got bored, started this
(http://i51.tinypic.com/qs704p.png)
dunno if the walk cycle works at all
the guything is supposed to be kinda soft looking, and i havent shaded the shadow claw arm thing yet
what i mostly need help with right now is my absolute dirt poor dirt tile
tho C+C on the guything is encouraged
also he needs a name...
-
the love: i feel it

Don't worry, Candy Man. I love you! =P
I drew a quick slime monster for you...when you draw slime things, I find it usually looks better if you apply the shading in reverse...have the darkest part on the top, and the lightest part on the bottom. That makes it look like there's some fancy refraction going on inside your slime, lol. Then just add the speculars on top of the slime to finish the effect:

It's not amazing, but hopefully it'll give you some ideas at least. o/
Edit: You could look at Jad's avatar, too. Looks like I might have been subconsciously thinking of it when I drew that, hahah.
-
i shall attempt this and post it when its done
thanks for the love ;D

i rather like it, tho it really needs some touching up
-
your lack of posts disturb me
so i've been trying really hard to get the rocks tile thing shaded, but... its not going so well
i'll put up an example of how bad it is tomorrow
hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, before or after its up
-
i have no idea how to shade a rock ._.

You obviously need to take a break and learn from existing game art. Get an SNES emulator and grab some old RPG's. Or just google screenshots. And spend a few hours searching PixelJoint, compiling some favorites. Open them in your image editor and zoom way in. Get to know them. Extract methods and techniques of shading, etc. Do it.

better or worse?
i feel like i over dithered....
maybe i just need to use more colors <_<
blah
-
The grass is pretty good! : )
as for the dirt, I suggest leaving it with those two colors (deleting the lightest one) and adding some darker shade in the intersections between stones

i like where this is going, thanks =D
-
Wow! They are lovable! :D
@CMC:
Are you left handed, or native in a language that's written right-to-left, by chance?
-
neither, why?
-
tried out the walking animation
(http://i55.tinypic.com/11lqty9.gif)
C+C on him?
i rather like it for my first real walk cycle
-
I think psiweapon asked 'cause you draw all your sprites facing left : )
not bad, you should have him move is head and the whole body as well though, here is a great tutorial

-
i was just focusing on the legs + arms for now
thanks tho, that'll come in handy
edit*
(http://i52.tinypic.com/2s7et7d.gif)
better?
-
Much better ; )
btw, i think that the way the face is turned doesn't fit the way the body's turned
-
aw crap, youre right
i'll work on turning the body to fit the head
-
WOO PIXELATION IS UP AGAIN
Before moving on to the walking animation, if you ask me, the sprite itself should be a higher priority. I think it's clear it's a result of boredom. Think about it. What is it? Some kind of cute zombie ragdoll with a mutant arm? Aside from the patch on its right eye, there's basically nothing else to suggest this. (And I don't think the bandage on its head is needed. Not only is is it distracting, a stitch would serve better for that purpose.)
When paired with the other sprites, their subject matter seems both pretty random and generic; colorful, bouncing blobs of slime and some cute screws with faces. Not sure how many times I've seen the "slime" enemy, but it's probably been a lot of times since I can trace my early sightings back to MapleStory.
It doesn't fit in with the other tiles very well. It uses more black outlines than the grass/rock tiles, and it's completely in gray-scale, which contrasts with the saturation of the rest of the sprites.
It lacks some character, and it lacks balance as well. (Both are made more obvious in the walk cycle.) The legs might be too far back, and the normal arm as well. The mutated arm seems unnaturally weightless--you could remove it from the sprite and you wouldn't notice. Swinging it back and forth or even dragging it seems more reasonable, if you can pull it off. (Thinking of it, the head seems similar. Maybe you could time its bobbing differently, relative to the body?)
Quick redo:

Added some more color, more value to the shading, more stitches. Tried to add some variety to its stance to add to its character, but its left arm looks a bit out of place.
(Also, this (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/upload/12framerun.gif) tutorial by Ptoing (walk cycles) should be of some help.)
@RedKnight91: Yeah, almost forgot to mention! 9 was definitely one of my inspirations. The designs (and perhaps the premise behind them) are actually a bit similar to the subject of CMC's sprite--but not so large-headed--so he could use that for reference and improvement in design.

i am in love with that
also the grey was just place holder till i found color i liked for it
he's basically some kind of golem with a shadow claw arm
i'll toy around with him some
-
Can we make this into a game :)
He looks too cool to waste.
Here I've started for you: http://www.shockware.co.uk/sandbox/

some friends and i are already doing just that =]

THIS EDIT IS DAMN COOL!!!
Reminds me of Nine here (http://images.google.it/search?hl=en&safe=off&biw=1600&bih=1109&gbv=2&tbm=isch&q=nine+movie&revid=305483964&sa=X&ei=xE1wTraAOdP44QTR_eyaCQ&ved=0CDsQ1QIoAQ#hl=en&safe=off&gbv=2&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=9+movie&oq=9+movie&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=4418l5722l0l6049l5l5l0l0l0l3l371l1225l2-2.2l4l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=d4af792114689dac&biw=1600&bih=1109") ; D
The most awesome thing is is head, I love its shape and the eyes!
-
(http://i52.tinypic.com/25grww9.png)
couldnt really get the head right
still messing with the eyes
also having a hard time with the arm...
dunno, feel like i messed up a lot <_>
-
One thing I note about the edit that looks neat that you didn't accomplish so well is the contrast between shades. Experiment with that a little, high contrast can really make something pop.
-
(http://i51.tinypic.com/5ywxac.png)
better?
worse?
imploded?
also im thinking of naming it Ręze
-
In my opinion, the actual legs are a bit twisted.
Maybe it comes to this cause of the right foot is facing the wrong way.
This earlier update was better (he looked like he was more in motion)
But the shading is way better, kinda like his seams and his eyes :D
-
(http://i51.tinypic.com/n4ve6d.png)
changed the leg back, started messing with the shadow arm
also back to the tiles for a sec
(http://i56.tinypic.com/2qn8ius.png)
good?
bad?
also if someone could give me a nice hard shove in the right direction for a walk cycle that'd be great
cuz i cant seem to get it to look right with the angle
-
(http://i54.tinypic.com/fyimw0.png)
new tiles, and working on new grass
-
I prefer the old tiles to the new ones, the new ones look far too hard on the eyes and seems out of place with the rest of the sprites.
-
well the rest of the sprites have to be redone to fit the character anyway
(http://i54.tinypic.com/24dewc8.png)
any less hard on the eyes?
also messed with the grass, cant decide which
and started messing with the slime to better fit the character, its not going as well as i'd like
-
It definitly looks cooler.
Btw. how did you do the new rock texture? Looks rather complex.
-
I think the new dirt looks way to realistic, and doesn't really it the theme established by the new character
-
Don't get stuck with one little dirt tile go on and get back to it later on if you aren't happy with it.

thanks, and it was mostly just me making spots randomly then making it a bit grittier and just refining it a lot

still toying with it to fit him more

yeah, imma leave it for now for the walk cycle and actually try to get the slime fitting the new style, too
-
(http://i54.tinypic.com/126ftzd.png)
started messing with some leg bits for walking
also messed with the slime, still trying to get it right to fit the character
after i get more legs i'll stick together an animation of just the legs
then i'll get the body fitting it, then the arms
