Title: Fallen Angel Sprite
Post by: buloght on November 26, 2006, 12:44:48 pm
Not sure, but probably lots of mistakes, the leg looks too jaggy too? Any help appreciated.

Heya!

I think it looks very nice! Though one thing I see that stands out is that his arms are a bit too large if you compare them to the rest of his body. At first it looked like the mid-body area was too short, but I think it has to do with the arms. They also reach down all the way to the knees like on a primate, sort of, so they´re a bit too long too.

A great piece though! :]

Cheers,

Lelle

Thanks for the critique :) Yeah, I always over exaggerate the upper body and arms in all my work, with smaller legs, not sure why haha. Do you think I should not do this for the future?

For this case I wanted his arms to be strong, but I didn't want to make him to overthetop, sorta trying to give him strength as in presence, angel, I'm not sure if I did it right.

Probably best to first show yourself you can create a close-to-reality anatomical model of a person in various configurations, perspectives etc (something that takes many years of practise to do well) before distorting anatomy, yes.

You are right helm, I'll do a bit more anatomy things first  :)

underlined muscly physique. I'd tone it down, personally, but hey. Maybe this will help.

That's great! Thanks for the effort, Helm, I'll learn from it.

Exaggeration is cool and sometimes needed to make a piece stand out :] I was thinking, instead of making the arms bigger to make make them look strong you could instead make them more defined. Like if you have seen any "World's Strongest Man" competition you can see they´re strong much because of their size. But also if you look at a guy like Bruce Lee or a gymnast you can also see they are very powerful because of their muscle definition. If you put Michael Jackson and Bruce Lee next to eachother(lol what a sight) they would probably have about the same thickness on their arms but guess which one would look stronger. :]

I think this piece will be totally awesome in the end by the way!

Cheers,

Lelle

SCiDT: Thanks :)

Lelle: Yes, definitely a good way to go, it would've worked better. My intention I guess was to diminish the definition in the muscles as I wanted a sharp light (almost holy) on it. Thanks for the kind words!

in a way this is similar to the way Bruce Timm does his superheroes - extreme upper bodies -
you (http://popcultureshock.com/timm/gallery/1144.jpg) know (http://popcultureshock.com/timm/gallery/1892.jpg) who (http://popcultureshock.com/timm/gallery/1668.jpg) I (http://popcultureshock.com/timm/gallery/1756.jpg) mean (http://www.popcultureshock.com/timm/gallery/) ? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Timm)

Difference being, his figure (as stylized as they maybe) do adhere to the vertical proportions... i.e. the arms tend to fall so that the fingertips hang just over half way down the thigh... where yours is past it's knees...

Nicely done though - like the pallette particularly... just need to focus on the old anatomy... and your sorted...

:)

Thank you for the kind words :) I understand what you mean. I'm gonna take Helm's advice (and yours) and get a better understanding of anatomy.

Regarding Helm's anatomy, the anatomy was teh shit, but the pose was nothing like yours. So I made a Jad-type messy large-brush edit that tried to incorporate semi-realistic anatomy and keep the pose. his head is smaller, so that looks better proportion-wise. His arms are slimmer and less gorilla-ish. his neck is raised so that he has his head high.

otherwise, I think the edit speaks for itself :] Of course I destroyed your image at the same time :0

Otherwise, I think the lighting of the piece and the details like the hair and ragged cape and so is LE SHIT. You own at it. Start owning at anatomy and start to dish out pixel-ownage, you!

Thanks jad! Your pose looks great with the improved anatomy. I have learned a valuable lesson in this thread and will seek to study anatomy as best I can  ;D Thanks for the kind help!

I was just thinking instead of redoing the whole anatomy maybe you could get away with making the legs bigger.

I really like the pallete you used and what you got done with few colors. As Jad said the cloth and hair are cool.

I just don't want to see him hunched forward like that, if he's an angel, although fallen, he should have a proud posture, I think :>
