Title: Top Hat Man, Shading Troubles.

Working one my fighter sprite for King of Sprites thing

But i am having an insane amount of trouble shading it.

Attempt 2 at the top is my favourite.  Looks the best IMO.  The update detracts from the first 2 you had going. 
So I quickly edited attepmt 2.

I don't think the problem is the shading itself, it's just that there isn't any clearly defined light-source. It's basically pillow-shaded. I made a quick edit to show how I think it could be improved.
