Title: Help with a palette.
Post by: Bollie on September 06, 2016, 02:37:20 pm
Hey, guys! So, recently i decided that i would put together a color palette that i would use for all of my artwork, so it would look consistent and i could work more on shapes. This is what i've got so far:

I don't really like the situation with reds and i still need 2 more colors (for 32). Any help appretiated! :)

I think you've got too much brown, dark brown, light brown and orange brown colors. I think you may need one a bit darker yellow and one intensive and rather dark red. Maybe one dark blue too? If you would like to do some monochromatic artworks, you'll probably very little amount of grey colours. I don't know, maybe I just use gray too many times. :D

So, i cut down on the browns, put a darker yellow in, added an intense dark red, a darker blue, that also works as a grey ;D

Tweaked some colors, i still don't like the browns. They don't fit wood nor do they fit dirt

What is your strategy/pattern/tool/technique for picking these?

I'm trying to learn and figure out the same thing myself

I don't have a real technique. I start with white and a dark color(not black) that i would use for outlines and make a ramp between them. Because i used a bit of blue for the grays i make a blue ramp out of that and so on.. Just using a bit of hue shifting to get to the next color and looking for colors that fit multiple ramps :)

How are you determining what shape to put them in?  ???

The shape is not that important. It is mostly just for me to find colors easily

Do you start with one color you like and go from there? Or multiple colors and try to bridge them?

Also, what's the easiest way to test it and see how it looks?

Thanks and sorry for hijacking your thread with questions

I'm not sure if a one size fits all.  The best way to see if it works for you, is to use it or apply it to some images.  Really just see if you like working with it.   Or use it as a starting point and tweak it later.
I did this piece recently and applied your palette:

Here are some other images with your palette:

I just let Graphicsgale apply the palette for all these.

Colors are something you'll always be trying to get right as long as you remain artistic.  It's just the way it is.   :P

I see. I'll probably try to use it in my artwork and see how it goes. Maybe make multiple palettes :)
