Pixelation

Recently, I've been doing alot more pixel art than coding for my own game. I don't know what program to use since I don't have the cash to go around buying a £100 package and stuff just to do some pixel art. I normally use the program my game runs on which is BYOND, or I would use MS Paint which isn't really the best thing to work on sometimes. Is there any free software you can suggest for me to use?
Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

Check the Tools, Resources and Linkage Thread (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=3467.0)
Graphics Gale is a good free alternative, you can not save animated gifs with the free version tho.

Speaking of the GIMP, the main problem I had with the GIMP is how it handles keyboard input.
Say you drag a layer down one spot, you've now lost keyboard focus on the canvas, so before you can nudge the whole layer down one pixel, you have to click the canvas again.
There were alot of situations where you had to click back to the canvas just to give it keyboard focus again so you could go back to work on your picture.

Thanks guys, GIMP is alright!

Frychiko, on Linu this problem can be mitgated with a good windows manager. n windows, it may be a portability problem...

Beoran, I don't use Linux or the GIMP anymore but could you explain that solution?

Actually, I just tried what you want to did in Linux, and it works without problems. So, it's certainly a Windows bug. You may want to make a bug report to the GIMP maintainers (if the bug hasn't already been solved in the latest version).
As another free alternative on Linux, there's mtpaint, which is also nice for easy pixeling.

Tile Studio?

I was using Ubuntu at the time and it happened in all versions of the GIMP, at least up until 2.4.6 I quit using it after that. Just dived back into Ubuntu to test it again and the same thing happens. Either they fixed it in a later verison or you're doing something different.
What version of the GIMP are you using?
Anyway I'm back with Windows and Photoshop. I have Promotion too but I don't pixel these days.

Well, perhaps I misunderstood what you're tryng to do, but I first click the drag tool, and then and then I can immediately move the layer by keyboard or by mouse alternatively without losing any focus. Even in old GIMP 2.2.14. Perhaps your problem is different?

Ah I meant, click on the layer window and drag a layer down or up, and THEN try to nudge the canvas up or down one pixel, or select another tool by keyboard. (without clicking elsewhere while the layer window has focus).

Ah, I see. Well, it kind of makes sense, though, that you lose focus, as you're clicking inside another window. It may be better to assign custom keyboard shortcuts for moving the layers and hiding and showing them.
