Title: MORPG Character Template [WIP]
Post by: Ixis on February 16, 2008, 06:13:11 am
Ok, I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how to do this thing:

I'm trying to make a character template for a MORPG I'm working on (no code done, want to get some basic graphics done and make a mock-up.) I want the game to be reminiscent of Mother 3 (http://mother3.fobby.net/previews/) in style, but the sprites have to be big enough so players can see more details in the clothing they equip. I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and making the sprites smaller and offensively retro, but not until I feel that I should give up on the style I'm trying to do here.

Things I'm already noticing: Thickness of the face and contrast of the body.

hey Ixis
have in mind that if your gonna make a sprite that big it will be double work to make it walk and any animations you want to make.
Anyways, The head looks like he is really fat. Push up his cheeks, make his year bigger; the top part of the year is aligned with the center of the eyes and its bottom with  the mouth.
The hair seems a bit polygonal, but it's ok
The underwear doesn't fit at all with his position, check that out again. If you watch the drawing carefully you'll see the volume of his belly and his legs as well. They make a curved line that must dominate his pelvis, but not his genitals. By this I'm telling you that the top line of his underwear must be curved.
Make his neck a bit thinner as well as his arms and legs.
Don't make his legs bent, make them strait as the drawing and check his hands and foot.
I assume that you'll add colors to this piece.

Apart that its cool and it has future :)
cheers!

I would really suggest pumping up the contrast on this piece. You might also benefit from increasing the saturation of the skin tones a bit more. As of right now, this isn't bad, but with some tweaking, it could be a lot better.

I decided to go smaller on the sprites, then started the female sprite, then got distracted and turned her into Ty Lee from Avatar just to dick around. C&C?

EDIT: Lol, already made changes to her baggy... body... and stuff...

and some before and after shots (make me laugh )

Stuff to do next:
Fix eye color (fix eye shape too?)
Work on bust
Work on left arm?

Much improved on the body, but the colors lack contrast and skin could use more saturation.

Ok, I'd say it's just about done...

Still not enough contrast
Mine ->(http://lorne.lastchancemedia.com/Images/two/Tricksandcrits/1.gif)(http://studentpages.scad.edu/~kcampb22/tiny-ty-lee.gif) <- Yours
God how I hate skin tones.
I think I made the shadows too red in mine.
Try to make the skin dark enough so that the white clothing sticks out atleast a little.
Also, shadow on yourses neck area makes it look like the upper part of her neck is part of her face.

Thanks for the help Sherman, (sorry for the late response.) The colors I picked straight from the screencaps, so the whack color choices is Nick's fault. Just for making it work better I changed the swimsuit color scheme. Any other suggestions from folks?

The face doesn't seem to have any shading.  :'(
You could be dong alot more with the colors you have.

You do have darker tones in your palette, why don't you use it to add some contrast in it?

I'm still new at pixel shading, and I was going for the shading style in the cartoon, but yours is leagues better. :y:

Yep, it definitely needs more contrast.
