Title: Little Sprite Man
Post by: poisonarms on March 22, 2011, 04:07:41 pm
First time making a sprite of a person, I wanted to get some feedback on it. I'm rather happy the way it turned out, actually.

*squints*
Legs seem a little narrow
Is that a black outline?  :/

What's wrong with a black outline?

The smaller a sprite is, the more important each pixel is.
On such a small thing, black outlines take up a lot of space that could be better utilised.
(Unfortunately, I'm just reiterating what I've read on here several times, but don't know how to actually do it. Have a look around is all I can suggest right now.)

Ok, took the advice of black outlines and the narrow legs and came up with this...

It's kinda conflicting now, the head looks like it's from an overhead view but the body is as if you're looking at him from a purely 2d view.

Aelyrin basically explained what I was thinking,
also instead of getting rid of the outline you can put a darker version of the color that is surrounding.
(If you at worrying about lighting, the lighter color outline is closer to the light source.)

I'm pretty new at pixel art. And by pretty new I mean, this is only like the second time I've ever attempted it.

I adjusted his eyes in hoping it wouldn't like that here (I also added a palette):

I'm drawing this sprite for a platformer game. Can anyone give me any tips for drawing a side view?

Came up with this for the side view:

Okay, let's see... Where to start.

Palette could definitely use improvement. Some of the colors are way too saturated.

His hair's pretty shiny. Is that some sort of new product he's got on it?

The darkest skin color is almost identical to that of the belt buckle, so unless you want to change the buckle's color, it's not needed. On that note, the darkest skin shade resides on the side that the hair's being lit. It's as if the light is coming from two different directions.

Tried to address problems with lighting. Also used a lot less palette colors. I think it turned out alright.

Man that does look better. Thanks for tweaking it. I think my main problem is adding detail. I don't quite get why people place certain pixels where they place them.

Well, maybe you should figure that out first.  :)
