Hey everyone! So I'm fairly new to pixel art and need some feedback.
This is my RPG style take on a character from my favorite show, RWBY.
Her name is Blake Belladonna and she's one of my favorite characters so i thought "Why not try to draw her?".
Here's a pic of her from the show:

Here's my sprite:

Give me some feedback and criticism!
Thanks!

fixed the image Link. ou have to rightclick on the image, show the image and then copy the url.If you copy the url from imgur it simply won't work.
-
I'd recommend making her a bit taller. Right now, her head is a bit flat, and you could fit a lot more detail into her clothes if there were more space. You also have a sort of outline, but it's way to close to the black you're using for more of her detail. It's not really necessary to have at this size, either.
-
Ok thank you. I'll edit it later.

Here's the redone sprite:

I also need feedback on the eyes, as i'm having a hard time trying to get them right.
-
Good improvement! For eyes, they can be tricky at this scale, try looking at comparable art on google forideas
-
Your work so far looks good! For details on smaller sprites, especially when making eyes, anti-aliasing is super helpful. I used the gray from the cloak to smooth out the harsh borders of the skin.

I personally find it easier to make sprites from a slightly higher perspective, so I also moved some of the features down/reworked the hair. This is a different style than the one you're working with, but I hope it gives you some ideas!
-
Wow. Yours is pretty good but not really how she looks in the show. Her "cloak" is more of a wing type design and she looks too dark and mischievous in yours. Also, yours has too much grey in the face in my opinion. Thanks for the criticism!

Made some minor changes to the sprite.

I'm sorry to say so but... she don't have cat ears, right? It's a ribbon.
Maybe it's worth a try to give her a smaller head like in dotodrymo's edit.
-
She's a Faunus which means she has a trait from an animal. So yes, she does have cat ears.
-
And I already did make her head smaller.
-
Fixed her hair.

Not sure you understood the crit, in the ref you provided she's wearing a bow yet in your sprite the wide expanse between the points makes them look like ears. As far as I'm aware she's not a catgirl in the canon of the show, and if this is an alternate version of the character it'd be wise to mention that in the original post.

Your reaction is just natural, since I was a little provoking with my appointment. But yeah, like Mystery said: This fact wasn't visible in your first post. :)
As to the head: If this is the style you want to go for, okay.
But her actual headshape does make her look chubby, what in fact, she is not. It doesn't hurt to play around with your sprite to learn something new.
-
I didn't mean it in an aggressive way. I was just trying to clear up the misunderstanding. I did not however, say that she was a "catgirl" as MysteryMeat said. I probably should have stated that she has cat ears in the original post though. It was really hard to find a good reference pic of her, so it wasn't one showing her ears.
Here's a pic of her with her ears uncovered.

And another one.

I'll try to fix her head a little more.
-
I've tried to make her head smaller but it just doesn't look good.
-
Post the results anyways so we can give pointers, you're not expected to succeed the first time!
-
K, I barely changed anything though. I'll do it later.
-
Here's what I've got.

Here's the before sprite.

I personally like the first one.

I think her torso and legs look great. Unfortunately the previous posters are correct regarding the size of her noggin'.
Her arms, as well. They make her seem masculine. Trying positioning her slightly differently so as to not exaggerate her biceps.
-
I'm going for an RPG Maker VX kind of sprite, like these...

So her head is supposed to be kinda big.
As for her arms, I'll try to edit them.
-
Is this better for her arms?

Matching the VX sprites is really more about proportion (and they use more colors to shade stuff and stuff). Unfortunately, the VX sprites have very wide shoulders so our friend Blake might be a bit more pronounced than what is accurate.
-
Yeah, I can't shade. And i'm just using those sprites as inspiration basically.
-
Great edit, yaomon! I love the way you did the hair, especially.
Dovahkiin, if I may ask, do you have a specific intention for this sprite? I might have different advice depending on what you plan to use it for.
-
Yeah there are two main problems here
- you are working too small
- you have drawn a flat 2d image, but your inspiration is 3d (well, 2.5d)
Saying you can't shade is no excuse. Google some shading tutorials. Learn about light sources and ambient occlusion. Learn! :D
-
Sorry I've been gone. I moved computers. I really just wanted to try this for fun. No purpose really. Also, where is a good place to learn basic techniques? I'm currently using piskel if that helps.
-
I made a new one completely from scratch. I tried to make her look more 3D in this one.
