Title: Character revision
Post by: Ben2theEdge on April 05, 2007, 10:35:44 am
This is a new take on an older character I had from a game that never got finished. This is definitely still a WIP and I'll be animating him as I get the chance, but any advise so far? If I can find it I'll post the original sprite he's based off of, too.`

Started on a running animation:

His arm is a little stiff 'cuz he's gonna be holding a big honkin' sword

He runs now.

He'll be holding a sword, that's why his arm is so doggone stiff.

Awesome. Is this for the same project as before? The skeleton one?
Is he wearing a shirt under that armor? Doesn't look like it. Might not be the most protective armor.
Is that a dude? The protruding armor makes him look boob-y.
The hair...or is it a scarf...doesn't help.
That is if he is infact a guy. I'm assuming he is due to the fact that you called him a he. And also because of his manchin. But if I cover the face...he look-a like a she.
The legs seem a bit choppy...not as fluid as the rest of the image.
Awesome.

From the speed of his legs, I would expect more nervosity in the poney tail.. but that may be intentional..
to me he looks like a he, but what Xion says' s true (armor a bit booby etc)..
I'm not too sure about the skin on the body/arms .. too much line and not enough shading imo..
but that's pretty good tho! I like it! ;D
can't wait to see the sword!
(I imagine something big with some sparkles on the floor  )

Thanks for the responses, guys!

Xion... this is actually an older project from when I was in highschool. Lately my coworkers have been trying to convince me to resurrect it. And yeah... I've been battling the girliness. I could lose the ponytail but it gives such a great sense of motion to the character. I tried giving him armor that wasn't bra-shaped but it's only marginally helping.

Kakikukeko, yeah I haven't decided whether I like the slow, smooth ponytail or not. I'm still working on the arms/torso; I don't like it much either.

The sword will be huge and probably have a serrated edge... I haven't finished designing it yet but it'll be cool.

Orclaeder, one of these days I'll do a WIP, but basically I start with simple shapes and 1 color and just quickly make a rough sketch of the character. Then I take that and refine it until it looks smooth. Then I'll go in and add the detailed body parts one at a time; I usually do the head, then torso, then legs, then arms, then finishing details. Any details or outlines or shading gets saved for last.

just google "animation with photoshop" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=fr&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=nPm&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=animation+with+photoshop&spell=1) for exemple
you can use other programs like graphics gale, pro motion from cosmigo, even Flash could be used, I guess.. (use google again to know more about thes softs, you can also download a trial version..)
I m sure if you use the search button here you 'll find many answers to your question...

I hate animating in photoshop; I actually use a free program called Graphicsgale.

GGale isn't really free...But yeah, the trial version is pretty much completely functional. (Can't save as gifs, but you can easily roundabout that.)

Oh, and I must say I enjoy the smooth-moving ponytail.

I'd change the body's colors and armor design, right now it seems like an exact copy of Saint Seiya's (a.k.a. Knights of the Zodiac) Pegasus.

Nice animation!

I like the running animations.  I also like the style of the character :).

I really like the motion and the character, reminds me of a Megaman Zero sprite (which is no bad thing :) Looks like he would be a fun character to control too which is very important in a game in my opinion.

I would love to see an animation tutorial of your technique, even if it`s just a small one. Hopefully you will get around to making one soon, maybe when you work on your next piece you could log the process? I`m currently doing this with a piece of my own.
