well I've been off pixeling for about a year but I've been lurking here for the whole time, last night i drew something and was surprised at how much better it was than the last thing i'd drawn, seems that practice isn't necessary :D lucky me

6 colours+transparency (2x for all you ff3 users)
C&C very much appreciated, hope i can get around to doing more of this over the holidays
edit:forgot to mention http://www.locustleaves.com/ABsides/21drinking.png as inspiration for the face

I like the portrait, but the things that really look weird are, the big hand, the big foot, and the foot without outline, everything else is okay, try modifiying the things i mentioned and that will be great.
Practice is good.

His feet seem a little clownish.

feet edit, and a bit on the shirt

I move the mouth down and also used the lighter brown in the shadow of his face as a highlight for his hair.I think you need to use highlights instead of just useing darker shades. Also I made the mouth bigger (top and bottom lips). Added a white high light for his face.
As for the standing position I like it,looks good.

I fiddled around with the eyes and couldn't come up with something that looked good. I guess the soild black squares could work. They don't look half bad.

well, thanks for the edit but you've kinda just done everything i was trying to avoid doing :-[
firstly the 'mouth' is the bottom of his nose (if you check the reference he has no mouth)
at first i had highlights but i opted for a more anime style of shading (like in ghibli movies) with a low colour count
and youve given his face emotion, i was trying to go for a very static face, i'm thinking an emotionless character like the hero in dragon quest 8
edit: made him slightly shorter, new fighting stance and wip spell charge

edit2: spell cast and sword edit

Ah, in that case I just wanted to point out that the nose doesn't read well at all. As a nose that is. In my world.
-
i know, i tried but nothing worked :'( so i opted to leave it and hope for some useful critique.

Take a look at your own nose; notice how the main shadows that define the nose are: the bottom of the nose (obviously), the shadows along the sides of the nose, and: the shadows under your eyebrows. Right now your shadows are all separated where they should be part of an entity; the nose. Separating them is not bad per se, but play around with what parts of the shadow to define and what parts to simplify, and you might get a more readable nose!
Good luck.
A ____ mouth would probably help in creating a blank expression so be sure to try it out!

after toying around with it for a while i couldn't add much readability (without making it look terrible) to nose without adding shadows to the rest of the face, which imo didn't look any good. I decided on using a lighter shade for the line on the bottom to try to avoid it being read as a mouth in the first place, also edited the brow shadows a bit. At the size i couldn't get a mouth to look right so i just left it out.

anyway, i think i'm pretty much done with the portrait and would appreciate some feedback on the standing sprites
