The previous one got 888 posts, so uhm, why not have a new one.
Anyway feel free to talk about whatever crosses your mind, but remember: keep it clean, don't spam and behave.
So... there you go.
-
Wow you guys are all still alive and going hard with the pixel art hey
where the fuck have you been... any new pixels? :)
-
Second comment at least >:0
KEBAB.
-
Oh wow Opacus, if that's supposed to be some sort of mech in your avatar, time for volumetric studies!
-
Helm - Always on topic, even in the off-topic.
I second the kebab notion.
-
I think the off-topic-ness is in reference to the larger topic at hand--pixel art and critique--not the coherence of each reply to the thread....though I am a firm believer that the less on-topic the reply is, the better. :-\ But I mean, not that it really matters.

True, true. I kinda got tired yesterday, but wanted to finish it so I kinda rushed it. The line art just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
And indeed, the volume makes no sense either. I'll fix it up when I find some free time.

yes I've seen this before... I found it highly amusing that "On May 5th, 2007, Cocaine was pulled from U.S. shelves as a result of the FDA's decision that Cocaine was "illegally marketing their drink as an alternative to street drugs". " - despite the fact that there's an obvious other drink called coke which did - in fact - have cocaine in it (amongst other stuff) when it was first brewed...

And was sold in drugstores as medicine. Also Heroin was developed and sold as a cough medicine at first \o/

Say, I know I don't visit often... but does Pep still frequent the boards? If not, what became of him?
-
Pep has largely been MIA for a long while. Last we heard of him in the moderator section of the forum he said he was looking into helping solve the server situation (which was a complicated issue) but whatever he's been doing, he failed to communicate to the rest of the active moderation team through it. So we've been stagnating and answering countless PMs about 'why can't I change my avatar?!'. So after a long while, Ptoing took it upon himself to buy new serverspace, move the db and fix the problems with the forum (Adam helped and is now eating cake). This streamlined the 'chain of command' greatly as now this forum is owned by the same people that run it. This was a good time for a moderator purge from people who were no longer active in those roles, so Pep, Goat and Dan have been demodded.
As to what Pep is up to I really don't know, If he's around he can post and fill you in himself.

ARGHHHH :'( Don't you just love it when you are working on some graphics and suddenly there was a power black out. And you realize you didn't save.
-
I loved it more in highschool when you were working on an assignment in the "computer lab" and your friend would kick out the power cable.
Naturally you would retaliate and ultimately nobody would ever get anything done.
-
That is why one of my favorite features in 3dsm is autoback, so many times our projects have been saved by that holy grail of a tool. Only problem is if you forget to save the scene as and simply save it over the autoback, it will not be there for long.
(Also a reason why I picked up a UPS recently :) )

SCUBA STEVE! Are you still in Minnesota???!!!?! If so, in Stearns?!!?!?!!!1111!11!1 omg omg omg :o
But yeah, I guess I never thought that Coke actually used the idea of marketing a drug LONG before Cocaine...interesting that if a street name is used, the FDA could care less, but as soon as somebody tries to sell something with the actual drug name, they go hay-wire. Probably should keep that in mind when I start up my marajuana tea beverage...guess I should just call it Grass.... :hehe:
-
Speaking of Coca Cola, I guess all you Americans know that it's because of them that Santa Clause looks like he looks.
-
Probably for the better. If it were up to Scandinavians, he'd probably look more like this:

hurray for when my teacher deleted my account, six assignments simultaneously failed :D :y:

i once hacked a staff acount on my schools system and had some fun... until the technicians noticed some odd behaviour, and i was banned from school computers for a while...

I labeled a cd "trojan_virus.exe" (it just had a few videos for Digital production) and nearly failed the class because of it.
Ironically, we were using mac....

Maybe he's RIP? There's been a few pixelation members over the years who have passed away.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case.
He popped up online like what, 4 times? in 10 months (last time being the other day).
He hasn't given a shit about moderation duties whatsoever. All he has done during the few times he came, was comment on random stuff in the administration forum.
But alas, I guess it doesn't matter anymore.
-
That's Pep, Most of what I remember of him was him always disappearing suddenly for long periods of time, coming back for a quick second, then being gone again.
-
Pep hasn't always been like that, he carried Pixelation through a rough patch as head admin and the place owes him for that. But that doesn't excuse not doing the moderating thing as a moderator, so that's that.

So have a lot of things before before they were properly tested. Cornflakes were designed by doctors to reduce sexual activity. Tapeworms were sold in cans and swallowed to reduce weight. To cure boils, you could have a metal tank filled with radioactive material strapped to yourself. Sometimes you didn't really need a reason (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v56/SnakemanEXE/Lard.jpg) to market something.

I always want to say Strongbad when I think of the title of that movie...
-
yay prison break is back :yay:
very cool episode to kick off season 3, fight scene was especially cool
-
Oh snap, Prison Break...
It's official, I'll have no life by the end of this year. See, I used to follow Lost and Prison Break back whenever, back 'ere on Swedish TV which is inevitably a couple of weeks behind the US stuff... and all of my friends download the episodes instead... Do people have no patience at all anymore? Anyway, this fall, some of the awesomest 360 games ever are coming out. And also next year. Very soon, Halo 3 will consume all of my free time. BUT, I also just started watching Heroes which another Swedish channel decided to pick up spontaneously, and I knew I have to see it. Two episodes a week, one on wednesday and one on thursday. Yet another channel are about to start airing Eureka, which looks interesting, and also Dexter which has gotten immense praise from my classmates so I feel I need to check it out. Then Prison Break will return soon, followed by Lost... and Halo 3... and I'll officially have no spare time left at all... I hope none of those shows collide!
-
OMG, the tragedy that would ensue. /o\
-
Heroes.. I really felt they ran that show into the ground.
they had a bunch of cool characters, then they just kept introducing more and more, and they had really lame powers like super schizophrenia, and seriously, the mind reading cop was an absolute retard, I just wanted to smack him every time he 'acted' like he could read minds, every single time he leans in and sorta.. aims his brain at them.
plus there was Hiro, whose power was so much better than everyone else's, it just made everyone else worthless and the ending so stupid
-

Waiting is for suckers! There's no way I'm gonna wait for more than half a year for it to get here! A couple of weeks... Half a year.. all the same!

Been working on Twinsens catamaran and I think I'm about done.
this one was tough to make look right; fitting the hulls onto the surface of the water without them looking too awkward, enough perspective ambiguity so they didn't look broken, but not so much that the boat looked awkward next to the playing tiles.
Only thing I'm not to sure about is how Twinsen will get in, I figure you hit an invisible wall/trigger on the wharf, then twinsen automatically runs and jumps into the (open) door and sails off :)
-
One thing, but bushes and trees (well, objects overall) look lighter and more washed out the further away they are, and not the other way (like in your screenshot/mockup).
Also that catamaran looks really awkward with all those perfect angles.
-
I know that everything gets lighter the closer it is to the horizon, and I hate to sorta hide behind the style claim, Buuuuut..:
First, Twinsen is hardly a realistic game, all the sprites have little to no shading, there's plenty of unrealistic stuff going on that I've grown to love not only for it's unique look, but the interesting challenges and restrictions they've caused.
Like I said, I know the parallax layers should logically get lighter, but I think that changes the feel too much in a direction I don't want to take it
and you really think the catamaran (design?) looks awkward?
I rather like the boxy style and think it fits in well
-
I love the catamaran, but I do wonder about the parallax layers.
Still, it's your game and it looks great overall, so do what you want, but I'd at least like to see a screenshot with correct background shading.
-
I loved it more in highschool when you were working on an assignment in the "computer lab" and your friend would kick out the power cable.
Naturally you would retaliate and ultimately nobody would ever get anything done.
Freshman year of college our design teacher would do random power plug pulls. At any time, of any day of the week, he could pull out a surge protector and half the class would go out. It was a very effective way to teach us to save early and save often.
-
That's awesome, and probably was quite fun for your professor to see all your reactions.
Were people hitting ctrl+s after every key-stroke?
-
Yep, he always seemed to enjoy himself.
Man, as soon as I have an extra $7000-10,000 USD laying around I've gotta get me one of these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_(cat)).
-
Awesome avatar, pkmays.
And that's one bad ass cat!
-
if we're gonan go for hybrids do it right: Liger's are where it's at! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liger). would tear your savanah to shreads!
-
I saw a Serval at the Albuquerque zoo this summer, which is a large part of why I coveteth a Savannah so much. It was a really beautiful cat, and quite friendly with it's trainer.
But, man, those Lyger magic skills would come in handy with the ladies.

Not exactly on-topic, not exactly off topic, doesn't fit in the OT-creativity thread - Goes here, obviously.
http://bub-n-bros.sourceforge.net/
I mentioned this a long time ago; I'd redone most of the graphics for this game. More recently, I revised all graphics to a much higher standard and submitted them to the author, and the dragons / bubbles now use a 384 color palette.
Something I would have liked to have during this project is higher precision than 8bit -- the bubbles got significantly quantized because I had to manipulate the brightness curves of the greyscale originals (which had a LOT of detail/smoothness - done mainly through recursive shading with the help of a little plugin that sets FGcolor == midway between current FG and BG colors.) -- the various colored bubbles -- eg EXTEND ended up somewhat chunked:
Currently, you can see the new graphics ingame, or in two places on the website - at the bottom of the main page, and on the credits page; the other website graphics (mainly screenshots) haven't been updated yet.. Individual screenshots don't show upgrades very well.

Is there an ETA on this delightful update? Banana Nababa brought back some nice childhood boss-battling memories. I hope this remix brings the game more into the mainstream. It would make a great indie gameboy game.

The game itself is done, as far as I know, so whenever niner's done the graphics. And, according to his blog, he's a good way into the graphics, but there's a couple snags here and there. ...and that was 11 days ago, so, yeah, your guess is as good as mine.
-
OOOOOH yea, I've been meaning to compliment you about the ava too Ptoing.
the afterimage thing has obviously that pixelly appeal with the diferently colored afterimages for past and future, but there's something more about it...the way the transparent parts lag makes it seem like his limbs are moving more independently, they make him look like he moves more complexly than he does....not to mention it made his head half as wide. good job, that's an effect put to a good use
how'd you chose the two afterimage colors? I wonder if it's any special techy thing about it.
now I'm the guy with the bloated nedlessly complicated sillouethe with afterimages......hahahah, I'll have to come up with a new ava too!
-
Looks more like subpixel animation than afterimages.
-
Your mom looks like a subpixel animation.
-
Even at 1x zoom on a wide pixel monitor, it would only be regular antialiasing, not sub-pixel, since each side flickers from red to blue. If it were sub-pixel each side would stick with one colour (with the red being on the left and the blue on the right in an RGB monitor and vice versa on an BGR monitor).
-
It's afterimages :P and the colours are just choosen to look funky.
-
the head is still moving just uhhh 2? pixels over 8 frames. So isn't that like subpixel AA, but without counting any funky RGB pixel trickery.
The kind of stuff that happens here (http://www.ptoing.net/subpixel_aa.gif)
Or am i misusing the term or what?
pkmays, is there some issues or whats up with you?
-
in effect it's sub-pixel fakery, but in intent, it's just afterimages.
-
the real frames are red and blue, and where they coincide it's black, am I right?
if that's so then it's really neither afterimages or subpixel, and both at the same time. Ptoing, Can we see the old ver pretty please? =o
-
anyone seen the new family guy - star wars parody? I think they captured star wars so well, plus mixed with good ol' family guy comedy, what more could you ask for... 'cept maybe a beer and some nacho's....
-
acquiring it now feron, I think full on parodies like the star wars one is the best way to use family guy, I'm really sick of the typical episode.
I wish the whole game had that effect, that just blows my mind
-
.. What game is that? Looking sweet~
-
"Oboro Muramasa" (http://www.gametrailers.com/game/5552.html), from the same developers as odin sphere :y:
-
I wish the whole game had that effect, that just blows my mind
That trailer reminded me of one of the boss stages in Wario Ware Twisted, it featured stages from Super Mario Bros recreated in a similar way.

-
huzba, your image shows normal antialiasing. Normal aliasing and sub-pixel antialiasing are different in that the latter literally increases the horizontal display resolution by x3 in a primitive way because it treats each of the three sub-pixels separately, rather than as a whole. Normal aa is only theoretically "sub-pixel" but not literally. That's why I think it's best if the term "sub-pixel" is reserved only for what you call "funky RGB pixel trickery".
Also, "after images" = "antialiasing", by definition.
-
pkmays, you are a genius.
-
the head is still moving just uhhh 2? pixels over 8 frames. So isn't that like subpixel AA, but without counting any funky RGB pixel trickery.
That's sub-pixel animation, not sub-pixel AA. Sub-pixel AA uses components smaller than one pixel to anti-alias... in tiny ways. Sub-pixel animation uses anti-aliasing in animation to make it appear as though things are moving in increments of less than one pixel. In that regard, Ptoing's avatar does turn out to be animated in that fashion, even if it wasn't intentional.

This looks like a good addition for the ds.

So,.... I bought Halo 3 last night, and beat it tonight. Happy days. Now to re-subscribe to xbox live..
-
I still cannot understand what people see in that game, how boring.
-
eh..
I feel sorry for the people that have convinced themselves halo sucks.
I mean, I don't care about the story at all, but I can see why people do.
it's not a hugely innovative game, but it has done nice things like made bashing people with your gun a real technique and grenades a common weapon :y:
I know I'm gonna play halo3's multiplayer with my mates for many years, especially since we can watch replays and make our own arenas
-
Halo lost me when part 2 went Vista only. Part 1 is awesome though.
ZOMG 500 posts !yus!
-
Mmmm, Halo 3. I think it feels like it's missing something, actually... But I know I felt the exact same way about the first two games. And I know it'll blow me away once my friends complete it so we can play co-op together. Messing around in Forge and saved films is some of the most fun I've had with my 360 since I bought it. And you get to finish the fight. Finally. And what a way to end a trilogy, eh? Some people seemed to think Halo 3 got even more cheesy than the previous games, and thought it ruined it. Me, I couldn't be any happier. Story, so much, so fast... It's glorious!
In fact, I'm gonna go play right now. Practicing on Heroic so I'll be a bit more prepared for Legendary. I'm not like some people, I just don't rush it to get that achievement as fast as I can. When I beat Legendary, I wanna feel like I earned it. And considering how insane some fights were on Heroic, I get the feeling I'd end up trying to just rush past those bits on Legendary. That's not the way to do it.
-
That's not the way to do it.
Maybe, but if you don't tell anyone who see's it's completed.. you're in the clear. :P

I totally agree. I mean, it's a good game sure, but from the way the kids in my Animation class talk about it you'd think it was the FPS to end all FPSes. I got nothing against it, but in the end it's just another FPS to me, which is a genre I'm not too crazy about in the first place.
Edit: Oh, BTW, I wasn't talking about Halo 3 specifically. Just the Halo series. Haven't played 3 yet, so I could be wrong. Maybe it is the FPS to end all FPSes.
And why are there two roll-eye smileys to choose from in the smiley chooser?

Why so conflicted, David?
Welcome back. :-*
Stay awhile, and listen.

I agree with Xion and this guy sums up my view of halo3 pretty accuratelly.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/2304-Zero-Punctuation-Halo-3
Except co-op and online multiplayer are great... IF you play with friends. Never fancied playing with strangers... kinda feels pointless when you can't throw them with a paperball when they shoot you.

OH YOU.

Halo is a bit of a strange series. Every game in the series gets better consistently the more you play it. Some other games do that, to some degree, but usually most things get really dull by the third or fourth time you play it. Not so with either of the Halo games. There's ALWAYS stuff you haven't seen, haven't heard and haven't experienced. I found an awesome sniper spot and an exciting alternate way of taking down a troublesome enemy on the fourth level. That would be the fifth time I played said level. I'm going back to it tomorrow or the day after that. And with tens of thousands of randomly selected combat dialog from all types of enemies and allies, you will hear something you haven't heard before almost every time you play it. Also, the better you get, the more you'll want to experiment with weapon setups and tactics, and the more you experiment, the more hidden goodies you find spread around every level in the game, which in turn makes you even more willing to explore. And that makes you wanna play it again. And again, eventually.
Then you play it with friends, and it's a completely different game, entirely... Me and a friend were playing two or three levels of the first game almost every day, for almost a year. I swear. It like was an after-school tradition for us. Same levels, same time, every day for many many months, and it NEVER got boring. Halo 2 didn't have quite the same charm, but it DID have more eggs and secrets to find even when playing alone.
Halo 3 is better than Halo 2 was. Which probably means I'll be playing it for many more years, even. Especially with the sexcellent multiplayer. I've never had the chance to play Halo online until now (not counting the H3 beta), and it's extremely exciting.
In short: If you play Halo 3, it'll seem avarage. If you play it twice, it'll seem like you'll be bored of it if you play it one more time, but you'll start to understand the really complex story. If you DO play it one more time, and try a higher difficulty, you'll start to wonder if the amazement never ends. The first two games were exactly the same in that regard. Hell, I last played Halo 1 on co-op the weekend before Halo 3 was released. The first half of it was STILL incredibly fun, although it felt slighty slow and, in my case, routine. Probably because I've done it a billion times before.
-
I agree with Xion and this guy sums up my view of halo3 pretty accuratelly.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/2304-Zero-Punctuation-Halo-3
I watched all of that guy's reviews, and my brain felt really tired afterwards. He talks VERY quickly.
-
There is one thing about Halo 3 very few people make a big deal about, but to artsy types, deserves to be a big deal. The theater/saved films mode. If you like to take pictures of things, or if you've ever worked with films, or short clips, or anything like that, the saved films function is like a digital dream.
Go anywhere during your last games, slow down time, pause it completely, find one specific frame in a specific animation, find a good angle, perhaps a good background, maybe you even decided you wanted to take a screenshot and set it up during the game, then go crazy on a paused frame with the detached camera and watch lazily as your screenshots upscale to twice their native resolution (without noticable drop in quality) and upload automatically to your Bungie.net profile for all to see! If you have a Live Gold account, that is.
Here's (http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/4607/3286616fullsv3.jpg) one of those very specific frames of animation. I have no idea how I got his elbow to be in front of him like that. I think it's at the very peak of a sword swing at a really awkward angle. In any case, I love how it turned out. I could spend hours just taking screenshots of things at various angles. And then it's just a matter of downloading the hi-res one from B.net and upload it to an image host and everyone can see it! I hope other games follow this as eagerly as they followed the previous games' little shenanigans, like how Halo 1 kicked off the rechargable health popularity, and Halo 2 gave console online play a new standard. It's just an amazing thing for console games to finally be able to do. Of course, coupled with the fact that no one can cheat and get away with it anymore. Everything's always on film.

That has nothing to do with gameplay tho, that's an extra gimmick and as fun as it can be, does nothing for the gameplay (which I am not saying is bad here, have not played it)

Just watched the newest (http://www.fat-pie.com/salad8.htm) salad fingers episode which led me to this guy's (http://dyzv0r.dreamhosters.com/music.php) amazing music which you should definitely check out.

That's kinda my point, too. Halo 3 and its interaction with Bungie.net is absolutely insane, really. At any time you can go to anyone's profile and look at their ENTIRE game history, look up every kill they've ever scored, against who, during what game, when that game was, and so on. And now you can upload screenshots, videos, gametypes and films seamlessly, and download them equally seamlessly. It has nothing to do with gameplay, but it's still part of the game. It's like Bungie have built up this huge... sphere of awesome, where the game itself is just the core, and everything you can do with it fills the surrounding area and people can tap in and do crazy stuff that's totally radical, when you think how it's really just another console game... And that's what I hope more developers will try to do in the future. Not because it makes a game better, but because if the game is good, you can enjoy it on so many more levels if you can interact with it when you're not even playing it.
Especially if they have a screenshot function with automatic uploading so you can make your own photoshopped comics or "PWNED!!1" pictures and stuff like that in just a matter of minutes!
Oh, Bungie...

OT-OT: Might be a dumb question, but is it just me, or are some posts here(so far, the last posts of certain threads) coming up with a teal blue background? Wuz up wit dat?
-
Its a little bit of CSS that highlights either the oldest new post you've not read, or the precise message that someone linked you to, which is nice because unreliable browser scrolling and image loading can make it hard to tell which post is which in a link like that.
however, the blue color is ptoing's fault!!

In the top image, the bush layer is just ripped from new super mario bros, I'm playing around and seeing if I would prefer the layer to look something like that compared to the current bottom image.
what do you guys think?

blue post
-
The blue looked really good when I mocked it up you fuckers!!! BANS EVERYONE!!!
Tho I have did not sleep for like 34 hours when I made that mockup so my eyes/brain might have lost their power of judgement. Will provide a new colour soons.
-
@TakaM: I love your clean style, but after you showed the ripped mario bush in the first pic, I gotta' admit it looks a little better than the way you currently have yours pixeled. So yeah, I'd try experimenting with it, if I were you. Still looking awesome though!
@Ptoe-man: *raises hand* Um, will users be able to choose which colors newer posts will show up in? Or will you be the designator of which one color is chosen? If the first, I'd suggest Purple, Jimmy Hendrix style...

I will think of something. Also, your avatar is fucking scary. Clowns are creepy.

do you guys think we should have a misc pixel topic similar to the OT-creativity thread?
for stuff like this I don't want to make a new topic, but it doesn't feel quite right posting in here..
-
I think the OT creativity thread would be fine with your wips of your game added to it. No one I've seen thus far minds it in this thread anyway. And yeah, big improvement in my book with the background change. I'd probably add a little more lighter highlights to them, but it might be a little overkill. Great improvement, in my opinion...

Nah, post either in the OT-Creativity thread or the Colored lineart and doodles thread.
Also, about your mockup, perhaps make the trees and mountains less washed out.
While it keeps stuff where it is supposed to be, I think you went a bit overboard.

Oh, Bungie...
I can enjoy halo only if i up the difficulty and rush like a zergling on crack. This is much like how i played
gears of war and resistance. They're so one dimensional and boring otherwise, so to keep myself active while
playing i have to play so fast it becames only a test of reflexes. I don't feel engaged in those games in any other level.
Halo is much like a Michael Bay movie. It has all kinds of allright elements slapped together without making any kind
of coherent whole and without having any kind of edge. Instead all these edges are shaved off to make one bland-as-hell
movie that appeals to LARGE audiences since it really doesn't have anything particularly off-putting. A good game
gets the player engaged in other levels beyond just twitchy bulgy pop-corny. There is no intent to do otherwise either.
Halo's trying to be badass without understanding the soul of badassery. Everything is so tiringly one-dimensional it makes
me fall asleep unless i play on legendary. It has all these seemingly interesting worlds, lots of characters, different races,
but what does it matter when they don't really serve any kind of purpose? They're like a cardboard stage set that'll
fall over from the smalles gust of wind. Halo has as much spirit as a dead moth.
The marketing material on the other hand, it's full of spirit.. why is this? It's not present in the game. They're made
with the intent of evoking certain emotions, they've made with some kind of vision in mind and this is usually
thanks to some talented individuals. Some halo themed paintings by Craig Mullins have the ambience of a battlefield
present, the killing intent of barbaric enemies is oozing out, but when i play the game, it's all gone. Instead the whole
world is filled with warehouses and crates, rodent-mazes and an overall unimaginative atmosphere... or rather no
atmosphere at all. This is why Yahzee called it Captain Bland's monotonous adventure. To add to things, Halo3 gets
worse towards the end largely thanks to the level design which is what breaks the camels back by being absolutely dull(same since Oni, bad bungie).
Nothing seems to have a history, or a purpose, which is why i called it a rodent-maze . It's more like a puzzle game created
by some weird mastermind with only the one moment in mind when master chief arrives at the scene to do some fighting.
Compare this to Bioshock for example... every single room has or had a purpose, it's not there for the sake of being a room
in a level, it's there to add in to the story and atmosphere, even though it might have nothing to do with the main story.
In short, Halo3 lacks creative intent, and all the cool things are added to the end of the strings, as if it didn't
have a director, but rather "some guy" who checks the pieces don't violate each other, effectively also eliminating any delicious
complementaries. Having an awesome musical score is futile when it's not utilized to it's fullest. For creative use of music,
check out Kill Bill for example. Multiple elements are used together to create particular moods.
Essentially all the charm i see in the game is similar to that of Counter Strike, which doesn't even attempt to be epic, it's just
multiplayer game with terrorists and counter-terrorists.
The core gameplay in Halo3 is amazingly good, but that alone just doesn't do it for me(maybe if cortana was hotter?). It's a multiplayer only game as far as
i'm concerned. Otherwise it's just mediocre with lots of dollarz slapped on top, kinda lika a lot of big games today.
Now that Bungie is taking off to be independent again, i hope they come up with something completely new and original.
-
I get what you're saying, and half of it is a sign that you obviously can't enjoy Halo the way it's meant to be enjoyed. Nothing to do about that, though, I guess.
It's true that the Halo games have always been really bad at tapping into the amazingly deep story that surrounds them, but that's intentional design. It's an ACITON GAME for crying out loud. Yes, it's got some edges shaved off to appeal to a larger audience - that's why it's, like, the biggest FPS series in the world. I don't see how Halo is trying to be "badass" either. Badass is for Doom or Duke Nukem. Halo is deep and beautiful. The Chief himself is badass, but he's just one character in the middle of it all.
Do me a favor and play Halo 3 at least three times, and don't freaking rush it. Halo is MEANT to be a relatively slow game, for an FPS. That's why you have the insanely weak shields that recharge when you take cover. You're not meant to rush anything.
Everyone thinks Halo 3 is bland on their first playthrough. Most people play it again, because they know they'll like it more the second time - that's how the first two games worked as well. I didn't like Halo at all the first time I played it. I disliked Halo 2 the first couple of times. But now they stand out to me as some of the best games I've ever played. Halo 3 is the same. The second or third time through, the story will finally make sense. You'll start to find the seven hidden terminals (which each contain two seperate messages, the second set varies if you play on Legendary while reading them) which explain a huge deal of backstory. Every terminal I found made me go "Aaah!" at least once. If you want depth, you have to go deep to find it, but it's there. Also, you'll start to find new tactical opportunities that make every large battle twice as fun. For example, you know the first Scarab battle? I bet you took that one down by riding on a Mongoose and letting the marines shoot it with rockets, right? Instead, you could've stuck to high ground inside the buildings. They provide excellent cover and there are two missile pods there that let you take down the threats from a distance. Or, you could take the elevator up to the construction crane above. There's a sniper rifle there! Pick off the dudes on the Scarab from afar, then wait until it's close enough and board it by jumping onto it - no explosives necessary to destroy it that way. If you're feeling extremely gutsy, you could try to take it down externally by destroying the armor on the back, exposing the core to outside fire and taking it out without boarding it at all.
And on the last Scarab battle, you know which one I'm talking about, I managed to take out a Scarab by jumping onto it with a Warthog. Yep, there are ways to do that. Extremely quick - and extremely useful if you're playing the meta game and going for score, where time affects the end-of-level multiplier.
I haven't even bothered touching the multiplayer yet. Not even co-op. I'm still having too much fun with the campaign. On my fifth time through it now, and still finding new stuff on almost every level.
-
It's true that the Halo games have always been really bad at tapping into the amazingly deep story that surrounds them, but that's intentional design. It's an ACITON GAME for crying out loud.
What does that mean? Does HALO spend time in cutscenes? Yes. Therefore it could create a better immersive experience.
The way you defend these series of games looks at me like the way some religious people defend their faith.
I get what you're saying, and half of it is a sign that you obviously can't grasp the nature of God. Nothing to do about that, though, I guess.
You're evangelizing, Rox, and it's all about an one-dimensional high-profile shooteroid.
Do me a favor and read the bible at least three times, and don't freaking rush it. The second or third time, the story will finally make sense.
-
I don't see much point in playing slower, since there's nothing to achieve by doing that. There is no special atmosphere to be enjoyed and i'm pretty darn sure i know the full extent of the(surprisingly) run-of-the-mill scifi story that's simple enough for young gamers to "get" it. Even that yahzee guy pretty much nailed it without ever playing halo 1 or 2. So going slower would be more boredom from the unimaginative surroundings, or if you're really into it, you might get to see a grunt taking a piss.... which was actually the first ever fleeting moment i would've felt sorry to kill him. The enemies are just fps enemies, i don't feel sorry or happy for killing them and i wouldn't feel for the arbiter if he was tortured to death.
The way it's meant to be enjoyed? Should i stare at the no-purpose corridors copypasta-ed all over the place decorated with random rainbow colored lights, crates and boxes? Just add offices and we'd have a textbook example on how to NOT make levels (*cough*, f.e.a.r.) Which is kind of a funny thing, since in, say, system shock 2 you might be doing just that, staring a wall, but ALSO be too scared to turn around. Most elements in the game(system shock 2) are consciously chosen to make you feel more and more alone, disconnected from anything remotely human.
The beginning of halo3 led me to believe they had abandoned the way they've made levels up till now since Oni, but from there on it just regressed back to the old ways.
It being an ACTION GAME is nowhere near a good excuse to not create emotional moods. It can be done, but there has been no intent to even try.
Duke Nukem has mood to it and it's an action game, without cutscenes i might add... and also tits.... made of 4 pixels... uh... yeah. anyway..... Duke nukem makes me feel sick for some reason, but hey, at least there's SOME emotion caused by the game.
As for the whole tactical opportunities and so forth, the way i play presents them in a more exciting fashion than thinking over it too much, i rather decide things on the go and do them right off the bat based on gut feel. Getting pansy on a battlefield ain't fun. Using the warthog in novel ways is one of the ways to rush. Oh and i'd like the master chef to run faster... he is a super söldner afterall. Rushing might end up with more random dying, but you might get to pwn someone by jumping over them with a warthog upside down and then dropping out to melee them to death from behind rewarding you the right to yell out "PWNED", which is essentially all the fun to be had. So there, i still think it's multiplayer only since that brings more factors to the random novelty of killing enemies in different ways. Halo3 is great fun to be had nevertheless.
-
Hmm, the way I see it, there are two types of first person shooters: Quake (1), and everything else.
-
I enjoy playing Halo. I also enjoy having fun enjoying playing Halo with other people who enjoy playing Halo.
I don't mind if other people don't enjoy playing Halo. That's cool too.
-
If a game does not captivate me the first time I play it, why the fuck should I play it a second time? If I have a story and it does not deliver anything of interest, why play again to dig for and atrificially create interest. Is it because you paid good money for it and do not wanna confess to yourself it's a bit shallow?
Also I have to agree with Helm on the religion thing. You defend the thing like your whole life was built around it.
-
Remember how, pretty much, nobody ever has long winded discussions about 300 anymore?
Hype. ;)
-
I wonder who would win a fight one on one Leonidas or Master Chief no guns or bottomless pits
I'm a bit prejudiced when it comes to halo, but still, I don't have the time or have better things to do than to play through a game trice just so I can find bits and pieces to appreciate. I do want to do other things than gaming too with my life.
-
To enjoy Halo, don't even play the singleplayer. I think that's good advice.
-
I do want to do other things than gaming too with my life.
Quote for righteous size amendment.
-
What does that mean? Does HALO spend time in cutscenes? Yes. Therefore it could create a better immersive experience.
It's interesting that you brought up cutscenes, because in the making-of stuff that comes with the limited Halo 3 editions, there's some talk about the cutscenes in the game. They found gamers today really love to skip cutscenes, even cutscenes they've never seen before, and then the same people would be all confused about the rest of the game because they probably didn't even realize they missed something by skipping that cutscene. So they made an effort to compact the cutscenes in Halo 3 down so no one would want to skip them.
Halo 3 isn't so much about being revolutionizing and new and fresh as it is about being accessable. I mean, it's like... the best selling FPS ever, partly because it's good, but partly because it's accessable. If you make a game that everyone CAN play, and you make it good enough for people to spend money on, you have a game that EVERYONE plays. Games can be good without getting large audiences. Games can get large audiences without being good. I don't think Bungie's vision with Halo 3 was to make the best game ever from an artistic point of view.
And yes, I'm evangalhowever you spell that word, but I do so because Halo is NOT one-dimensional. People think it is, especially because it's got such a massive fanbase of brainlessness, but it's so far from the truth I feel compelled to try to convince people it ISN'T one-dimensional. If it was, I wouldn't have to preach about it.
Ptoing, yeah, it does seem like I'm defending Halo 3. That's not my intent, the game and its makers don't need defending. I intended my two massive walls of text to be directed at a fellow gamer; huZba. Because I felt exactly the same way he did, but then it grew on me. In the same way, it would grow on him, if he let it. That's really all I was trying to say. Worst thing is, the more I try to explain why I seem so fanboyish about Halo 3, the worse it gets. So I'm gonna stop now. Meh!
Hmm, the way I see it, there are two types of first person shooters: Quake (1), and everything else.
You've only played two shooters then? Quake and something else. I mean, games like Rainbow Six, for example, don't fit in the same category as games like Halo. And Halo doesn't fit in the same category as Quake (although in multiplayer it's a pretty close match, now). Then there's Battlefield and stuff like that. Then there's third person games that behave like first person games, like Gears of War.
-
Halo is the FF7 of FPS games.
-
FF7 is the Keanu Reeves of 2D Platforming Games.
-
FF7 is the Keanu Reeves of 2D Platforming Games.
Generic, slow witted, and extremely wooden acting, and facial expression in every movie, while some girls still go wild over him...yeah that sounds about right.
*zing*
-
Halo is the FF7 of FPS games.
what's the FF6 that all the "true FF fans" swear is better? :hehe:
-
I don't know, but true FF fans play FF. You have to be a true FF6 fan to play FF6, but your requirement of being a true FF fan is to play FF (the game without a number attached to it).
-
So, basically rox, you feel compelled to do free pr for one of the biggest selling games ever. How awful do you feel about yourself to be a non-paid employee of Bungie?
-
True FF fans play Final Fight, I believe.
-
what i meant is that both games are hugely popular sellers, and are often the first game in that genre that its fans have had exposure too. what i also mean is its ok to like or love a game, but that does not necessarily make it good.
-
You've only played two shooters then? Quake and something else. I mean, games like Rainbow Six, for example, don't fit in the same category as games like Halo. So, basically rox, you feel compelled to do free pr for one of the biggest selling games ever. How awful do you feel about yourself to be a non-paid employee of Bungie?
It's not PR, Helm. I think you're trying to analyze my intentions way too hard. I already stated quite clearly what I was trying to do. I intended to try to convince ONE person to replay a game he's already bought and played. How is that PR? It doesn't help Bungie and it doesn't help the game. I just wanted to try and increase one person's enjoyment of the game.
Besides, I wouldn't mind doing free PR for Bungie. Now that Microsoft don't own them anymore and the Halo deal is finally over, they're easily my favorite game developer. Not that they weren't before, but this just makes it better. I wish nothing but good for them in the future, and if me babbling about them somehow has a positive effect on their business, then I'm more than happy to help.
How awful do you feel about yourself from continuing to waste your time, trying to get something out of reading inbetween the lines of my posts all the time?
No. It means I really like Quake. Jeeze.
Oh. Right. Yeah. See, I would've gotten that if Helm's over-analyzation wasn't keeping me on my toes like this. It's contageous!
-
Not very awful consider I was just joking. But I do think you're wasting your time, possibly, with playing Halo 3 like, 5 times. You've posted more about this game here than you've posted critique for people in a year, am I wrong?
-
Your mom plays Fatal Fury.
When the credit card bills come in, my mom IS Fatal Fury.

hey Helm and and Ptoing and all the great pixelers. i thought i'd just give a shout for all the wonderful moments i've had because of you. Helm, when you joke, it's...not too funny. ;)
-
It's funny after the pain goes away. When you look back to it as a memory. Ah when we were young, when Rox was wasting his life advocating the awesomeness of playing Halo all day... thankfully that scissors freak accident that deprived him the functional use of both thumbs made him reconsider the preciousness of his fleeting creativity.
-
And you have to consider the irony because his post-Halo, pre-scissors, occupations consisted of performing perfect 'thumbs up' on commercials, modeling expert thumb ring displays on the shopping network, and executing flawless ring-ins on Jeopardy.
:y: er.... :sigh:

Here's something good i think, and doesn't go for halo alone, but a lot of games in general.

this is kinda random but you kno what might (might!) be nice? post edits bumping threads. no more need to double post just to get things back on the first page?
-
"Bumping is the devil, mmkay."
Even if it is post edit situation, any form of bumping seems kinda' desperate in my opinion. (unless there is really, really meaningful add on's to a thread, like an update, or more pieces to a gallery and whatnot...and even then, it's still debatable) It's always best to be patient.
-
I'm pretty sure it does. I don't think it bumps it, but it does change the thread to say that there are posts you haven't read yet. I think that's a pretty good idea.
I don't think bumping if it's from an edit is that bad, after all it's being bumped because you've most likely changed something. Though, if it gets bumped from edits, it'll be a lot harder to tell if it's a legitimate bump, I'll give you that. Though, I don't think bumping is that big of a deal anymore, the forums aren't nearly as active as they used to be(or it seems), where after a day your thread has been pushed onto the second page. Most threads stick around on the first page for a while, no matter how little attention they get.

Why don't they just hurry up and release SSMB already? I'm sick of all of this hype.

That makes me a sad panda. :-[
-
Ok hate to go all pedantosaurus but as much fun as it is to bash halo, Master Chief is not just some name they made up by combining words. It's an actual rank: Master Chief Petty Officer, which you will find here: http://www.defenselink.mil/specials/insignias/enlisted.html So while I agree that it does sound silly, it does make some measure of sense. It's basically like naming your franchise star "Lieutenant". Reasonable, but dumb.

2D Artist: <thinks> "yeah reet"
3D Artist: "thing is, when I render them to that pink mask background your so fond of all I get is these weird purply pixels around the edge of the sprites? What should I do?" :0'
2D Artist: <thinks> "drop the whole the 3dRender idea and go 2dpixel push where you can actually have control of your pixel placement and color choices at such a low level and not have to resort to the CPU deciding things for you like it's gonna know best...?" <Sez> "er... I'm stumped 3D... go ask the boss" :hehe:
few minutes later...
Boss: "WOW! Those big renders are looking great 3D...! good job there... but those small ones are a bit rough? and what's with the purple haze around the edge of them?";D

Boss: "OK, hows about this... render them to a black background, that way you get rid of that purple haze...!"
3d Artist: "OK, but what about the transparancy?" ;D
Boss: "That's easy... just photoshop it!" ;D
2d Artist: "huh?"
Boss: "Yeah! Photoshop it... and... stick a black outline on them... it'll look great... make them standout loads... Brilliant stuff there 3D..." :D (walks off pleased with himself)
2d Artist: :-\ <thinks> "genius" :'(
3d Artist: "Great... I can do that with a 1 pixel Stroke in Photoshop with a macro function and batch process the whole lot... thanks to boss I can rest easy at night!"
2d Artist: <Thinks> "yet another classic title given the hack it slap it treatment..." <Sez> "I'll get my coat" :sigh:

Sad, but true!
I think Advance Wars 2 DS goes to a similar way :(
(http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/2636/advancewars2dswheeelm7.jpg)
(Yeah, jpg, but I didn't find anything else)
I think, they call the new style modern/adult/realistic/enlargetargetgroup/makemoremoney/getridofkiddyimage/somewhat..

apparently if you see her spinning clockwise, you are right brained and apparently more creative.
anticlockwise, left brained, more logical...
can anyone see her spinning anticlockwise?
I know how I should be able to do it, but I can't..
because how her head is leaning into a clockwise spin, her shoulder follows her hand etc, I just can't read it any other way
-
I can make her spin whichever direction I want.
-
Yeah, same, I can see it both ways.
-
Looks like you put.. a lot of effort into that imaginary conversation.
not really... just years of experience.
-
Look at her shadow for a little then look up. You'll she her as going anti-clockwise then... on a very chaotic axis.
-
I can see how something like an ellipse with the top two lines of a triangle drawn on top could be interpreted either as a cone looking from below or a transparent cone looking from above. If some mark moved along the ellipse it would be rotating clockwise (viewed above) or anticlockwise (viewed below). The preference might relate to how the brain works (I'm too stupid and lazy to read pschology books). However, this animation has cues such as the chest which means the girl cannot rotate in the anticlockwise direction. If you had an animation playing backwards I bet everyone would believe it rotated anti-clockwise. Having said that, in the beginning I thought it could go both ways. Maybe the ambiguty wears off after your brain sees those visual keys such as the way the breasts are rotating.
Another test would be if asked people if they just see a random ink blot or if they see a naked chick spinning, and tell those guys they are obsessed with sex.
I wonder if a better animation to use would be a pair of scissors rotating. That way there would be ambiguity like for the centre foot due to symettry. Also a girl with breasts on her back too might work.
-
hmmmm in default I see her clockwise, but when I read that'd make me more logical I automatically saw her counterclockwise  then she switched back into clockwise...until I read Dusty's shadow advice
where'd you get her from? did you reproduce the effect in poser, or did you download it off some psychology page?
my guess as to why it works I think is how she switchs up and down, probably shifting perspectives as well...
3D Artist: "I got everything modelled and rendered and it looks great!"
2D Artist: <thinks> "yeah reet"
3D Artist: "thing is, when I render them to that pink mask background your so fond of all I get is these weird purply pixels around the edge of the sprites? What should I do?" :0'
For the record...it HAS been done the proper way, in both Oddworld's "Abe's Oddysee" and "Abe's Exhoddus" they set up an alpha channel in the sprite so all the "purply" stuff was actually translucent.

So it DOES boil down to them simply doing a slap-on job.
-

I see it both ways, but it takes me a while to switch. I just focus on the foot and make that spin the way I want to spin, and the rest follows more easily.
BTW, her head leans into the spin no matter what. It doesn't matter whether she's spinning clockwise or anticlockwise.
-
(http://www.locustleaves.com/234b.gif)
does this go counter or clockwise for you? I made this to explain the phenomenon without human figure involved. I see both exclusively clockwise.
-
That's even easier to flip.
-
That's even easier to flip.
Agreed. The first one I saw clockwise until I was told to look at the shadow. Now I can only see it counter-clockwise. :mean:
-
I actually spent a good 10 minutes looking at her, trying to figure out how to make her go counter-clockwise... I knew there had to be some sort of trick, to look at something the right way. I looked at her legs spinning for a while, and concluded it had something to do with her body moving up and down while her leg is spinning, then looked at the shadow. Maybe that's the logic in it.
-
woman is counter only for me, can't flip her, but the line is super easy to flip for me
-
saw the girl counter clockwise at first, not too difficult to flip though.
-
saw the girl counter clockwise at first, not too difficult to flip though.
Same here. But Helm's goes clockwise, so how about that. :B
-

You are weak then :P Helm's is supereasy. If you can flip the girl but not Helm's that's superodd.
-
The girl-thing is really trippy. It's almost as if it's changing on it's own, and tricking me into thinking it's an optical illusion. It's going clockwise, but when I scroll to her feet, it sometimes changes direction. Very cool.
Helm's however, I see completely different. It just looks like a metronome going back and forth with no real spinning motion....my brain is boring...
-
yeah, with the woman you can flip her by looking at her feet's shadow, or focusing on something else while the image is a little bit on the edge of your vision.
Helms can also be seen both ways but, there is a 3rd kind of movement...it's like the object is strapped with a rubber line going left and right without a full rotation.

Thanks for the lesson in advanced bitmap rendering - I am aware of alpha masks... (I have been making games since 1986) - it's a pity the production team on the DS aren't aware of this as an option... having said that... I'm pretty sure teh DS in 2D mode hasn't got alpha channels... so it's not an option AFAIK...

Quotetastic!
Almost noone is using the 2D engine anyway, most 2D things on the DS are using the 3D engine so that would be no problem. (I guess you knew this too)

I don't get it. Is this prerendered stuff and a ugly black outline or just poorly pixeled? I'm not a big fan of the overdetailed, less contrasted, desaturated background as well. Liked the first gba wars game the most, exaggerated and colorful, as it should be ;)

Hope it brings them joy :(

I'm also not liking how the mountains' lighting doesn't match up with the shadow it casts; it looks like a bloody drop-shadow.
They've obviously darkened the tone of the graphics to match the more serious story, but yet they have goofy-looking characters like this (http://uk.media.ds.ign.com/media/949/949669/img_4961761.html). He looks like he should be in a boy-band, not in an army after an apocalypse.
-
Aw come on, the SHOUNEN HERO pretty-boy is the only good thing about the graphics of that game :(
-
Can anyone help me with Pixen? Is there any way to do tiling without copy pasting, or any way to merge layers without the colors gradually changing each time?
...or is there any way to get ProMotion on a Mac..grumble grumble
-
I'm new to Mac (OSX) since a few days and I tried Pixen, too. But my mouse control was very strange and the palette function is very counterintuitive. But a few minutes ago I tried DosBox for OsX and Grafx2b, works perfectly (in fullscreenmodus). Give it a try. It has no tile features (as far as i know), but the palette feature is quite cool (except that you can't use HSV color model).
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dosbox/DOSBox-0.72_Universal.dmg.zip?download
http://pixel.scene.org/download/gfx2b965.zip
Copy both Folders into 'Applications', then you run Dosbox and a 'Z:' prompt shows up. Press [ALT]+[RETURN] (Fullscreen) type 'mount c: /applications/', type 'c:', type 'cd gfx2b' (or whatever your gfx2b folder is called) and type 'gfx2'. When you quit gfx2b, the dos prompt shows back. type 'exit' to finish your adventure ;)
-
Thanks rosse, thats a great solution. I was thinking about getting Deluxe Paint (i had a PC version once) but that paint program seems exactly the same. One weird thing for dosbox is the control F8 buttons dont work unless I'm in fullscreen mode (in case anyone else wanted to know how to increase the frameskip).
-
Doesn't seem to work on my Mac, probably because it's an Intel.
-
Strange, I have a Intel Mac too, MacBook , 2.16GHz, OS 10.4.10. Where do you have problems? Just installing (and running) DosBox or mounting c: or running gfx2b?
-
Okay, thanks, I'll try this out. Sucks I gotta use it full screen, though, otherwise its unbearably slow.
-
It just says that I am unable to archive DosBox. "Error 1: Operation not permitted".
-
I kind of thought about writing a paper on drunk electronics...like, how it would work, and why anyone should even bother. I would probably call it "The Inebriation of the Electron". And it would, of course, cover other altered states of computer-conscious....glitches, bugs, stoner computers, etc.. It would also go into a whole thing about computers creating art...like if it's possible (if every art element--line, shape, contrast, value, color, texture, etc--was converted to a variable...which is where computers shine; variables...and it was fed various facts on certain art history or lack thereof, and it was shown an object or idea to represent with an emotion/message or two, and was given its format and medium restrictions, and so on and so forth)...and just creativity presence in computers in general...But the paper would probably focus most on the comparison of the role of drugs and alcohol in a human society (leisure, exploitation, breaking social barriers, fixing ailments, 'inspiration', etc.) versus the role of inebriates in a electronic environment (circuit bending, exploitation, other software anomalies).
Heh, it's ridiculous, but it's true. :-\
-
So to all you professional (as in for a living) pixel artists out there; are you having trouble finding jobs? Cause for some reason, I am. Things have fallen into my lap in the past, and I have received jobs through recommendation by people I've worked with online, but now jobless, I am finding it quite difficult to find anything lucrative. I must've sent out at least a dozen emails with resume and portfolio, not to mention talked to people who I've worked for before. But nothing. A sudden dryness in the pixel world I suppose. I'm afraid I'll need to move more towards 3D animation or illustration to stay afloat, since I know now there are a handfull of very talented pixel artist floating around, and they seem to get all the lucrative gigs. And the smaller, somewhat less experienced and less skilled artists such as myself never get the light of day.
-
>Faktablad
Try a mirror @ sourceforge, maybe the download zip is corrupt.
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1
It worked perfectly on my mac (and others as well as it seems).
-
@ sonic
Pixels isn't as lucrative or as readily available as it used to be... as you say, 3d may be the way forward. Particularly if you want a career in Graphic development.
But don't give up on the pixel front, and certainly don't put yourself down - if you've been getting work in the past then you must have some level of talent?

Yeah. The only thing bugging me is how he's using a lot of gradients and stuff.
I MEAN, if he went with pure pixel style and then fleshed it out in Trixel-3D, it'd look so AWESOME :O
I hope he does some NES-themed stage or something. That would own. Seriously.
-
Yeah. The only thing bugging me is how he's using a lot of gradients and stuff.

Yaddayadda. He did not do any pixelart before afaik and he comes from more of a design background. I have to say how he did it even tho he uses shitloads of colours and gradients looks nice and consistent.
-
Fez looks wonderful!
-
yeah, I'm looking forward to Fez as well
Does anyone else think we should have a "mini-critique" thread for stuff we don't want to have to devote a thread to, stuff that perhaps only requires attention in one small/particular area? Or is the sketch/colored lineart thread for that stuff?
-
I'm sure that if you specifically ask for critique on anything you post on the OTcreativity, people will oblige
-
Yeah. The only thing bugging me is how he's using a lot of gradients and stuff.

Whoops, it came off as though I didn't totally LOVE the art style :D
I mean, I love it, but it's still bugging me, because the clash between pure pixel and 3D could have been so cool and effective. The engine they're using basically SCREAMS for it since it's rendering square 3d pixel boxes instead of simulating pixel-y art and using bitmap textures.
The way he's doing it now is the best pixel-art-with-gradients-and-PS-polish I have EVER seen though :] So I have no problems at all with it.

Street Fighter IV! No gameplay yet but enough to get me pretty excited.
-
Why do they have Fred Flintstone faces?
Why are they fighting in ink?
Why do I even care? It's gonna be 3D, and it's gonna be bad. I'd rather play a game where you drown a box full of puppies over and over again than play another Street Fighter EX.
-
SUPER INK KAME-HAME-HADOUKEN!!!
... Cool trailer, though the art-style kind of killed the visibility of everything. Too bad.
-
I would not bet on it by if I would have to I would say gameplay is gonna be 2D most likely. The SF fanbase is so rabid and stuff like Tekken and other real 3D fighting games play very very different, total different style. So I doubt Capcom want's to piss their fanbase of. And honestly, if they get it done with a nice artstyle in 3d, why not. Much easier for them in the long run and pleases more people. As long as the art is consistant and the game plays nice, yay. (It's not like I will play it, not a fighter game fan, just saying.)
-
Who cares about SF4 right now? 28 days until Assassin's Creed.
-
I care.
Damn it. I was hoping they wouldn't go 3d again. Sheesh. I guess the mainstream's money is the only way Capcom can keep the franchise going. Maybe they'll find an in-between and use cell shading instead of full 3d, so it will encompass a 2d aspect as well. I saw the preview, and thought the effects were okay, but the character models themselves were...BLeghhh! Ryu's face looks NON-HUMAN. Oh well, it's still a teaser, so maybe we'll get something better in the near future. I'm sure they won't release this game along with Street Fighter High Def thingy. Would be bad marketing.
I'm also hoping they end Ryu and Akuma's story arc already. They've reached legendary status, and a decision must be reached, imo. 3rd Strike's characters are good enough to stand on their own, and Alex can fulfill the lead character position (as that is what was meant to happen.) Maybe even Sakura can start getting serious with her taught skills, and even get a new design as she has aged a bit (all SF Ex characters can be considered non-canon for all I care.)....Ugh, I'm asking for too much here.
Heres to hoping this one won't bomb like the Street Fighter Ex series.
-
Like I said, who cares? It's gonna suck, so? What'll be new? Nothing, it'll just be 3D, go play Street Fighter 3 man, which has been finally emulated which means its playable on the pc, added with Kaillera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaillera) its perfect and if you don't want to use the keyboard you don't need to, just go get a controller for the pc or whatever.
Meanwhile, Assassin's Creed is something new and innovative(That will actually be good), which Capcom doesn't do enough of(Or sometimes, like with Megaman for instance, does too much of). Capcom's taking time to revamp an old 2D fighter to a crappy 3D fighter, instead of working on something that might actually be fun, like making a game similar to Dead Rising thats multiplayer. Even if Streey Fighter 4 is gonna be similar to the old gameplay, so? First off, its too early to speculate and second off its the same crap you've already played except with a controller(And controllers are not fun to use with games like Street Fighter, for me, anyways, I'd rather use a keyboard, which I actually do, heh).
-
Wow, that's like...the reason I played Super Paper Mario. Neat, though I'll never get to play it ever probably.
Suppose we need to make a trixel art critique forum now, too? :-\
-
No.
I dunno, Capcom/SNK have tried to bring 2D gameplay into a 3D engine on several occasions, but the results have always been lackluster and generally panned by gamers. Why won't the homies just keep it real?
I'd rather have them reinvent the gameplay for SF4 into something that takes advantage of 3D, rather than 2D gameplay + sidestep.
-
Because parents just don't understand...
(yeah, I'm a dork...But I agree, as 2d games rock the most ass)
-
I would not bet on it by if I would have to I would say gameplay is gonna be 2D most likely. I dunno...
I think the game will be 2D, considering that it's part of the traditional street fighter series- I'd expect them to stick with tradition, I think all the ink hints at 2D, and capcom knows their SF fanbase boycotts the 3D games
-
Anyone read German here?
I've got some legal documents from a now defunct mobile gaming company in which I don't have any idea what it says. Anyone care to give me the gist of what it says?

Oh, wait, that's such a downer. Sorry.
Okay, positive note. Things will get much better after the 7-9 month mark. And its impossible not to love them and miss them every day. Cherish it all. It happens/goes by so quickly.

Have fun parenting. ;D :y:

Congrats. Make sure to buy him lots and lots of Legos. You'll be a total failure as both a father and a human being if you don't.
Strongly seconded. There is evidence supporting the theory that giving your children lots of legos makes them grow up to be creative, wonderful people. Nothing else is needed as far as parenting goes. Just a huge pile of legos and the kid'll sort itself out.
-
Make sure to get him like...90's Legos, because now-a-days they just make a piece whenever they need something, instead of building it. ;):y:
Congrats by the way.

It's happened! A pixel artist has actually succeeded in procreating!
Congratulations, Baccaman. I'm sure you'll be a great daddy. ;D :y:

90's lego??! I grew up in the 70's - when lego was REALLY lego... I think I had tree shapes, doorways and windows and that was it... none of this new fangled stuff from the 90's... hell I remember the first lego men... :lala:
you asked for it...

The baby with no-name... Seriously we still haven't figured out what to call him...!? He arrived a week before we expected him to... I might call him Clint?
God I'm knacked... No sleep since yesterday... been up nearly 48 hours...

Awww, cute. How about Logan?
I kid. :P

hahaha crazy!! congratulations man :D i second the duplo/legos thing...craigslist is a lego candyland, especially for old stuff...and i must say, your baby looks REMARKABLY human!!

You should name him "Macho-man-Herculain-King of Vikings III, Devourer of Worlds, and Destroyer of Hades". Yeah, that fits 'em like a glove. I mean, come on. Just look at the kid:

"Fear me, for I be Macho-man-Herculain-King of Vikings III, Devourer of Worlds, and Destroyer of Hades! Rawwrrr!!"
BEWARE THE MAN WHO WEARS THE FUZZY BLUE CAR, they will say...
(but seriously, congrats on the safe delivery!)

ITS A BOY!!!
Crack open the champagne... I'm a daddy... :D
Up till 3am this morning with the missus... born at 3.08am... 8lb 3.5oz... and we're back home already... job's a guddun!
What a result!
Wow, congrats!
I wonder how it is to grow up with an awesome artist as a father. :D
Congratulations, Wolverine! :P
Have you thought about the name Mars? How about Caine?
Whoa, waitwaitwait, I thought baccaman=/=wolverine?
-
Haha, this has been brought up and shut down, Baccaman is not wolverine, even though he bears a striking resemblance.
-
Name him Jad :O
I don't know where that name came from, it just sorta popped up in my head!
-
Congrats Baccaman!
-
Dweezil.
-
we've just decided...
Theo Vincent Storm...
That'll do... I think. :D
-
I'm surprised your wife's not mad you're spending more time giving detailed specifics on how Game Gear palettes work and providing in-depth critiques than you are spending with the new baby. :P
But seriously, Theo is actually a pretty cool name in my opinion.
-
What aboot when he's in school man? He's gonna have to try pretty hard to be cool with that name.
-
Okay he's like, 3 days old, you're planning this out waaayyyy too much. My dad was expecting me to be a jock growing up to be a football player on the Broncos team and man, did that change dramatically, I now draw, play tons of video games, hate jocks and hate all sports except for boxing. Point is: Your kid will probably not turn out the way you imagine him but whatever path he goes on you should support. Also for god's sake name him something decent, like you know, Alex or Ben, yes, those are generic names but who the hell names their kid Theo Vincent Storm(I know I'm being harsh, but if he had that name, he'd be screwed through out high school)?
Now onto more important news:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dw5RUdKOOM
-
What about 'Maximus Decimus Meridius' as a good name. If it doesn't work out, just homeschool him. :y:  :y:
-
Okay seriously, off-topic isn't off-topic anymore, Baccaman should go make a thread for this so we can continue being off-topic.
-
Bully: Hey look, it's little TV. What's the ABC movie of the week this time TV? I'll tell you what it is, it's me kicking the crap out of you. It's a rerun from last week.

Better name: Vincent Thunderhammer Storm

wow... honestly that's messed up. You sound like one of those bitter kids who let people pick on him while you were in school. Do you think a name is gonna affect that at all? I don't even think this applies, I would kill for a creative name like Theo. Kinda weird having a 16 year old giving a 36 year old fathering advice... How is he "planning this out" anyway?
-
What the hell bengoshia?
I know you've been talked to a lot, and I still don't think you've really considered anything said to you, most of your responses were something like "jeez it's just the internets, relax!"
Just re-read your last two posts in this topic, you're basically telling baccaman how to be a father, that you think the name he chose sucks, that a youtube video is more worthy of discussion, and then to get out and make his own topic.
-
Okay okay sorry I got into the subject, name him whatever, that was just my suggestion, I'm just saying if there's gonna be like 2 pages of congrats on him getting a kid, why not have his own thread? By planning it out I mean well, not him specifically, but all of you are like "lulz he shall be a pixel artist". Anyway, internets lol, if baccaman is angry about this, someone that he barely knows thats hundreds of miles away, then I apologize. The whole youtube link more important than baccaman's kid was actually a joke.....
-
Needs moar drama
SAGE FOR FAGGOTTRY
(I am joking here. :D Don't jump the gun and kill me for being totally unintelligible in the offtopic thread, guys :>)
Haha, by the way, not a chance in hell that Baccaman is angry about this, he's the chillest guy on the forum. :] And just because you live far away doesn't mean that your asshattery would be less asshattery, if it WAS, but srsly, I just saw an opinion, no real faggottry from your side :O
-
Just saw the Bionic Commando vid...for once I'll agree with the YouTube community, and say it just looks like the Spiderman game with guns...and a guy with dreads. Must be something I'm missing with all these new games, cause quite frankly, they still don't excite me as much. Even the new SF game, looks ok(I'm still holding my breath that it won't be 3d) isn't quite holding my interest. I guess it's the fact that companies aren't making anything groundbreaking. And if they are, it seems to come out more Gimmicky than initially thought. The Wii looked ok, but I think it's losing it's steam what with the Xbox juggernaut and it's current game lineup. I know I sound like a tired old frog here, but seriously, I wish they would stop focusing on making graphics so realistic and just go wacky with some ideas and designs. Oh well, at least I still got the Cinema and "the metalz" to keep me going...
p.s. speaking of metal, I've just gotten the cd, Indecent and Obscene(pieces), by Dismember, which only leaves one more Dismember cd before I can complete my evil collection: The classic "Like an Ever Flowing Stream"...The circle will be complete, muwahahhahahahahaaaaa!!
-
i actually like the name theo (short for -dore, or just by itself?)
the game does look like a spiderman game, butit'sbeen a LONG time since we've seen a good one of those, so im interested enough.
there are interesting and whacky games that have come out. guitar hero took a risk, shadow of the colossus was amazing and katamari was crazy. granted, those are a few years old, but.....well, the industry has dry spells.
-
I think you need to get into indie games then. Lots of creativity there. :y:
-
I've been playing around with a copy of Vista I got for free because I'm working at a college in the technology department. The new Windows Photo Gallery application, which replaces the default picture viewer in XP, actually seems to work on pixel art. I think it checks to see if the image has a palette, and if it does it disables that horrible interpolation that blurs everything as you zoom in.
So far, it's the only improvement I've been able to find. :^))
-
Well its better than my PC, thats for sure. I want to DESTROY THE THING WITH A HAMMER OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I mean seriously, I'll scan it with Spybot and start scanning, I'll leave the room for 5 minutes and I come back in and it's shut down(I've seen it happen a few times, it freezes and then shuts off), sometimes it'll just randomly shut down, I don't know if it's an overheating problem or what but it's really, really, really irritating. Hopefully I'll get a decent PC soon, that can actually play games decently as well. I hope some of you can understand where I'm coming from, that you too, have had a PC this terrible so you can understand(But if you've never had one like this, you are a lucky person).

vinnie the kid who listens to power metal
yeah thats a great plan

the mainstream industry IS doing good stuff if you actually look for it. Portal is absolutely great, TF2 is so stylish it hurts, the DS is host to all sorts of weirdness (especially since it is region-free) not to mention classical badassness (like new contra), mario galaxy is coming very soon and looks to be a very healthy return to the cavalcade of awesome that was mario64...and I have very high hopes for Assassin's Creed, let me tell you.
And yea, I realize that that is a small percentage of the recent and upcoming releases, but is the percentage of cool new games really worse than it has been in the past? Old systems often seem like they had amazing games with mindblowing frequency, but we look back on their catalogs with a certain amount of time compression I think.
This is all anecdotal of course, and increasing budgets should mean that many publishers are less willing to take the big risks, much less ANY risks. And yet...they do. Portal was a pretty huge risk on Valve's part, Namco was (by industry terms) CRAZY to fund Katamari Damacy's development, and Nintendo was barking to even think about releasing the DS and the Wii, both roundly mocked by the media and most gamers for being preposterous.
So basically what I am trying to say in blurry, nebulous terms is that there IS good stuff out there, and not just in the indie scene (although that is fairly overflowing with love and greatness these days). And try to remember how many F*ing terrible mario clones were released on the NES...
-
Although I have been subject to bits of nostalgia and temporarily crotchety old man syndrome when it comes to my memories of the "Good Old Days of Gaming", thinking back, I've realized it's always been the same. For every great video game (and book, and movie, and comic book, and television show, and music album) that's ever come out, there's always been 19 other piles of crap released at the same time, since the begging of time.
Just constantly keep your eyes peeled and make sure you don't miss any of the good stuff before it slips through the cracks and is forgotten by mankind's collective consciousness.
-
PSX/2 are the best systems ever put out for good game/bad game ratio
-
mh, i think the n64 takes that cake.
there are a lot of shitty games for the playstation, as much as i love it. part of being sony too is that with all of it's developer loyalty, it had tomb raider, final fantasy 7 (more hype than anything else but it did sell), etc, but they also had ALL THOSE OTHER TOMB RAIDER GAMES as well as a few final fantasy duds (personally i loved 8, but it's not like most people did). The same is true for every game series made on the playstation. There is a good side to this, if tenchu had never been made, tenchu 2 would not have been either, and that game is awesome, but there's stillthe issue of tenchu sorta sucking (can i turn while running? no! can a guard see farther than a ninja? yes!). The playstations also got 6 or 7 romance of the three kingdoms games. Ape escape was great, ape escape 2......sucked hard.
The n64 on the other hand had a smaller number of good games, most of which got it right. Banjo Kazooey and Banjo Tooie are both excellent games (nearly as fun as mario 64), and SPEAKING of mario 64, IT was on the n64!. As was mario kart 64 and super smash bros. Goldeneye, Two amazing zeldas, the list goes on. When a sequel is released, most often it rocks.
clearly you can go on listing good games for both platforms (playstion has the metal gear series, which remains constantly decent, if never amazing), so i wont pretend that these few games are a "winning" argument, but imo the n64, though it's vaults are smaller, had much better quality control. They also have Shigeru Miyamoto.
-

Mine is exactly the same :'D
Oh, and by the way, Theo is like one of the nicest names ever O:!!!
-
Yeah, Theo is the kind of name that gets you chicks. 8) :y:
-
Whoop! Congrats on the baby!
Also for god's sake name him something decent, like you know, Alex or Ben, yes, those are generic names but who the hell names their kid Theo Vincent Storm(I know I'm being harsh, but if he had that name, he'd be screwed through out high school)?
Hey, my little brother's name is Torkel (and that is weird even for being a Swedish name) and noone picked on him. Actually I think it's nice to see a name that isn't used so often (like Alex or Ben), because that shows some creativity, and lets you not be "just another Alex/Ben". Theo is a really nice name btw! Looks like it will fit him well. And Theo Vincent Storm is the kind of name that people will remember (but that has both positive and negative sides to it of course).
Oh, and I guess everyone plans or speculates over their kids' futures. That doesn't mean that they won't support them in whatever they become though!
-
Baccaman kind of got me to favor the name Theo..... so I guess now I like it.
Oh almost forgot:

Being a "Ben" myself, I know that even if you curse you're son with a name as a plain as "Ben", he can find ways around it. ;)
Also, it's way liberating to modify or pick your own name.
-
The only advice I have for naming kids, is that you should do yourself a favour and pick something short.
Because you are going to be stuck having to label every single damn thing (stationary, books, and whatnot) once your boy starts going to school, and you know less letters = less work.

At this moment, the forum's total topics number 4444, and the total posts number 62226.
Just because I'm cool like that.
-
Here's an idea for a topic. You know how sometimes you see someone's pixel art, and you really like the concept but you want to redo the whole thing. So its not like an edit at all. And it wouldn't be
appropriate to post in their topic, because it doesn't help them. But its not appropriate to post by itself, becuase you've stolen the concept. So idea for topic is one where you can post pictures you've made where you 'pimped' someone else's concept. Anyone else think this is necessary?
EDIT: one rule would be you have to ask the original artist's permission before posting/creating.
-
I've actually been thinking about that idea for awhile. I just didn't want to step on anyone's toes if I tried to "pimp" their original pieces (not that what I can do is any better, mind you...just would have been cool to see someone else's take on one person's idea.). But yeah, something tells me someone will get offended, most likely being indirectly, not directly.
I've actually considered opening up a new topic also, but felt it too might be pushing the boundaries a bit. I was thinking in the general section, maybe an ancestry/family background thread could be made. I know there's the introduction thread, but this could be more detailed accounts of your ancestors, and parents(no last names are to be required..that's private.) It could have all sorts of info, like how our family came to be, and things regarding our anthropology and such. Who knows, we may even find some long lost links between some members!(not that this would inhibit any one physically meeting. Just informational.) However, the only bad part is some people would rather keep their personal lives hidden, due to bad memories and such, which is fine. Still though, there is some rich, diverse culture going on in the pixel art world, and it would have been interesting...
-
Um, this idea basically sounds like a fan art thread, only it's focused on other members as the source for inspiration. Sounds cool. I'd actually like to take a jab at some of Mr. B.O.O.B.'s fighter sprites.
I think it will work as long as we show some decorum and send a PM to the victim before we start refactoring their work.
-
Do you PM victims before you attack them in an Avatar war? ;)

Any one here know of some great comic book artists? I was googling some, like the likes of Frank Frazetta, and Burne Hogarth, but felt there were some other great illustrators out there. Anyone have any suggestions?
-
Milo Manara, Moebius, Andrea Pazienza, Kaza, Liberatore, Barry Smith, Craig Russell, Alan Davis, Finch, Bill Sienkiewicz
-
I've always liked John Romita Jr. Has a nice Jack Kirby-esk blockiness to his anatomy, but it's a bit edgier and rough. Some of his published work also suffers from some of the same problems that Kirby's did, in that the art could either be enhanced or butchered based on who's inking it. I think Al Williamson was probably the one inker that really translated his drawing perfectly into ink.
Art Adams is good too. He's pretty much on the opposite spectrum from JRJR--he's got a really rounded, clean, highly polished style.
You might also dig Doug Mahnke, the horror/monster stuff he inks himself is topnotch.
-
I've always been a fan of Regis Loisel.
-
John Romita Jr is one of the worst professional superhero artists in the biz. Only marginally better than Liefeld, a step below Jim Lee. And Jim Lee is bad
-
I like Jim Steranko's stuff a lot. There's a couple really great artists in The Best of Ray Bradbury: The Graphic Novel whose names escape me now. :/

Looks like someone has been reading in between the lines. Quick, grab Gill before he gets away. Pixel holocaust, PIXEL HOLOCAUST!!!
I just took a look at some of the suggestions you guys threw out. From the whole 1 hour I was viewing his pieces, I think its safe to say that Milo Manara's style IS softcore porn. But that's just an hours worth of viewing. He could actually have some morally decent stuff too.( not that his stuff wasn't bad). Liberatore's stuff was pretty kool beans as well. His character is kinda' 80's robot wierd, though. Romita JR's stuff was ok, but it did seem sorta' generic.
@Helm: I guess it's because I'm not a professional comic artist, but after seeing some of Jim Lee's stuff, it didn't look so bad to me. Sure it still has that old tacky comic book feel, but it's still fits the style to me. Understandably, some of the main heroes tend to have the same facial expressions, but I'm no purist, and my opinion wouldn't really matter.

Leinil francis Yu (http://leinilyu.deviantart.com/ (http://leinilyu.deviantart.com/)) pencilled some Wolverine comics i liked alot, theres one panel from "not dead yet" on the bottom of this page : http://www.typingmonkeys.com/wolverine_024.html (http://www.typingmonkeys.com/wolverine_024.html)

Quinto Hoover mostly small press stuff, Richard Kane Ferguson (dunno if he did any comics though)...Both of have done art for assorted CCGs for a fact...Humberto Ramos is another one of my faves but his stuff is very stylized...

Isn't that the case with majority of all-american-super-hero-comics? Everyone wants to be Rob Liefeld, even though Liefeld ain't something someone should want to be. All i see is western comic artists who copy from other western comic artists to create a vicious cycle where someone learns the errors from someone, adds in their own errors and then someone learns from his pile of error and adds their own aaaand so forth.
Also isn't that what the public is grown to expect from these guys? Someone does something different and it won't be held in such a high regard because it's not the "super-hero-style" I might be totally wrong since i haven't been following the business for a good while now.
I'd like someone to point me to an awesome western comic that isn't american super heroes or liefeld stuff, feels like even the new stuff is something i've read over ten years ago or worse yet, THEY ARE THE SAME EXACT PANELS as i've seen before.
http://blog.adlo.es/swipe_of_the_week/2007/09/
All the good stuff is hiding somewhere....
The stuff that's refreshing, like Valhalla by Peter Madsen (which has not been released in a language i know after year 96 or so)
-
Isn't that the case with majority of all-american-super-hero-comics?
I don't know about the majority, I don't read many of them anymore.
If you want to read good western comics, then check out the names I posted before and follow their published work trails. And the american non-superhero stuff is currently rife with amazing artists. Try reading some Black Hole, Eightball, Adrian Tomine, Chris Ware, there's so much, there always was on the sidelines of the spandex superheroes...

Does anyone have any book suggestions (or advice) for drawing mechanical devices? It's one thing to draw from life and understand the shapes or physical patterns that animals generally take on from studying them, but mechanical things seem so much more complex, especially in the manner that they become different over time through discovery and innovation.
-
@Khris: I haven't a clue
@everyone: Alright, tried signing into Photobucket, and it gave me some "forbidden" message with it not accepting my server or some poop like that. Just checked my thread, and found all my stuff el gone-o. Any one else here with a photobucket account have all their stuff disappear like Magik? ( I think Photobucket's stuff is down...would suck if whatever happened to them causes all user's albums stuff to be deleted. The Nerd Roar would be heard from the highest mountains!!)
-
Khris, there's no difference between drawing a human, a lion, a car, or the innards of a pocket watch. It's all just a bunch of shapes and form. The only difference between drawing a organic and mechanical object is scale and amount of detail. As far as book recommendations, I've read and can recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (http://www.amazon.com/New-Drawing-Right-Side-Brain/dp/0007116454/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-7362881-0118233?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1193268100&sr=1-1) (a terse read, but very informative) and How to Draw What You See (http://www.amazon.com/How-Draw-What-Practical-Books/dp/0823023753/ref=pd_sim_b_shvl_img_2/103-7362881-0118233) (focuses on building foundations with basic 3-dimensional shapes and refining the drawing in steps). The Natural Way to Draw (http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Way-Draw-Working-Study/dp/0395530075/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-7362881-0118233?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1193268027&sr=8-1) is also recommended a lot but I found it to be filled with too much art-hippie poppycocks.
how can you like art adams AND jrjr? that boggles my mind...I mean i acknowledge that it is POSSIBLE to like them both but...i dunno i like the sympathy or understanding to truly comprehend it.
Zen? I dunno. Sure some of his art has issues, but there's plenty to like about it as well. Same thing with Pat Lee, and yes, even Liefeld.
Oh and Happy Whateverth Birthday, Panda-san.
-
Happy bday btw Panda... :)

pkmays: Let me clarify: I'm looking to find a good, practical method for understanding mechanics in order to not have to rely on reference after reference to properly draw a machine. At this point I'm fairly decent at drawing humans and possibly animals without reference, but that's not so with machines. I own "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and understand as well as embrace the concept, method, and all, but I figured there may be good books on the subject of drawing mechanics and perhaps quick 'rules of thumb' to go by for mechanics (in the same way human proportions can be remembered by head sizes and other relative lengths, and can more easily be studied through a specialized anatomy book than a general drawing book).
-
Most How to Draw X books are aimed at beginners who can and really aren't that useful for more advanced study. Some good old elbow grease (practice) and a constant search for reference material are going to yield better results than any quick fix book.
-
I'm not looking for a quick fix, I'm looking for a book similar to my "Anatomy for the Artist" book if anything, which shows lots of detailed drawings of muscle groups, the range of motion of various parts, and etc. It's basically a nice collection of the important things to study instead of aimless google image searching, ya dig? Unfortunately, it seems like I'm just going to have to go with image search or whatever I can actually see in life until I can unearth such a book.
-
Ah, I dig. Yeah, there are books that teach the fundamentals and inner workings of machines, rotary parts, and the like. Probably the best place to look is in the engineering section of a college bookstore. They won't be aimed at artists, but there should be enough diagrams and illustrations to get some use out of them. Seems like they'd be pretty expensive though. There's always used bookstores, I've found tons of valuable reference material sifting through bargain bins.
-
"Everybody wants to be Liefield??"
For real? ???
Does Ashley Wood count as Western? I loved his style in the early Metal Gear Solid comics and just prior to him working on that. Now I think he pumps things out too quick it's looking he's tried pushing the style too far. I like Howard Shum's Gun-Fu, too, mostly for the lively palette. Alberto Ruiz, as well, more for his obsessive examination of line. Obviously other artists that people have already mentioned...

Also, i just have to say that actual lemon juice is soo much nicer than generic lemonade. It's just so tingley and lush. :0'

Just got a hold of Pro Motion. It is pretty good, but I'm still getting used to it. I feel like a friggin' moron, though, cause I can't find any tool that will just let me select a portion of an image, so I can move it around, or copy a portion of it, like the simple one("select" , or "free-form select" tool) in MS paint. UGGHH, frustration! Not to mention I've been to a couple of help sites for the program, but can't find a thing for it. I shan't stop looking though...Soldier on, young Mexican, soldier on!!

eh... just use the "get animated brush" or "get brush from current freehand", you know the one with the scissors or the lasso tool. It will make a brush with the part you select and you can play with it at your will.
Also welcome back faceless.
And also thank you to those who greeted me back during my birthday, my bad for the slow reply, but I've been busy lately.
And uhmm about the smiley, I guess replacing it in the smileys folder will fix it. uhm...

Any who, I was aware of that animated brush tool. I was just hoping for something much more simpler(cause I'm a simple man.).

There's a reason why your doodles are incarcerated the majority of their lives: They're dangerous psychopaths who have a mind of their own, and also have the evil ability to use mind control over the hosts they've attached themselves to. I've fell victim to it many times before. Also they tend to th...wait, what was I talking about? Oh yeah, spam mail sucks.

For everyone who has a Wii, on your remote does the FCC ID code on the side of the remote have the word "POO" in it? I only just discovered this on mine!

It might just be me , but do the tree's in the mobile game 'Bobby carrot 5: Forever' look like a rip-off of the chaos engine's?
Chaos engine from the CC topic of it: http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/masonbond/crit_chaos/ChaosEngine1_s9.png
Bobby carrot: http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8787/98180864ln3.jpg (jpg unfortunately)
If you notice also, part of the tree stump is the same shape and direction as the chaos engine's.

hmmm... it certainly looks similar... but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was inspired... after all the BMB stuff is quite seminal.

Very odd, i had a look on alex's site (http://www.finalredemption.com) and found his 'mag-man' game (which i assume is the one you refer to) and the rock's and one of the mushrooms are very similar indeed

Thought Helm (and some others) would enjoy this:
Miyamoto:
Before this, when we were to decide on something I kept saying “It’s instinct”, so I’m actually surprised myself! (laughs) For example, everyone thinks of a cute, cuddly character when they’re asked to think of a character called Mario.
Iwata:
The types of cute characters that seem like they would be living in the Mario world.
Miyamoto:
Because they believe that the characters should be that way, they have a set image in their mind of things like how the eyes should always be wide open.
But I don’t really draw my characters with really big, wide-open eyes. And when a new staff, who had that misconception about the way Mario characters should be, would come up and show me some sketches saying “Look, I drew some Mario characters”, and they would look nothing like the Mario characters that I was thinking of. Lately, all the artists’ techniques have improved compared to the past, but their styles seem to look more and more uniformed.
There’s this pre-created template of a “well-drawn picture”, and it seems like the younger artists’ styles are forming to that template.
Iwata:
They have technique, but they lack character.
Reminds me of all of Helm's anti-anime rants. :P
-
Miyamoto might not draw mario that way but then again This is the modern interpretation of the character. (http://nintenblog.free.fr/wallpaper/ds_New_Super_Mario_Bros_wallpaper.jpg) If he doesn't like, he should stop it.

Anybody here played Psychonauts? I bought the Orange Box a little while ago and saw Psychonauts was available on Steam, too, so I also grabbed it.
Gotta say, it is the funnest game I have played in like 2-3 years. Big name attacked to it, Tim Schaefer, who worked on a bunch of the old Lucas Arts Adventure games like Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island series. It plays like a platformer with a dash of the old adventure games' fetchquests and humour. It takes place in a summer camp for psychics-in-training. Basically, weird stuff is happening and it's up to Raz[putin] to save the day. You'll do this by entering the minds of psychics and psychos as you acquire all kinds of of psychic powers. There's a lot of variety in the gameplay and platforming. I had a really great metroid/zelda moment when i unlocked one of the new psychic powers and found all kinds of new places to go. It's also the first game in a long time where I actually gave a damn for any of the characters. Amazingly for current standards, they had emotions other than outwardly projected bad-assness. Well, aside from in the slightly awkward intro movie
It cost me about $20 on Steam and took about 22 hours on the in-game clock to beat. Completely worth the money. There's a demo you can try on Steam, but I warn you that it doesn't even compare with the rest of the game. Seriously, it's like 1/100 of the creativity and genius of the rest.
-
Interestingly, the writer for Portal co-wrote Psychonauts. I also heartily recommend it; it is not a perfect action game, but there are sections of it that are priceless and which I will remember for a long time...

And I'm using for pixel art only :P

Way to waste money and look super-excited about it.

Photoshop is too damn over-priced, its like $600 or something right?
-
As opposed to Promotion which is like about $80 and is geared for pixelart.
If you bought PSCS3 and really only use it for pixelart, then you either have too much money, know not how to handle money (how much you have is not clue) or you are rather silly.

Way to waste money and look super-excited about it.
Maybe that's anger!

You should try to sell it off while you can and go with the GIMP instead.

eh, I have compared Photoshop and GIMP, and overall I find Photoshop to be a lot better, although I should it would be, for the price tag on it. By the way, you PAID for photoshop?
-
Yeah, I'm going to pay 300 dollars to pixel.....I'm real dedicated, huh? :P
The truth is that I need it for school. And it's the education version, so it was cheaper than usual.
And if I wasn't so indolent, I would probably just find it online.
-
eh, I have compared Photoshop and GIMP, and overall I find Photoshop to be a lot better
In what way?
It may be just a tad less user-friendly compared to Photoshop, but I'd say it's just as qualified for creating digital paintings and illustrations.
-
You never know whether software companies might crack down on piracy one day. Right now, if you have a pirated version of windows they can detect that when you try to get an update and stop you from getting an update (friend had laptop from asia). I think there was a court case about a college getting fined because music was being exchanged over its network. My point is piracy seemed okay when there was no way to get caught, but i think know it is easy because your computers are connected to the internet and the programs can send information without your permission (correct me if im wrong). In other words, buying software might be better than piracy one day (plus u are feeding the
programmers families).
-
Rydin, is that excitement, rage, or are you just hungry?:P
Well, kudos for you I guess.
-
Right now, if you have a pirated version of windows they can detect that when you try to get an update and stop you from getting an update (friend had laptop from asia).
Most pirate version's have it removed or have been patched so that it pass's all online check's and download update's, it's really not hard at all.
(Who even want's windows update's anyway? :-\ )
-
eh, I have compared Photoshop and GIMP, and overall I find Photoshop to be a lot better
In what way?
It may be just a tad less user-friendly compared to Photoshop, but I'd say it's just as qualified for creating digital paintings and illustrations.
I found it to be much more user friendly, and much easier to learn the basics with. But, maybe that's just my affection towards photoshop talking, maybe I should attempt to conduct a completely unbiased study...
-
The point is though, that a freeware program can pull off the same technology(mainly) as Photoshop. So what justifies the extra $600 for a program when someone else is pulling off the same effort. I don't think user-friendliness is worth $600(or whatever is is).
-
I got photoshop 7 a couple years ago for just $200. It's got everything a pixel artist needs plus the full suite of other adobe tools, and its a legit commercial license! Ah, the wonders of used/outdated software and ebay.
While I do use promotion for 90% of my pixel art now, until it has layers i do need photoshop for some things still, and the CS series adds very few pixel-useful features at the cost of a lot lower performance and a much higher pricetag. No thanks!
Photoshop makes a good glue app too.
I've tried GIMP before but the interface is too frustrating and slow for me.
So, to sum up, if you have $300 to spend on art software, full commercial licenses of Photoshop 7 and Pro Motion will get you farther than an academic license of CS3 :)
-
just out of interest... can GIMP read PSD's? or AI files?
-
I don't think it can read Illustrator files, but it can read .psd files.
I personally go with the freeware alternative to Illustrator (Inkscape). It does just about as well and works with the .svg file type which can also be opened in the GIMP.
I've tried GIMP before but the interface is too frustrating and slow for me.
After a bit of customization, I've found the interface to be extremely flexible for the GIMP. But, eh. I can understand that it's not gonna work for everyone.
-
It'd be difficult to adpat to a system that didn't comform to industry standard filetypes I'm afraid... I'm sure GIMP's fine and fair enough for the enthusiast but as for the working professional?
Adobe all the way...

Hey guys, is Pixelation going to have a Stocking Activity this year? I would really like to enter, as I missed it last year.

Hopefully this time i'll get something back. :'(

Yeah... people not coming up with presents upset me. Hopefully nobody will do that this year.
Perhaps I should threat with public humiliation and once they had enough, a permanent ban... uhmm :hehe:
Also, PMing everyone was a pain in the ass.

Also I vouch for exclusion of the people who did not deliver their present at all. As in they can not participate this year >:o

That of course.

'Tis the season soon again, which reminds me of something that's always been bugging me greatly: drawing trees wrong. I remember having had issues of wrongly drawn trees at the age of six, and I still do. To illuminate what happens when you THINK you know perfectly well what something looks like, so well that there's no point checking reference pictures of something that's SO OBVIOUS that a child can draw it.
Can anyone spot a problem with these 3d trees:
-
That WoW one looks like it's been designed by a mentally retarded man.
-
the CG trees all the branches point down... whereas the real nes you've hilighted they grow up. Is that it?
PS - thanks for the egg linky... :D
-
all coniferous trees' branches grow upward, not just the ones he's highlighted!
-
That's right, upwards. But for example Christmas trees are almost always drawn with branches going downwards, and I suppose that's created a strong mental image in the back of people's heads that they tend to draw or model evergreens that way. That sort of a structure is taken as given to the extent that artists often don't even bother to check what they really look like.
-
hahah, a testament to how inbred the imagery in our heads has become.
it seems like all the information available to us nowdays is third hand, specially in digital mediums and the internet.
-
i blame manga tutorials (http://www.mangatutorials.com/tut/forest1.htm)
-
All modern problems have deep roots in manga tutorials.
Even world poverty and hunger.
-
That's quite sad with the trees from a certain viewpoint. But as long as it does not hurt gameplay it's not that bad.
This will undoubtedly be engraved into my brain now for all times.
-
Anyone going to enter this?
http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/competition01 (http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/competition01)
-
all coniferous trees' branches grow upward, not just the ones he's highlighted!
There are some gray areas, of course. Not all of them grow as intensely upward as that picture.
Some pines grow horizontally:
http://www.ci.cypress.ca.us/public_works/images/trees/star_pine.jpg (http://www.ci.cypress.ca.us/public_works/images/trees/star_pine.jpg)
http://www.geography.hunter.cuny.edu/~tbw/wc.notes/15.climates.veg/veg.images/needleleaf.evergreen/boreal.forest.canada.jpg (http://www.geography.hunter.cuny.edu/~tbw/wc.notes/15.climates.veg/veg.images/needleleaf.evergreen/boreal.forest.canada.jpg)
A lot of it depends on the tree's environment and how much snow it gets. But Naas is right, most of them grow with an upward branch pattern.
-
Anyone going to enter this?
Yeah.
-
That's right, upwards. But for example Christmas trees are almost always drawn with branches going downwards, and I suppose that's created a strong mental image in the back of people's heads that they tend to draw or model evergreens that way. That sort of a structure is taken as given to the extent that artists often don't even bother to check what they really look like.
Well, usually tree branches tend to grow upwards in hopes of getting more sunlight (or in some cases they way it suits them better for getting more sun), but Christmas trees usually are loaded with balls, stars and random decoration, and that pulls the branches down.
So in a way it is understandable (at least why they draw the festive trees that way), but yeah, sad how they don't bother to check references with stuff they think they know how it looks.
Then again, not many people know how trees look like (perfectly at least) or actually bother to pay attention to in-game graphics (outside of the "whoa looks realistic" or the like).
-
I know when I played WoW I couldn't care less about the way the trees looked.
-
I was looking at Yoyo games website and remembered a book I saw "how to design a great looking website by learning from bad looking websites". It might be a activity where
you grab a screenshot from one GM game (which tend to look ugly) and point out whats wrong with it and how it could be made better. Might not be that good an idea since
they are not aiming for pixel art gfx, but maybe a way people can share knowledge about colors, composition etc.
-
I generally blame manga tutorials for everything too. :ouch:
-
Be still my heart... (http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200711/N07.1114.1221.16217.htm) This is amazing... I've waited 18 years for this... even tried to make my own GB game for Doom (unfortunately). I rarely am giddy... but this is one of those times!

Can anyone spot a problem with these 3d trees:

I've got both XP and OS X running on my MacBook now. :y:
Couldn't you just get a PC then? :P
-
It's kind of like getting an attachment to your tricycle to make it a bike. There's no reason to go back but maybe you'll decide you like alpha transparency more than ease of use and solid feel.
That simile totally broke down halfway through.
-
of course he can't just get a PC to run XP, it would have to cost half as much as a MacBook and have a reasonable default interface! We can't have simple, accessible, or highly potent machinery in this day an age! it has to cost money and all the buttons have to bounce and change size!
(we also can't make archive folders without a hack, download ANYTHING that isn't through iTunes, have a free, decent word processor, or any of those other things that only silly people like)

noooo please no mac/pc internet battle

Meh, probably already posted but anyway:

oh-khey........... :(
the silly truism is that when you turn off all the stupid stuff in preferences they both pretty much are nice. most of the differences are superficial and can be removed either through preferences or by downloading fairly small amounts of software.
So far no good way to get the ctrl key and the apple key to switch jobs though.... if anyone knows a non-permanent solution let me know?

http://www.mobygames.com/game/simon-the-sorcerer/screenshots (http://www.mobygames.com/game/simon-the-sorcerer/screenshots)
I was admiring these screenshots for Simon the Sorcerer. I remember discussion about index painting, was this used in this case? I can't believe someone made somany backdrops
for this game, even if they did recylcle trees sometimes.
-
Looks like a good amount of indexpainting with pixel finish here and there. I am almost certain there is automatic aa, brighten/darken, blend and so on going on in many places. But yes, good work, a bit overaaed, which prolly is due to auto aa.
-
Simon has some of the best Dpaint pixel art in video games. Overaa yes, but I don't see auto-aa really. I see discrete ramps.
-
i am sure there is blur going on, which adds autoaa. Also in later versions of Dpaint you can clamp the palette to only use colours you want to. So colours used for aa can be reigned in quite easy. This feature I hope we will get in PM6 as well, it's useful for some other stuff too :o
-
Yeah that'd be totally useful. Don't forget that Simon wasn't made with high-tech tools though. The people that made it were just masters. They can do what you're looking at on the first version of Dpaint.
-
...which was fairly comprehensive.
-
to me these shots suggest a skilled artist working under time constraints (and getting a bit formulaic/sloppy in his blending). If i remember too those old screens were none too kind to edges (made them supersharp), so it could be that this was an attempt to address what is no longer an issue?
impressive implementation of value keys with the subtle shifts from high to middle and extended middle major. really helps set the mood individually.
-
If i remember too those old screens were none too kind to edges (made them supersharp)
What? If anything older screens were blurrier. And many people played Simon games on Amiga, plugged into TV sets. Blurrrdomville.

Like me. And afterwards I was totally surprised of how jaggy the graphics where, when playing on an emulator. Some games looked better blurred. On Simon my fingers are itching to introduce some sort of a hue shift to the green rocks.

AGHHHHHHHHH WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THE ASSASSIN'S CREED ENDING?! JIPASDGYIASDFJIBGSDFJKLSFK WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Man, my family house got rained by fist sized stones 3 hours ago <night time>.. Everyone was in panic, I called the police, went outside to investigate until I saw those stones hitting the ground near me. One hit from that would probably sent me to the hospital
You almost have no defense against thrown rocks and you can't even clearly pinpoint where it is coming from, using a flashlight just makes you a target. I wish I have those shields used by the police :P
Anyway, the group of people who did this got away since the police arrived too late.. and now people living in our compound is paranoid of another attack. I also think one of our tenants is being targeted for some reasons.

Is everyone all right? Hope no one got hit?
I always wonder what the fuck's going on in the minds of the people that do such things. How can you enjoy throwing rocks at people?

Yeah, I mean, people dying by bullets is so much better than people possibly being injured by rocks/perpetrators possibly being put into confinement and no one getting injured at all.
Just use a gun and let your frustration out. Nevermind that people have multi-faceted minds/personalities and people throwing rocks like madmen can have sides that make them wonderful people.
Just shoot them. Lives ain't worth shit anyway.
:< Sorry for the naive blend of utalitarian thoughts and humanism.
I just hate the 'KILL WIF GUN'-automatic reaction to stuff. So please shut the hell up or elaborate. Instead of the gun-penis-replies.

Yeah, everyone is alright just some bad nerves and paranoia.. I'm just afraid for my nephews and kids here. I can't say about our roof though, have to check that in the morning for damage.
My country screwed up.. people are religious fanatics, believes too much on paranormal and easy to manipulate :( if things don't get their way, you will usually see in the news a guy got chop into pieces and scattered in some grassy land. I really think this place is evil and full of ignorant people.

oh my god futurama, Bender's Big Score has been ripped you can even find it on google video
and it was so damn awesome, tons of inside jokes to fans plus lots of jabs at FOX, family guy etc.
It was so great it almost borders on fan-service, if you are or were ever a fan, watch it.
-
I thought it was a bit meh. Yes, it had LOTS of little in jokes, but on the whole it dragged a bit and is imo not as funny as the average Futurama episode from the first 4 seasons (and yes, I have the boxset)
I hope the other 3 will be better, but on a whole I feel this kinda stuff does not lend itself very well to feature format. Short episodes deffo work better.
-
each movie will be broken up into 4 episodes, which is why each 30 minutes kinda had their own part of the plot that everything focussed on.
only thing that disappointed me was seymour only making a very minor cameo and the two songs were kinda painful.
but for futurama, especially after so long, I can't help but love it
-
How that works out will have to be seen. I mean they made the thing as a movie, but I guess they have planned ahead so stuff is easy-ish to cut up, like an episode with fry and the nar-whale or something. Still, as a whole it is sub par imo.
-
I thought it was a bit meh. Yes, it had LOTS of little in jokes, but on the whole it dragged a bit and is imo not as funny as the average Futurama episode from the first 4 seasons
Yeah, I agree. The whole thing really was just filled with recycled stuff passed off as in-jokes or references, or at least it seemed that way to me. And I can't say I enjoyed the references to Fox and stuff, it kind of seemed out of tune with the show.
Although that's not to say I didn't enjoy it completely. It's just Futurama has a pretty high standard to start with.
-
Wait new Futurama episodes already? Are they already showing or what? Huha, found the new movie, gonna watch it tonight.
Also uh, I has a question for everyone:
Futurama or Simpsons?
For my personally I'd choose Futurama, but meh.
-
Futurama for sure, with all the geeky jokes and clever situations.
I mean The Simpsons had its time back then, but now it is more on the mediocre side (though the movie was funny).
-
oh futurama by miles, I'll be honest the simpsons can still occasionally get a laugh out of me, but it's down to about 2 per season, but almost every other joke is just awful.
Speaking of futurama, Bender is in the credits for Contra 4 :D

I've recently found myself wondering how to properly pronounce Adarias..
It's odd because i basically never say it outloud, and therefore the pronounciation has never been important, but one day i just realised i'm not really sure. I guess generally i'd have thought it was 'Ay-dar-ee-ass' or 'A-dar-ee-ass' but it could also be 'Aida-riaz' (or maybe not so zeddy). Ok now i've just realised there aint much difference between them. But i won't delete this post cus it would seem like a waste ey wot. Ignore if you wish. :noob:
-
I pronounce it UH-DAIR-EE-ISS. (A-DY-REE-USS reminds me of "diarrheas".)
-
I guess if I were to pronounce it, it'd be "uh-dear-i-ous" except the phonetic pronunciation would still sound a bit different coz of my accent.
What about my name?!
When I made it, I only really thought people would think "Tuh-kaahm"
but that really hasn't been the case
-
I think "taka-em" because the M is capitalized
-
Me too. :3
And I pronounce Adarias "uh-dare-ee-as" except the "as" is kinda a mix between "is" "as" and "us" wtf? xD
My name has brought much confusion. I wonder how people here would pronounce it..? o:
-
Adarias : Uh-dare-e-us
.TakaM : dot-Tok-ah-Em(Is it really meant to be pronounced?)
BTW, Larwick, I really like the way you did the metal in your avatar.
-
adarias is 'a dA ree as' for me. I am greek, I pronounce things like a greek.
Takam is similarly, 'TA kam'.
I am XELM
-
I pronounce Aelyrin "AIL-a-rin"
I pronounce TakaM "TAH-kah EM"
I pronounce Helm "Helm"
Compared to these (excluding Helm) my name is easy to pronounce.
-
I pronounce Aelyrin "AIL-a-rin"

Yup.
FAWKTUH-BLAWRD
;D
A vulgarization of the swedish pronounciation.
My nick is pronounced 'Jäd'
;3
-
"uh-DARE-yes", helm's is closest to how i imagined it
"AIR-lin"
"FAUK-tuh-blaad"
"TAkuh-Em"
"Jad", like Dad :P
"Helm", not as throaty as the greek i suppose
baccaman is one i always get wrong. I always think "backgammon" like the game
-
"Jad", like Dad :P
<3
btw, english is WORTHLESS for making phonetic explanations.
We have to render a swedish 'a' as 'aw' or 'uh' when it's really neither. ): And so on, for like every language there is. Except for english.
Describing german, swedish, spanish or japanese with english pronounciation is worthless ):
-
"au" seems to work ok for the neither aw nor uh sound (my swedish friend nazo confirms)
swedish pronunciation is not so difficult, you just have to remember the invisible H at the end of every word. it's like Gaelic (which im sure EVERYONE here knows :P)
the tricky part is that swedish and english have so many cognates. take "spade" for instance (which is also a homograph); in english, it's "speid" and in swedish it's "spaa-dh"
-
I think probably the only way to really tell how someone pronounces something is to hear them say it. @__@
-

spaa-deh
O:
You must pronounce the 'e'!
But yeah, pronouncing swedish is like putting and 'h' after each word and then take away all the diphthong-sounds O: (omg dipthong, what a word.)
I mean, why is it that 'spade' in english is written like that when it should've been 'spayd' or at least 'spaed'? But 'boat' is not spelled 'bote'? English doesn't follow its own pronounciation rules. Ever. I mean: 'Aisle'. WTF!?!?
Sweden DO have diphthongs, but they're all dialectal O: (dialectal, does that word even exist?)
Like in 'Skåne' (not pronounced skayn but 'skawneh' (aw or more like 'oo' in 'door' skoor(-r)ne)) where Hej (hey=hello) turns into Hay, a way more wider diphthong.
Or like 'bil', normal swedish, 'beel', skånska: 'baeyl'.
Yay dialects (:
-
I for one welcome our new Robot Santa overlord.
-
hmm, when i hear nazo speak it's not a voiced vowel, im not sure how to write that other than h. If i know how to place a schwa i would :P
spah-deh is DEFINITELY not how she's saying the word :P
Edit: copied schwa from wikipedia :P
Spah-də

I closed the store an hour late tonight.. how the hell did time manage to slip away from me that much?

Nods, nods, except the greek part.
"uh-dAr-yas","tAh-kam"
-
Adarias - Ah- Dare-ee-us
.TakaM - Tah-kah-EM (don't say the dot)
Aelryin - Ayel-ree-in.
Though, on a slightly off topic note, i say baccaman like Chewbacca, if only for my love of wookies.
-
For anyone that was wondering, you are meant to pronounce Panda as Ee-vuhl Oh-ver-lawrd >:0

Panda is 'ah keed ah keed' for me.

Haha

I'm so bored there is nothing to do.I am waiting for something but i don't know what....Yes i am weird.

how about that gamespot :P
ah well, wrong time to have a spine, not many people were very interested in the game to begin with, and these days a score as low as 7.5/10 = no purchase :-\

Probably, but not before 2008.
Once the Secret Santa is over (and perhaps the winter holidays, so early 2008), we'll also put CCs, Iso collabs, Mockup Frenzies and what not.
You can look forward to it I suppose.

KM posted a link, but Jeff (gamespot's oldest reviewer) was allegedly fired for his review of kane and lynch, gamespot had a big advertising deal with edios, and as soon as the 6/10 review went up, all the advertising went down and jeff was fired ::)
also, can someone familiar with imageready tell me how to make it so that when I edit a gif in imageready, it doesn't change the colour of everything new added to colours that were only already in the original gif?

Heh, that's funny. I think I'll stop visiting Gamespot now..
Regarding your question, do you want the colour indexes to remain the same? (0 = transparent, 1 = blue, 2 = red... 15 = white). You have to make and save a pallette for that otherwise just save for web should solve it.
-
also, can someone familiar with imageready tell me how to make it so that when I edit a gif in imageready, it doesn't change the colour of everything new added to colours that were only already in the original gif?
I've noticed this as well. However, I don't think it's only associated with Imageready alone. I use both Imageready, and Microsoft paint, and BOTH DO THIS. I ussually just try to save it as PNG, close it and reopen to work with it, or just delete. To be honest, that's why I hate working with gifs. Picky little bastard, I must say.(Though, it's kinda' cool to turn a glitch into something useful by pasting something into the preexisting gif file, using it's previous palette. Quite the poor man's palette filter, but interesting none the less)
In other words, no I don't have a clue how to stop this, and this has been a waste of a post.
toodles...

's goin' good, Gill. My internets are mostly limited to the school computers now, but should be getting it at home soon. Then I'll reclaim my position as first loser!

really helm? i always thought you loved reading post after post of worthless garbage put forth in order to achieve a superficial sense of self-accomplishment :P

Is it just me or do Adarias and Helm love to pick fights with eachother? Also watched the new Futurama movie, it was meh.

Helm, that sounds disturbingly threatening. I have chosen not to. Jad, you should have been more insistent.. or threatening.
-

Guess you gotta be a sarcastic fucker to get it.

-
it's just you, we are not fighting.
Me and Helm once fought.
Physically.
He won of course, as he was an elder. However, I'm sure he felt that final blow to the crotch, as I saw him waddle all the way back to Greece. He must have been angry at himself for forgetting to wear his spiked, metal codpiece, that he wears on a daily basis.
In other news, I feel that the number of posts do NOT determine one's worth at a forum, but rather, the impact each post makes on the individual it is directed toward. For growth. I guess it's the whole "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" situation. For growth as a whole, I always say, as each person has something good to offer, even if they believe artistic talent isn't quite visible at the moment...
@TakaM: Man, I wonder how long it took that guy to get all the engineering for the models and everything to fit the way it did. That, or he must already work at an auto line assembly already...amazing.
-
it's more like kinky biting.
that's slightly startling, but it would explain my unusual affinity for knit scarves

Alright, I was talking to Ben when suddenly AN IDEA, what do you guys think about having a "Pixelation Fighter" Challenge Thread? Like, we'd make a sprite sheet of ourselves of us doing several moves and yeah(The only problem I see is we gotta keep similar styles). Then if anyone would care to program and if anyone wouldn't mind doing all the BG work, then we could have an actual game to play, I think it'd be neat, anyway(Oh crap, I'd need to practice alot if this does happen).
-
KoS 2007 (or wait a bit and 2008)?
-
Every now and then, someone has had an idea like that. And so far it never worked.
Also, for some reason for those that come up with them, the "dream pixelation game" always tends to be a fighter game.
And just a thought, but who would be stronger than the admins?
I mean, just imagine... "Uhm... Kick? Fire punch?... Uhuuh... *click click* BANNED :hehe:"
-
How about a 2D-platform with every level using different tiles created by different users.
-
Urgh, please not a fighter game, if someone tries to go through with it.
Though, either way I'd be willing to contribute :).
Also, it just dawned on me:
:hehe:
What the fuck is going on in that smiley?
Is he inflating his cheeks?

I think it is meant to be an evil grin of some sorts.
Then again, I don't agree how some of the smiley files were named as, but I think whoever picked them, did it that way so they replace the default ones without having to change all the codes.

gotta get me one of these... (http://www.thinkgeek.com/apparel/hats-ties/9352/)

8-Bit Tie! Roxors!
-
I've seen it before and it's awesome. Thanks for the reminder though, my mates are sooo getting that for me this christmas.
-
look at those jaggies!
-
yeah I was thinking jaggies when I saw this as well. If I wore that I'd have to explain to everybody that saw it how it could be made better
-
It'd be nice if they'd AA them to common dress shirt colors...
-
At least selective outlining!
Also, a great invaders tattoo. Kinda makes up for the lame depeche-mode rose :D
-
And the icky haircut. :blind:
-
I have no problems with the haircut, but eh, it doesn't really fit him (: He looks so blonde and red-faced-finnish-scandinavian-like, plus, he's not a teenager anymore, so his SMOOTH BOY-skin that would've went so well with the cut has become MAN-SKIN D:>
But hey, I can dig it. He looks like a nice guy (:

It's a "My son is an emo, too" haircut :P
Luckily you can't go OT on this thread.

What's with the censor? Out of all the forums I've been to on the internet, I've never really seen Pixelation as a place that needed it. Anytime anyone really cursed it wasn't directed at a person, or really in a bad way. Everyone was really too friendly(with a few exceptions) to take seriously when it came to cursing.
-
Pixelation has a censor?
-
ahh, I was wondering why people were saying vuck
can we get an option in our profile to leave words uncensored? I'd rather just read everything normally.
-
That pixel tie is the perfect gift for my friend. However, it's $20. WHAT. :mean:

The censor makes me realize how much I actually say fuck :-[
-
But hey, I can dig it. He looks like a nice guy (:
I concur. Although I loathe the hair. Regardless, he reminds me of Adam from Mythbusters... although all red-heads remind me of Adam... ( I DO know he has black emo-kid hair.. but his facial hair looks red.) anyways I can only assume Adam is a nice person in reality, so this person reminds me of a nice person. I feart his post does not make sense... opinions? :D
-
I always thought ties were a stupid idea (although that one is pretty cool)
-
Fuck!
Harharharharhar (:

Fuck!
Harharharharhar (:
Thanks, Captain Killjoy. :P
I guess most of you will just have to resort to other lesser known curse words, and gestures expressed by unique cultures. Like say, " Your mothers were all strumpets!!" Yeah, that'll do...
-
Actually, the Vuck thing is an internal joke. Not meant as a limit.
-
Nice blog there Ikke, some of the art reminds me of Ptoing's stuff.
-
god damn it, street fighter IV is 3D >:(
-
Stick to SF3 then.
-
that's the plan
and for the folks at home:
hopefully all the animations are canned so it will still play the same, and I hope to GOD there is no "LOL 3D Fighting" strafing
-
As far as I know, the news on it says that it'll play like a 2D game.
Were you really expecting 2D graphics, however? No doubt, I would've preferred 2D as well, but it's just such an unrealistic expectation considering, well, many factors (the lack of 2D talent in the mainstream industry at this point, the 3D trailer, the ease of making and using 3D over 2D, etc...). I think it looks fine how it is. My main gripe is with the rather bland background characters, and a bit of odd anatomy on Ryu (huge feet, and the chest is funky, though I'd say huge feet have always been a stylistic staple of SF games). The colors and rendering look nice, and I'm glad they're not striving for a super realistic look with this that the other 3D fighters do.
KOF XII has been promised to be the best 2D game ever, so I guess you can still look forward to that.
-
It's hard to say what I was truly expecting, but I think I can say with confidence that if it were 2D I wouldn't've been shocked.
Yeah, the hands on guys say it plays 2D, but all "2D gameplay" means to them is moving left/right.
2D graphics ensured canned animations, which ensures instant readability/feedback, with 3D and the luxury of having all moves transition smoothly, I doubt they will can the animations.
For a 3D street fighter, I don't think I could ask for it to look any better though, it is a little odd (crotch), definitely looks like a street fighter game
-
I totally agree with your suspicions on how genuine the 2D gameplay will be, but don't worry too much. There was a recent fighter named "Battle Fantasia" that was made with 3D graphics and proves to totally represent 2D gameplay despite that. Makes use of 'canned animation,' as you say.
See a video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwjJa9l1cSo
It's kinda choppy, but again, that's just how that team handled it. It seems to really follow suit with other Arc System games. My point is just that it's possible for this to be genuinely 2D in gameplay.
-
the proportions and anatomy are ridiculous for a 3d game! they should have acknowledged the intestines and hips if they were going to joke about realism.
btw whats with the small but rockhard dick and complete lack of testes? if you're going to make a game that displays his heritage in that way, you should make it a little more...normal
-
Ryu's chest looks scary. Does he need some eatuns?
-
(http://herculeaneffort.com/upload/rulk.jpg)
RYU SMASH!
btw whats with the small but rockhard dick and complete lack of testes?
The small lump actually ARE the testicles. The other lump to the right of it is the head.
On a more serious note, it seems that they are marrying the loose alpha style proportions with the pore-and-stubble "realism" of modern 3D fighters (Virtua Fighter, Tekken, etc.). The result is a complete Frankenstein's monster. It will be funny to see the anatomy of the less "average human" characters (Zangief, Saggat, etc.).
-
I think it looks decent. I don't think you can legitimately expect them to follow up Street Fighter III with something that looks even better.
Ryu's feet are very very buff. That requires intense discipline to train your feet muscles. They were showing Ryu's discipline. Also his apparent sadism with their expressive use of the groin region.
-
Well darn. I just edited this Ryu screen shot to fit a more realistic anatomy, but Photoshop decided to crap up on me. Does this happen to any body else, when you try to save for web, and the program won't respond to anything else you try to click on(cancel, done, save, nada...)?
-
two more screens.

Oh god Ken's face is a flat object :'(
-
Oh dear.
Perspective is a deceptive bitch. I'll leave it at that until I see this in motion, because.
Man... just. Wow.
-
lol @ Ken's face
I think I revoke my decent statement. first shot was pretty decent but, but
-
They seem pretty good to me, detailed background, shirt looks like it has blown back after he fired off the fire ball ... at least its not the HD thing. Something that would annoy me is if that guy keeps his back to the fight scene the whole time. Someone just launched a fireball and he is still staring at his soup? Maybe I'm just sensitive to it because apparently thats how my cat says f*ck you by sitting with her back to you.
-
Look at the bottom left corner of the 3rd screen, the foot looks flipped and also ridiculously twisted to the side.
-
*actually does barf on the keyboard this time*
seriously though, I wouldn't judge this game until its motion. These shots look absolutely terrible, but any of these shots would only actually be visible to the eye for about 1/30th of a second...I'm not defending it or anything, just saying; this is a game that perhaps more than all others is dedicated to constant spastic motion, and judging it in any other context is pretty ludicrous IMO!
But Ken does look F*cking retarded.
-
finally got my pc back running after getting a v-v-v-virus. twas scary.
-
The weirdest thing is the huge feet. Why huge feet? Maybe I just have small feet...
-
I wonder whatever keeps studios from making Monkey Island 3 kind of traditional animation. I think it can look really neat, works for bigger resolutions and would suit a 2D fighter perfectly fine.
That wig-helmet of Ken looks just ridiculous...
-
Hi everybody! Just popin back to leave a link.
Here's a youtube old-school game reviewer i've just found out, which actually is quite agreable: the Happy Videogame Nerd.
How is he relevant? Well, he's reviewing a couple of Nes games that have really awesome graphics, and are mostly unheard of.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2IkkkfAc9k&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2IkkkfAc9k&feature=related)
And you're actually getting reviews for games you end up wanting to play.
(Not as fun as hearing "shitload of fuck" and "fuckload of shit diarrea", but has it's pros.)
-
Maaan, this guy is just so damn delightful (: I love him!
-
Any guy that reviews Journey to Silius is A-OK in my book!!
-
does he actually review wild guns? i was superpsyched to see that in the intro
-
OMG OMG METAL STORM! i love this guy! I thought i was the only one who ever played the game.
As for Journey to silius, it had nothing of it's own really, but it was so well excecuted that it makes for a great game anyway.
Funny how this guy is a lot like how i imagined Jad to be.
-
dude has great taste and is wonderful to watch. :y: :D from me too

Funny thing, this guy is a lot like how I fail to be ):
(be glad that I'm not doing these reviews, now you don't have to hear my hideous swedish accent > _<)
Anyway, here's me hoping he'll bust out some pure game boy love and review castlevania II: belmont's revenge!
Because it's the best linear castlevania game (: ... Or ok, it's better than I and II and definately castlevania whatsitsnameagain for the gameboy. And I prefer it over the two SNES ones. Mainly because of the music. The music is great. The best for the gameboy IMO. The konami sound is so juicy it sounds like an acoustic instrument! (<- this is nostalgy speaking)
seriously though, dl it from zophar.net or something if you like them old chipz (:
-
Whelp, Mayweather won. And that sucks, as once again, we're stuck with another egocentric champ. I was really hoping Hatton would hand him his arse, but I guess nice guys finish last. One of these days, pride will be struck down with a mighty, metal, thunder clap, silencing all who witness it.
@current on-topic, off-topicness: Heh, wow, I thought I was the only one who played Metal Storm! I remember how awesome the animation was, and thought the gravity portion of the game was kick arse as well. This guy NEEDS to review Crash 'N' The Boys: Street Challenge for the NES, or he will burn in Hades...

Rock climbing adventures! This is a 5.10d route called Diving for Rocks - this is just the middle section, but its the hard segment, or "crux," of the climb, which involves a big reach move from an inverted, fingertips only position:

BTW, in these smilies :D actually looks happy and not completely demented and on drugs.
Which is nice.
Okay, so he looks demented and on drugs in a happy way, but that's still better than the original smilies ):

Know what REALLY looks happy?

seriously, when will the new smilies be implemented into the forums?...I'm tired of looking at the smilie banner at the top of the page, and nothing is going on with them...
(ugh, I dare you to spell smilie 10 times, and see if the spelling doesn't lose complete meaning to you within a couple of seconds...)

I guess when we finish a whole set?
get to work, people! !yus!

Okay, I've been trying to figure out what the triangles do in Helm's avatar. :mean:
What I've got so far is that they're there to lead you to the eyes of the image, considering that edge directions on both sides of the picture lead to the eyes.
Anybody else got an idea?
-
subconscious, I wasn't thinking of any theoretical thing when I made them, just tweaked until they were in a pleasing construction. Whatever you're trying to find is going to be new to me, on the conscious level.
-
Aww, kinda dissapointing.
I stand by my eye theory, though! !yus!
-
I don't think the fact that it was subconscious should stop you from thinking about what they add to a piece, just because Helm didn't add them for any specific reason doesn't mean they don't do anything for the piece... brains are complicated, and often you will do things subconsciously for reasons you are not aware of... I find this happens to me in writing.
of course, that doesn't guarantee that they add something or that there is a tangible reason for it, but it still may prove worthwhile to think about regardless of the artist's intent
-
That's what I mean. Find what you need to find, just don't necessarily say 'ooh what a clever Helm!' at the end of it, just say 'oh what complicated brains we all have'.
-
i dont know if i've said this before or if i even said the same thing, but looking now, the triangle pattern kills horizontal transfer within the piece and makes it very "architectural" in the sense that you can't move it. that's the opinion of course of someone who likes overdone motion in all pieces, so take it or leave it.
-
My compositional preferences are largely instinctual and not very good at that, and not informed of theories you might be taught to at school and therefore I cannot really see what you're talking about. I don't like overdone motion in all pieces personally, and most of my art feels pretty still therefore. Most of all, portraits, of course.
-
As long as we're analyzing... ;)
I think it's interesting what Helm did because the positive and negative space in the background both create arrows that fight against each other. This creates a very bizarre tension that constantly tugs the picture both left and right at the same time. You get the feeling that at any second the portrait is going to rip itself to pieces. The twitching animation only accentuates that. Now what would be really interesting is if Helm intended to create the feeling of tension but actually achieved the effect subconsciously.
[EDIT] The fun thing with recognizable shapes is that you get all the psychological baggage that comes with them. One of the few times I enjoyed myself in school is when we got to play with that.
-
Not really disappointed that no conscious effort was involved, but it was a very basic response, and as my creative writing teacher once said: You know, deep down.
Anyway, on a different but still Helm related note,
I intended to submit this as a Secret Santa bonus gifto thing, but since he's not an entrant it doesn't really make sense, and this is as good of a place as any:
for helping me with my Secret Santa gift and being one of the most invaluable people on this board (and that's saying quite a lot!) :-*
-
When I first saw the triangle "wuv" in Helm's pieces, they didn't necessarily read much into my mind, other than "hmm, another triangle piece. This guy must like triangles or something...". And that was it. And I'll agree in that for some reason, all his pieces seem kind of static, even if they do depict some type of movement...even his animations as well, heh(not trying to be mean, mind you)
I guess that's why I consider Miascugh his opposite, as Mia tends to leave some of his work untidy and unfinished, yet they seem so fluent, in the way he depicts them. Very curvy and such, which is "how I like em'."
Ptoing is always humorous, though technically sound with his stuff.(not that I'm techinically sound)...
Ooh, and Bulought's pieces...(rant's on...)
So yeah, everyone has separate thoughts on what they see, so you know...(echo...)
-
the triangle is perhaps the most recognized symbol of strength, so helm is clearly compensating for some form of power.
I just thought it was a little reference to the C64, how he and ptoing sometimes make pixelart with lots of triangles for it
-
not informed of theories you might be taught to at school
well, i didn't have to go to school to know that crossing lines halt motion, and since it's in keeping with your personal preferences, neither did you :P. It's all based (ideally) on concepts that can be discovered, and a good school merely strives to foster that discovery and is constantly inviting students to challenge what is presented; students are not just 'fed' information in the same way that those without a formal artistic background don't 'starve'.
Mia is very fluid, yes, and panda too, though they complement each other (panda being a fan of polished smooth curves and mia being a fan of expression)
ptoing's compositions are a very interesting thing to study because they are surprisingly grounded in classical thought, with or without his intention ^^. I use his pieces to justify the idea that practice and a good eye can rapidly ascertain what years of study can struggle to define*.
* the attempt of definition in itself flawed, as there are an infinite number of scenarios which present and infinte number of choices, with many of them valid and many "definitions" turning out flawed. Thomas Kinkade went to art school and learned all the technical skills and design theory and has yet to produce a good piece.
-
Sherman, thank you. That's lovely. Thanks for the gift and the kind words, they mean lots.

A rather interesting tutorial from the Battle for Wesnoth forums: how to go from scanned sketches to small sprites. http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16760 (http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16760)
That's a really really bad way to make sprites, I think.
-
Doesn't everyone have their own way that works for them though?
-
I'm pretty sure if this dude learned to pixel in a more controlled and streamlined way his sprites would end up being much better.
If everyone had their own way that worked for them there would be no need for the critique process. This dude has a way. That works for him. It's not the best way, I think. There's others that would work for him much more.
-
Are you sure there is one best way? Don't all painters (classical and modern) work in different styles and ways?
-
Depending what you are working with there are certain ways to do things. Such as fat over lean for oils and so on. BUt of course there are always more than one ways to do things, but I have to agree with Helm. I think that is a rather roundabout way of doing things, not efficient at all imo.
Panda will be really happy when he sees this.
-
Are you sure there is one best way? Don't all painters (classical and modern) work in different styles and ways?
There is no one best way. There's ways that have been proven to work for most people. They might not work for him, but judging from the looks of it his method is not his response to having tried 'proper' methods and having had them not work for him, it's just how he ended up working in the lack of any training in most methods we employ here. It's a method that creates as I see it, a limited scope of spritework that isn't controlled very much (and control is everything in pixel art) which also takes more time to make probably than it would strictly have to. Not good for professionals, and of doubtful use to people learning to pixel also.
Also no, not all painters work in different ways. Their styles are something we've said they have (and that's a whole different discussion) but their ways are mostly similar, though there are of course exceptions. I'm sure Klimt and Rembrandt would be fascinated by each other if they were ever to meet but they wouldn't actually find their processes to be very alien.

Hmm.
Is the TR&L-thread very hard to manage if people manage to speak freely about the matters that concerns the links posted there (sincere question)
I feel that discussions have a tendency to be quite non-spontaneous when you have to jump between threads just to have a fruitful discussion. O:
EDIT
Umm, speaking of nothing, this random-8bit:y sound effect generator is very simple but quite rad if you're lazy (:

EDIT AGAIN
MAN, if rippers are a race, I'm a racist = A= What the heck is up with the complete denial? How do you become like that!? It's like, on pixelation boards, there are the normal guys who do their stuff, and then there's the rippers who always act kind of polite until you post evidence (often VERY CLEAR such) and then you get met with-
COMPLETE DENIAL
and when you further stress the point you get met with ANGER AND INDIGNATION-
As if it was inhuman to actually get people to use their creativeness and make their own art. As if they actually believe themselves, 100%, that they have created these pixel-rips without reference.
I mean, that totally scares me! How can you get so angry and defend NOTHINGNESS, LIES, to that extent? They're like the ghosthacked guys in ghost in the shell. It's like they have fake memories and values that they're programmed to fight for. How do you become like that? Man, I don't get it (:
(Ah, and I'm not really referencing to the case where the swordsman guy got totally angry with me and stuff, that was more a misunderstanding from his side (regarding the rules) and my side (regarding the ripped-ness) and much of a border-line case. I'm rather speaking about post incidents in this board, which totally puzzle me.)

The Sufjan Stevens Christmas album is the best Christmas album I've ever listened to, ever.
-
speaking of albums.
is it just me, or has all the recent metal just sucked? the last decent things i heard were serj tankian (although he was a bit softcore), and the ozzy album that came out ages ago (still a bit softcore for my tastes). i was also a bit fond of the trivium cd, and the most recent slayer album (christ illusion)
-
everyone has their total dick moments, and it's usually when they are embarrassed or threatened.
with rippers inviting both embarrassment and threats, they usually are the ones to have total dick moments.
a lot of rippers too think that they wont get caught, adding to the embarrassment.
ripping is all about an ego trip, making others think you are better than you are. to get called out in the middle of an ego trip will heighten the dickiness.
rippers are not concerned with anyone but themselves, which makes them prone to dickiness.
in short, rippers - dicks.

My experience tells me that these people are simply spoiled. They've learned from their life with friends and family that if you defend your lies enough and act indignant enough eventually people will cave in and accept them as truth. When this simply doesn't fly when caught for ripping they just explode in a big way. They'll come up with the most outrageous stories and they'll get all moral highground on you, they'll try any rhetoric trick they can to justify the simple fact that they were misleading people to get asspats about how good they are at something they're not.
Think about it, think about the person that desire so much acceptance and admiration that he's willing to shortcut straight to being awesome. Think how insecure this person is and how much he must constantly defend his ego from even the slightest prod. It's not so difficult to see that they'll pile on lies upon lies when challenged. Eventually they give up, I think, and that's a really learning experience for them. A lot of kids rip and get found out, make a huff and then when it all lies down in a few months the lesson has sunk in and they try to do things differently from then and on. This is why we ban for a year and not forever, but also not for like, a week. To have that lesson be attached to a reprimand that has gravity. A year is not forever for you and I, but it sure sounds like forever for the 14 year old kid that ripped here to get instant gratification from respect and asspats. He wanted it HERE and NOW. And now he might get it a year from now, and then it's not for sure. It's a good thing to have this happen to you.

There is a lot of good metal out there. You just have to look harder than the mainstream. Try listening to Arsis, Behemoth, Decapitated, or Nile. If you don't like the growling and you're into a little more blues-y style, try Electric Wizard or High on Fire.

Wouldn't be impossible to manage, but the "Don't chitchat" thing is for tidiness sake, so the thread doesn't turn like the mess it's previous incarnation was.
Also, if there are no conversations going on, it would be easier to find what you are looking for.
I mean, I don't mind a single comment towards whatever link, but due to human nature or something, there is always someone that would have to disagree with it or continue with the comment, and then someone else and so on. So it would be better to cut from the beginning.

@eck: Yes, yes, but we are NOT mind readers, and can go only by what you type. And from the bands that you initially listed...IN MY OPINION, some of those bands didn't quite scream true metal. Don't think I've ever thought of System of a Down as Metal. More Alt. Rock. Ozzy was one of the starter ups of metal back in the day, but even now, his stuff seems more rock than what most consider metal. Also, some of the bands you listed above, (Static X, and Puddle of Mud) still leave me questioning tastes in what Metal really is. And I don't think you have to go into such detail in naming every single metal band to cover your case, man. Remember, there are some opinionated metal heads here, so when you say "all recent metal sucked", you have to know there is going to be a response back. Not everyone is always in agreement.
However, I leave judgment to the eyes of the beholder, so like what you like, and try not to be offended by other's opinions. We all have different tastes, and opinions so leave it at that. Also, the silly debate over what is and isn't metal is VERY played out, so let's call it square, and laugh it off...ay?
@MiaScuff: (*Slaps Chest* I....Have made FIRE! I love Cast Away) Noice'...Can I have some?
-
thats nice that you have your oppinion and all, but you still haven't recommended to me any artists or given me any ideas as to where to find some new stuff?
-
I dunno if Puscifer is metal but if you like Tool they're worth checking out.
-
I dunno if Puscifer is metal but if you like Tool they're worth checking out.
oh tool. I am big fans of them, and a perfect circle. Quite good to pass the time with I do say.
-
Have you checked out Sepultura or Krisiun? Both good Brazilian metal bands.
-
So...
what's the deal with the ripper thread/post getting so much attention(http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=5639.0), when some other posts don't even get a reply....
:yell:
we need a good "fad" on the forum to check out like the chibi avatar fad of 2004(?), or the fighter sprite thing a couple years ago,
just a thought..
-
Because anger elicits a lot more of a response then neutral feelings.
-
my point exactly, surely this forum isn't for humilating users
-
It takes a pretty big effort not to speak up when you feel your time has been wasted, though, so while it's not a good thing to do, it's not really something you can stop.
Also, I disagree about the need for a fad! Wouldn't you rather represent yourself with your own idea instead of someone else's?
-
some of you guys are probably aware of these neat illusions, and perhaps this exact one:
but make one of them, they're pretty cool :)

i just don't buy the 6.5 heads thing for an adult. I'm a young, short guy and my head is on the large end (about 9 inches high), still putting my height of 65 inches at just over 7 heads.

hollow face illusion is my god
-
thats nice that you have your oppinion and all, but you still haven't recommended to me any artists or given me any ideas as to where to find some new stuff?
Machine Head, At the Gates, Arch Enemy, Bring me the horizon, Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Lamb of God, Nile, Animosity, Nochaa
just download or buy stuff you think you might like... if you do, great... if not, don't buy any more of their CDs. I would rather go out to HMV and enjoy listening to Cds and forming my own opinions rather than ask a bunch of forum whores :P
-
Krisiun
Machine Head, At the Gates, Arch Enemy, Bring me the horizon, Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Lamb of God, Nile, Animosity, Nochaa
thanks, checking these out now :D
.. and how the hell could i forget lamb of god in my list? D:
-
If you seriously check any of those bands out, please be sure to check out At the Gates. Quality music from a quality band.
-
And.. this is so far from metal but It's one of mah favorites.. Losing My Religion by REM.. ahh and Pet by a Perfect Circle. Kind of stalker-ish, but still very fun to listen to.
-
Malor, respect for the taste in music. Tool & APC have been on the top of my fav-bands list for years. Unfortunately recently i haven't been listening to them as much, which is a shame. Although when i do the awesomeness is all the more potent, ey wot.
.Tak, i don't think i've seen that, although i can guess what it does (helped by Zol...), i'm gunna try making it tomorow, if my comp and printer wanna work together. :P
PS. does anyone else keep accidentally forgetting there's more recently updated topics below all the stickied threads in the General section? I do, cus they're all pushed below the page ): Tis ever so slightly annoying.. I guess i can handle it tho. ^-^

Most of that list you posted is populated by totally shit metal (in my opinion) or not metal bands (by anyone's standard) and the few good ones thrown in I guess you can't tell them apart yet. Keep listening and patterns will emerge eventually. Learn more about the bands you listen to and place them in their context on what was happening at the time when they were active. There's a world of difference between Job for a Cowboy metalcore shit and say, Candlemass and you're not yet equipped I guess to detect it.
As for something to listen to, I suggest you listen to less 'metal' and pay more attention to the Heavy Metal you listen to. Read the lyrics, think about the concepts, think about how the songs work and what makes them work and then realise this new metal/alternative metal/tasteless metal you listen to fails on many levels regardless of having a cool riff here and there.
-
I have to second that. Really if you just start actually *listening* to music instead of just hearing it, you realize a majority of it is completely worthless and identical.
And, I'm not suggesting them or anything, but as far as newer stuff goes: Cephalic Carnage. Just saying.
EDIT:
Ho, ho, ho.

music 'scussion!
Lupe Fiasco's new album is out and I'm quite sure it's the second coming of Jesus.
Not much more to say, I can't get enough this guy, love all the references to street fighter, mario, etc
even star trek :P

Weird. I was listening to it just a minute ago. :) I like it so far. Definitely better than a lot of the crap they've put out lately. ;)

Off topic from all the other off topicness. But I was wondering if they'll be a Pixelator challenge thing this year? Was looking at last years, looked like sooo much fun.

@pan i recall someone mentioned they would start it after secret santa and the new year.
... and in other news, i just beat 'half life: blue shift'. quite an acomplishment for a gaming newbie like myself :hehe:

One of my presents was a fantastic anatomy book, and another was a nice anatomical figure..thingy that is great for reference. AND I was also given a lot of prismacolor pencils and water colors pencils ^^

16, still got presents too :P
But it wasn't too much. But that's also cuz we're moving and we can't spare too much money.
The house is kind of a wreck, needs alot of work. But it'll be awesome when it's done.
Funny though, we looked in that street how a fixed house would look there.
And there was one of the done houses for sell for 100 grand more.
Funny thing is that the guys that bought that one are also completely redoing the interior.
And we're doing it for 100 grand less, even though they're the same houses. (More or less of course, same size house and garden though. Same year too, both corner houses.)
-
I'm 18 and still got presents from my parents :P
-
14 but I didn't get that many presents. Money, though, and that's always a plus. :y:
-
Merry Christmas!
Been a good'n, personally.
I got woodless pencils, a bike, and Metalocalypse season 1 :D.
-
Clothes, an electric razor, a new bible. The funny thing was it's all what I asked for and I was psyched :P
Metalocalypse season 1 :D.
I would like.....a hundred beers.
-
got a 19" LCD tv with an included dvd player. that means i can finally play my wii again properly x__x. The tv i had was like 10 years old ..didnt have the proper jacks in the back and i've also lost the converter for it which means i cannot change it to input mode or whatever LOL
-
A registered version of Game Maker (or rather, a Game Maker registration) (;D) some pants, a book on how to watercolor, a Gil Scott-Heron CD, and some things yet to be discovered.
Cool :)
-
I got 95 dollars. I have a few ideas of what I might possibly get.
A scanner? Promotion? Gamestuffs? Oh dear.
-
i bought myself a new monitor
-

orange box is calling you.
-
can't for the life of me get this monitor calibrated correctly
-
Hm, The Orange Box, eh? I'm not sure my little ol' laptop could even handle it!
On a completely unrelated note, do any of you guys use the few apps out there that let you draw online with other people? For the longest time I was trying to assemble a sketch group in my area, but the interest just wasn't there. So, I'm thinking... an online sketch group is the next best thing? I think, for myself at least, it would be a really awesome way to get motivated about drawing whenever you're in a slump.
What say you folks?
-
Wii, Rayman 1 & 2, Mario Galaxy(mmm), Guitar Hero 2(I like the selection better than 3), and a nice 19" LCD monitor...
I'm just worried my monitor isn't displaying the right colors(seems alright... 'except for a few things that I just don't remember having that color), and I dunno what to do... I haven't pixelled yet but I dunno if I'm gonna end up making a piece with ugly ass colors or not. Oh, and anyone with experience with monitors and such... mines makes a high-pitched noise when I first turn it on for the first few seconds--is it something to worry about? It goes away after a few seconds but I'd hate for it to crap out on my after the warranty is up.
-
I was working xmas day :P
double pay and a day in lieu, so it was alright.
Plus it meant I didn't get dragged to church with all my extended family I only see once a year.
Had 6 people ring up asking if we rented Wii games, I've been getting one call a day for the last 2 weeks, and well, we don't
pretty stupid since our 360's are all broken, we have one ps3 and it's been rented twice, it will take years to make the money back off it.
Plus the Wii has tons of party games, and they are easily the most popular rentals.
So yeah, I got a nice suitcase for when I go to the states in April, a book on optical illusions (I think I've seen absolutely everything in it before) 2 books on davinci, one entitled "genius", another book about someone who solved the greatest scientific problem of his time, a 3D puzzle with all these balls you have to connect in specific ways, couple boxes of chocolates, some wine, a fan that you can display messages with as it spins, some scratchies, some gaming mags, a calander, and 4000 wii points.
So right now, I am absolutely rocking the Yoshi's Story, I'm glad it's just as fun as I remembered it (and sickeningly cute)
Oh, I actually had a fair bit of customers xmas day, pretty much just an average day.
Although there was one dude who came in the morning to get 5 discs resurfaced, he must've been real lonely coz he stayed the whole hour and a half to wait for them and I talked with him the whole time, poor guy :(

Apparently we'll get to see it in motion on the 1up show tommorrow, I'm guessing they'll just show Ryu VS Ken though (even if it would be interesting to see some of the other characters).

OpenCanvas 1.2 is freely available in some form, and is supposed to be pretty great for this sort of thing!

Yeah, I really need to see this in motion at this point. Final judgment on the graphics for me happens then. The shots are extremely inconsistent in quality (in my 3D knowledge-lacking eyes) otherwise.

Thanks for the tool suggestions! Though, I was mainly curious if any of you guys would be interested in forming the 'online sketch group' that I mentioned in the post. :P

Mario Galaxy is sort of too easy and too linear, in my view. Although it's still really good.
-
Has anyone ever bought one of those DS bundles off of Walmart.com? I think I'm going to give in and buy a ds, and I want one of those little mushroom sleeves but I'm not sure if they let you choose or you just get whatever random one.
I'll need to get some games, too. Hrm.

RAUUUUGH :yell:
I hate photoshop and I hate digital art.
How the fuck do you guys use this shit? It's terribly imprecise and and bullshit and fuck. It's the only medium I've used that I cannot use worth a shit!

ohgodohgodohgod
Bah. The stream isn't loading right (or gamevideos, for matter) at all, for me. Why do they have to make these needlessly huge video files? 500 megabytes, just for SF footage.
Better be good.
EDIT: Youtube for those who are impatient, like myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-IuPwIKQ1s
It looks... okay. Definitely doesn't give off a 3D feel, but, eh. Everything has a really plastic look to it.
-
yea 600mb download for MAYBE 45 seconds of actual game footage is a little excessive! the "show" is mostly some geeks ranting about past street fighter pro-level specifics, pretty annoying. I think the game looks MUCH better and more cohesive in motion than it does in stills. Still not very excited about it though!
-
I hate the new fucking censorship. :mean:
-
???
The ONLY thing it effects if fuck, and it hardly does so at that.
-
ya, im not really sure what the point of having it say 'vuck' all the time.

last time ti came up someone called it an "inside joke" or something

Watched the gameplay footage. Took a few shots.

They've certainly taken some interesting choices on what to abstract. Detailed characters, lighting and textures with some "painted" elements. People with mostly realistic looks yet stubby limbs and overdimentioned hands, feet and heads. Those are some interesting faces Ruy is pulling off there. They struck me as odd when I saw them in motion, but kudos for making them a bit more alive than the Tekken manequins. Not really sure what is happening with Ken though. Twisted posture with the head floating somewhere. I can't pull that pose at least.
Streetfighter has taken a lot of blame from this place on all sides. It's art, the effect on artists, others view of pixelart, scewed human proportians, the game industry in general. Is there anything you would actually want to see from this side of the industry? Personally I feel the fighting game category desperatly needs innovation (Smashbros mixed things up a bit for example). Any thoughts?
-
Well I, for one, would have liked to have seen street fighter be kept pixel art...
-
