes from this whatever they desire. You're not honor-bound to take the critique that people give you. It doesn't smother your individuality to hear things you disagree with, nor does it do anything but help you to have to critically assess points of view that differ from yours. In thinking 'okay this guy says I need to learn anatomy, but I don't want to for reason x, y, z' you are progressing as an artist and as a person. If you want this to not happen, then I tell it you it never will go away as far as I'm part of pixelation. People here will get thrown at them all the steps in the 'how to become a pixel artist twelve step program' no matter who they are, as they apply to them. If they want to take something from that, good, if not, I'm sure they'll hear various highly personalized individual crits and nitpicks as they go, if they stick around and people start to come to terms with how they seem to want to work.
As to writing home about anatomy, what are you telling me? That because a lot of people are able to draw human anatomy semi-properly, I shouldn't be happy with myself when I manage this as well? And that I shouldn't try to help other people get there if they so desire? As I said before which you didn't comment on, the way I would draw a semi-correct anatomical human and the way another of these million of people you numbered would do it would be significantly different because people with traditional skill do not become clones of each other. Every piece of art is infused with the personality of their creator. Just because a lot of people have climbed a mountain doesn't mean I can take pleasure in my success when I reach the summit for myself, nor will I erect there the same flag that others did. On mine, there will be painted a pretty billy goat.
Plus, a lot of people here are trying to learn pixel art as an applied art medium. They want to get jobs, and make money from it. In this way, they *need* stuff like good anatomy and good color usage to get ahead in this field. Not everybody wants to make pixel art paintings for the sake of it, you know? Some people want to make game art.
-
I've seen very few instances on this forum in particular of people giving advice on anatomy that does not take the intended style fully into account. Well-stylized designs are rarely critiqued for straying from strict anatomical perfection. Poorly or senselessly stylized designs are frequently critiqued for anatomy because the stylization was NOT successful. The end result is not pleasing, so the best advice is "this is what people actually look like". That's not to say "this is what your art SHOULD look like," just that in stylizing there are certain aspects of proportionality and aesthetics present in good anatomy (and good stylization) that are lost in their work.
Basically, I see no reason to construe a critique of "you know, this is how people ACTUALLY look" as "this is how your art MUST look in order to be successful". And I see no reason that edits and commentary about anatomy can not still be helpful for someone trying to create a stylized design. An artist should be looking at edits and feedback, assessing what part of his artwork is clearly not working for a variety of peers, and try to address that in their own way. If the critique is about jarring anatomy, then maybe they need to alter their anatomy to be more pleasing to the eye, which usually means having stronger ROOTS in real anatomy, regardless of the final product.
Did that make sense?

You guys make good point, and please dont take as "this is what as a forum we should do", but like "this is what I the Krut-man is thinking when writing the first paragraph of a critique"...
Hah, the irony, in need C&C in my C&Cing methods.
-
Nah I think it's a really important question, and it's a pretty important issue in art period. Where do you draw the line between rules and creativity? Limitations and freedom? As for me, I'm just gonna complain when I think stuff looks bad :P
-
actually I think not having an avenue to complain makes you more willing to take things as they are. Meaning, if I had Gustav Klimt around on the forum asking for help, I probably would paint over The Kiss or something to give it a straighter spine or something, hah. As long as people ASK for help, it's one's duty to really exhaust his critical faculties and give crits and nitpicks even if they don't exactly DESTROY THE ART. Any thought is helpful, if someone is asking for thoughts.
-
I think that might be better posted in the Official OT Creativity Thread (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?PHPSESSID=0bb036357756aa7ef0a00015aa82d289&topic=2184.0), instead of here...
-
Any thought is helpful, if someone is asking for thoughts.
Hey, yeah. I like that.
-
Sometimes I get really bothered when people post 'wrong' so to speak, critique. Blatantly ignorant and in practise awful. Sometimes I post counter-critique, sometimes not. I believe in any way, the artist himself will benefit even from some bad critique because he's not supposed to be here doing whatever people tell him, but to test things out and choose for himself if a point is valid or not.
-
I definitely think that the appeal in Pokemon is that of a collector, I mean you go around capturing these little monster things, each one with its own different abilities and a huge variety of different moves, and each one has the capability of being BOSS with hard training.
FrLg had the EXACT same Gameplay as RSE... You realize this.. right?
Yes they did improve the graphics, but it's the exact same gameplay engine, else you wouldn't be able to play against someone with Ruby sapphire or emerald. They didn't change it until D/P

Sigg Jones is nice, I know one of the guys who worked on it. Had some beers with him some time ago. Should meet up again :D
And that cat thing is evil, I don't think the cat likes that and when you take the tape of again it sure would hurt the cat.
One thing I wonder tho is what would happen if you would take it on every side of the cat, would it just be totally unable to move or something?

To those who are skilled in the ways of programming:
How long have you been programming?
What language?
How old were you when you started?
How motivated?
-
Alot of the programmers I know started in the teens with VB.
The real good ones moved on to working with C++ & C# mainly, most of them have also made themselves very familiar with several ways of coding for websites... Perl, PHP, etc.
I started around 16/17, though I don't consider myself skilled, I haven't put the time and effort into it.
-
I started REALLY programming (not counting little bits of QBASIC here and there) freshman year of college, so I guess I was 18? So I've been coding for 7 years now, give or take a few months. I started with C++; my big motivation was to make games, and no matter how shitty my professors and instructors were I was gonna learn it :) it worked, I make like $50/hr freelancing now! Not allowed to say what I'm workin on tho...
-
if i were to make a figting game, with intent to sell, what would make a fighting game for you? what do you want to see in one? what would make it fun?
thanksies in advance.
-
Any thing NOT close to Mortal Kombat ( Way to massacre a great gaming genre, Midway...literally.)
In my opinion, a good Fighting game needs balance. Enough for each character to have pros and cons over each other, but not to the point where each are basically clones of each other, in different costumes. Some games suffer from over powered characters***cough**Ryu*Ken*Akuma*KOF bosses*** that make it damn near impossible for the really unique characters to even pose a challenge.
Intricate combos, and versatility to use and mix them with other signature moves, are definitely key. No button mashers though. But not too precise, where game play feels stiff.
Interactive backgrounds, that literally make or break a characters preset game plan or strategy. I'm not talking shitty break away objects that are just fixture, or eye candy. I'm talking, textures that slow the quickest character down, to make him rethink his machine gun tactics, or confined areas that force larger characters stray away from the poking game. Down hill, uphill, gravity, FUKKIN' physics, here people.
And for craps sake, a BELIEVABLE STORY LINE!!!! Far too long, I've been reading and seeing these fictional stories, that practically become ridiculous by the end of it's run. And please...stop with the anime, already. Why not adopt a new art style, for a change?
...
I just basically gave you a run down of what MY fictional fighting game is practically about. Though at the moment, I'm still building on the story portion, as it's utterly farked, plot-wise(trying to interwine as best as possible.) There's more, and I could go on, but it's past my beddy time...plus I'm trying to actually finish a big pixel art piece for once. (trying to go it alone, without any critiques as an experiment...)
-
if i were to make a figting game, with intent to sell, what would make a fighting game for you? what do you want to see in one? what would make it fun?
thanksies in advance.
balance is the most important thing.
as much as I love third strike, it's annoying when someone goes Akuma, I have to focus twice as much on parrying moves.
and i guess whats commonly referred to as play control, double tap to dash forward/backward, down-up to super jump, fake attacks etc, lots of optional little alternative moves that can help people develop different styles even with the same character
man, working on a fighting game would be a nightmare :P
edit-
oh and a kaepora style fighter, would make for some really impressive animations too ;)
-
if i were to make a figting game, with intent to sell, what would make a fighting game for you? what do you want to see in one? what would make it fun?

I'd like to see slightly down-to-earth 2D fighting game without fireballs and things, with more combos and a vast variety of characters totally different from each other. Also combos that have inputs that resemble the actual move. I think this was achieved well in DOA series. I liked limbs attached to buttons thing in Tekken too. X left hand, Y Right hand, A left leg, B right leg. Makes combos easier to do if you remember how they look in motion rather than what the button combination was.

I'd like to see a fighting game all goofy, with attacks that make you go WTF and laugh at the same time, with funky characters, and all sprinkled with neat and dynamic animations.
Screw serious ones, there are too many around already.

Any thing NOT close to Mortal Kombat ( Way to massacre a great gaming genre, Midway...literally.)
Hopefully you're talking about AFTER mk3, umk3, and mkt...
Those 3 were the best mortal kombat games in my opinion.
Ermac for the win. :P
I miss playing MKT :( I need to get some new n64 controllers somehow.
The only thing I didn't like so much about mortal kombat was how difficult it was to pull off combos, Killer Instinct was so much easier for combos... maybe too easy lol
-
The MK games were not awful, they were... mediocre. But their effect on the industry and genre was thoroughly negative.
-
eh, didn't keep millions of people from playing & loving the games though. :)
Seriously though, and some of you may hate me for saying this... but I think the SF series and other fighting games were mediocre compared to MK, at least those 3 games I listed above. That's just my opinion though.
-
Go Chambers of Shaolin! That was a good fighting game on the amiga. No fire balls, only 8 or so moves. Down to earth game except for last level (had dragons). IK+ was good too but
I wish the version i had had a mode where there was only two people fighting, not three.
-
Any fighting game that doesn't let me pull off a move consistently from the first try if I know the buttons is not doing it for me...
I need to be able to do it casually, because I hate spending three days trying to figure out the moves. Virtua Fighter 4 was pretty great in that aspect if I remember well.
-
Anyone know of any game engines Like game maker but can actually support isometric? becuase gamemaker would be way to hard for isometric.
-
thankyou for all your input everybody, it helps alot. if/ when i start making art for it ill be sure to show.
-
The only fighting game I've ever been able to play seriously is Super Smash Bros; to me it does everything right. Easy, context-sensitive controls, tons of action, and incredibly deep strategy; 3000 hours and we're still figuring out new combos and tactics! It's like playing a multiplayer platformer and 4 games of street fighter at once, only you can still tell what's going on and execute pretty amazing strategies, AND you have more moves, even tho it uses half the buttons of a regular fighter. Not to mention the whole "king of the mountain" style gameplay, versus the more traditional "you did X000 points of damage, so even if your last hit is a kick in the shin I still die" model. If you want to "kill" someone in smash bros, your last hit has to be an awesome one! no pinky toe kills here.
-
Anyone know of any game engines Like game maker but can actually support isometric? becuase gamemaker would be way to hard for isometric.
Actually, Game maker does support isometric. It can let sprites move diagonal and it lets you tile isometric.
To tile isometric tiles you only have to click one button:
You should use a normal size for your tiles (for example: 32x16) because it will act strange when you insert unusuall numbers like 41x21.
-
game maker finds isometrics very difficult to deal with for calculations of angle and distance; that's the main trouble people have with it.
-
the only reason i said "It doesnt support it" is becuase you have to specifi what the peoples depths are at each point to see if its behind the building or in front then you have to make a mask for collision checking.
-
Oh come on.
Set depth=-y, set the origins of all sprites to the lowest middle point and use a diamond shaped mask for the collisions.
Gamemaker already makes things easy enough.
-
:-[ :-[ :-[
wow how come i didnt think of that :blind:

I think, perhaps, you're looking for something like this: Slap Happy Rhythm Busters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prp6i4RHIcs) ?
It's a decent fighter with a theme similar to Jet Set Radio's. It's hella expensive if you're hoping to get it legally, however...
Personally, I'm really tired of seeing fighting games progressing (or digressing?) to a point where first hit = win. By that, I'm referring to combofests, with the recent Hokuto no Ken fighter being a very blatant example of this. I guess a good thing the game managed to do was reflect the insanity of the anime and manga series well enough, at least. Don't get me wrong, I love combos, and I love trying to find broken ones, at that. The problem is that there comes a point where it's just too much and it ruins the competitive aspect of a fighter. I'm with the others in favor of a 'down to Earth' fighter. I think it'd be interesting to see something that completely realistically simulates a fight, even more so than Virtua Fighter.

If you want to see some real LEGO action though, this guy is my fav: http://www.flickr.com/photos/44124312001@N01/
That..is.....AWESOME!!!!!! I used to be real into lego..but I lost all my small peices, and now I am left with 100000 uselss peices (they are all those really long, flat peices, which are useless for sculpture without other peices)...I miss mah legos :'(
-
Design an esoteric series of loghouses for midgets malor!
Mommy gave my lego to some kid i've met ONCE. ???
and only because he needed me to carry MY bucket of lego upstairs to his mom's car for him :mean:
-
Reminds me of the kid I gave my action figures to. I told him that if he would fuck up any piece I would totally take them all back, and that I would check again in three weeks. He protected the damn things with his life, so I gave them to him.
Another month later I came in his home and found some broken legs and arms behind a couch. Those were my damn action figures in good state he messed up. This is the reason I will never give up my old worn and broken Thundercats, those things have more than sentimental value to me...
-
You definately should have taken it all back :'(

Hey guys, is this interlaced dithering? I've been wondering about the technique for a while now and thought I might give it a try. Sorry if it's way off.
Gil, the same happened to my old skates I gave to a neighbourhood kid. It really bugged me because I learnt to makio on those old salos. D:
-
interlaced dithering? that's it, yup
i never got big in to action figures, although i had dozens of old transformers. Lego was my thing, totally still have like 9 buckets. My dad even has some from when he was a kid in the 60s
you have to specific what the peoples depths are at each point to see if its behind the building or in front then you have to make a mask for collision checking.
not typically a problem for isometric engines, since it's a prerequisit, however, if you are using GM, it tends to lag like a bitch, making the game unplayable. it's rather sad.
-
yes i knew there was going to be a problem with Iso in GM! any idea where i can get an iso engine?
-
9 buckets? curious how large those buckets are... lol
I have 2 large plastic containers that you could probably fill with about 6 gallons of liquid each, possibly a bit more... full of legos as well as various legos in other smaller buckets that were made for legos.
Lots of pirate stuff, "under water" stuff, and some space stuff.
Mixing all that together with my imagination... was damn fun. :D
-
remember the huge boxes the sets would come in? fill those back up with just legos. theres an egyptian temple box, a spaceship box, a huge alien ship box, and the robotics box, plus some others and one big bucket
-
Ya i love legos! i have 4 Huge tubs, A red Big box set, the old and awesome police boat set, the old firestation and roads set, and i have the egyptian mummy set. Oh how i love them
-
you talkin about the bigass gray/neon green space ship & one of the indiana jones sets?

That thing? heh, I wanted that, but never got it ;\
I had:
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6900_1&v=z
and:
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6915_1&v=z
From that set though. Kept them as they were for a month or so before I tore them apart and built a larger custom ship... mixed it with pieces from this actually:
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6190_1&v=z
as well as some other crap. o.O
Those were actually the last sets I ever got, back in 96/97.
Edit: Oh, had a couple from this set as well: http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6755_1&v=z
I liked the guns from that set better than the old pirate muskets. :P
-
hey i had http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6190_1&v=z (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6190_1&v=z) too! i never figured how to put it back to part after i lost the directions :(

haha, I think mine got torn up and thrown away at some point, not sure, it may still be around in one of my boxes somewhere.
You can actually probably find the directions somewhere on the net... I mean, I did find this site after all, so there is the possibility.
You can probably find any set ever made on that site.

wow thank you ;D now i have to find the pieces

LOL wow... I can't think of anything else to say... just wow

whilst vehicles and ships were fun to build, i was more of an architect. I love the medieval lego, and spent countless hours making various castles and dungeons.
This one time me and my buddy (i think he goes by artisan on these boards) covered his whole floor with a giant city. Man i miss being a kid....
-
Oh ya i had the huge ninja set too : http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6093_1&v=z (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6093_1&v=z)

That's nuts, I think the biggest building I ever made was a bit of a copy of the Bunker in Goldeneye 007... not a complete copy, but it had the basic layout. I was fortunate enough to have scored a large gray base plate (or ground.. whatever) from a friend in a trade, that allowed me to build that. I really didn't have enough ground pieces like that to build much of anything, but then even if I did, I woulda had no where to put them :P
I had most of the stuff I built just on a large desk that I had at the time... Back then I imagined having a room dedicated to a universe of legos when I have kids... who knows, maybe I will, if i ever get a big enough house and the money to afford the legos lol
-
by time im 21 and i have a house all the legos will be like $10 for the ones that came out this and last year and $0.79 for the old ones ;D
-
Can you even find the old ones anymore though?
I noticed that site I got the box shots from showed that Lego rereleased some of the sets a few years ago, but I doubt that you can find them on store shelves anymore. You would either have to find them on Ebay, special order them from Lego, or find a site that has a huge stock pile of old legos.
If anyone knows of a site that actually does have a stock pile of old legos, let me know... I may just want to build that universe (or multiverse...) one day. lol
-
every islanders, a few undersea (i recognize that set) every wild west, every OLD knights, every space, every alien, most of the treasure hunting.. the last ones i bought were those mars ones and i think some star-wars ones.
and of course there were the huge piles of misc bricks and the old ones.
I only saved the large boxes tho, the rest were recycled.
-
I doubt you have all old knight sets Adarias: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_Castle
There's some obscure stuff in there, and some of it is pretty expensive...
If you do, can I come over and play? To hell if I'm 21, I love those knight sets...
-
my friend made a replica of Helm's Deep using 2000 legos, and 100 gamoranian legos for orcs, and alot of the medievil peices of men and elves
-
Legos, I used to play with them all the time with my little brother.
I just checked ebay..I think I have over $2000 worth of legos :o Never knew it would be so expensive...
I don't understand why all the starwars stuff is so expensive though..
-
I don't understand why all the starwars stuff is so expensive though..
anything star wars is collectable.
-
anything star wars is collectable.
Indeed, all depends on how many pieces lego made of a certain thing and the you compare that number to the amount of rabid starwars fans.
-
Actually, no, I think the reason is very different.
The pieces and colors used were especially rare, which makes collectors buy up all the kits = rare to buy
There's a bunch of people, not necessarily star wars fans looking for those rare brown and orange blocks...
-
It prolly is a combination of both :)
-
man.. designing new lego sets would be such a fun job
looking at all those instruction manuals really takes me back, unfortunately before I got to any of the big pirate sets I couldnt load any more pics, assumed I was a bot :(
-
Of course. The star wars sets WERE just pretty damn popular, which ups demand quite a bit by itself. However, I think Lego made sufficient boxes to counter this. So, yeah, star wars collectors and lego collectors are both all over this...
-
wow, didn't know there were so many old knights. I have all of what wikipedia calls the "Crusaders (1984–1992)" sets that could be ordered through the old catalog my dad would get for my brother (legos, warhammer 40k, and Napoleonic figures were one of those things that started with my dad as a kid and went through my brother and then me)
-
For some reason, as a kid I kept buying aquashark stuff :0 (well.. and pirates, and some random small sets and extra basic blocks etc)
Also it was neat mixing both duplo and lego, since it would help you build things faster.
But yeah, I gave all my lego to my cousin, when moving to Japan.
-
because the aquasharks were so cool! o.O
Did you have a huge fleet of subs or somethin? lol
-
Uhm, I had 2 barracuda subs (or whatever their name was, the ones with that magnet in one arm) and about other 10-12 small aquashark sets (various models).
So yeah, quite enough for the underwater domination >:0
-
Hmm, I think I had:
3 Shark Scouts (maybe 4... not too sure...)
1 Sea Sprint 9 (mybrother also had one)
2 or 3 Spy Sharks
1 Deep Sea Predator (traded for Robo Raider... it had pieces I wanted I think)
1 Shark's Crystal Cave
1 Hydro Reef Wrecker
2 Recon Rays
My brother had:
1 Sea Creeper
1 Reacon Ray
1 Shark Scout
1 Sea Sprint 9
1 Crystal Crawler
1 Crystal Explorer Sub
In the end they all got mixed together in the same container all torn apart.
Ehm... I treated the crystals as a rare power source for the vehicles... including space exploration... o.O
...So there were always pirates or some force trying to get the crystals... erm... yeah... lol anyways... :mean:
-
all this lego talk brings back awesome memories, always building my own creations together with my brother. Yea Lego mechs own!
But those were the old legos, the new legos I think are really crap nothing really inventive, just plain and simple although I loved the Spider-man franchise.
This also reminds me of a lego animation I was working on 1,5 year ago, I nver got it finished too bad :yell:
-
Since we're talking lego - Adam's got me doing it again. Got all my lego from the attic and and built this one:

I'm such an inferior Lego-er compared to you, Opacus.
-
nice one :D i should my dodonpachi challenge entry in LEGO....
-
I feel so different...and...lonely...
I never had legos. Always with the K-nex for me. Big ball factories and rollercoasters. But Legos always seemed so boring.
-
I've had Legos in the past. They were pretty cool. Sucks though, cause my mom gave them to my little cousin. I'm sure she played with them for a total of 5 minutes. Not that I was a Lego-holic, but I always enjoyed them.
Never had a K-nex set in my life. My creative chops in enginuity are shit. Man, do any of you guys ever wish you could fly back through time to be a kid, just to divulge yourself in all the awesome toys we never knew about? Maturing blows the big one...
I think I've found my calling card: "Unmotivational speaking," for young children. I'll go around schools, and preach the truth to the young, corruptible minds, about how maturing, and getting old is way over-rated. Cherish the memories, you little rad tad misfits....CHERISH THEM(shakes fist...)
-
Man, do any of you guys ever wish you could fly back through time to be a kid, just to divulge yourself in all the awesome toys we never knew about? Maturing blows the big one...
I disagree. Now that I'm an adult I can both afford MORE toys AND I can write them off as a business expense sometimes :D Though I don't always like the looks the clerks give me when I tell them no, I don't need a gift receipt for this star wars lego set, it's for me thank you very much!
-
I feel so different...and...lonely...
I never had legos. Always with the K-nex for me. Big ball factories and rollercoasters. But Legos always seemed so boring.
I had K-nex too, a huge box filled with it.
They were neat, but somehow it always felt they would break if pulling the pieces apart too hard.
I am really nostalgic (so what >:0) and yeah at times I do wish I could go back. Not for discovering new toys though, but for reviving experiences or doing things differently.
But yeah I'm happy with how everyting is right now, being adult and all and being able to buy as many toys as I want.
And uhm I never get weird faces from clerks when I go buy toys, but from people around me :P
Ah well.
-
Always with the K-nex for me.
YES. I was a K-nex kid myself.
I found the fear of K-nex breaking to be far less distressing than the agony of trying to get 2 identical rectangular lego pieces apart.

I found the fear of K-nex breaking to be far less distressing than the agony of trying to get 2 identical rectangular lego pieces apart.
Ugh, you nailed that one on the dot for sure. That used to piss me off so bad, especially with the smaller lego sets. It would get to the point where I would start smashing them to the ground, in hopes of separating the two. I swear, once 2 rectangular pieces were put together, it's as if they created their own bonding fluid/adhesive. The Jaws of life couldn't separate those damn things.../end rant

That's why you use that nifty tool you get free with some sets.
Somehow it could pull any two pieces apart.

Yeah... they didn't make that right away though did they?
I don't think I got my first brick seperator until I was at least 12.. so until then I had to seperate them the hard way, or have my mom do it for me lol
It didn't bother me all that much.

I always found that my teeth worked quite well.
If you wedged one of your front teeth between two pieces it was a simple matter to unhinge them.
I have 5 big tubs full of lego and instruction books, but sadly they're in Australia and I won't have access to them until next February.

haha, I also used my teeth to get them apart. Thats why some of my pieces have small holes into them :P

Sort of a spider-cargo-bot type thing :)

Very cool Adam; Half-Life?

bit of HL, i always liked that cargo bot during the game intro, also more than a bit of Arne/Prometheus inspiration too :)

Cool, a FAQ page.
And a 'The Tutorials & Terminology' board in the planning sounds good to!

Even THAT didn't work in some cases.
