I'm creating a character again, and this time I'm going for a male.
This is what I've got so far:
It's not much, but it's a start. Should I change the hair? I want a cool look, like "Prince Of Persia"...
And at his arm it looks like a boob, but it's something from the "coat" or something he's wearing :P
Oh and it may look like a strange pose, but he'll wear 2 swords:
-one behind his neck
-one under his arm, he's leaning on it
Any crits? Or should I just go on?
-
I really like the hair...okay lets get down to critique...
Anatomy is totally awkward, his legs are too short, his body too long, arms are too long wrongly connected to joints...but if its meant as cartoonish than it looks kinda good, but that anatomy is bad even for cartoon...here is a short sketch of how it should look like...well...should...
It will turn up really good just keep working on it ;)

Yes some other guys told me about the anatomy, I always do wrong in lenght...
I'll fix it and then post it again..
One question: Does the character looks a little "gay" ?
-
It look rather androgynous like most Japanese characters. Until the face detail is in I won't really be able to know. But it's not flaming gay or anything.
-
Well...that arm makes him look a little gay...try to make him more leaned and angry looking so he will look more cool, or more actiony pose. But this is just mine suggestion, otherwise I kinda like that pose...only for that arm, if it would be posed in a wrist maybe it would look more normal.
-
Ok, some guy told me the blue thing looked gay on him, but I changed it anyways.
-
Is there a reason this is so huge?
-
It's for practice.. Also, I'll maybe make a game hero out of it, and this could be used as art or something in the game
-
What are you practicing?
-
Just some details, anatomy, shading reasonably(no pillow-shading), and some other stuff what will turn a basic pixelartist into a better one.
UPDATE:
Changed the anatomy, made the hand look like a fist, other hand is more diagonal, he has a belt, changed the blue thingy.. Also added two swords. How can I make it look he's more leaning on the one?
Is this fine so I can go shading or should I change something else..?
-
Regardless if it's for practice this is too big. :/
Size it down, it'll look better.
-
It's not only for practice, also for fun.. I've practiced before on smaller models..
And I'm not in the mood to size this down...

I think he's leaning more now..
-
I know. But if I'm making a game character out of him, I want him to have 2 swords.
I can't pick eyes...
Which one is the best out of these 4? (They're not very detailed )
Fourth one the body isnt visible, but it's about the eyes.
Also u can see a little bit of the shading.
-
first definitely :}
i do suggest you start some anatomy practise, i started roughly a week ago and it can help your art dramatically :}
I started using this to practise anatomy, hope it helps.

Ok I'll try that tutorial ;)
And I agree using the first eye :)
-
I tried, this is what I've made in my first try using that tutorial
Took about 10 minutes..

I did an edit, i know that the neck length, and various other parts aren't in the right proportions.. but i wasn't sure whether you was aiming for that so i kept it the same. One main problem on my edit.
I do think it's easier if you do it on a piece of paper and scan it in..
eg. What i did last night http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/tikeshe/musl1.png (http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181/tikeshe/musl1.png) *excuse the arm, there's some problems there i need to work on :P*
Nonetheless, i think this way is the best.
My edit, just take what you want.. hope it did help..

Dude, clean your lines. The shapes look very random too, especially the head.
Take a look at Quake's edit, he solved some of those problems.
@Quake:
It looks too feminine, the collar bone is messed up, the chest muscles are too high, and the hips are weird.
-
My thingy I showed of that wasn't cleaned because I'm not working on that one. It was a quickly done anatomy piece :P
I'm focusing on my big piece.
-
It's not only for practice, also for fun.. I've practiced before on smaller models..
And I'm not in the mood to size this down...
Not in the mood?! Mood's a thing for cattle and love play... not fighting!
-
Hehe yes I don't know how to say it in English... I'm Dutch :P
But I'll go on working at my big piece now
-
Made an edit:
Made it smaller so I could edit a reasonable amount of things in those 5 minutes.
He got a haircut, personal preference. I think the anime inspired hair gets silly.
Gave his face some volume along with a nose and mouth. Not aiming for super-realism but I think you should see a different style that wasn't photo realistic
Changed his pose a little, got rid of the two swords to give him a giant one. No idea why I did that. You should probably have one of the swords sheathed unless he's ready for a fight.
Manliness is often determined by the number of swords you carry.
Size matters too!
-
Good, personally I dislike the haircut. Also what you did to the hand where his other sword was, it looks flaming gay :P
The expression on his face is funny :P
I personally don't like those GIANT SWORDS... XD
But I'll see what I can do to the face.
-
Please don't take that crit as an insult. There were and still are problems with your sprite. It's a pretty unmanageable size and that's hindering your progress. Several people have pointed this out before and I think you should really
consider do it.
Another thing that might help with this whole process is knowing a little bit about this character. What kind of time/world is he from? why does he have two identical swords? Is he human? What's his role in the hypothetical story?
Questions like these give a little life to your character.
As for my edit looking flaming gay ... I don't see it. In my mind he was a fencer. A fencer in a world where people can wield giant weapons with ease. He's a bit pompous and simply "I'm better than you".
If this piece doesn't need to be big then don't make it big.
-
It's not only for practice, also for fun.. I've practiced before on smaller models..
And I'm not in the mood to size this down...

I think he's leaning more now..
I'll go back to that point then and scale it. I don't really see the problem but you guys are better than me, so I think I should listen XD
