Our custom smileys own. And while we love them, it's about time for a renewal.
Ever wanted to have them your way? Now it might be your chance!
For the first part of this activity, we simply need a smiley template for being able nail all the other smileys afterwards (which are about 41 if memory serves me well). So, long story short, you will have 2 weeks to come up with smiley designs you would like to see used on Pixelation. Then, we will pick our favourite and carry on with the second part.
Rules:
- All the submissions must be a replacement for :)
- Your design should be around 20x20 pixels.
- Multiple submissions are more than welcome.
- All designs must be your original work, completely.
Due date for this part of the activity is June 4th.
So start pixelling while it lasts, and good luck!
Disclaimer: By submitting a design, you are agreeing and allowing Pixelation to use it as we might see appropiate. While we won't use the submissions for economical purposes (e.g. sell it), you shouldn't expect to be given credit whenever your smiley is used.

Will 25x25 do? Here.
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f291/TurboLento/smiley.png) ...and now Ptoing compliant: (http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f291/TurboLento/smileySmall.png) 16x16
...I have no idea what i'm doing.
-
too big i would say, you have to think about that smileys generate gaps in the vertical textflow which can get annoying if they are too huge. I for my part would like 16x16 smileys best.
-
i hope this test turns out well (http://imagehost.ensellitis.com/imagesv2/5499532766smtest.gif)
I'm still going to change it though, not final...
-

that turned out odd. Tweaking may ensue.

wow, I must be weird. I'll probably make others.

Nice one Pixelfish .
Here's a chubby one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/ejay_pix/ejchubby.gif)
And a horny one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/ejay_pix/ejhorny.gif)

A test. Pretty bad. D:

damn you, i was working on a block smiley. Yours is better than mine would have been anyway.

I fully support this endeavour.

ahahahah, damn hannes that is wicked :D, If you make a full set of those I promise that I will put them in as a selectable set. I would soooo use them. Just make sure you make versions of every smiley we have :V
-
(http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/7725/forumsmileyxe1.gif)
way too near to the current icon but I didn't have any good ideas :/
block icons are a great idea I think. gj, junkboy, yet my favourite entry :)
-
not as good as junkboy's cube-face, but ill post it anyway.

//EDIT:
heres another, simple one:

Haha same.
I think square pixelly smileys would be a good idea.
-
Okay, my initial idea trumps all of yours, but because the pixeling failed, here's a hint of what you should be doing:
Goat smilies
-
a think a slightly smaller version of larwicks avatar would make some good smiley material.
-
Whelp, I guess I'm the only one who is going for the splatter effect, eh?
and of course, some self-lovin'(has nothing to do with the challenge, to be honest...)
...Well, basically, none of these are legal, in terms of the rules, and past posts. The top smileys are actually about 25x25, which is too big, I believe. But there are still a couple days left, so I'm sure you guys will pull out some out of the "BOX" creations, by then.

junkboy's reminds me of those things from Megaman, at least their heads.
-
(http://miascugh.ptoing.net/pixels/pixsmiley.png)
Obviously too small, I was just toying around with the traditional approach in theme-friendly colors.
-
I think 12x12 is so small it really might as well be 1bit
-
16x16 pixels should be enough for anybody!

I really like these, but I have to wonder what's wrong with the old smilies?
Will the option of different smiley themes be available?

What? no stop signs!?!?!

Great entries everyone! keep em coming.

Smiles you can pixel with! :o
An interesting idea...
-
yeah, I really like that idea Rydin, it would allow more challenges too.
is your mockup an actual sprite...cause i'm not seeing it.
-
Heh, funny you do that with squared faces.
At some point I was considering to do an activity like that early this month, but lack of time killed it, heh.
Practically we would be pixelling "pixels" with faces using the board's colors (or similar) and then make different compositions with them.
I really like these, but I have to wonder what's wrong with the old smilies?
Will the option of different smiley themes be available?
There is nothing wrong with the old smileys, just trying to get more smiley sets.
And yeah, I believe they will end up being selectable so you can pick whichever you like (as long as the forum has an option like that).

TRIANGLES!
(Yeah, they suck, I know)
No, they don't suck. In fact, these are my favorite, out of the whole set so far.(The yellow triangle's top/flat end could be extended a bit more, though. His head looks like it ended abruptly, as opposed to the purple smiley...) I mean come on....F***ING TRIANGLES, PEOPLE! If that's not brilliant, then I don't know what is. If it ever came down to a vote, yours would currently win in my book, Xion....

Thanks, BOB (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/Xionight/Smilebumpybrow.gif)
I say they suck because they're detailed and hard to read at 1x. Triangles are hard to detail, what, having less area than both squares and circles and all. I'll give the 3-sided sucka's one mo' chance...

Edit Edit: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/Xionight/Smiles.gif)
Top row = Bold outlines.
Bottom row = No outlines (for fitting together ala Rydin's, of course.)
Leftmost = Low Color
-
I like the cubed smilies the best so far. Though if some people can come up with nicely detailed square smilies, I believe those would fit the site much better.
-
(http://www.monsoon2d.com/images/pixelart/subpixel-smily.gif)
Feh. Terrible design, but I REALLY wanted to animate something. I have all night to play with it, I guess.
[EDIT] He needs eyes--- and lots of other stuff.
My favs so far have to be Lawrence's set and the upper left smiley from Xion's latest set. Reminds me of NGPC art.

Used as a Message icon to summon the german twice as fast as the sound effect :P

Thank you. :)

Definitely.

If you make a full set of those I promise that I will put them in as a selectable set.
i think i may just have to hold you to that, assuming its alright with junkboy. they look really fun to do, and i might have to take them on as a personal project.
edit:

they look Great :y:
-
I think it makes total sense for a pixel-art forum to have square emoticons.
-
i did up to *mean* so far, ill post em later. also, is it just me but is *rolleyes* up there twice?
edit:
-removedbyeck-
i suck at pixeling :( :'( :'(
-
Eck: You do realize that the first part of this competition is only to come up with the template for the smilies. So other people can do the smilies themselves later. (hence this only being part 1).
For the first part of this activity, we simply need a smiley template for being able nail all the other smilies afterwards (which are about 41 if memory serves me well). So, long story short, you will have 2 weeks to come up with smiley designs you would like to see used on Pixelation. Then, we will pick our favorite and carry on with the second part.
So far my vote goes to Lawrence for those charmingly constructed smilies.

Maybe block smileys with an excessive amount of colors?
-
just a comment, but i've never liked how :D's eyes look. it's like, crazed, mang.
and monsoon, that looks really cool. very sharp.

I got my idea from Xions bottom left, the low color.. i started these at school with that in mind, and my friends just kept telling me to do more and more of them, so :D

some i made for lobd...
-
(http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/1586/smilieyqh5.png)
Since everyone was going with a square design, I tried it.
Not much detail, but a very :] smile.
-
Anyone making a smiley, keep in mind, they need to be really readable at 1x zoom. A lot posted here simply are not, broken linework and subtle lightness jumps that don't register at 1x.
-
First time I have done something that small. I'm not quite happy with the hue, but I tihnk it works (and make the look like frogs!) :P

Seeing all these pixel-shaped smiley, I think one thing to consider would be having different colors, depending on the smiley's mood. That would make them even more pixely in a way, though it might create visually messy posts. Or maybe using that orange-ish color from the forum's IM icons instead of the egg yolk yellow.
-
(http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/3496/smiley2xyr0.gif)
double sized pixels!
(credit to monsoon2D for using his colors, had no time to made some myself)

Oh i like these, they're very clear. Although i also really like the 3d'ish perspective on some of the other square smileys.

I think a nice simple gray/white set with the occasional light shade of another color will do the forum some good.

my god what did photobucket do to my pixels?! i'm trying to fix it so it doesn't look like a jpeg...
That may be because you uploaded it from a bmp? Photobucket turns bmp images into jpg's. I suggest you make it a PNG for hosting :)
-
thank you larwick. all is fixed :)

I do think this is a good idea, then we could have a challenge where you'd have to pixel in smileys in a post. This would really make people feel like MSpaint is super-advanced right after.
-
I concur. I want to pixel something using the forum's emoticons.... it'd have to be a somewhat decent palette to work with though.

That is so awsome Ptoing!
-
roygbp = 6*3 + b + gr + w = 21 smileys. That's 3 shades of Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple each, plus black, grey, and white. Should be enough for some smileyart, methinks. And most certainly not unfathomable. Maybe even add some brown in there. Have some smileys reppin' the C-sikky-fo', too.

That's a neat idea.
I love Panda's smilies, but they seem very large.
Actually they are smaller than the current ones (19x19 pixels against the current 20x20)
But being squared makes them look bigger.
Oh and pretty cool Ptoing.

I agree with helm about Faktablad's smileys. You do a great job at using the entire face to portray the emotion.

I'm more interested in the colors he's using to portray the emotion, rather than the faces themselves. Great job Fak, you gotz my vote until further notice, Beetch...
-
(http://www.monsoon2d.com/images/pixelart/square-smiley.gif)
this is my favourite so far, or junkboy's original.
I strongly agree, either of these two. They're very clean, and have enough space to portray more subtle emotions, as well as contain bigger animations.
(The animation on monsoon's here is virtually undetectable at 1x zoom though.)
-
I say we just go with the style of the smiley in the banner...
Gigantor!!!
...At least one...?
-
Everyone, remember that this activity will end on Monday, so if you wanted to participate, hurry up.
I will explain how the voting will go once this part is over.

Giant smileys is a brilliant idea! :y:
(maybe not)

Tried to do square multi-colored pixemoticons that we can pixel with.

The colors can be changed to a better palette.
[edit]
16x16 version and another without the outline
(better to pixel with)
-
this thing ends on my birthday, lol, plus I might have a go
-
I think perciv@l's are my favorite so far.
And Junkboy's giant one. :P
No but really, we should have a giant smiley. Just one.
-
I like the block idea. Tried something with a simple look and a bit of AA. No transparency, but that shouldn't be much of a problem here. There are only the single corner pixels that could be, and a darker grey than the forum posts backgrounds works just as well, I think.
Oh, and they're 16x16 with about 6 colors each.

Thanks for the kind words B.O.B., InvaderLupus, Helm. I used MS Paint colors again...sssshhhhh.... :-X
And, I don't know, I kind of like Dusty's mixed resolution thing. His smiley is very cute.
I like Perciv@l's, but I think the larger versions work better, with outlines. Something seems very evil about all of them, though, like they have dead eyes.
-
B&W Smiley.

-
personally, I'm not so sold on the square smilies, I guess it comes down to they don't personify as well as classic circle smilies.
I know its a minor difference, but the square shape registers before the expression for me.
And I don't really have any smilies made I'd prefer over the ones we currently have, well I do have a set I use in some forums with really bad smilies, I mainly just use these ones though:
