Title: Tribal Man
Post by: Mush on September 05, 2009, 06:07:02 pm
I made this for fun yesterday only to wake up and see how messed up some parts are (particularly the forehead). C+C would be nice.

Based on this quick sketch of mine:

Update: decided to make a body for the head.

Used Andrew Loomis' anatomy book for reference.

Hey Mush  :) ,

Nice, but why such big Eyes?  ???

Or is that "normal" with Tribals? O_o

Oh, and: You have two dark shades in your Palette, that are almost the same - you can combine them to one, if you like :) .

Greetings,
Ingo

This seems to be an almost exact trace of Loomis' ideal male proportion chart in "Figure drawing for all it's worth". A reference is fine, but this seems to be more of a carbon copy.

I'd go for a smaller height, maybe 7 or even 6 heads. The head anatomy is so cartoony that the proportion doesn't seem to fit.

I do admit it was a direct copy of Loomis' figure, but it wasn't a trace (don't know if that makes any difference). I just wanted to get the anatomy correct before I change it up a bit.

Here's what I have now.

I know you referenced from an anatomy book, but I just feel the knees should be a tad higher...

Nope, the knees are exactly right. That's the advantage he got from copying it, the proportions should be as good as it gets :)

Actually I'd say the knees are low. Loomis isn't a great reference point.

The knees here are definitely lower than Loomis' knees anyway. (http://drawninblack.globalmindflow.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/loomis.jpg) In my opinion, the head is way too small as well. He's approximately 8 1/4 heads tall, which is a bit much, I'd say.

Thanks for the replies.

Actually, his body is 6.9319 heads tall (610px/88px).
I might just scrap the whole body as it doesn't really add to the piece. It was good anatomy practice though.

He looks like he'd be skinnier.
Maybe make him crouching or sitting.
This looks like it could be a really trippy picture depending on how you do it.

I'd say a better anatomical practice would be on something more original and something that actually has a realistic face. As it stands, your tribal man's face is really cartoony and doesn't look a thing like an anatomically correct head would. It looks good, though. It just didn't match the body you were trying to force upon it.

I'd say a straight on, cartoony pose with him holding a staff would be interesting. Maybe make him crouch a tad, too. ;)

Keep it up.
