Post by: huZba on November 25, 2008, 07:47:18 pm
Time to replace the old "prime_pixels" avatar with a new one.

Nice! I think it's a bit dark still, makes that reddish lighting on the left side very subtle. Other than the palette, I think it just needs some refining to smooth out all the edges. Can't wait to see it done.

I HUNGER!

(Sinistar)

Would be interesting to see some more likeness to a real skull in the upper jaw teeth cheekbone area. Perhaps the sideburns could be missile launchers? Nothing is pointing straight forward now, and that bothers me, because I imagine the guy being a shmup boss who shoots missiles. And laser through the eyes. Little things that flip open to reveal turrets.

I really like it, but isn't the nose opening a bit too big and/or too low/close to the teeth?

I think the light in the left eye socket is too bright for that side of the face (which is in shadow).

Both eyes feel emissive rather than lit in my humble view.

Cleanup, stronger secondary light, added skull likeness, moved the nose. Missile launchers.... hmm.. pending for now, though the idea of making it a shmup boss is tempting. (sinistar used to give me nightmares :-X)
The eyes are supposed to be small lights. I might try editing a bit if they don't read as such.

Yes you did reply and your reply was an one-liner asspat. You've been in Pixelation long enough to know better, though, so I don't know what's up. I deleted that post. Please keep it more critique-heavy. Praise can come when a piece is done.

huZba: darkness hugs the black lineart too pillow-like on many places. I'd generally clean up the planes much more and avoid single-pixelness noise until I were to feel satisfied with the volumes.

Since your secondary light is red, the purple saturated shadow confuses the color identity, I'd go with something cooler.

I think likeness to a real skull can be good but it doesn't have to be organic. That would make it feel like a spray painted human skull. I think it would be more effective to paraphrase the organic stuff into mechanical components of the same relation and proportion as a skull. Kinda like those human faces made from vegetables. You find a suitable fruit. Robotic shapes are... carved and simple, aligned, flat surfaces, curves, circles... in general, easy to compress into a 3D description (in a CAD program for example).

If you look on the sides of the nose on a human skull, you'll see 2 holes. I'm guessing blood veins go through there. Anyways, those holes could be made into... something geometrically simple and robotic. Vents, rivets, screws. Just an example. Edit: there are also holes in the 'eyebrow' bone and jaw.

Aye, update.

An old animation called "dimensions of dialogue" came to mind when you mentioned vegetable heads Arne. I'll have to try that out. Might be a good excuse to introduce some different materials cause it's a bit monotonous atm.
