It may be me, but the arms seem a bit long.

purposefully done as such. whats the point of proportions if you cant break them for fun?

Some quick, sloppy edits!

I like him a lot - I think the face is not reading particularly well, and his left arm (our right) and his thigh are a little under-rendered I think, though that could be to guide the eye more - I'm not really sure it needs to be fixed.  I really like how you rendered his shoulder, torso and arm, though I agree his forearm is a little long and make-believe.  One slightly hotter spec tone would help I think on some of his muscles.  The main thing you GOTTA fix is he is slightly off-balance - like there is no way that dude is standing up!!  Get that left leg out there, and shade the sucker!  As it is, he looks weird, and the black leg thing is kind of a copout :P

(also in white mode he looks like killface)

i should have done the old pit of neck to ankle thing for his balance. with the limited rendering i was trying to keep in some classic fighter methods. his left arm doesnt have many highlights so it looks farther into the bg and his leg is left without highlights and is minamally rendered because its under his pretty massive upper body and i think its not too much of a dramatization to keep it highlightless. thanks for the edit, mang.

I say just redo the entire back leg and put some detail into it so that it can compete with the front leg to some extent.
The back arm isn't entirely black, so why should the leg be?
For a suggestion, i would make the back leg come way forward so like the foot is below the elbow or something
those neck muscles are crazy on his skull, lol..
Some reason im liking the waiste area and thigh.

edit: also when you raise an arm, your shoulder usually raises as well.

I say that the leg can be moved forward to give him a better center of gravity without removing the relaxed nature of his pose:
(http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/8572/neweditdi0.png) (incomplete edit requires the highlights on the leg yet)
I would say that though the arm is in the background a bit it actually looks as though the forearm is further forward and that he is looking through the gap so i would up the highlights further on it. Also the main shadows falling on the legs would be from the arms not so much the entire uperbody I would say put some more highlights into them as well but don't go overboard. Also up the detail for the area around the eye as it seems a little flat on second glance.
***
did this at the same time as you did yours :(

Well your update seems to look the best right now but i still think work more into the face

Pleases me fine, good sir, it pleases me fine.

By the way, this edit looks good in terms of center of gravity. Oh, and I don't think strict anatomy applies to this figure, nor should it even be considered. Nice job, Ryu!

Nice update!  One thing I just noticed is that his relaxed bicep (his right, our left) is actually quite a bit more huge and flexed than what should be his flexed bicep - the one on the raised arm.

god, i swear this great critique is to awesome to be anywhere other than pixelation. thanks for the edit, zeid. i believe the pose in your edit isnt what i wanted for him, but the leg you did is definitely good reference for futher pieces. i think ill just take all the highlights off of his forearm than put them all on it.

thanks b.o.b : DD

ohh, nice call adam, will do.

thanks for the comments guys!
woo! another update:

I think you lost a lot going from black and white to color. Also, I like necks.

I believe he's pixeling his character. changing the head like that would loose the original intention, great edit part from david.

I do think his head should be higher, it gives the impression he's arching forward. I think i'd be better adding more of a neck.

great progress.

Looks good. I don't like the eye atm because it sticks out too much - more like a ping pong ball to me. Also black eye might look better.

the speech bubble and finger ruin this.

if its a matter of how well done the finger and bubble is than tell me how to fix it, if its a matter of taste than dont say it brings it down if its only your view.
either way:(http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/2855/fightermh1.png)

sorry, i didnt mean to sound so harsh.  This is shaping up nicely - yeah it was mainly my personal view - however it just gave it an immature feel to a kickass sprite.

I think it looks a little weird how the line between the pecs and and central line of the abdomin dont line up, maybe shift it 1 or 2 pixels to the right.

Nice stuff, as usual. I think the darkest shade should go back to being darker, though. In the latest versions, you've lost some of the original's definition.

color issues, mostly.

It looks awesome but without the action of flicking off something it seems lacking, more like he is holding his arm there, although if you were to just put a top hat in the hand (as if greeting someone) that would cover up what seems awkward to me by giving a purpose to the stance

i tried to get a likeness of your pallette without making him look washed out. he probably wont ever be, but if he was ever in a game he would seem to be one with the bg with that look.

hooray for alternative pallettes
edit: just got your post, tophat seems like a capital idea!

Such a big sprite would never be one with the backround, and yeah, you could use black really. But the next shade from black should be about 30 lightness or something.

Can't you see that in both of the palette swaps you posted, the shade next to the darkest shade doesn't ramp smoothly into the next lightest one? Too big a jump, too close to black, too saturated.

Do take a look at the knee I edited also.

might be my monitor, or my total lack of good judgement in the ramping area, but i dont see anything wrong.

Your avatar suggests any of the two as well. Calibrate.

Knee fixed.

i much prefer the red palette, it's much more muted and much more flesh like.  Very nice fighter ryu.

I don't know, it looks to me kind of like he could be keeping the sun out of his eyes. I think it'd look amazing if you did a version with dramatic lighting where he's doing just that.
