Title: Tree
Post by: rocky_vlc on August 17, 2016, 05:28:46 pm
Continuing with my begginer level, here's a 32x32 tree with gameboy classic palette (4 colours). I know that there's much to do, and I'm discovering a new world working with this lack of colours and tiny res.

I look forward for anyone's comments about lighting, dithering, shape... anything that makes me learn something new!

Thank you all

Just a quick thought about the Gameboy palette. There are indeed 4 colors or tints to use, but one of them will be the transparency. So your sprite can only be technically be only 3 colors if using transparency. I believe...Someone please correct me if I am mistaken.

Other than that, I think the shape is fairly interesting, and certainly reads as a tree.

Thanks both, Jun, It's simply but nice!

Dreadnaught, you're right i think. Well, the thing is that I only thought about drawing with 4 colours and I used the gameboy palette, so the pic has 4 colours which is the important thing to me. Thanks!

You have some nice clusters, but I feel the lightest highlight is a bit wasted due to the lack of contrast. Thoughts above ^ (4 colors + trans, though removing the lightest highlight still works for the piece)
Keep up the good work.

That's what I was looking for, yaomon17!! I thought something was wrong, I'll change the palette, since what really matters is that it has only 4 colours, and, as you said, there's a lack of contrast between the lightest colours, and it will bring me powerful weapon to draw!

Your tree looks more reallistic and it has also 4 colours, the shape I think is the same, isn't it?

Dithering looks good but, I think you could use some more near the part where the tree leaves meet the trunk, Nice work with lighting though!

Trunk is the same, leaves changed slightly

My take with your colors ( background should have been gray but for some reason filling it with gray resulted in greenish )

I tried something more "leafy"/"leavy" I don't know how to say that in english  :-[ something with more leaves:

P.S. I really like yaomon17's take.
