Title: Gameboy palette differences
Post by: makis on January 13, 2010, 11:59:06 pm
Hi
Can any kind soul tell me what are the colours of the original GameBoy palette? The palette provided on the Wikipedia site is quite different from the screenshots i grabbed using BGB v1.2 emulator, and to be more specific:

(From bright to dark colours)

Wikipedia :
196,207,161
139,149,109
77,83,60
31,31,31

BGB Emulator  v1.2.
224,248,208
136,192,112
48,104,80
8,24,32

Any help would be much appreciated!

Rather than looking for some sort of "official" GB palette, I would just make your own tinted greyscale that provides a versatile range of values. Check out the mockups on the follwing link to see what I mean. Just don't use a non-tinted grey. Much too boring.

I imagine you're seeing different values for the greyscale all over the place because they probably didn't have RGB values since that would require extra memory to store the values. That'd be a waste since only the values 0-3 are necessary to denote which greyscale value was to be used.

He means use colours with a bit of saturation, I find green ramps remind me the most of the game boy screen.

Example:
Left is not-tinted, right one is.
