Not happy with it just yet. Missing stuff but I can't put my finger on what. Lacks recoil for one thing.
Detailed critique encouraged and appreciated!

I think lasers do not generate any meaningful recoil. None that would be visible.
Maybe make the whole right facing edges/faces of everything in the sprite flash green when it fires for an easy to do neat effect.

Like this you mean?

Laser is just light, why give it a dark outline?
Also, I think in your animations you try to smooth things out too much. The building up of the whole gun could perhaps be funnier if it appeared more clunky...
Same goes actually for the flash effect on his body. With a one or two frame full on flash you might achieve a better effect than this soft brightness fade..
If you don't let it loop so fast, you'll notice that the arm goes back really quickly, I guess it could stay there longer.
Why does the beam appear so softly? Make it come in with a bang! More surprising, and feels stronger! No need to draw those buildup frames.
My quick edit:

Good luck!

The dark outline is for readability in-game. I think the beam will be hard to see without the outline on certain backgrounds. Otherwise I would agree with you about the outline, I prefer without, it does look better.

That's interesting. If you have time I'd like you to develop this further as I'd like to improve my animations. So the issue is pacing, right? You feel like I use too many "transitional" frames? So yeah, discussing this would be neat.
I'm almost done fixing the other things you've mentioned but hearing your input about my animations being too smooth would be interesting to me.

Man, i'm definitely gonna have a bunch of fun doing an edit of this later today, if i can manage time wise! :0'

By all means do!
I checked the video. To be honest, not having recoil makes the animation boring. So we'll just say it's a plasma explosion gun!
Here's where I'm at right now:

Yeah, I think timing and rhythm is very important!
Get some key actions, and play with the space in between! Those actions don't need to take up 20 frames, 3 can be enough, save you work and improve the result
I did a very rushed attempt to give the whole thing some more sense of rhythm, but it didn't turn out very good. I hope it can help anyway. Pay attention to all the moments where nothing happens, and how little frames are needed to whip out the gun! My lower framerate is only noticeable in the gun charge, which is a very linear thing.

Have fun with it :)

I really like the looking down and the sunglasses effect, it made me smile. Well done.

If you want recoil, might as well go all the way

Ok, so. generally i like the toaster character. it could use a bit of design improvement imo, but thats besides the point for this thread.
For the animation, i feel it looks pretty disconnected from the design. where does the laser rifle come from, why is it in there in the first place?
I find it especially weird since a toaster has a natural heat outlet that could be leveraged as a weapon. Why else use a toaster if not use its design for gameplay mechanics?

Still to tired, lack of words. gif says it all anyways :)

Haha, that's brilliant wzl. Maybe there could be the toasters trigger slider on its side revealed after he bows down and he could pull it back with his own hand to charge up and maybe it could wiggle a little in anticipation for the shot. Afterwards, the trigger slider flinging forward upon firing could also provide some believable source for kinetic energy (for some recoil! (Fallout video on that topic was funny btw.)).
