Hey guys ;D
So I saw tsej's thread (http://pixelation.org/index.php?topic=19946.0) and I was inspired to do something of the sort.
I chose going for a ninja though, not a samurai.
And here are the result and progress:

I'm going to change the pose, because I didn't use a ref for it, it was what I had in mind but it is weird or at least the way he holds the sword.
So I'm going to play with the poses and upload an update probably tomorrow.
But any feedback regarding anything from colors to anatomy to idk what is obviously welcome!

Sword-arm looks a bit noodly, try to straighten out the elbow area.
-
So I changed the pose, I think it is better and more logical but I can't get the hand rendered correctly...

Any ideas?

Looks fine to me, maybe extend it one pixel along the bottom of the sleeve on the further-back arm.
Hands at this scale are usually just nondescript squares.

Kind of big update
I went on using the full 64x64 canvas:

It's still a WIP but criticism is as usual always welcome!

I've got these 3 versions, tried to do something with stomach area so it won't look so empty:

He is holding the sword backwards, with the edge facing the wrong direction :)

What do you mean? ???

I think his point is, why would a sword fighter ever hold a sword with the edge facing his body, away from the opponent? I think he's correct that all sword poses across all martial arts hold the edge towards the enemy, so this one would be incorrect.

I don't know, it is a common stance with katanas..

It's funny you post that, because the first picture has the edge facing away from his body and the second one is double bladed, so you actually proved my point ;)

Well, the sharp side faces outward in my sprite, isn't it? D:
Or my eyes are failing me ^^"

The edge is still not pointing down, though. Google kasumi no kamae. Not a single example with the edge down. It's almost impossible to hold a sword like you have depicted. The edge is almost always aligned with the direction of the knuckles. If you raise your arm above your head, it's hard to point your knuckles down unless you bend your wrist in a very awkward fashion which you wouldn't want to do when holding a sword :)

Ah yes, now I get what you were going for originally. The sword is indeed correct then, but I agree that the wrists and arms wouldn't bend that way. For stuff like this, it's best to look up real martial arts stances to get it right. Never look up drawings of samurais and stuff like that.
