Title: First time posting my stuff here.
Post by: D39 on October 19, 2006, 04:48:45 am
Here are some recent graphics of mine. I tried a different style with these, normally I don't use many colors or Anti-aliasing because I make most of my graphics for use in a game.

I would greatly appreciate any C+C you have, or just advice on pixelling in general (I'm fairly fresh at it skill-wise). :)

(Did this one for fun with some of the colors and the general style of the axe below.)

I like the concept they look really nice, BUT you made them look horribly flat. The axe is ok but the hammer needs some tune ups.

I hope you can learn alittle form this(even though im not the best color picker) to kindof level out your image. Add some dark purple to the blue shades and some dark brownish reds to the yellows or oranges.

I love the axes, however the hammer could use more detail, or be a bit bigger.

First of all, welcome to pixelation.

Well, since an image is worth 1000 words (and more) I just did a fast edit on your hammer.

(While I guess you made a black hammer I took the liberty of making a metallic one.)
Your palettes have really close colors, making your whole image dull (and more because of the color you chose for your background), and this goes for both hammers and axes.
Don't be afraid of using colors with more contrasted tones. Pick them wisely (your hammer had 13+bg colors while my edit has 7+bg).
Once you get practice picking palettes you can take it further and start making your stuff more detailed etc.

Hope the edit helps you.
Good luck

Thanks for the comments so far guys, though I hope someone has a more specific critique for my axe because I'm sure its not perfect.

Sorry I'm not very good at choosing backgrounds, as I mentioned I make most of my stuff for use in a games so I normally just work on a transparent background.  I tried to pick something that would display these better than white because they looked horrible on it.

As for the tips on my palette, I agree that my color choice needs work. I've got to head to school right now but I'll work on an edit once I get back.

I really don't know how much I can make it though, certainly not as good as those edits. Do you think I should consider using preset palettes until I learn how to make better color choices?

Now try to make that Axe look Metal like the Hammer!  That would look very good, and if you do that I cannot wait to see it!   :)

I finished a recolor of the hammer based on the advice you guys gave :) . I think I made it look a bit less boring, any comments?

Very nice upgrade!! Gives it sort of an aqua look. I like it.

Take this as you will, because I am no expert, but it looks like your light is attached to your hammer. ie, your highlight is in the same position with respect to your hammer, not with respect to the surface normal.

lol, assuming you used to (or still do) play graal?  if I were you, I wouldnt waste my time with that game.  they have horrible graphics artists (except for some lance guy) and a lot of the servers arent even pixeled...
about your work:
great edit on your hammer, the starting images needed a lot of work.  good luck pixeling.

I think you're just rotating these, so it looks as if the lightsource is following the hammer.
That's an improvement, but I think you should do them all separately, it'll be harder, but it makes for better work ethics, and that's an important thing in game making.;)

Theres no need to do them each one by one, what you need to do is keep rotated them, however recolor the hammer to match your lighting and shadows.

Nope I redraw them for the 45 degree angle. I just try to make the second angle that I draw match the first one as closely as I can.

I tried making the lightsource remain consistent on the two angles but I don't think it worked out to well. I wasn't able to keep the hammers shape as sharply defined when I was worrying to much about the direction of the light.

Yes I do make my stuff for Graal, but I don't think I'll take your advice. I don't think you can really compare the graphics in Graal to the stuff here because its a completely different aim they're being made for.  Even if they do have horrible graphics artists, that just means I have a better chance of getting my work used on it  :P
