A little practice I've just done. The palette was borrowed from Secret Of Evermore.

No no on the double post.
Very nice colors..It's missing a little sometihng though.
-
It needs a lot more polishing, see if you can integrate some of the weathering and damage that's on your reference. The palette is pretty plain, the darker colors are too close and very dull, even for background art.

Heres an example of a great pillar:

not too many colors - give a nice effect too.

I wish I could pixel like Kenneth Fejer does...
Update :

Brand new palette + damages on the column

dont we all.
the weathered version is much better.

I really like the colours of the update fil. I think you'd be better off not having cuts that go all the way through the image, or it looks like the pillar is paper-thin - make them more like dents basically.

Experiment with the palette more, aa to dark where you don't have it. I like this lots.

Thank you so much Helm !
Your edit made me understand quite a few things and it is really really beautiful.
I won't edit the piece anymore, it's just a practice and I don't like spending a long time on the same piece. This one taught me much =)

No prob, that's what we're here for.
